So much nostalgia for this system. Bought in 1999 with a VGA adaptor, key board, mouse, and Quake 3. I remember feeling like wow, consoles are really starting to catch up to PCs. It looked incredible on my monitor. and playing in mass multiplayer online matches was a first in console history. Sega were pioneers in so many aspects of gaming history.
If I want to play more games like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Rayman 2, and Super Magnetic Neo, what would you recommend? Or is that all Dreamcast has to offer for character action games other than Kao the Kangaroo and Floigan Bros?
I'd love to see you two doing a PC-Engine, Atari Jaguar or Amiga CD32 episode. The PCE/TG16 was great but the video of the others should be a very funny one :-D -especially when talking about the controllers. Actually, what you should do is to invite some younger friends who never heard of those systems and confront them with the consoles/games by giving them the controllers at the latest possible moment :-D :-D
It is always a pleasure to see you and M.J. working together, man. Your first-hand experience and knowledge add a lot to the fascination of the videos. Thanks, John!
One thing I love about Metal Jesus Rocks is that he seems like a genuinely great dude. His guests too, this guy seems so happy talking about reliving his experiences on the amazing Dreamcast
He does a good job of letting them talk and explore what they want and just popping in. Not on a Conan level of interviewing but definitely one of the best in his space.
I JUST ordered a Dreamcast for the first time with jedi power battles, nfl2k1, soul calibur, ecco and rush 2049.i can't wait. Always wanted one as a kid. This video was helpful, so thanks!
my dream cast still works and looks brand new and my games are in perfect condition. I bought it on 9-9 1999 on release day. I had to wait in a long line. it was a big deal and a lot of people wanted one.
14 years of storage.. just busted it out for some 4x4 evolution. I bought on release in 99 and with all the add ons it was 600 bucks. Even came with one free year of msn dial up access. Still have my og email. Z71offroad2000@MSN.COM. hit me up i need a keyboard or a way to usb mod for a pc board. Thanks. I am running it with a vga converterjust picked up and it keeps native frame rate on a new 32in monitor.
Dreamcast is by far the best console released for its time, in my opinion. I still have my same dreamcast that my brother gave me 15+ years ago. It still works completely great and I often play it also! The only work I've had to do to the dreamcast is.... Clean the Eye "reader" with a Q-tip for 2 seconds... and boom, was reading discs again like a champ! This system featured the new CD's, one of the first to include internet (if not the first) in which SOME games are still played online today! The Memory cards had games INSIDE the memory card if u had the game also. "Sonic Adventure / Zombie Revenge" were the ones I remember. After the dreamcast, they should have kept the concept of removable/playable memory cards. If they kept up with it, we would see people playing on xbox/ps4, only to remove the memory card to play the game (or an alternative) on the go! Possibly even using the power of the controller itself! No, they dont exist! BUT think of all that Dreamcast could and had done to the console gaming world. Internet being massive!
and with 95% shitlord games so it bit the dust.. what is the difference here between this and the Atari Jaguar? both overhyped ahead of their time shitlords that bit the dust...
yes, i played this at a friends house, was blown away by the tech at the time, also the game itself has so much to offer, it does get hard in mid to later game but the grind feels rewarding.
Dreamcast came out when I was in high school, and I had one friend who got it vs the ps2 and I remember we all went to his house to play Soul Caliber and Crazy Taxi! Last year I actually found a dreamcast for a great deal at a thrift store and I found a copy of Marvel vs Capcom inside it! I definitely look forward to picking up more games for it.
I still have my Dreamcast since Launch. My favorite games are Soul Caliber, Crazy Taxi, House of the dead with the gun, Ready to Rumble, Hydro Thunder, and Code Veronica. Also Gauntlet Legends. I’ll have to pick up Marvel Vs Capcom 1 and 2. And there’s some games I never heard of. Went right over my Head! LoL
Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online, Power Stone 1-2, RE: Code Veronica, Headhunter, Jet Set Radio, L.O.L., Grandia 2, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure 1-2, Sonic Shuffle, Record of Lodoss War.
Great list--and yes! FINALLY some love for Grandia 2! Here's a few to add to your list... Project Justice, Crazy Taxi, Sword of the Berserk, Virtua Tennis, SEAMAN (yeah it was weird, but its an experience) and who could forget BLUE STINGER?
In addition to what's been said: Shenmue 1&2, Sonic Adventure 1&2, Dynamite Cop, Toy Commander, Rayman 2, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5, Rez, 18 Wheeler, Virtua Tennis 2, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, Metropolis Street Racer, Samba de Amigo, Street Fighter III: Double Impact, Outtrigger, Headhunter and if you like sports at least one each of the NBA, NCAA, NFL & NHL 2K games, etc...
Toy commander is awesome, a friend brought the system and game to my house and this was the first time I saw 3D without Maggie's like last gen consoles, was great and the gameplay is varied and pretty awesome
Never understood why this didnt sell. I remember I was 18 when it came and I bought it day 1 or 2 and I absolutely loved it. The online capability was way ahead of its time.
Well there was the PS2 which could play dvds and was the cheapest DVD player you could get and also the Dreamcast’s online was overshadowed by the original Xbox with Halo
I think the biggest issue was the lack of FPS games. FPS games were really growing around this age, and the lack of a second thumbstick on the Dreamcast controller meant that FPS' were nearly impossible on the console.
