Looking to get the most out of your commander manabase? We have a complete guide to tapped lands for both budget and tuned commander decks, which will help you figure out which tapped lands to play, how many tapped lands to play, and even which tapped lands we generally avoid for edh. Usually tapped lands are frowned upon for edh manabases, but some of them are worth it and can even be some of the best lands in commander!

Path of ancestry is just the best tapped 5-color-land. Even if it only scrys for your commander it is often worth it.
It’s a really good card! Sometimes people miss that their commander shares a type with itself lol
In my 5 color dragons and slivers for sure. ;)
Path of Ancestry works really well in my Edgar Markov deck. So much value
Super good in tribal
Heck I have it in Mono-Green Bears
This is one of your best videos, should be revisited in a shorts to tell people the dual snowlands from Kaldheim are great budget options for Farseeks, Three Visits, Krosan Verges and the like.
My favorite thing to do with Creeping Tarpit is equipping Sword of Feast and Famine.
My play group started doing it after they saw me do it the first time.
That’s a really cool synergy!
@@NitpickingNerds Speaking of the creaturelands, they're amazing in Simic Ezuri for the same reason you say they're good in Yuriko: the deck needs a creature to load with +1/+1 counters and they're immune to sorcery speed bosrdwipes. Plus when they stop being a creature, they keep the counters on there, ready for the next time you turn it into a creature!
@@andrewsparkes8829 The hexproof manland is real good in Ezuri.
I've been trying to hype up the lotus lands and scourched ruins in my playgroups because of the white support that is coming out this year.
The trope for white is having fewer lands than an opponent, and those three lands, plus kuroo and bounce lands, enable the card advantage from verge rangers and keeper of the accord, oath of lieges, etc. Lotus vale and scourched ruins are reserved list btw.
If white gets better or more popular, then those lands will be part of the structure to enable the land management/advantage white provides in its color identity.
Hey I like that idea, I might add lotus field to the deck for those sweet white cards
@@NitpickingNerds also flagstones of trokair for extra value
Nice one. That four mana 3/4 just spoiled today looks sweet for white
@@NitpickingNerds I really like the red one on 6 cmc. Goad your opponents creature for a landfall is sweet. All landfall creatures are better played off curve to get the first landfall trigger, kind of weird to leave a mana on the table or play them before their value and hope they make the turn cycle.
@@NitpickingNerds land tax, walking atlas, scareteller, good land ramp combo for white, eldrazi displacer, conjurer's closet, boreas charger, solemn simulacrum, kor cartographer, myriad landscape, sol ring, burnished hart, wayfarer's bauble, cartographer's hawk, explorer's scope, isolated watchtower, knight of the white orchid, oath of the lieges, oblivion sower, pendant of prosperity, sun titan and fetch lands
I am very happy to have found your channel. I came across a video about 2 weeks ago and have since watched about 10 videos. Great information, well researched and on topics that I haven't seen covered on any other channel. Also well produced with a comfort of the hosts that feels very natural and....COMEDY!
There’s been so much commander content lately but we’re happy to be able to cover things that don’t often get talked about! Really appreciate the comment Alex, feedback like this helps us get better!
I like playing a temple just for a free scry in my orzhov deck. Has come in handy quite a few times.
One temple isn’t bad in a two color deck 😎
I run halimar depths in my melek, izzet paragon budget deck, because it cares about the top card of the library. I also run evolving wilds and terramorphic expanse even though they're usually worse than guildgates in two color decks, because they can shuffle my library, giving me another chance at an instant or sorcery on top
I put 10 guild gates and mazes end in my sliver deck to have a second built in wincon because slivers attract so much hate
Great list, thank you! Lots of cards I need to consider now.
Tapped Lands are a pretty deep concept and I feel like we could potentially go even deeper but at a certain point it stops being entertaining lol. What are your fav tapped lands?
