    We are looking at commander cards that used to be good, cards from the earlier days of commander, we're talking 2010-2015, before wizards was producing all this directly for commander product. These cards have fallen out of favor and aren't as good as newer options, but they used to be close to auto-includes! Hope you enjoy our trip down memory lane!

    The fact that harmonize exists is what pisses me off.
    If green can get targeted removal out the ass and unconditional card draw, why can't white get some too?
    Why do we have to play mentor of the meek, a garbage card, just to get some card draw.
    Green's two biggest weaknesses, lack of removal and card draw, have been removed entirely, so why does white still get punished?

    • @aquanecromancer5776
      @aquanecromancer5776 3 года назад +10

      Harmonize was specifically printed as a colorshifted version of Concentrate for the Planar Chaos set. At this point, green has crazy good card draw tied to creatures, but Harmonize is unconditional because it was a blue card literally just made green as part of the set's big gimmick.

    I started playing EDH around 2013 and I remember there being so many good stuff decks around that time, playing all the haymakers mentioned in this video. Every deck seemed to play the same wincons and answers. It felt like such a daunting format to get into, because nobody ever had any of these cards for trade. Nowadays decks feel much more diverse and as a consequence it's much easier to trade cards for EDH.

  • @masonbaker1677
    @masonbaker1677 3 года назад +40

    Gotta disagree specifically on Krosan Grip, Split Second allows Krosan Grip to work much better on artifacts and enchantments with activated abilities, so that they can't activate them in response to the removal. It's not what it used to be, but I think it certainly still has a place in EDH! With that said, great video. Keep it up!

      @@HomeCookinMTG I think the argument is the power level of your play group. Krosan is an auto include in metas that run food chain, winter orb, (that one red theros enchament that combos off the graveyard). These cards tend to just combo too easily and without krosan you usually get countered out. In middle to lower end casual games where these cards and combos are too expensive to see krosan ends up being too expensive or overkill.

  • @TeaRanosaur

    I think people undervalue harmonize. Its true that green has a lot of cards that just draw more, but if I'm not also in blue I want that harmonize in there because its protection from being blown out. If I'm low on cards and get wrathed harmonize doesn't ask me to have a big creature or a big board, it just gets me back into the game. Just run it and a bunch of the other options, its not like your deck is going to suffer from too much card draw.

I moved on with my life. I use the card in a 45 land Tatyova deck, where it's one of the combo pieces that make up almost the entire deck, it's almost all combo or tutor.

    I think Arcanis is still a niche card in the right deck. Besides Wizard tribal, he's good to discard in Mairsil the Pretender, then exile him with Mairsil for 4 mana. And since you should be playing ways to give Mairsil haste, you should be able to tap to draw 3 right away. I play Akroma's Memorial in my Rienne deck because the green helps to ramp into it, it gives all of my creatures pro-red in addition to haste since I play Chain Reaction and Blasphemous Act. But it also helps me with the creatures that I recast after getting them back after one of my many board wipes. Baloths + Avenger are still good for landfall decks, but that's about it.

    Also, Steel Hellkite? It's a generic mana sinking 5/5 for 6 with flying that can scale in damage and can pick apart someone's board. I don't know of any other creature that comes close to replacing that kind of role. At the very least it's solid in creature-based decks that don't have access to removal.

    Would like to preface with, I love the content and really agree with the deck building ideas.
    It's interesting that creatures are valued over enchantments and artifacts for the same effects (which I agree with). I just have to go the opposite direction so many times because my pod is pretty board wipe happy 😂 maybe I should build some graveyard shenanigan or flicker decks... As it is now, enchantments and artifacts mostly stay on the battlefield, but creatures go away within a round or two.

    I still run Steel Hellkite. But it's usually in a deck that could possibly easily afford to cast it OR a deck where you could cheat it out. It is really good in my Karn, Silver Golem deck, where I can possibly cast it on the end step before my turn due to Shimmer Myr or Vedalken Orrerry.

    I think the morale of the story is less that those cards got bad but more that the decks had to get more synergetic. Wormcoil or Myr Battlesphere e.g. is still totally playable if you pay 0 mana thanks to, say Saheeli. Coincidentally, decks that cheat mana cost by one way or another (reanimator, artifacts, things involving Ashnod's altar) have become my favourites as they still allow me to play some of those splashy spells mentioned

      That's what happens when cards are being printed specifically for this format. I liked the format because there were no cards specifically for it; that way you ran into interesting and underplayed cards that didn't really make it in standard or extended. Even though there are many more cards now than there were back then, it seems the decks have become increasingly homogenized and boring.