@@arieson7715 Definitely, also some people consider the Dreamcast a 5th generation console. Pretty much as soon as the PS2 came out the Dreamcast was obsolete. The Dreamcast cast could never think of running games such as Halo, Black, Call of Duty 1 and 2, etc. Also people didn’t like Sega at the time as they had made so many mistakes. They made the Sega CD and 32x when they should have been focusing on the Saturn. People saw the Saturn as a worse PlayStation and nobody bought it because of that. The Dreamcast was and still is a misunderstood console.
@@TheMusicEnthusiast539 No, the Saturn was like $399 at launch, which was the day they announced it at E3. (It's in the stores right now). Then the Sony guy came up and famously said "299" for their entire pitch, which undercut the Sega Saturn by 100 dollars, allowing consumers to save money, which left the saturn sadly dead on arrival.
What many report wrong about the Dreamcast was that it did fairly well until the original Xbox released and hugely overshadowed the offerings given by SEGA on their home console with Xbox Live.
One of the best Dreamcast games that always gets overlooked is Toy Commander. That is one of my favorite games on the Dreamcast. It is vehicle combat but you are basically playing as toys in a child's imagination. It sounds weird but it is seriously amazing, highly recommend.
Daryn i spent hours playing toy commander against friends in multiplayer mode. The glitch in the cellar where you could go and hide in the ceiling and reappear out of the floor came in very handy.
I love it in Skies of Arcadia because you know a random battle is going to happen before it happens because the disc drive will start up to preload it.
0:40 wait.. I thought it sold MORE than the wii u.... EDIT: the dreamcast sold faster but sold less overtime. it took the wii u 3 years to do what the dreamcast did in 18 months
MY favorite DC (my second favorite console right after the SNES) games are: - Toukon Retsuden 4 - Soul Calibur - Resident Evil Code:Veronica - Skies of Arcadia - The House of the Dead 2 - Confidential Mission - Tetris 4D - Fire Pro Wrestling D - Shenmue 1 & 2 - Grandia 2 - NHL 2K2 - NBA 2K2 - Le Mans 24 Hours - Rayman 2: The Great Escape - Giant Gram: All Japan ProWrestling 2 - Giant Gram 2000: All Japan Pro Wrestling 3 - Rainbow Cotton - Dead or Alive 2 - Golf Shiyouyo 2 - Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - Virtua Tennis 2 / Tennis 2K2 / Power Smash 2 - Headhunter - Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 - Crazy Taxi 1 & 2 - Fur Fighters - Samba de Amigo - Sega Rally 2 - Mortal Kombat Gold - Capcom vs SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001 - Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves / Garou: Mark of the Wolves - Sega Bass Fishing 2 - Bomberman Online - Virtua Cop 2
As an Sega enthousiast I finally bought one this weekend as an early chrismas gift to myself. With Virtua Tennis, Virtua Fighter 3, HydroThunder, Buggy Heat, Millenium Soldier & Snow Surfers.More games will follow. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
What an awesome console it still is.So happy I bought one.Been playing a lot of Snow Surfers and Virtua Fighter 3, both awesome games, remarkable cause these are not even considered top games for the system.Bought Soul Calibur & Star Wars Racer today on Ebay..I like that a lot of Dreamcast games are actually affordable! Not like these absurd prices for Saturn games.Bought a second controller too.
This was my very first console as a kid but I went on a trip to the beach with my family and it got ruined because of sand unfortunately. I just picked up another today super stoked to start playing again, it’s been over 14 years
Great video. As a collector and someone who has the entire NA collection, who also happens to be a HUGE Dreamcast fan, the controller in my book is one of the best. Dual analog sticks would have been nice sure, but it wasn't necessary for the games that the Dreamcast was kicking out at the time. I think had the Dreamcast been more successful, you would have seen upgraded controllers and peripherals in the following years to keep up. Also, yes the controller wire was on the bottom, but it did so to make room for the VMU card. And they did put a wire notch under the VMU slot to tuck your wire in (and pointing away). So it was never an issue. In fact, the design I think is pretty ingenious. It's one of my favorite controllers of all time.
Sulemaan Hussain It went all in with the online. No console until Xbox 360 had online features at launch like the Dreamcast did. It even had a web browser. Another example, it supported 480p resolutions, which again, nothing until 360 did. I could keep listing stuff all night. Plus, its games were also way ahead of their time, including incredible open worlds for the first time, mmo's, perfect arcade ports... It had Shenmue, which is easy to forget how way ahead of its time was as well as Seaman, a game where you interact with the characters through a microphone. Again, I could continue all day.
*I'm 28* (born 1990). I'm not old, but for the true young folks on RUclips I'd like to explain that at the time of the Dreamcast's "heyday" my parents had only recently bought me a PS1. As a 9 to 10 year old I have a distinct memory of seeing the *Dreamcast* in Toys-R-Us. Due to its appearance I perceived it as a PS1 or N64 competitor. I had no idea it was a "next gen" console. I didn't know the actual PS1 competitor, the SEGA Saturn, even existed until recent years. I thought of the Dreamcast as a PS1/N64 competitor. When I think of SEGA I recall my time spent with a cousin that had both a *Game Gear* and a *Sega Genesis* (he was a big Mortal Kombat fan). He went straight to the PS2 from the Genesis if I recall. Maybe he had an N64 in between? Not sure. I just thought I'd give y'all an idea of what the mid 90s and early 2000s gaming was like for kids. The first time I actually had a choice of a console it was between the PS2 and Xbox (circa 2002). I've always loved an underdog so I chose the Xbox... I admired that it was basically a Pentium III PC with a hard drive and you could upload music to it from retail CDs. Might seem an odd or irrelevant feature, but it meant I could cruise Vice City and Liberty City to a custom soundtrack of my own making! Also, no dumb memory cards.