Lotus petal into rupture spire has got me creased 🤣🤣you've got my sub now well done 🤣🤣
I imagine that the fast and short answer is "preferably none". Still, i can imagine one or two usefull taplands. Hope to see you recomendations!!! Really like your content!!!
That is the fast and short but you can’t always play none
Please, PLEASE make a trade binder deck video!
It sounds wonderful!
Maybe like "How to build a trade binder commander deck"?
I got the second half of the sanguine bond/exquisite blood combo under my windbrisk heights once. Felt great swinging with a couple lifelink creatures and activating in response to declarations of blockers. The tongue bite poker face was a struggle
I wouldn't have been able to resist the "welp this one is over guys" talk from the very beginning
As a budget player ravnica bounce lands are pretty good, as they don’t delay you too much, also mercadian masques taplands are amazing with them. Also bonus points to MM lands in a budget proliferate deck.
Yeah it depends on the deck, we prefer a little synergy before we put them in but it doesn't take much
Lotus Field works really well in my Lord Windgrace deck - as well as Field of the Dead. Able to bring my sacrificed lands back, and pump out a good number of 2/2 zombies.
Because of "enters tapped", for some of my decks I'm a HUGE fan of Amulet of Vigor.
Bojuka Bog is one of the only tapped lands (especially single color) I have in my deck. It's really good.
Great stuff guys keep up the great work
TY Pawz
I love Halimar! Saved me quite a few times
Windbrisk Heights is awesome in my Orzhov tokens. I love it. One of my favorite utility lands.
Saving this for later, good topic.
We think so too, thanks! Also, love your username
What are your thoughts on the flip cards from Zendikar rising that can either come in as a tapped land or a spell?
Trilands and the Thriving lands are great in 5 color budget! Great episode. I would totally play Halimar in Yurioko though.
Agree. I still play Halimar in my Rashmi deck. Secured me plenty "free" spells.
Thanks for the kind words! Just don’t tell joe about halimar depths 😂
I use the thriving lands. They help TREMENDOUSLY. I play 5 color Slivers a.k.a. Arch Enemy lol
Corey Smith same! In my Golos and Kenny. Just built Jodah for a friend and used them in it too.
@@MTG_Ronin being able to choose what the 2nd land is helpful to me because i have quite a few slivers that have double mana symbols in their casting cost. And I try to have them out very quickly because their effect is wonderful, especially pulmanic and telekinetic. So having access to that early I can use my overlord to tutor
I love Krosan Verge in Abzan, can grab Murmuring Bosk and Indatha Triome
Another fun thing to do with lotus is that it can count as ramp if you have a way of countering an ability, which you use on its ability that makes you sacrifice the lands.
Two thoughts: I've been loving playing man-lands in Winota for a similar reason to Yuriko, they're great when you don't have a whole lot else, but I mostly play the untapped colorless ones (Needle spires is in there though).
Second, how do y'all feel about the Zendikar modal DFCs? A lot of them have a ton of utility, and I'm gonna love having them in my land slots.
Ohhh we are doing a video about some of those soon, we have a lot to say
I wonder if Icatian Store and the others in that cycle might be worth considering since they can accumulate counters if you simply leave them tapped.
So I found mistveil plains and emeria the sky ruin for my boros deck. Mistveil helps to always have good stuff in your library,it becomes even better with the same type land but in red which just shuffles your library. The sky ruin is a very helpful white land that cen return target creature from your graveyard to the battlefield
I've been subscribed, but no one has tapped me yet.......
It's only a matter of time!
*taps Fernando* hah!
@@helmhamerhand733 ☺️😊
cool combo for mono white. brought back + lotus field for some decent ramp. granted its a 2 card combo for 2 extra lands, but itll definitely make people wanna read your card.
Hot take, but halimar depths is kinda cool in my patron of the moon deck, because i can loop its ability over and over again
Raging Ravine i feel is the best dual land/creature hybrid, as with infinite mana it could just outright kill someone
I WANT to see this trade binder deck discussion video. Do it up boys!!!
