The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of The Carnivore Diet: What I've Learned as a Doctor (12m+) - Ep 74

  • After adopting a strict Carnivore Diet, I've seen some incredible health improvements with patients including resolving gut issues, clearing skin problems, and reducing diabetes medications. Eating just meat has helped many reduce joint pain and enabled me to de-prescribe unnecessary medications.
However, there are downsides. Some struggle with chronic diarrhoea on the Carnivore Diet and don't experience expected weight loss or energy boosts like everyone claims will happen. Some also say that the diet is too restrictive and can also cause boredom, social challenges and some get deep unhappiness with the diet.
Unfortunately, in some cases carnivore has unveiled ugly outcomes like worsening diabetes, hormone imbalances, heart attacks and complete testicular failure.
In this video, I share the good, the bad, and the ugly of what I've learned from patients who are on the carnivore diet. I discuss who may benefit from this extreme approach versus who should avoid it.
While carnivore helps some people, it's not a cure-all and we need more research on its long-term effects.
Watch to find out! Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more health and lifestyle tips. 👍😊

What's your experience of the Carnivore Diet been?

    • @georgemoonman2830
      @georgemoonman2830 6 месяцев назад +18

We don't need to be so dogmatic. The definition of a "hyper-carnivore" is 70% meat. I personally find I'm happiest and healthiest at 90% carnivore. I think it's really important to make it clear that you CAN eat something other than meat on "carnivore".
Trying 100% carnivore is a good starting point as it cuts out all the junk and stuff like oxalates, but everyone should experiment with adding things back in to see what happens - I don't think we need high levels of carbs though. I eat less than 20g a day of carbs mostly from dairy and haven't seen the same problems youve been having.
I've done it this way as that's exactly what Shawn Baker recommends trying.
It's not surprising though that your patients have the same problems as you if they are following your advice and it seems you may have something wrong about the system you are following yourself.
Were you eating grass fed beef?
Have you been following Dave Feldman's LMHR work?
Also what is your/patients exercise regimen like?
I can halve or double my cholesterol test results by fasting or eating directly before the test, so I'm not concerned about cholesterol simply because I know a "high" reading is transitory. My blood pressure on carnivore has gone from 148/110 to 122/78. Carnivore has also cured arthritis, knee pain, shoulder pain, so many things, if I eat one slice of pizza then pain comes back (and I know it's not the cheese or meat causing that issue).
Have you tried talking to e.g. Shawn or Anthony about your results and their experience in the field?

    • @dmloredana
      @dmloredana 6 месяцев назад +6

For me it works just fine. Even my total cholesterol that everybody is talking about is below 180. It's true that I haven't had health issues before. I mean not major ones. I had scalp eczema that is gone for 10 months now ( I am carnivore for 11 months), irregular periods and pretty problematic pms, wich are also solved now. I am 42. I am still in the best shape of my life so far. If something will happen, maybe I will experiment with other things. But like others say, I am sure most carnivores that have issues are doing something wrong.

i'm about 3 months in and never felt better last month i have added back in small amounts of fruit and may add small amounts of season veg next month , i think having 80%ish meat and the rest what would have found and had available when living in the woods makes sense to me, plus that is what the isotope testing seems to show when they look at very old skeletons

I started cold turkey with 100% carnivore but have to add some low oxalate food back periodically due to oxalate dumping. Then I started getting asthmatic which I found out is due to hypochloridria. So I have to cut my protein down a bit and spread it out over 3 meals instead of 1 and take BHcl. I have no gallbladder so also hv to supplement with ox bile. So far both oxalate dumping and asthmatic symptoms have lessened a lot. Hopefully in time they will disappear. You are right. A little carb is actually helpful. I feel full as it replaces the slightly reduced protein intake. My choice of carb is almost always avocado. Once my symptoms are gone and I stay this way for a few months I'm going to ramp up my protein intake......slooowwwwly. Not making the same mistake again. Then slowly wean myself off BHcl. But I think I'll stay 80% carnivore with some keto friendly plants. The great thing about going carnivore eating is...while colleagues were dropping like flies with the winter flu I'm just fine even with my asthmatic symptoms. Plus no aftermeal sleepiness or wanting snacks or reluctance to do some exercise. Best is my hair has stopped falling out.😂..I'm just being vain