Hey, I'm from 1990 too! I know what you mean - my parents refused to buy me a console because they "brainwash you" until I was 9 and they suddenly changed their mind. They bought me a Dreamcast. At the time I was actually a little disappointed with it, I remember being grateful to have a console finally but still feeling left out when all my friends had a Playstation (and were holding out for the PS2). I was young and just wanted to be like everyone else... I was foolish! All these years later I can safely say the Dreamcast is my favorite system of all time. Looking back I played some real gems on it in my childhood. It also had a Renaissance period in my late teens/early college years too when I found out all I had to do to get new games for it was burn a CD with discjuggler. It gave me and my housemates many drunken hours of competitive fun!
Same here, I just turned 30, but the Dreamcast is probably my favorite system of all time. When I was 12 I traded my N64 for a refurbished Dreamcast. I truly felt like I was stepping into next gen when I played it. Not only were the graphics incredible, but the type of games it had were more enjoyable for me since I was getting closer to being a teenager. Unfortunately it was discontinued, and finding games was really difficult, especially since my mom moved us from San Diego to a small town in Texas (my parents split for a while). I still have it, but I need to get it fixed.
I got the keyboard and mouse with Quake 3 because I was like "fuck playing Quake on a controller". The DC was way better than the PC we had at the time, in fact the DC was the first time we had internet access in our house too... having a mouse and keyboard made that a lot better too.
The design always reminded me of my neighbors "Lotus Elise, especially the noise this console made; you could really hear the amount of hardware packed into the case. IMO probably the most underrated console of the past 30 years. Soul Calibur was also one of the reason I took a chance on this machine.... probably one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. That and my divorce LOL
Wow, no mention of Shenmue, Shenmue 2 and Shadow Man in any of these 4 Sega Dreamcast videos. Shadow Man was something else. i recommend everyone play Shadow Man, especially on the Dreamcast as that version was definitely the best version of that game. Shadow Man 2econd Coming on the PlayStation 2 was pretty good as well.
November 1999 a new games store opened up in my city and i could play Soul Calibur and Hydro Thunder at the store and it was so magical i had to run home and back and i bought it that same day. Still my all time favorite console.
I found a dreamcast with two controllers (no vmu but i have one from my original which is not working anymore) for 5$ sold on street with no garanty for it to be working but it worked
Yo I still have dynamite cop that was so cool to.own a game.that played exactly like a copy cat of die hard the arcade game so awesome that game and at the end if you did a co op game the end after killing the final boss the two players have to fight one an other in order to advance to the actual ending of the game . They don't make.games as awesome as that anymore
I LOVED THE DREAMCAST!!! After watching this I’ve decided to dig mine out and start collecting!! I have Shenmue, Star Wars pod racer, House of the Dead 2, chu chu rocket, the grinch, chicken run, virtua soccer, South Park chefs love shack, sonic adventure 1 and 2, wwf royal rumble, ecw anarchy rules, jet grind radio, soul caliber, resident evil code Veronica, dead or alive 2, iron aces, sega rally, marvel vs Capcom 1 & 2, crazy taxi 1 & 2, grand theft auto 2, space channel 5 STARTING THE COLLECTION NOW! So glad I never got rid!!
I know you said there'd be people like me in the comments, but dang! How could you not even mention Crazy Taxi? That shit is some of the most fun to be had on the system, especially if you're simply looking for a great arcade port, of which the Dreamcast has countless ones. And I'm far from the biggest sports game fan, but Virtua Tennis is also a blast. The controls are really simple but somehow it never gets repetitive or unengaging. Dreamcast really is the best retro game console to collect for, mainly because collecting for it is actually *gasp* fun. There were so many weird and goofy peripherals and games that came out for the thing (Seaman, anyone?), and actually finding and coming across these oddities is always a joy for me when I visit retro game stores. And then you have the amazing fact that indie developers are STILL making games for the damn thing to this VERY DAY. That's insane. I haven't played any of these games myself (would love to eventually), but I've heard they're pretty good for usually being by only a couple people.
Grandia 2 is horribly underrated, i wouldnt prefer it over Skies, but i wouldnt hesitate to recommend it to anyone who loves a good old fashioned turn based RPG.
Yep, Grandia 2 is the Dreamcast game I liked the most. Good looking game, fleshed out interesting characters, great combat system coupled with a great camera, we'll written main story and quests. It has been criticized for being a linear designed game world rather than being wide open, but that never bothered me. It is a very good JRPG.
Great choices of games as well as hardware overview! Dreamcast is my favorite system and you did it justice. Thank you! It’s nice that you are local to me as well. I’m glad you’re out there, making things happen and succeeding.
All games are actually compatible with VGA on Dreamcast, some simply didn't have the boot sector included in the disc to bypass the validation. There is however a simple bypass, put the game in, unplug the cable from the back of the system, turn the system on and when you hear the first very loud laser scan immediately plug the cable back in. When the system does its second laser scan a few seconds later it will then output to the display. You can also bypass this by using a boot disc, Codebreaker disc, or GameShark disc.
I have nearly 200 Dreamcast games, and the library is only about 250 deep, so if there are any I haven't found them. I have at least 5 games that are VGA 'incompatible', and this workaround bypasses the verification on all of them, so I'm going to boldly say it likely works with them all.