J.B. Coghlan oh man a couple people have asked now
@@NitpickingNerds great news! When y'all brought it up I couldn't help but wonder if I'm playing trade binder decks? Needs to know moar!!
Have only 2 non basics in my angry omnath decks because it has like 30 ramp spells in it to fetch all those basics, but I run all 10 trilands and all 5 jump start lands in my sisay, weatherlight captain deck to power down the deck with my lower power group
I play raging ravine in my Xenagos deck mostly just as a desperation piece on the off chance I dont have a creature for some reason.
Make a creature to pump and swing or sac it to greater good to refuel. I like it a lot.
Do you play Treetop Village too? That one seems a lot better, but both seem like spicy tech for a creature when you're in need
Myriad Landscape is basically Wayfarer's Bauble. ETB tapped is largely equivalent to one to cast, and both activate for two mana to put you up +1 basic of your choice.
It's better in some ways and worse in others, but none of the differences are major, imo.
We never really thought of it that way but it's true! I think we still like myriad landscape better if we had to choose
great topic.
Thanks! We liked filming this one
have totally hit a emrakul off mosswort bridge before never felt so good
Lonely sandbar is just so flavourful in my pirate deck.
Was hoping to get your opinions on the Vivid lands (Vivid Creek, Vivid Crag, etc). Been running them in a 5-color for a while now and haven't had any issues. Generally by the time I'm out of counters I already have access to the colors I need.
Halimar in mono blue is like a super scry, dig 3 deep.. gives me a land if I need it or a spell if I need that 🤷🏻♂️
Halimar Depths for ever. It's good, play it.
Had tons of fun in the Valakut, Prime Time, Vengevine days.
Most of my EDH decks are trade binder decks :) I always throw in old or fun cards into each deck. Example, Tempting Licid in my Glissa the Traitor deck or Island of Wak Wak into...something.
if your in green, use stone-seeder hierophant. i have a fairly competative 4 color omnath deck and it makes my tapped fetch lands better than the pricy ones
Mistveil, sunforger and orims chant or chance for glory can lock one player or go infinite
Any sunforger cards are cool in our book
Man lands are good with fringe synergies with animate land synergies like Noyan Dar and the new Naya landfall commander. But even there, you’d mostly rather have an indestructible land. The only deck I have that still runs manlands is an Izzet deck I made that needed more duals on a budget.
Just a note call the cycle lands unicycle for 1 bicycle for 2 and tricycle lands for 3
What would 4 mana cyclers be?
@@NitpickingNerdsa car
Car lands lol nice
What do you guys think of the new spell/land double cards? I like the idea on paper, but I didn't see that many interesting EDH focus cards.
clanechelon watch Friday to find out
@@NitpickingNerds Aww... This feels like a 90s tv show cliffhanger :P
clanechelon it is our next video lol
I think some of them are great. Valakut Awakening can be awesome when you end up with cards in hand that aren’t useful at the time.
With proper rationing tapped lands can be really helpful in mana fixing. Though I reccomend considering them 3 colors or more.
what are your favorite tapped lands?
@@NitpickingNerds I'd say the Slow Fetches because I can't afford the good ones. 😥
they're still pretty good!
Just have to also say I have an omnath rage deck and try to never dry out the well so to speak (sac lands, play them from the yard, shuffle the yard to the library etc.) + I run sac outlets bc cyclonic rift feels less bad when you can severely punish the player for casting it.
I bet your buddy was raging after you resolved that rift tho ;)
The main upsides of gate lands are they can be searched and the key components of maze's end. So I would rather pick them over lands like Tranquil Expanse.
I have Tradebinder decks and a foil rupture spire . What to do trade for a lotus petal?
Sometimes I’ll run Guild Gates just for targets for Circuitous Route
I vedalken orrery worth it though? .... I had it in decks then took it out... I am only finally reincluding it in aragorn the United just for the green ramp creatures as combat tricks
Boseiju Who Shelters All. Makes 1 colorless Mana, you take 2 damage and if you spend it on an instant or sorcery the spell is uncounterable. Incredible land.
