- A new intriguing Startouch elf that goes by the name of Aaravos has made his official debut in the Dragon Prince Season 2. But his impact on the story has been around since the beginning. It is not the first time he has interacted with humans and given them gifts, and certainly won't be the last.

I don't see why Aaravos can't be both, maybe he views humans as petulant children that need his supervision, unlike the other elves who view them as a nuisance. It still isn't great and it still provides conflict, but it certainly seems more interesting than, Evil for Evil and Power for Power's sake

Am with you there. Runaan just looked at that mirror itself, not "beyond" it, where Aaravos would be. So im sure hes actually afraid of being locked up like this. Which would make him being locked the same way in a golden coin even more evil...
I think the fate more terrible than death is a reference to a sentence that was thought to be worse than death in the antiquity

Personally wouldnt mind if Callum became an Archmage. I feel like what Aaravos saw in humans is the fact they have the _capability_ to use all forms of magic. It's just tremendously more difficult for them and so most/none have ever unlocked all of the arcana, let alone one like Callum. I like the idea that humans in this world are actually exploding with potential but most aren't able to make use of it.
To elaborate on this, I think he gave them the knowledge of dark magic because he knew it was the key to connected to the primal sources, like how Callum was only able to connect to the sky arcana after using dark magic.
@@RonaldDotCa I could see that. At the same time though I feel like they're trying to make it clear that Dark Magic isn't okay in any sense in this world. Personally I see it more as Callum experiencing something similar to Zuko's metamorphosis in Avatar. Where he got sick by not only being inexperienced with Dark Magic but also due to a metaphorical and very literal internal struggle. Surpassing that of course opened his mind to the arcana he'd been trying to understand at the time, the Sky arcana.
But that's just my theory at least.

Maybe Callum’s dad didn’t “die” and instead was trapped in a mirror for having love with a human, and than that mirror was put in the dragon king’s lair, if you see where I am going with this! Aaravos passed his abilities to his son and Callum’s Mum just never spoke about it (and tried to forget her past and move on) and that’s why she has a soft spot for magical creatures! Maybe it was Rayla’s grandparents that gave human’s dark magic, which would make way for a interesting story

He may not be straight up evil but i think we should not loose sight of the fact that dark magic is fuelled by killing magical creatures, including sentient ones. Regardless of his actual alignment, he may be alien enough as to make the words meaningless
I think this show has most of it's characters (that are not pure white) in "shades of gray" state, and I don't see it outraight making anyone just plain black. We also might get some of "blue and orange morality" to the face. That would be interesting.
I had my suspicions of him having a hand in creating dark magic and this basically confirms it. But i never considered him as a Prometheus kind of character, but i have to admit that would make sense and it would be a good twist for the story. I presume that humans were badly treated while under the elves, maybe even enslaved, which is why Aaravos ended up helping them. Maybe his goal was to force the elves and humans to treat each other as equals, but his plan failed when the other elves found out and imprisoned him. I think it'd make for a better story if he was a misunderstood good guy, instead of some sadistic big bad.
i agree being a misunderstood villain would be a better story. i think he was imprisoned not simply because he was the one to possibly teach dark magic but i think he being able to use more than one or in his case all types of magic scared the elves cause they feared if not only humans but other elves learned how to do it it unbalance the level of power and cause catastrophy.

Vissia I’d say Aaravos is very much like the tale of Lucifer- the most beautiful angel that fell from Heaven’s grace. Once the most beloved elf of the dragon king (speculation), he is now their greatest and darkest shame. He is cunning and I believe he despises humans, viewing them as mindless tools, tricking them into embracing a magic so evil it would spur an all out genocide against humanity. Instead humanity is cast out of Eden- cough- Xadia.
So, yeah. Aaravos is very likely a double edged blade for both elves and humans.
Runaan never said that Aaravos was worse than death, He said "You've found something worse than death" he never specified Aaravos. He could be referring to the mirror or how the mirror is like a capsule that imprisons someone... which makes it quite funny when Viren imprisons him in the coin, and this would also explain why Runaan looks so scared in the coin - its a similar fate.

