Barbados intentionally scored an own goal to help them win by two thanks to a weird golden goal rule

  • Barbados needed to win by two, but they were only up one. So instead of scoring in the traditional way they intentionally kicked in an own goal to get to extra time. That way, they'd have a chance at a golden goal that for some reason was worth two goals instead of just the usual one. Grenada spent three minutes trying to score on either net to keep themselves from getting knocked out, and the mayhem is still worth talking about today.

    Here is why they made that rule: Golden Goal wasn't an official thing yet, so they wanted to test it in this Carribbean Cup. Usually in the group stages games can be tied but as they wanted to test the golden goal they decided that this time they wouldn't be tied but go into extra time as they would have more games in which the new golden goal could be tested. But why did count for two goals I hear you ask? Well, as was stated in the video goal difference matters. So they thought it would be unfair for teams who need a better goal difference to end the game when the golden goal is scored. So they decided that it would count double. And that's how we got here. Welcome to a moment in hist... no wait, wrong series.

    • @LuckyBird551
      @LuckyBird551 3 года назад +106

      Yeah, that's a thing that most people don't know about FIFA in general. When they come up with a new rule, they introduce it in a minor international tournament to test it out. If it works there they introduce it to major tournaments like the Men's World Cup or the UEFA European Championship, if it doesn't work, they remove it. Like, for example, in the 1993 U-17 World Cup FIFA introduced a rule that the throw in had to be done by kicking the ball instead of throwing it in with your hands like it was always been done. Nobody ended up liking what happened with that change so they dropped after that tournament was over.

    Just read up about this! Grenada only had the superior goal difference (of +2) because they themselves had beaten Puerto Rico "2-0" in the previous match because of a double-point golden goal!
    So, if you ignore any extra time period and ignore that every match required a winner (for some reason), and the fact that, therefore, Barbados wouldn't have scored the deliberate own goal, then the table would have looked like this;
    W D L GF GA GD Pts
    Puerto Rico 1 1 0 1 0 +1 4
    Barbados 1 0 1 2 2 0 3
    Grenada 0 1 1 1 2 -1 1
    Puerto Rico would have therefore gone through to the 'Final Tournament'
    It gets weirder though....
    In group 4, Dominica progressed, but only after beating Saint Kitts & Nevis using the same 2-point extra time malarky. If the game between them had finished a draw (as it was 2-2 at full time), then Saint Kitts & Nevis would have been ahead of Dominica on goal difference. However, (and to add to the weirdness) there was still one more game each in their group to be played, yet seemingly the game between Saint Kitts & Nevis never went ahead (?), whilst the game between Dominica and Monserrat was cancelled because of crowd trouble! So who knows how that would have actually panned out there!?
    In the 'Final Tournament' the absurd rules were seemingly abolished, and the organisers reverted to a '3 points for a win, 1 for a draw' system that was the standard practise before they got creative. In the 1st round of the 'Final Tournament' there were 2 groups of 4 teams made up of the 6 group 'winners', the hosts, Trinidad & Tobago, and the previous winners, Martinique, with the top 2 teams in each group progressing to the Semi Final.
    In a final piece of irony, the Final ended up being played between Martinique and Trinidad & Tobago, the only 2 teams not to have played in the madness of the Qualifying Tournament, which rendered the whole thing pointless in the first place!

    You guys will want to talk about the 1998 F1 British Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher was leading the race in the last laps, when he was given a 10-second stop&go penalty for lapping another driver despite yellow flags (or under the safety car, I can't remember), and, at that point of the race, serving his whole penalty would have meant for Schumacher to lose too much time and to end up behind title-contender Mika Hakkinen (his advantage was bigger than just 10 seconds, but you know, in the pit lane you're not allowed to drive faster than a certain speed).
    But in F1, you have to serve your penalty within three laps from being told to do so, so his team (Ferrari) called him in on the very last lap of the race. Schumacher did enter the pit lane to serve his penalty, but in doing so he crossed the finish line (which extends across the pit lane) before reaching his pit box and won the race without having served his penalty.
    There were no rules forbidding this smart move (and no time for Schumacher to serve his penalty earlier due to a late communication by the race directors), so McLaren's (Hakkinen's team) appeal ended up being useless.
    Definitely the story of a weird rule!
    I guess online you can find more even information about that episode :)