Scorched ruins plus deserted temple plus rings is a nice infinite mana combo
I feel like the creature lands are appealing. I have run the Hissing Quagmire, Lavaclaw Reaches, and the Green one in two of my most played decks. I think I have activated it once or twice out of hundreds of games.
I wonder what percentage that amounts to, maybe 1% haha. I like treetop village in Ghalta where it sort of taps for 2
@@NitpickingNerds i think the azorious one might be a bit better bc its i think a 5/4 flyer but that one is also far more expensive compared to the rest of them
I think the azorius one is one of the worst ones, it doesn’t provide any opportunities for synergy other than by having flying
You can choose to not pay the one on rupture spire type lands for sac triggers Titania, Gitrog, Korvold, ect all like them.
That seems alright if you’re on a budget
Halimar Depths is good in budget melek Izzet paragon decks where top deck manipulation GIVES you card advantage.
But as everyone says, there is always a case where it’s useful
Grand Coliseum is also very good. I don’t know why that card gets no respect. It should be considered in any deck that is three or more colors. Mostly it will tap for colorless mana. However, it has the Mana Confluence ability to tap for any color. It’s the perfect safety net for tricolored decks or higher. It’s also great with Reflecting Pool.
We agree with you there! Grand Coliseum might be one we just missed when making our budget list. I would jam it in 3+ color budget builds
Most play groups avoid dedicated land destruction anyway, so Sorched Ruins would actually be pretty safe in them.
That being said, nothing is stopping players using permanent removal on your lands, and your essentially paying 3 mana to play Sorched Ruins over a basic thanks to the untapped requirement.
Really the point I'm making is that playing 3 to ramp 1 is awful anyway.
Than being Lotus Field seems pretty good in white, as you can sacrifice your own lands, and abuse the rubber banding Ramp white has, by just reducing your total lands. Something like Scholarship Sponsor after Lotus Field is pretty good.
looking at my tradebinder deck, eyeing the ruptured spire.. I feel called out
I'd say Path is one of the best tapped lands in the game. I throw it in any three colour deck on the basis that its strictly better than any of the tri-lands.
Hi guys love ur vids
Alex love you too
I'm gonna try to lotus petal gateway plza for the fun of it
I politely disagree about the blue rearrange in yuriko... I get your point for picking an example that might use it, but I think it is worth it...
Bounceland draws you a card, makes your land count lower, your openings hands better and fixes your mana (tapping for both colours is so much better than tapping for one)
They even have sinergy with some decks
There are some downsides, like in commander early often they result in a discarded card cause they draw you a card or if there is targeted land destruction/some good cards that can also target lands of course they are the first target of those
If in your meta cards like Venser or ghost quartier are not so heavily presents, that's an autoinclude
Ok, last comment. When I try to evaluate my land base, 3 color decks, I want to see what turn I produce all three colors. Not just command tower, I mean three lands three colors available.
Then what turn I can cast double pip of each color. If in a 3 color deck, on turn 6 I have the ability to cast double pip of each color, I think I've found a good balance.
Sounds like a good rule of thumb!
Ruptured spire is basically arcane signet on a land
Forbidding watchtower is ok in Doran the seige tower
Halimar depths and yuriko seem like a good match
I really like your content but... green- aligned guildgates are fine because there are some cheap tutors for them. Gatecreeper vine comes to mind. However, I would just play 1-2 of them per deck... also, what about Khalni garden?
But why run the guild gates in a color that has the easiest access to all basics?
I mean this is the color with rampant growth, nature's lore, three wishes, farseek, and a bunch more find land card
Turn 1 - Elven Spirit Guide, Rupture Spire, hah gotcha!
Scorched ruins works great in Bosh decks
Todd Hall ewwwww
HOW DARE YOU DISGRACE HALIMAR DEPTHS!!!!!
