  • In this episode, I'm taking us back to the early days of text messages, ringtones, and camera phones to talk all about the evolution of cell phones in the 2000s. I talk about the role of our cell phones in our lives throughout the years, all the unique and fun cell phones that were on the market when I was a teen, and the many ways we could get into trouble for running up a massive cell bill (ahem, buying ring tones). I also share my early cell phone memories and some of my favorite 2000s ring tone song picks!

Do you guys remember cell phone charms? And the two little holes on the side of the phone you could thread them through. I miss those. My favorite was a red and yellow beaded dragonfly I got on vacation with my mom in Mexico. 💖

The texting phone bills were astronomical, and also it was literally a ream of paper that my dad received in a box in the mail lol hoping he didn’t get a record of the ACTUAL messages 😳

My first cellphone was the pink razor and only used to keep in contact with my parents in 2006. Now, I was 8 years old and the idea of kid my age at the time having a cellphone was UNHEARD OF. But I had some anxiety as a child and brought me reassurance to call my parents at any time if I needed them. I had the pink razor until I was 11 years old. And yes, I was all over the custom ringtones. By the time I was 11 a couple of my friends had a cellphone, but definitely was not common. The texting on the razor was such a pain omg but like you said we became experts very quickly. That’s the one thing I don’t miss with old cellphones. I remember my ringtone was Good Girls Go Bad by Cobra Starship in the 5th grade…good gracious. Such fond and sweet memories though!

It all changed sooo much when i got my first smartphone in 2005 & could use AIM on it with a letter keys!
And we made free ringtones on PC from torrent song downloads & transferred them to our phones via physical cords around that time.

I was in elementary school in the early and mid 2000s and the way I always thought I was going to have a bedazzled flip phone when I was a teenager one day but by then everyone was already getting iPhones 😂 still mad about it

I changed my faceplate to this orange tropical one I also bought at a booth in the mall. I don’t have any of my old phones (lost in a typical Midwest flood lol T^T) but It’s crazy I can remember what it felt like to press the keys and the weight of the phone if makes any sense. Me and my brother and my cousins also recorded a rap for my voicemail LOL!! On the Cingular Wireless network too no less! Then I had LG plain flip phone for the longest. I didn’t have a camera phone or iPhone until maybe junior or senior year of college and used my actual digital camera and ipods for a long time!! I was always jealous of those who had a blinged out Sidekick that they got customized at the mall. My parents said it was too expensive lolol…but at least I had snake and solitaire on my phones LOL!! It’s nice to see the resurgence of colorful tech with iPhones now coming indifferent colors. I still customize my cases with stickers so my personality comes out someway somehow.

Fellow 87 baby here, I learned the hard way about how risky texting could be. I was 16 and had just gotten a phone that wasn't a basic brick. I would text my boyfriend at the time and, of course, didn't track how many I was sending (or receiving for that matter). My parents flipped when they saw the bill. It was my whole paycheck from work that week to pay for it. 😅😅😅 Also, roaming was crazy. I lived in the mountains of SC/NC, so roaming was everywhere unless you had Verizon. My 8yo son thinks the late 90s/early 00s was the Dark Ages.

I literally hate how boring phones are now! I remember someone could would forget their cellphone in a room and you would instantly know whose it was by the physical look of it. Now you have to open the screen to look at the wallpaper to get an idea of who's phone it is.

I'm from a developing country. the cell phone culture you talk about actually stayed around way longer in my area but a key difference was most of us used prepaid sims so if we ran out of load to call or text others, then that was it! I had to use a keypad phone sometimes in highschool when my smartphone was confiscated so that was how i developed my personality lol.

The first picture I ever took with my first camera phone, was almost a disaster. I'd taken a pic of my bewbs to send to my BF at the time, and accidentally sent it to my entire address book.
I immediately realized what I'd done and screamed like I was being murdered as I panicked thinking about my Dad, uncles, aunts, people I worked with, and essentially everyone I know, getting a sext from me. The ONLY thing that saved me, was that ten digit dialing wasn't a thing here yet, for local calls, and so I didn't have everyone's area codes saved in my address book. I only had the 7 numbers saved, and texting required all 10 digits. The sext went to my bf, as he lived long distance, and my bestie, who also lived long distance, so I had their area codes saved. I got a reply back from my bestie with an "uh friend? Did you mean to send this?" Called her and we laughed about it, because what's some bewbs between friends.
My throat still hurts thinking about how loudly I screamed 🤣🤣

My first cell phone was that Nokia brick style phone too 😂I remember trying to make it cute by looking for faceplates at the kiosks in the mall. Such nostalgia when you showed yours! Does anyone remember the Nextel flip phones that had the walky talky chirp thing? 😂

Let me tell you something about big cell phone bills: when i got my first phone that had access to the internet, my parents had no idea that it could do that, nor did we know how it could affect the bill. So, I would continually use the internet on my phone to check social media and other things. Fast forward a few weeks, we get the bill, and what was normally in the ballpark of $100 for three phones, jumped up to the neighborhood of about $400, and my parents freaked out about that.
Thankfully, they talked to Verizon, and they did get it down to what my parents normally paid. 😅
Also, what was bbm like? Was it like iMessage for iPhones today?

the most annoying part of texting with t9 was the fact that once you got fast on it then it was annoying how you had a lil mini pause if you wanted to type a different or repeat letter on the same number key

Wow, so I don't think ringback tones weren't a thing here in canada, and by the sounds of it, thank GOD!! The boomer in me is cringing at the thoughts of hearing someone's shitty emo ringback song, playing in my ear, as I waited for them to answer. I hated my space, for the same reason. Too loud. Team old people. I'd drift the phone, and never call that person again 🤣🤣
