Just read a great book about Jedediah Smith - Throne of Grace - by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin. Covers that area and names of men you mention.

I was told that Jackson Hole is sinking, and has been for thousands of years which is how the hole was created and hence the name. Is there any truth to this ?

Yes!!! The Teton Mountains are slowly rotating and rising while the valley drops as well. The combination is what makes the dramatic difference between the valley and the high peaks.