Sorry, but there are actually more than a handful of games that absolutely can't be hacked, or tricked into VGA. There was a guy making a bios patch to force them but you have to pretty much have a bios mod, and wait for him to work through the games. Last Blade 2 is one that isn't compatible for sure.
A beautiful console with the best game game line up for the time. Countless hours on Crazy Taxi, Dynamite Cop, Powerstone, Sonic adventure, Sega Rally, Soul Caliber, Daytona, NBA Showtime in Horse mode and so much! more. The Ultimate home arcade experience! I made sure i kept my Dreamcast as other consoles i use to give away to siblings. This is one console that needs a mini release!
We should take notes from Sega’s history. A powerful console, features ahead of their time and SEGA’s name in the industry until then. Even those the Dreamcast was a tragedy for Sega.
I picked up my pre-ordered Dreamcast at midnight on 9.9.99 at Fox Hills Mall in Culver City, CA. I think it was from an old Electronics Boutique. Best part was that Gary Coleman, who was working security at the mall, handed me my box. I had a bunch of acessories and controllers including the maracas with Samba de Amigo. I eventually sold the whole set to some lucky buyer on eBay.
Try amazing person with so much knowledge about something I'm truly passionate about willing to share everything he has, I just saw your last name is dick, life has punished you enough
I love the Dreamcast controller I wish the system got more games. Maybe Sega can make consoles again but also put their games third party. We need the Dreamcast 2!!
My top 10 is... 1. Shenmue 1 2. Shenmue 2 3. Sonic Adventure 4. Grandia 2 5. Skies of Arcadia 6. Toy Commander (just loved playing those toy vehicles) 7. Resident Evil Code Veronica 8. Crazy Taxi 9. Ready 2 Rumble Boxing 10. NFL2K (the only sports game I played on the Dreamcast)
It was and will always be one of my favorite consoles. How I miss playing on a Dreamcast console. I deeply regret selling mine as well as my Neo Geo CD and many others.
This is by far my favorite console of all time, with N64 at a close 2nd. I love metal Jesus’ videos about the Dreamcast. I have a now extensive collection of games, thanks to these videos highlighting some of the hits and their favorites. Skies of Arcadia comes next week! Keep it up!
A game I really like that was not mentioned in this video is Record of Lodoss War. A Diablo-esque RPG based on the anime the game is named after. Not a cheap game, but not outrageously expensive either (at least at the time of this comment)
Bought a Dreamcast right before they were discontinued. Got a bundle with NFL 2K1, NBA 2K1, and MLB 2K1, all for just $100!!! I didn’t get many more games but I still love the system!
It sold less than the WIIU?? Can you even compare? Dreamcast achieved all of its sales in a little over a year. Out of fairness comparing the first two years would be more appropriate.
Sulemaan Hussain yea I don't think there's any hating going on. But even still to compare the two in regards to lifespan, Sega went through a major shift and restructure by exiting the console market. Whereas Nintendo was was simply putting all chips on the Switch while keeping WIIU in life support. And one of the main and unspoken reasons for Dreamcast's short lifespan was because of the inherent flaws that the games could be bootlegged to average discs rendering profit for the game makers nil.
Jonathan Mugridge Nintendo was putting all its chips on switch? It is funny how many people forget the insane sales stats of the ds and 3ds family, and the huge profit margins that come along with them.... Pokemon anyone?
Since the 10 million is the total worldwide sales, the time frame would begin in November of 1998 when the Dreamcast launched in Japan. Also, it took several months to ship out and sell off the final remaining stock of systems after they quit manufacturing the Dreamcast at the end of March, 2001. I wish I could remember the source but I think it was either GameInformer or EGM that included a news snippet in a late 2001 or early 2002 issue that mentioned that Sega shipped the last stock of systems to retailers in November of 2001. The minimum time frame would then be three years, from November, 1998 to November, 2001, that it took for Sega to sell 10 million Dreamcasts. I'm not comparing to the Wii U, though. I just thought this would be interesting info.
"I feel like a talk about this game a lot, but Episode 1 PODRACER is my favourite Dreamcast game." 10 seconds later "What I love about this game is, your.. craft? I forget what they're called."
I think I had it for PC as well as Dreamcast, but actually it ran smoother on my Dreamcast (we couldn’t afford high end video accelerators (Graphics Card) for our PC back then). I could have sworn it said Podracer on the disc, but I actually just went over and looked at my GD-Rom (my Dreamcast outlasted both of my Xboxes), and it says Racer.
The cable placement on the controllers was genius. Most people had their cables under the TV-table and this made it very natural once you put the controller on the table. The cable ran back and under the table forward towards the TV.

Ouch. No love for RE: Code Veronica? It was a game-changer and debuted on the Dreamcast. The Special Edition Code Veronica Dreamcast console is amazing. I want one so bad but they are pricey.