I am 76 yo six years on carnivore diet. Never heard anyone suggesting not to do blood tests. I do them regularly, and my blood work is excellent. I was successful in getting rid of my carnivore cravings. Once or twice a year I may have a low sugar cake, be it on occasion of birthday, X-mas, but definitely not as part of daily meal plan. Contrary to your findings, I found my stress level very low, in A1c 4.8 to 5.2 range. Never would I think of quitting carnivore. The only issue I have with carnivore is that it is somehow socially isolating me. But on the other hand our friends respect it and we can have some good time together.

I don't think i've ever had my blood checked. Well, i never go to doctors.I trust but myself. It's about listening to one's own body. I'm 64 and healthy. Ppl give me 40 years of age. Sometimes i'm challenging my 30-year-old son, and he's quite athletic. I used to go to the dentist every year, and my gums were quite unhealthy. I changed my diet. First keto, then now it's mostly carnivore (very low carbs). It's been 8 years that i haven't gone to the dentist, and i don't think i'll ever see one. I don't even use toothpaste anymore, not even shampoo. Just water and brush and sometimes water flush.

He's assuming others are going to fail as he did. He could have done better troubleshooting, adjusting, and could have Consulted other carnivore doctors. He's smart about boron, but still myopic on other things.
And he said oxalates was the problem. But seed oils are a problem also. Also, those with thyroid problems will have unusual results until they deal with that problem.
And ketones build mitochondria.. so that is one reason to go long term (5 plus years). And why go back to feeling awful.

I began a keto diet, changing to carnivore about 2 years later. A follow-up fibroscan showed my liver completely healed after 2 years and just last month my ejection fraction was measured at 60%! I have no clinical signs of heart failure and no liver disease. I will eat this way until I die, which I don't see happening any time soon.

Whilst i agree as a whole yes risk implies cause and effect but the fact we are alive and breathing creates risk or the possibility for anything and everything.
Many factors in life can or could be responsible for anything from chronic disease to simple things like acne. Its all mostly hormone imbalance based in the beginning that manifest as we age or overtime.
Get your mix and variety of protein and associated fats, minerals like sodium, potassium, iodine etc, eat a few berries or some fruit and veg occasionally, get morning and afternoon sun and you would be about as good as your genes and lifestyle allows.
Also lets not forget people have done incredible damage to themselves over the years/decades of life that total elimination will always work at the beginning, long term is different and from what ive seen over the years watching this subject, it takes the better part of 2-4yrs to fully adapt to carnivore.
Ignore the reference ranges for the most part, they are based on bad science and studies that don't really mean anything. 100% carnivore is new for our generational age gap and more time is needed for new reference ranges.

It is a risk factor, but it's not causal in an otherwise metabolically health person. Inflammation does the damage and if there is plenty of cholesterol available, then there is more cholesterol for building of arterial plaque. i.e if you have two people with the same arterial damage, the one with more abundant available cholesterol will develop atherosclerosis quicker.

I had osteoporosis. I'm 67. I used to smoke cigarettes 9 years ago. and drank beer all the time. Stop drinking beer all together because of the carbs and switch to Bourbon.
My pants size was 38 and after 2 weeks on the carnivore diet it was 31. The size I was when I was 18 years old. This is a rough start to the diet so if you're not healthy don't do it this way.
4 months on the carnivore diet corrected the problems of osteoporosis. Arthritis in my hand didn't allow me to pick things up and they wanted to put me on steroids. Instead I smoked marijuana. It helped a lot. On the carnivore diet I don't need marijuana cuz there is no inflammatory. There is no tooth decay. There is no melanoma, basil skin cancer. No PK's. There is no prostate cancer.
You have to fast on the carnivore diet to clear clots. If you sit around and just eat meat you'll have a heart attack. Eat until you're full and then don't eat for another day.
      Allow your ketones to work.
I would say just as important as a blood test is to get an ultrasound and check for clotting.
      Red meat is not cancerous.
Dr Ken Berry suggested adding iodine, essential minerals and electrolytes
      when you're on the diet.