      Jeff Burton did a very similar thing in the 2002 NASCAR All-Star Race as well. The All-Star event is an exhibition mainly done for fun and experimentation, so the rules are changed every year. In this particular year, there was a rule that every team had to pit before the end of the first segment of the race. A set of drivers were eliminated at the end of each segment, so you needed to finish above a certain position to advance. So everyone on the lead lap had already pitted before the last lap of the first segment...except Jeff Burton. Since he stayed out on the track while everyone pitted, he had accumulated a 26 second lead. It typically takes around 27 seconds to complete a lap at Charlotte Motor Speedway (the track where the All-Star Race is held) in a NASCAR Cup car. He and his team had realized that their assigned pit stall was before the start finish line but very close to it, so they pitted the car on the final lap since they only needed to basically leave the pit stall to touch the line. Burton did lose the lead from having to slow down to pit lane speed, which was expected, but he didn't lose enough positions to be eliminated.

    A similar dynamic happened in baseball, in the National League in 1965 (I think), in a game between STL and the MIL Braves. STL took a big lead early. Then a towering, ferocious storm approached in the 4th inning. The Braves, when they were on defense, tried to keep the game going by NOT putting batters or runners out. The let ground balls go thru their legs. They let fly balls drop. The Cardinals hitters took a few minutes to realize what the Braves were doing. When they did, they decided to not stop at bases, but to keep running around the bases, trying to get tagged out. As you might guess, it made a laughing stock of the game. It came down to one more out. One more out and the game would be an official game Finally, 3rd baseman Eddie Mathews of the Braves said, apparently, "Screw this mockery," and tagged the Cardinal runner out. The Braves then came to bat in their half of the 5th, and the Cardinals got them out, making it enough to be an official game. If not, the game would have to be replayed from the beginning, with the score reverting to 0-0. That was the reason the Braves tried this, to not let the game become an official complete game.
    The irony was that the rainstorm never happened at the stadium. It passed them by. They played the whole game. STL won handily. The strategem was clever, but it failed. But it was sure a DIFFERENT sort of game.
    I was in the hospital and was listening to all of this, with THREE future Hall of Fame announcers describing this mayhem - Harry Carey, Joe Garagiola, and Jack Buck.

In the final game of the group stage, an Indonesian player scored a deliberate own goal to give Thailand a 3-2 win. The winner would face tournament hosts Vietnam in the next round and the loser would play Singapore, looked upon as the easier team to beat. The plan backfired as Indonesia lost to Singapore and Thailand lost to Vietnam. FIFA fined both teams $40,000, and the Indonesian player who scored the own goal was banned from the national team for life.

    Granada's goalie could've just picked up the ball and walked into his goal. Would take some serious skill to stop him from getting near to the goal or for it to go out for a goal kick.

Palace vs Brighton, Zaha carrying Palace on what was supposed to be his last few games, Glenn Murray's injury, Kevin Phillips scoring the winner in the final, and that every team is now in the Premier League there is so much to talk about.

    5:02 according to Wikipedia, Grenada also benefitted from the golden goal rule against Puerto Rico. If that rule hadn't been in place Barbados would have only needed to win by one goal.

  • @IvanNOFX
    @IvanNOFX 5 лет назад +93

    Not only was the golden goal worth two points, but there wasn't an option to draw the match. With such rules, in a group of three teams, a deadlock of all three teams having three points by the end is very likely. Meaning the only way of determining the winner of the group would be the goal difference. How someone hasn't thought that the goal worth two goals would be the problem is baffling.

      After that they use who scores the most goals overall.
      Then if it's still a tie, they use who got the least amount of cards (red & yellow cards).
      If there is still a tie, then they use who committed the least amount of fouls overall.
      In my 30 years of watching football. I have never seen it come as far as who got the least cards.