Would you believe i still have Code Veronica and Skies of Arcadia. Somehow, I was never compelled to trade them in. Glad i didn't because Skies of Arcadia is a bonafide classic and I have a Dreamcast. One of the best consoles of all time. Sega finally got it right but made the same mistake they always make: come out ahead of the competition,
I still got a few games of my old one, I had gotten RE Code Veronica from ordering it online, was the very first time I'd ever got anything off the net, it was 15 dollars cheaper, took about 2 weeks, but boy I was happy the day it showed up, had.Sonic, Soul Calibur, Tony Hawk, Herra's BMX, Black bass or something like it, it had a secret lure that was sonic, NBA, NFL. I liked the console was good while it lasted
To everyone criticizing the cord being at the bottom...you've been doing it wrong. You loop the cable back, and on the back of the controller there is a notch that you push it into so that it is then coming out of the top. They did this because with the two vmu slot, there is nowhere central at the top of the controller to output the cable. How can people not know this! If you don't believe me, Google "Dreamcast controller rear". I bought my Japanese Dreamcast during launch week with Godzilla (I know...), Virtual Fighter 3 TB and Sonic Adventure and I've always known to loop the cable.
I actually picked up a Dreamcast at Retropalloza this past weekend! I also got an additional controller, two VMUs (one in the standard color and one in green), a 4x Memory Card, and 4 games: Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Chu Chu Rocket, and Marvel vs Capcom 2.
I am 43 and have lived Dreamcast since day one!! Great fighting games, amazing weirdo anime games. I recommend: Last Blade 2 (mighty SNK fighting game), Record of Lodess War (Diablo style action RPG based on a really obscure anime saga),, and Sword of the Berserker (kick ass gore gore gorey action hack n slash based on another old weirdo anime). John! Great seeing you here! Love yinz guys! Dream on 😷
PS- If you just want to literally laugh yourself stupid, grab “sega bass fishing” for a dollar fifty, and dove into some of the WORST Japanese “ingrish” voice over attempts EVER. From age nineteen up til today, my close friends and I quote it when driving “TURN DA ROD RIGHT TURN DSVRID LEF-Right!” “OK, average six GOOD JOB!!!!!”🥴
Grandia 2 for Dreamcast changed my life! Immortal likes brawlers like I do. I really enjoyed zombie revenge and dynamite cop, really love your videos and your guests as well!
Had to import Rez. One of my favorites. Speaking of the Dreamcast being loud, I remember playing through D2 a couple times thinking my Dreamcast was going to explode lol
Rainbow Dash There's a thing called Codebreaker that you need to burn to a CD. Put it in the console and turn it on. Then take the disc out and insert your USA game. It should run swimmingly.
The Icystorm 9 ok, thanks, wwill try to burn on today or tomorrow, I wanted to play crazy taxi but then notice it wouldn't run ( usa version) but I have sonic adventures ( japan) and it played , so I was like " wow must be hard to get a japan version of a console"
yeah nice so you got a Turd System for free that bit the dust against PS2 and Xbox... thats like if somebody donated you a Turd in the Mailbox... nice man :)
@@SugarRainer stfu you little bitch, everybody bought that system when it came out including you, and I didn't pay shit for it so how you gonna hate 20 years later. Gtfoh with that shit
I would say the Dreamcast arcade stick is a must have accessory if you're wanting to delve into amazing library of fighting games and Shoot em ups on the system
I recently bought my first Dreamcast and I would recommend buying the following items: Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2 and Capcom -vs.- SNK as the first fighting games. These are easier to find and normally well below $100 each. Definitely recommend buying Cheats -N- Codes Volune 1 for two reasons. 1. It's a boot loader which can use to play Japanese imports. 2. It has save game files and GameShark codes. If EA and 2K have pissed you off with micro transactions and loot boxes, definitely pick up the sports games like NFL 2K - NFL 2K2. Nothing like a football game that's actually focused on football and not MUT. I picked up Rainbow Six (w/ Eagle Watch missionpack) as I despise the current crop of FPSs on consoles and PC. It was good to play the original "thinking man's" shooter. I also bought the fishing games and controller. I strongly recommend buying Japanese titles off eBay because they're usually less pricey than the US versions. If you have a boot disc then this is a slam dunk.
Corrina Barber I really prefer when MJR lists some of the less popular games for buying guides like this. Games like Shenmue, etc., are always on lists for the dreamcast anyway. So most people already know about them. And for someone looking to get a Dreamcast that knows absolutely nothing about it, this isn't the only video/article that they'll look into online
Knuckle Head if anyone only sees this video and dont see it they wouldn't know. He also didn't mention crazy taxi which is a must own for anyone collecting dreamcast games. As far as arcade ports go dreamcast did it the best, but they mentioned very few.
9.9.99 THAT date/advert is etched in stone on my cranium. I loved this system and vividly remember hounding my mom to get me it, which I did at a local BestBuy. The first game I picked up was Blue Stinger, which wasn't my favorite and quickly alleviated with Ready2Rumble; a fantastic arcade boxing game. I must sadly cop to "modding" my DC to play bootlegs, which my shitty DSL crawled to satiate. CrazyTaxi; Power Stone; NFL2K series, even though I wasn't a football fan (still not); Jet Grind Radio; Soulcalibur, were unbelievably awesome. Aesthetically it was beautiful and it was just a neat little system that was REALLY trying; and honestly stood out in comparison with the Dark Behemoth that was Original XBOX and weird PS2, which I still can't define too well. Unfortunately, I have to admit that I eventually dropped the system for the PS2, and a little bit of the Xbox when it was worth it, because Sony just dominated at that time, similarly to now. Dreamcast/Sega just didn't have the library to compete.
Used to game as kid and young adult. Never had a Dreamcast, but that is one retro console I would definitely consider starting a collection. Would be awesome if Sega released a state of the art console in 2021!
Hot tip: Do not plug or unplug controllers while the Dreamcast is on. It can easily short out and destroy the system. Always turn the console off prior to plugging in or unplugging controllers. Controller extensions are also available to increase the length of the pathetically short cable.
