  • Welcome back to part two of our journey through the evolution of fashion & pop culture trends of the 2000s. This week we cover a lot of ground as we dive into the middle of the decade. I discuss the impact of post-9/11 rhetoric on pop culture and fashion, our obsession with celebrity, wealth, and designer labels during this time period, and I share some of the biggest shifts I experienced in fashion during the mid-2000s.

Happy 37th Bday Jenna!!! I really disliked the aughts both while living through them in my 20s (I was terribly superficial, competitive, and constantly 'falling behind') and in retrospect for the wider culture, but your take on them helps me to see the humor, folly, and gentleness of those days to better let my past go. Much appreciated for the sweet nature you inject into remembering American pop and youth culture!

You definitely hit the nail on the head about cheap, chunky, bold colored accessories as well as girly/cheesy prints. I remember wearing a lot of tops that had stars, hearts, skulls, clouds, suns, moons, polka dots, and butterflies on them. These typically came from Kohl's, Penney's, and Wal-Mart. I lowkey miss the cheesy prints.

    Happy Birthday Jenna!!! 🥳🎂
Paparazzi culture was absolutely wild and abusive! Let's hope that never happens again! 🙏❤️
*Whenever I think of the McBling era, I think of the movie Thirteen! And the Gossip Girl books were awesome!!!*

I remember boycotting Abercrombie and Fitch in high school for some of their graphic tees that were just blatantly racist. At that time, you were considered overreacting for something like that, and i remember being met with many eyerolls from my peers.

I vaguely remember this being talked about. We didn’t have an A&F near us so I don’t think I ever saw the shirts, but like you said, it didn’t get a lot of attention at that time

I highly recommend the 2022 Netflix documentary White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch. I thought it was fascinating!

I think the dog tag necklace is pretty obviously linked to September 2001

It wasnt until the 1920s that the body became the fashion trend, that is when skinny bodies started to be on trend. Before that it was the undergarments that made the shape of the body. The mid 2000s was the worse area for clothing size, everything was super small. The mid 2000s was all about how small and skinny youre body is, the body was on full display. As I go thrift shopping and see pants from that era, there was no room for a butt, the seam is sooo small. Mid 2000s to late 2000s went back to 1950s style misogyny.

I actually feel like people are going to cringe at the performative inclusivity we have now in the same way we cringe at the rigid body shapes of the 2000s. It's almost uncool or unwise to admit you want to look and feel slim now which can be just as damaging as the opposite back in the day. Idk, I'm slightly younger than you and clinging onto my ballet flats and skinny jeans so what do I know 🤣

Omg ! Do you know Liz Phair ? I saw her today and got nostalgic and thought of this channel. You also remind me a lot of her back in the 2000s. Great vid😊