    When you use the ''Pokedex'' bestiary with Guardian project, Soul of the Harvest, Beast Whisperer in the same deck: IT LIKES TO DRAWS ALL THE CARDS
    Is it OK to typically hate Sorceries?
    Sad Robot gets sadder :(
    LOL My buddy loved Praetor counsel till I wheeled their massive hand and milled them out
    Arcanis: Agreed never liked that card.
    Doubling Season: My Ghave deck says hello.
    Praetor Grasp is a great card for control, check their deck pull out something crazy for later BUT your are right I have stolen many Sol Rings with this card LMAO
    Birthing Pod vs the new Pyre of Heroes?
    Great choices, I think most of these cards fall in the over hyped EDH card staples category. I also think that these cards are less threatening now a days due to power creep, which can allow a player to slide under the radar and not be the focus of other players immediate ire using them, ex: using Awakening Zone instead of Bitter Blossom: People don't like 1/1 fliers to 0/1 mana sac dorks and leave you alone #PlayerPsychology :P

    • @trumpetperson11
      @trumpetperson11 3 года назад +2

      How often are people playing win cons that involve artifacts and enchantments, that you couldn't just interrupt with natures claim? I'd assume that you are talking about two card combos, and so you can just destroy it in response to them playing the other combo piece?
      If you are saying that they play a creature first and then play their artifact/enchantment win con, well creature removal is even more common in edh.
      PS. This is exactly what they were talking about referring to confirmation bias. 1 out of 10 times it might do something like that and feel really good. Which in your mind will make up for the fact that the other 9/10 times it was a worse natures claim. You will forget the times when the game slowly spiraled away because your artifact removal was too expensive to play, since its a small detail with often unseen consequences. Or you will play the expensive removal and be unable to play the creature you wanted that turn as well, also a small detail that might be missed. But you will see when you don't lose the game once, and that one time will be enough to make you completely forget the bad times.

      @@trumpetperson11 i play natures claim, natural state, abrupt decay and and vandalblast too (i play in a very stax heavy meta) but if their is a an artifact you dont want them activating, krosan grip is king. in a range of power levels, it stops food chain, vadalken orrery, tormods cript, phyrexian altar, alter of dementia, sensais divining top and oblivion stone. not to mention the fact it cant be countered also makes it great for key threats like natures will, rhystic study, sword of feast and famine, mystic remora, lightning greaves, sylvan library, druids repository, carpet of flowers, jeweled lotus, skull clamp, stony silence, torpor orb tons of other stax cards that they would normally counter. the thing is 9 times out of 10 artifacts and enchantments are the best cards in the deck

      @@moxopal675 You can't stop someone from activating a card on their turn unless they inexplicably pass on priority... That's not what krosan grip does. Krosan grip's main power comes from being uncounterable.

      @@alslayer18 if you are referring to tormods cript and oblivion stone that I used for example. Usually the best thing you can do with them is not use them automatically but hold them over people's heads. With the alter cards, to win, you need to pass priority unless the field is super stacked. Same does with food chain. That being said I knew About holding priority but I should have made that more clear in my examples

      @alslayer18 3 года назад +1

      @@moxopal675 Kind of? I just meant that many of your examples were of cards that your opponents will activate immediately, but will need to wait for it to resolve, before trying to activate it again. You could just as easily use nature's claim or any of the other cheaper destroy artifact/enchantment spells. The corner cases where you could justify krosan grip over cheaper cards would be more for other things you mentioned like tormod's crypt or oblivion stone, sure. The more sweeping answer to point to would be to just note that its uncounterable though.

    I still play plenty of these, but it's because I choose to power down my decks and up the fun factor. I agree with many of the comments that EDH was probably more fun when WOTC wasn't supporting it (wasn't playing MTG much those years). The cycle of City of Guilds/GP/DN two-color legends for example are so fun (Tibor and Lumia, Ulasht, etc.) As for Necro, we older players lost so many times to it, got so tired of reading about it taking down tournaments that some probably assumed it was banned in every format ever. Again, just looking for more varried and fun versions - though I'll agree that even Greed and Arena are starting to feel boring. Overall, though I liked the video. Too much content tells you which cards you "must play" without any idea as to what should be cut. When I first switched from 60-card the deck size seemed massive. Now I never have enough slots for all the jank I want to include!