I have seen official Sega controllers short out the system because they were plugged in while the console was on. Plus, third party controllers have to be built to the same specs as the official Sega controllers. Obviously not the same shells, but the internal electronics must be the same.
Oh yeah, its not a guarantee that it will kill the console. Just that it is a possibility. Sorry if it came across that way. Better safe than sorry! Every Dreamcast is precious :P
You are seriously my savior! I have been watching your channel for 2 years. Skipped this video because I didnt think I would pick up a dreamcast. Got one today because I want to play imports as the console did great in Japan. Was testing it out and heard the loud drive and I got scared. Good to know it's just the console. Some fun Sega gaming in my future!
The Dreamcast will celebrate its *20th* year anniversary for the US launch on September 9th, 2019! I played Power Stone 2 for the first time a few days ago! It's a great 2-4 player 3D fighter/smash style game. Check it out!
I been having the same. Dreamcast since 2000 I recommend tony hawk pro skater 1 and 2 The house of the dead 2 ,crazy taxi , marvel vs capcom, street fighter alpha3, capcom vs snk. And king of fighters evolution
How do you make a Dreamcast video without mentioning the arguably huge indie scene that still exists and brings out new games for the Dreamcast on a regular basis nowadays? :( Let alone some of the games. :/
Sturmwind (shmup) Neo XYZ (shmup) (there's a lot of indie shmups) Wind&Water: Puzzle Battles (action puzzler, happens to be my favourite game of all time) Sturmwind and Neo XYZ might be somewhat hard to find at the moment for a reasonable price. Wind&Water recently got a reprint and is pretty cheap at the moment. Full disclaimer though, I'm somewhat invested with WInd&Water (working with the devs on some things for a steam re-release of the game. ;)) There's a fair amount of indie games that came out after the dreamcast "died" and there's still new games coming out this very year, just google search it, look at reviews and youtube footage etc. :)
There's aslo BREAKERS (officially licensed from Visco), Volgarr the Viking (developed by the very same team from the 360 version), Alice's Mom's Rescue, Saber Riders and the Star Sheriffs and many, many more :D
There's quite a few retro gaming stores on Etsy that sell home brew Dreamcast games. I use Coastline Games. The dude who owns it also makes repro's and custom games for the majority of the cartridge based consoles. All at pretty good prices too.
Phantasy star online was the precursor to my MMORPG addiction. It was my first experience with an MMORPG. I remember the first time hooking my dreamcast's 56k modem to the landline and logging into phantsy star online. My 11 year old mind was blown and that's all I did or played that summer. One of, if not my favorite and most memorable gaming experiences. I was then introduced to World of Warcraft.. 12 years of playing WoW later, I blame this awesome console and awesome game of phantasy online. Have just been chasing that dragon ever since, ha.
Love the Dreamcast, met my now wife in the Dreamcasts online chat room almost 20 years ago 🤣
What are your kids names?
Wow, congrats my dude
That's so cool

So much nostalgia for this system. Bought in 1999 with a VGA adaptor, key board, mouse, and Quake 3. I remember feeling like wow, consoles are really starting to catch up to PCs. It looked incredible on my monitor. and playing in mass multiplayer online matches was a first in console history. Sega were pioneers in so many aspects of gaming history.

Sega really went out fighting, This is my favorite console.
they died fighting, that alone is enough of praise for this console.
If I want to play more games like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Rayman 2, and Super Magnetic Neo, what would you recommend? Or is that all Dreamcast has to offer for character action games other than Kao the Kangaroo and Floigan Bros?
Sega went out fighting themselves lol
@Nonya BiZz it's the dreamcast logo
@Nonya BiZz shut the fuck up
Any day I get to hang with MJR and talk games is a great day!
+John Hancock thanks for helping with the video dude. You are AWESOME! :)
Sweet! Ur my fav MJR guest. Love your channel, too!
I hate you for your amazing collections >< So much envy lol
It is always a pleasure to see you and M.J. working together, man. Your first-hand experience and knowledge add a lot to the fascination of the videos. Thanks, John!
One thing I love about Metal Jesus Rocks is that he seems like a genuinely great dude. His guests too, this guy seems so happy talking about reliving his experiences on the amazing Dreamcast
He does a good job of letting them talk and explore what they want and just popping in. Not on a Conan level of interviewing but definitely one of the best in his space.

This video was helpful, so thanks!
my dream cast still works and looks brand new and my games are in perfect condition. I bought it on 9-9 1999 on release day. I had to wait in a long line. it was a big deal and a lot of people wanted one.
That’s interesting I walked into a eb in Raleigh NC on 9/11/99 and walked out with one. I think they only had 3-4 left though.
Give it to me.
Thanks. waaaaay ahead...
Internet being massive!
and thats why it has failed the world was not ready for the dream of the cast
and with 95% shitlord games so it bit the dust.. what is the difference here between this and the Atari Jaguar? both overhyped ahead of their time shitlords that bit the dust...
@@one_point21_gigawatts pathetic System who bit the Dust not because it was Ahead of their time but because it was Retarded...
Toy Commander is one of the hidden crown gems of the Dreamcast. I couldn't recommend any game more than it.
Took me forever to find out the name of it! Agreed
Remembering that game is what brought me here! I loved that game.
yes, i played this at a friends house, was blown away by the tech at the time, also the game itself has so much to offer, it does get hard in mid to later game but the grind feels rewarding.