NAMELESS and we would do it again!
I play. it in my Thassa, God of the sea who has scry 1 every turn. I get to choose which of the three to get rid which is not nothing!
There's almost no other tapped lands and it rarely disrupts the curve so the cost is small but I think it's still a dubious include.
Is anyone setting up miracles or other top of library shenanigans with this?
Chancellor of the tangle reveal, transguild promenade
Turn one transguild lol
BAH GAWD
how many lands do you typically run in an average commander deck
We usually run about 34
@@NitpickingNerds damn I usually run way more, I should probably reconsider that ...
could you go more in depth on your landcount decision?
Honestly it could be a whole video, and we might do one on land count in the future. The main idea is that we lower the average cmc of our decks so that we get to play more spells than most other decks
completely depends on the deck anywhere from 30 in my anje and jhoira decks, to i think 45 in my tatyova deck. i generally average out about 33-34 same as them. ultimately though really depends on the deck and what it's doing.
Off the top of my head my child of alara deck has 12 tapped, all guildgates and mazes end
Play Mana Crypt + Rupture Spire = Gotchya !!!
Cephalid Coliseum :D
That card is sweet because it doesn't even enter tapped
Where is your spawning pool nothing like pay 2 turn Into a 1/1 regenerate to block
Don’t like tapped lands? Amulet of vigor! Your welcome!
My starting point on lands is 38. And I still get screwed. Krosan verge is amazing, color fixing and ramp.
Scorched Ruins is also $20. Ouch
Lotus field is $5
Mistveil plains and sunforger is amazing!!
Hamlimar Depths is card selection at least. Not perfect but it can be useful.
Our decks usually start at 34 lands, I think we tend to make decks with a low average cmc
Nitpicking Nerds I just have bad luck that way. Even my Najeela deck has 38 lands and it’s highest cmc is 4. Any less and I end up color or mana screwed.
But that budget golos gates deck with mazes end. Haha
Golos is all about the mazes end 😂
What is the downside of guildgates?
There's an opportunity cost of you giving up better tapped duals if you don't have them, and at a certain point a lot of tapped lands does slow your deck down. We just think they are pretty low on the totem pole at this point
@@NitpickingNerds TKS for the answer
You guys forgot about the Dominaria tapped lands
amulet of vigor
That would ruin this whole video! lol
There's an artifact creature allows you to play lands from the graveyard
I like vivids
Especially with Sen triplets
156
my decks only ever run 3 lands
Narset man lands are her army
I’ve taken Myriad Landscape out of all my decks. I just hate how it plays. Comes into play tapped, then taps for colourless, then you need to pay TWO and it to sacc it to ramp ONE land, that on top of it all enters tapped. It sux imo. Play it turn one = no spell. Turn two = no colour, but maybe one spell. Turn three = do nothing and ramp one land. For me, more often than not, it ended up never getting cracked because I’d rather play something to further my gameplan early on. In a grindy meta I suppose it’s ok, but I’d rather play out a rock I can tap for mana right away.
Just buy proxy lands 😊
Wait, people play edh to win? I thought it was played to either have fun or make others SUFFER.
Honestly my better decks hardly have any tap lands in them. And even in budget brews i prefer basics to tap lands
Answer: Amulet of Vigor.
I run 37 to 40 land
We usually go between 33-35
@@NitpickingNerds I use to do that, but kept getting early mana screwed
Kurt Angle reference, always +1
Kurt is the best
He’ll make your ankle hurt
thriving land can fix a tri color deck! with a commander tower. Sry land is good in 2 colors decks.
We agree! Thriving lands might make 4-5 color budget decks more viable as well
I run helimar depts in my aminatou deck. Runs amazing and helps manipulate the top of my deck. I wanna play you two in a game because your opinions on things most of the time are major cringe.
I may cut mine to no more than 10 tapped
And I feel like 2 is too much for my build lol (esper)
