    Grand Teton is a glorious place in the winter, the animals are more visible and the days are shorter. Commercial park tours are very popular but also expensive. Some wonder if it is possible to do a self-guided tour. Yes, it is possible and with a little research, this tour can be as productive and more enjoyable as a commercial tour. This video will cover some of the basics of a self-guided winter tour with recommendations for places to visit.

      Glad I could help! I did a book that might help a bit, 50 Wildlife Hotspots of Grand Teton, it should be available as paperback or kindle from Amazon, lots more info in the book. There are a couple more videos in my channel about the Tetons, they might be helpful also. I wish you best of luck

    Another brilliant ‘guided tour’ video. I wish I had seen these before my wife and I visited Jackson a few years ago. Your advice would have been invaluable. Extremely impressive images. Well done again Moose!

    To help others. Here is the morning drive in text.
    1. 12:19 - Jackson Town Square - Drive 21.1North on Hwy 89 to the Snake River Overlook, plan to arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. Foxes in the area.
    2. 12:59 - South to Gros Ventre Junction 13.9 miles, turn left onto Gros Ventre Road. The river will be on your right-hand side. Drive slowly looking for moose and coyotes. Continue past the closed camp ground to Kelly 7.3 miles. Turn right into the last driveway and look for mule deer near the houses. Some of the residents feed the deer.
    3. 14:00 - When you leave Kelly, turn right onto Gros Ventre road, watch for fox and coyote, after you pass Teton Ranch on your right you will see Kelly Warm Springs. There is a bathroom here. Continue over the hill watching for moose. At the bottom of the hill is a turn around which is a good spot to look for moose.
    4. 14:40 - Head back towards Kelly warm Springs. Turn right onto Antelope Flats Road. Watch in meadows for coyote, fox and grouse. Drive straight past Ditch Creek, look for porcupines near Ditch Creek. Can be found up in the Cottonwood Trees.
    5. 15:30 - Continue straight past Mormon Row (note this shouldn’t be possible). Watch for wolves. Drive to the park boundary and turn around at the parking area.
    6. 15:56- Head back towards Highway 89 looking for the same animals. At the intersection of Hwy 89 and Gros Ventre road go straight through and turn left a few blocks later at Spring Gulch Road past the golf course watching for moose and mule deer. Watch the Cottonwoods for Bald Eagles and Great Grey Owls.
    7. 16:33 - When you reach the Gros Ventre bridge turn around and back track to Gros Vente Junction and decide about lunch.

    Thanks for this video! It will go along good with your book that I just got. Planning tentatively to head toward Yellowstone in a few days. I read that more roads will open up on Friday, so I'm going that's true for Teton as well. Do you have any suggestions for stops along the way. I'm guessing you make the trip to and from MI a lot. I'm thinking badlands for sure on the way... maybe Theodore Roosevelt on the way home and go through U.P. I'm not very good at planning. Right now the 10 day forecast out there doesn't look great and I'll be car camping... so that may cause me to change plans altogether and go south. If I can only make up my mind. Lol

    Great video. What was the driving conditions in the winter you were there? Need to have the chains on tires?

    • @MooseHenderson1
      @MooseHenderson1  Год назад

      They take good care of the roads, all season or snow tires are advised but chains are not needed unless you plan to go over the pass into Idaho or east toward Dubois. Careful driving is needed, same as any area with significant snow.

      There is a video for summer self guided tour of grand Teton on my channel also. I also wrote a book you can get on Amazon that is much more detailed titled “50 Wildlife Hotspots in Grand Teton and Surrounding Communities” the book has suggestions for each month or block of similar months plus 50 detailed hotspots with directions, times, photo tips, etc

    whats yer opinion on lodging late november. trying to figure out where to stay taking into account seasonal road closures. plan to follow the itinerary you lay out in 50 Wildlife Hotspots (phenomenal book!), and can’t figure out if best to stay in Moose, Wilson, or downtown Jackson Hole??

    • @MooseHenderson1
      @MooseHenderson1  2 года назад +1

      What price range for hotels are you thinking. Prices in winter are much less but still expensive by standards in many other parts for the country and world. I would say your choices are Jackson or Teton Village. There are no hotels in Moose and Wilson is a bit of a drive in order to get to the park, however there are some nice homes for rent in Wilson and the sunrise (later in the day) gives you time to get into the park without needing to wake so early in the morning.