They actually released very good version of Grandia 2 on steam, check it out!
Good list. Always happy to see some love for Code Veronica and Grandia 2
When they released Grandia II on Steam I didn't hesitate on buying it.
Still own my original Copy of Grandia 2 for PC. It's still one of the best J-RPG's out there.
The Movie Planet I still think the NBA 2k games were best on the dreamcast. The free throw mechanic alone was the best
Toy commander is awesome, a friend brought the system and game to my house and this was the first time I saw 3D without Maggie's like last gen consoles, was great and the gameplay is varied and pretty awesome
Ecco the dolphin is garbage
The multiplayer will keep you entertained for hours
Daryn i spent hours playing toy commander against friends in multiplayer mode. The glitch in the cellar where you could go and hide in the ceiling and reappear out of the floor came in very handy.

Sega DREAMCAST! This System was just ahead of it's time.
I remember playing Quake 3 Arena, Mulitplayer gaming against PC gamers xD
Can't forget unreal tournament!
No Jet Grind Radio, Virtua Tennis, Metropolis Street Racer, Sonic Adventure?
Those are popular games, everyone knows about them

You’re right about the Xbox. It’s so awesome. It’s my favorite 6th gen console. But I do love the Dreamcast and PS2 also.
star ,I'm born in the early 90's and my next door neighbour had one ,we used to play it everyday ,but it's an underrated game system.
Cruise Vice City with a soundtrack other than the radio already in the game? You're crazy. Vice city has the best music in there!
I bought the keyboard solely for typing of the dead, one of my favorite games ever. Dreamcast really is a great system
Toy Commander was one of my favorite games for this console.
Zachary Palco loved that game! my cousin and I would play it for hours!

did you play the special christmas level? It was included in one of the gaming magazines back in the day
Wow, no mention of Shenmue, Shenmue 2 and Shadow Man in any of these 4 Sega Dreamcast videos. Shadow Man was something else. i recommend everyone play Shadow Man, especially on the Dreamcast as that version was definitely the best version of that game.

STARTING THE COLLECTION NOW!
I'm still a huge fan of Grandia II, myself. Super fun RPG.
Hell yes. Skies of Arcadia is great, but I prefer Grandia 2. Its underrated and overlooked
Probably most play it on PS2.
That would be so unfortunate, since it's such an inferior version.
I think there is still a couple of games that cant do this.
I have nearly 200 Dreamcast games, and the library is only about 250 deep, so if there are any I haven't found them.
I have at least 5 games that are VGA 'incompatible', and this workaround bypasses the verification on all of them, so I'm going to boldly say it likely works with them all.
TheGameRoom Like MK gold.
Sorry, but there are actually more than a handful of games that absolutely can't be hacked, or tricked into VGA. There was a guy making a bios patch to force them but you have to pretty much have a bios mod, and wait for him to work through the games. Last Blade 2 is one that isn't compatible for sure.
Also, there are well over 700 games for Dreamcast, so don't know where you get off thinking that there is only 250.
I just bought a Dreamcast for 30 bucks at my local Dimple Records store. Amazing deal.
Give me it.
Just snagged one yesterday for $50, I'm very happy
The wacky races game is a must have for the system.

A game I really like that was not mentioned in this video is Record of Lodoss War. A Diablo-esque RPG based on the anime the game is named after. Not a cheap game, but not outrageously expensive either (at least at the time of this comment)
Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure 1&2 are must have. KAO the Kangaroo is a fun one too in my opinion.

It sold less than the WIIU?? Can you even compare? Dreamcast achieved all of its sales in a little over a year. Out of fairness comparing the first two years would be more appropriate.
Jonathan Mugridge that's what I was thinking.
That one year was a wild fucking ride tbh
"I feel like a talk about this game a lot, but Episode 1 PODRACER is my favourite Dreamcast game."
10 seconds later
"What I love about this game is, your.. craft? I forget what they're called."
He said Racer not Podracer :)
btw its available again for pc:D
As he’s wearing a Star Wars shirt.😏
I think I had it for PC as well as Dreamcast, but actually it ran smoother on my Dreamcast (we couldn’t afford high end video accelerators (Graphics Card) for our PC back then).
I could have sworn it said Podracer on the disc, but I actually just went over and looked at my GD-Rom (my Dreamcast outlasted both of my Xboxes), and it says Racer.
The cable placement on the controllers was genius. Most people had their cables under the TV-table and this made it very natural once you put the controller on the table. The cable ran back and under the table forward towards the TV.
think i just ascended into higher dimension tryna comprehend what you wrote here
I don't know anyone that did this.

Andre Walker amazing games!
Jet Grind Radio, Samba De Amigo, Sonic Adv., Canon Spike, Code Veronica, Chu Chu Rocket, Project Justice, Seaman, PSO, Illbleed, Alien Front Online, Starlancer, SF Rush 2049...I could keep going, great system!
I'm so much in love with this channel. These guys are just so passionate and cool you can energize yourself just watching it.
Sonic Adventures and Ready 2 Rumble... Gotta recommend those
To everyone criticizing the cord being at the bottom...you've been doing it wrong.
Indeed true
learn new things everyday
But the cord never stayed in place. It was forever popping out of the notch. Still love the console though.
Man.. I remember my hundreds of hours in the 2 shenmue games and skies of arcadia. 3 games from my top 10.