    Actually the Golden-Goal-Rule was only introduced to soccer in the mid-nineties. The UEFA-Euro 1996 was the first senior tournament to use it, with its final being decided by a Golden Goal by Oliver Bierhoff. Before that they used it in smaller tournaments in order to check out what impact that rule would have towards the game. And that is what happened at the 1994 Caribbean Cup. To gain more examples they also sent group-stage-matches to overtime. And since without Golden Goal it would be possible to score more than once in overtime, they decided a Golden Goal should be worth two goals in terms of goal differential.
    But that did not conflict with the later regularly introduced Golden-Goal-rule, because that would only be used in knockout-stage-matches, where there is no goal differential.

  • @avataraarow
    @avataraarow 2 года назад +28

    I think the funniest thing about this rule is that this is technically still a viable strategy in any non-Golden goal scenario. If you’re playing in a tourney where extra time isn’t golden goal and you need to win by two to advance, scoring on yourself to give yourself 30 extra minutes to score two goals is 100% viable as a tactic if you only have say a minute or two left, stupid as that may seem

    • @shortcat

      i'd say few seconds, not a minute, but true. weird it isn't a practice, i guess the stupid way of "respecting the spirit of the game" is to blame.

    • @mohammedtanjaoui4198
      @mohammedtanjaoui4198 Год назад +8

      This doesn’t happen, because usually when goal difference is accounted for in a group stage where a tie is also an option, so no need to go to an extra time. Extra time is only needed in knock off stages. I am really not sure why they needed to extra time in this tourney.

    • @yoloswaggins7121
      @yoloswaggins7121 10 месяцев назад +1

      No this can't happened. Extra time only happens in knockout rounds. In a normal game a tie would just earn each team 1 point.
      In this particular tournament they made it so that a tie would go to extra time because they wanted as many extra times as possible to test this stupid golden goal rule

    • @PalaceDude
      @PalaceDude 7 месяцев назад

      There is literally not one case of a game that can go to extra time on a tie, but would end at "1-0" and not mean the winning team has gone through to the next stage.

    OMG how many questions can you ask these geniuses…
    1 - Why could the BAR - GRE match reach extra time if PUERTO RICO was also participating??
    2 - Why could the BAR - GRE match reach extra time if the championship had a LEAGUE format?
    3 - When Barbados were 2 - 1, they were one goal away from making the final… what final??? This was a league between 3 teams, score the most points & goals and you get to be champion, that should be the rule.
    4 - When Barbados were 2 - 1, they were one goal away from creating the +2 goal difference they needed. But then they wanted the extra time, the golden goal. So they wanted to be in a DIFFERENT position… where they would be ONE GOAL AWAY FROM CREATING THE DIFFERENCE THEY NEEDED!! They were already in that situation!
    5 - the 11 players wanting to score in either net and 11 players defending both nets makes the offside rule collapse in such a BEAUTIFUL way. The now-all-defending team can’t touch the ball when it’s nearing the goal they were previously attacking, unless they defend always being behind the second-to-last allattacking team. Also, what should the allattacking goalie do? Try to “save” attempts or join the army?
    6 - You said the Granada coach protested against this… What about THE WHOLE OF PUERTO RICO??? They got sooo ripped off.
    Such interesting content m8s. This video blew my mind. There should be leagues with alldefending and allattacking teams… and the offside rule. Especially in central America hahahaha

    Hey guys I would just like to point out that the "weird rule" wasn't the "2 goals for 1" rule.
    Have you guys noticed that they played extra time despite being in the qualifiers? Exactly. The problem here was the "each game must have a winner" rule.
    If it weren't for this rule, this situation wouldn't have occurred, because Barbados would HAVE to have won by 2 goals in 90 minutes; as there was no extra time regardless of result. If this was a bracket tournament match and the golden goal was used as a tie-breaking measure, it wouldn't have mattered how much the golden goal was worth.

      Agreed. Mind, both rules were totally stupid. As for the match, in the last 3 minutes Grenada didn't have to score a conventional goal with an outfield player; all they had to do was get the ball into their own penalty area and into their keeper's hands. That would just about guarantee the required own goal. The last 3 minutes of the match is impossible to find, so my guess is that Grenada didn't actually suss out Barbados's plan at all. This video and all the chat is about what 'could' have happened rather than what actually did.