@@gadio16 he had no idea about the coins at that point, he said it in response to the mirror being unavailed. Most people think it's because he knows Aaravos is inside it but it could be that the mirror has a darker meaning. No one really knows what happened to Aaravos, at least that's what the characters are shown to think.
I mean the Mirror has imprisoned Aaravos in a building that seems to have no place or time. (He can walk through a door but we don't know where it goes, and there is no Day night cycle, it's always day) He's literally existing forever in isolation with absolutely no changes in stimulus. At least the coins can seemingly hear and exist in the normal day and night cycle. Aaravos is in the perfect bubble of seclusion, separated from time and space.

To me, Araavos gave the "gift" of dark magic to a human child he got attached to and she used it against the other elves. They found out what Araavos did and locked him away and cursed his name like shown in the show.
Despite what she says here in the review I have always seen Elarion as a city - that magic or a gift was given to that as a whole not an individual -
the way the description is its a metaphor - and some personification of the situation /city's state - of being poor or in trouble and abandoned by those who could help

Claudia will eventually be corrupted by her dark magic and the final fight will actually between Callum and Claudia/Aaravos. That's my hunch. We'll lose viren before long.
Yeah. I feel like next season they will bring Zym home and parallel the return as king for Zym with the story of Ezran. Viren will be Sol Regem in this parallel I feel like; the person who served the old king and does not deem the young prince old enough to reign. The story will unfold further from there, I think.

I think it's really interesting Thunder kept the mirror at all. If he was truly concerned about Aaravos escaping, why not smash the mirror? Or use magic to hide it such as Lujanne hid Ava's leg? Thunder must have kept him around for a reason,
If Thunder managed to trap him why not outright kill him? Your right about smashing the mirror. If Aaravos is really that dangerous why keep him around at all.
Maybe he's so powerful even Thunder viewed him as a last ditch resource?

Maybe smashing the mirror wouldn’t do anything. It could reform itself or maybe the portal would be moved to a different mirror reincarnation-style. Also, I think the logic behind keeping it with Thunder rather than under an illusion is: Who’s going to be crazy enough to attack the Dragon King in his own lair? It most likely took a HUGE army and a ton of Dark Magic to actually kill him. Also, maybe the elves were worried that they themselves might be tempted by Aaravos’ power, like Viron is now, and they believed the Dragon King would be the only one honorable or powerful enough to resist the temptation. That way the mirror would be kept not just from the humans, but the elves as well.
People keep pinning Aaravos as the big bad of the series. I don’t know. With the connection to Prometheus, who was never portrayed as straight evil (always at least a sympathetic character), I’m not so sure he is the big bad. It’s a possibility, but we’ll definitely have to wait and see on that. Something I’m unsure of is whether inherently magical creatures can come to understand other arcanums. Obviously, Aaravos can, so I don’t see why dragons and moon shadow elves, like Rayla, could not. So when Aaravos says he sees potential in humanity, it does not seem to me that humans are solely capable of wielding multiple aracanums or dark magic.

As of now, I think Aaravos is operating via Genie rules. He'll help you get anything you wish, just be careful what you wish for. Humans of old wished to be as equals with the magic wielding Elves. If Aaravos really give them dark magic to answer such a wish, we can clearly see how that backfires. Also the Key of Aaravos may very well be the key that frees him from the mirror 0.0

MY FIRST THOUGHT--
I think aaravos was interested in humanity and knowledge and saved the human girl who was called a child in the text but was probably close in age to our older main cast.
They became lovers after a while and he gave magic to humans. The other elves hated this banished him into the mirror and banished humanity
I think the boy's mother was the descendant of aaravos and that is why the boys have magic and why the cube is with callum. A destiny birth right
Humanity probably warped history or the elves did to paint aaravos as a villain and that is why he hides texts with his name, he does not lie but written history does.
Perhaps years of solitude and hatred have warped him into desiring vengeance and those who wronged him

That... would explain a lot. If the elves sent humans into the west, then a pregnant human would have been sent the same way, with the elves thinking the baby was pure human, and eventually the descendants became queen Serai then Callum and Ezran, and callums key is what unlocks his prison.