Holy hell how can you not smile uncontrollably when you see a VMU
I can't wait to collect for dreamcast after I finish my n64 collection. Two of the best libraries of games of all time!
@@BarryRerack147 Seriously lol its library didn't hold a candle to the PS1.
I needed this video in my life! I don't know much about the Dreamcast but I've been curious so this was crazy helpful 😄
Erin Plays . . . Do you like cookies? :) 🍪🍪🍪
Erin Plays . . . aye baby
Brian Jensen there will be no coming back!
😂 how did I know John was going to be in this video. Excellent job dudes
I bought a Dreamcast recently from a friend and I appreciate this video bro.
Grandia 2 for Dreamcast changed my life! Immortal likes brawlers like I do. I really enjoyed zombie revenge and dynamite cop, really love your videos and your guests as well!
There going to release a high def remaster for Switch and PC>
Had to import Rez. One of my favorites.
Speaking of the Dreamcast being loud, I remember playing through D2 a couple times thinking my Dreamcast was going to explode lol
bro, I just love these buying guides, thanks.
I just got the Japan version from a garage sale for 6$ with 2 save cards, and a couple of games
So does anyone know if it can play usa games? There are a few usa and japan games here, is there a trick or something I need to burn?
Rainbow Dash code breaker will do it :)
I got mine free in 1999 after a brief seasonal job at Toys R Us. Let's just say a box fell off a truck lol.
Hah-hah! That's funny! I love short stories like this.
yeah nice so you got a Turd System for free that bit the dust against PS2 and Xbox... thats like if somebody donated you a Turd in the Mailbox...
I miss the Dreamcast so much...
Sucks to be you. I still have mine and it still works
Sturmwind is a great homebrew Shmup!
I recently bought my first Dreamcast and I would recommend buying the following items:
Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2 and Capcom -vs.- SNK as the first fighting games.
Blue stinger is a must for any collection
Dude, shenmue needs to be #1 on this list or at least on it. i really dont understand your guys tastes. Code veronica is #2 for me.
As far as arcade ports go dreamcast did it the best, but they mentioned very few.
robhova Agreed Jet art radio, Shenmue, Crazy taxi and of you like cart games wacky races is fun. There’s also a good Donald Duck game.
Chemist Knight I love MJR, but he does have a strange preference in games haha
ever hear the saying "à chacun son goût (“to each his own taste”)? Words like 'good' shouldn't apply (unless you're a video game snob)
Bought mine 9/9/99. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Still play it regularly. 20 years flew by.
Dreamcast/Sega just didn't have the library to compete.
the DC import library is pretty filled, just gotta read that damn kanji tho...
I don't have the system and can't read kanji. So, this is a bit irrelevant to me.
Man I miss the Dreamcast. One of my favorite systems 😍.
Used to game as kid and young adult. Never had a Dreamcast, but that is one retro console I would definitely consider starting a collection. Would be awesome if Sega released a state of the art console in 2021!
The best part of the VMU was being able to call your plays in NFL 2K and NCAA Football Series.
Hell yeah
Dreamcast since 2000
I recommend tony hawk pro skater 1 and 2
The house of the dead 2 ,crazy taxi , marvel vs capcom, street fighter alpha3, capcom vs snk. And king of fighters evolution
got mine in 1995 or so. close :D still works and still gets played often! Cant believe the life span of this console!
Recently bought one with my store credit along with Marvel vs Capcom 2. Best decision I've made.
Did you get a good deal?
How do you make a Dreamcast video without mentioning the arguably huge indie scene that still exists and brings out new games for the Dreamcast on a regular basis nowadays? :(
Let alone some of the games. :/
vergeofapathy I support them!
vergeofapathy Didn't knew that. Have you some examples for some indie games worth playing?
Sturmwind (shmup)
Neo XYZ (shmup) (there's a lot of indie shmups)
Wind&Water: Puzzle Battles (action puzzler, happens to be my favourite game of all time)
Sturmwind and Neo XYZ might be somewhat hard to find at the moment for a reasonable price. Wind&Water recently got a reprint and is pretty cheap at the moment.
Full disclaimer though, I'm somewhat invested with WInd&Water (working with the devs on some things for a steam re-release of the game. ;))
There's a fair amount of indie games that came out after the dreamcast "died" and there's still new games coming out this very year, just google search it, look at reviews and youtube footage etc.
I have never clicked on a video so fast in my life.
+The Icystorm 9 LOL!
The Icystorm 9
You should've seen my time when TLOU 2 trailer was released.
The O o
Phantasy star online was the precursor to my MMORPG addiction. It was my first experience with an MMORPG. I remember the first time hooking my dreamcast's 56k modem to the landline and logging into phantsy star online. My 11 year old mind was blown and that's all I did or played that summer. One of, if not my favorite and most memorable gaming experiences. I was then introduced to World of Warcraft.. 12 years of playing WoW later, I blame this awesome console and awesome game of phantasy online. Have just been chasing that dragon ever since, ha.
Toy Commander. One of the best games ever, can't believe it didn't make the list!
It does look nice and is fun, but I don't consider it a top 10 game for sure. I own it even. Some people love it though!
You forgot to mention that the Dreamcast in one of the very few retro consoles that still gets new games releases which is really great
Very few? Tons of systems have active homebrew scenes.
They do mention it at the end.
Power Stone 21:30 is one of my personal favorites for the Sega dreamcast 😁
Phantasy star online was hands down my favorite dreamcast game EVERRRR!!!!!