And in the letter that King Harrow wrote to Callum he mentioned *aravoses key* (the glowy cube thingie) i think aravos is trapped in that world between life and death, and *aravoses key* is used to open that portal to that world.
It may happen in season 4 (that aravos wil escape) or 5 for now we just have to wait
I think that Aaravos is trapped in that plane beyond life and death like we saw in that episode where the moon illusionist explained how they opened portals to other planes. They probably did this as the elf's only way to get rid of him. Also when Viren asks him "Where are you?" he responds with "I don't know" to which Viren said "Don't lie to me" and defensively Aaravos states that "I never lie." They completely brushed off the topic of where he was located. Although he does seem to be doing a fair amount of research in his library. We also see that he walks in and out of his room. On top of all that when Runaan says he found something worse than death, you see his eyes darting around the mirror as if he's looking BEYOND the mirror. It is kind of a stretch tho.
So did the ancient moon mages at the Nexus lock him in the plane between life and death when they destroyed the Nexus? Is that how the Nexus was destroyed?
I also saw some theories that there will be six element wielders, with Callum being sky, Reyla being moon, and Ezran being Earth. Already halfway to six there.

Me too. It would be cooler to have a team of element wielders instead of just one "Avatar", that way the main character wouldn't be too much in the spotlight and we can get more development of others.
What if the gift that Aaravos gave the humans is the ability to tap into different arcanums, just the knowledge of it got lost once Aaravos got trapped in the mirror? It seems a bit fishy that Callum is able to connect with the sky arcanum just by being in tune with the sky or something, so my theory is that, since the time of Elarion, all humans have arcanums, they just don't know it. This would explain Ezran having the ability to talk to animals. Ezran was born with an earth arcanum, and Callum was born with sky. It's possible that Aaravos didn't give Elarion dark magic, but was trying to save her from using it by giving her real magic. We've seen that dark magic has ill effects on the user's body and mind, so if they were close to each other I don't think that Aaravos would set her down a path of destruction by giving her dark magic, but would try to grant her the gift of her own arcanum instead.
That’s actually a really smart theory.
In regards to no passages containing his name being readable I think there's something extra to that. Iirc Aaravos gave a warning to Viren before giving his name and only then did Viren look him up and find the books unreadable. But Callum read Harrow's letter which contained the name Aaravos, so: Hearing his name uttered activates whatever spell caused the books to change.

Regardless of evil, good or hot guy. I just hope they give him a good made story somehow. And not just he is evil or good and done with that.
My greatest wish about this character thought would be chaotic grey moral character. That wants some equality between creatures, but somehow managed make it a complicated mess someone else did not like.
There is even an interview there the creators just say "He is complicated, disliked, and that bad and disliked is different things.

What I want to know is why aavaros went against the elves, the dragons and Thunder? What would make him want to change? Did he see that humans were at a disadvantage because they couldn't use magic? But Callum could as a human so that defeats the purpose of dark magic. I'm sure aavaros knows humans can learn the arkaneum (I don't know how to spell that). It's just so odd. Whatever aavaros did must have been terrible for him to be locked in the mirror.
Viren at this point is just a pawn to aavaro at this point.
I am sure one of Aaravos' crimes is practicing dark magic but probably other things as well
Well, on the subject of Magic, I think the Elves especially despised Dark Magic because it was almost a perversion, a cheap copy, of the Original Six. Think about it; Dark Mages form their spellcraft by converting the Arcana of flora, fauna, and other materials to fuel them. An example would be the Titan's heart being used to create an abnormally long summer. And my guess is that the larger and stronger the creature, the mightier the spell. Where would such power go? Therefore, the Elves sought to banish the atrocity from Xadia, ergo, the cursing of Aaravos and Humanity's exile.
"But Callum could as a human so that defeats the purpose of dark magic" - yeah, the first human that could connect to the primal source without external help. first in thousands of years (dark magic was said to be discovered thousand years ago). so it does defeat the purpose of dark magic, but only now. how can aaravos know that humans can connect to the acranum if we only see one human do it? and he haven't even seen callum yet. he's in the freaking mirror. i don't think he has morning news channels in his mirror to tell him what is happening in the real world.
besides, there is a theory that callum is not fully human and has elves blood in him, so if that's true then pure-blood humans still can't do primal magic, only the human with elven ancestry.
@@Faolan-qe9vl there is no such thing as "flora/fauna arcanum". arcana are "the secret of the Primal, or its meaning", as lujanne said. there are six primals, and thus, there are six arcana. moon's arcanum is that "that appearances are the truth of reality".
but i agree on everything else. plus, i think, elves knew that such magic practices would lead to the extinction of many species. we already see it in human kingdoms, since there are almost no magic creatures. it's implied that they were hunted down by dark mages. elves foresaw that too.
@@escapee8598 I just thought Callum shouldnt be the first human to unlock the arkaneum. There could of been other humans who learned to unlock it. Also because aarvous knows all 6 primal magic sources he must have unlocked the arkaneum like Callum did so I thought he could know humans can unlock it. Aarvaros knows a lot about the primal sources so it isn't surprising if he knew humans could learn magic if they unlock the arkaneum.
But you are right that he has been looked in the mirror for a while so he may not know.
If he does know humans can unlock magic then there would be no need for him to teach dark magic to them. So I guess he doesn't know.

I'm starting to think that humans who have a blood line that involves elves can actually do primal magic but instead of being born with the ability they have to unlock the arkaneum.

Aaravos being only evil with no motivation would be disappointing. While I don't think he has the greater good in mind I doubt he is just evil for the sake of it.

Season three convinced me that Aaravos is pretty evil. But that isn't something bad, evil characters can still be very relatable and have reasonable motivations propelling their questionable methods.

There are many possibilities for Aaravos. I think the Prometheus comparison is a likely one, where he's responsible for giving humans the ability to wield dark magic and is imprisoned by the other magical creatures as punishment. Whether he's a villain or not is a little trickier. I could see him being a Sauron-like entity filled with malevolence after centuries of imprisonment, waiting for a vessel desperate enough to connect him back to the real world and restore him to his former power.
However, I could also see him being akin to God Emperor Leto II from the Dune mythos-as a Startouch archmage of incomparable knowledge, perhaps he has seen all possible futures of the world and is working to ensure that the most desirable one for _all_ creatures comes to fruition, even if that means sowing tragedy and destruction in the present.
QBG I think along the lines of this: maybe Aaravos had someone close to him who wanted to help the humans but something happened to them (perhaps staged by another elf, hence why he cares so little for his kind) and he wanted to fulfill their wish, albeit in his own distorted manner to get back at the elves for what happened? Or maybe I’m just too much of romantic

Now we know Elarion is a city founded by the dark mage from the intro and the dragon is Sol Regem
Aarovos also has a ton of parallels to Lucifer. Especially when referencing the midnight star, the brightest star. He is quite literally a fallen star (star elf) trapped in a prison for all of eternity.
I'm not sure he "never lies." That could in itself BE the lie...
I just think Aaravos reminds me too much of Lucifer, the Morning Star of Judeo-Christian theology, who some sects take to be Satan, the Devil, a fallen angel who appears as an angel of light, but is "the father of all lies," the Deceiver/Accuser of mankind's hubris.
🤷♂️ Perhaps we'll see a him to be a more sympathetic character, but EVERY instinct I have just makes me believe this Aaravos is just playing with mankind, trying to unseat the balance of power in heaven and Xadia for his own purposes...or even just his amusement.

It would be really refreshing if the show hasn't a big bad character - there is already so much missunderstanding and conflict in the show that I feel it doesn't need an evil character to be interresting. I mean, there are a lot of other genres that are able to go without a single character in the evil-department, so why limit it to these genres?
Plus, evil and good are just two sides of the same medal and depend on who is telling the story.

Travis letchford He knew the name of the key. It doesn’t indicate that he knew who Aaravos was as a person. Like knowing that an inanimate object in another country has a proper name attached to it but not knowing it was named after a person or even knowing who that person is.

There is a theory on reddit that Elarion is the 6th human kingdom and in some kind of war/struggle against a dragon the city appealed to the star elves for help and Aaravos gave them the ability to use dark magic and Elarion became the center of learning for dark magic. I like this theory a lot better than Elarion being a person, but we will see!

Grandfather would make more sense and the fact that both Callum and Ezran have magic (Callum =Sky, Ezran can talk to animals), Queen Sarai should be the one to pass that magic down as she makes them related.

The simplest explanation to why dark magic is bad is because you kill magical creatures to get their magic.
@@linamayela couldn't the same be said for eating. Carnivores eat other creatures to get the energy contained in their prey's bodies. That way the carnivores can live. Now obviously, if you don't need to sacrifice something in order to live a healthy life you shoudn't. However, there are some situations where you have to make that choice. Like when Claudia sacrificed the baby deer to save her brother from being stuck, unable to move anything save for his head.