So many poorly supported assumptions like "elevated homocysteine means your body is unhappy". What if elevated homocysteine is not actually problematic and is simply a response to a shift in resources? More folate may mean the body needs less homocysteine, but that doesn't mean homocysteine is inherently signaling a problem. The body has lots of alternative pathways to accomplish tasks under different nutrient loads.

31 years constantly obsessing about my food, when I can get my next fix, but not to much, but when can I have those chips/chocolate/bread based on my calorie restrictions. So mentally destructive and still overweight.

Thank you for your video... I started Carnivore in October of 2018, however, I was never able to be 100% true to eating only animal products, I continued to drink coffee and occasionally ate some other foods. I kept to about 95% Carnivore for now more than five years. I continue to have diarrhea whenever I eat a steak. I have not lost any weight, but the benefits have been so amazing that I will continue to eat mostly animal products and perhaps one of these days I will eliminate the coffee and not slip on having some carbs here and there... I have eliminated a lifetime of bleeding gums, shed about 100 skin tags, eliminated a huge growth on my leg that I had for 40 years, stopped having morning "sand" in my eyes, and the most important for me, when I keep to strict Carnivore I eliminate arthritis pain. When I go off the strict Carnivore, the arthritis pain comes back. I have not had any vegetables for more than five years. Perhaps the patients you mention may not have kept to 100% Carnivore as it is near impossible to do. I truly believe that even having coffee is detrimental, but I am an addict.

Last week ribeye steaks were $27.70 per pound in my local supermarket and fresh lamb shoulder steaks were $8.59 per pound... I wish I had bought more of the lamb. I am a person who thrives on a ketovore/carnivore way of eating. I lost 85lbs and have maintained it, I'm off of insulin and asthma medication, my eczema completely cleared up and I was able to reduce my medication for rheumatoid arthritis to half of what I used to take. I already have osteoporosis so coming off of inhaled corticosteroids is a big win along with the other big wins. My biggest win: I am no longer hungry all the time. I eat twice a day and feel fine in between. Oh, and I'm disabled and cannot go for "long walks," so my successes are purely achieved through dietary changes. I was already NOT consuming grains (even "whole grains") as they increased my glucose levels quite a bit. The only changes I made were I stopped consuming: artificial sweeteners, fruit and all but the lowest carb (& low oxalate) of vegetables. If you are wondering my triglycerides are 48, my LDL is 94, CHOL/HDL ratio is 2.0, and my TRILG/HDL ratio is an amazing 0.47!!! I don't eat for entertainment, I eat for nutrition and to not feel hungry.

I've just been back through your "what I eat in a day" video with the downloadable guide and you say you are eating 1500-1800 calories a day - THIS IS NOT ENOUGH!!
A man your size doing any amount of excercise, especially on carnivore, should be eating closer to 3000 calories a day - do a fast if you want to drop weight.
Your approach of trying to average everything out and then do "average" every day is whats hurting your health, you need to feast and fast, on the days you do eat you should be really full, not 1500 calories, thats rediculously low.

Completely fat-adapted thanks to carnivore (3 yrs). I run 100 mi/wk eating only ruminants, water & salt. Because of the weekly mileage, often in triple-digit summer temps, I take electrolyte supplements. My quarterly blood markers are always optimal, including minerals. I have been very low-carb for nine years.
I think one of the big missing pieces is fasting, I started following a fasting lifestyle with low carb refeed.
Overtime, I moved to animal based before it was fashionable. I just couldn't be bothered to count carbs .
So this included meat, fish, eggs and dairy .
Even when I was just doing mixed very low-carb, my lipid panels raised dramatically .
so for me, this isn't to do with carnivore eating per se.
I am now eating just meat, but nose to tail including organs and things like that.
Because my lipid panels were so high I had a CAC scan and it was 0
However, my doctors in their wisdom wanted me to see a Chemical Pathology consultant who said my high levels of LDL would have already given me arthrosclerosis he was unaware of my 0 CAC
He had some cognitive dissonance with the 0 score, so we agreed that he would order a CT angiogram with Iodine contrast. I had it last week.
    There is no atherosclerosis.
I'm 60 years old and my last lipid panel two weeks ago, had a Total of 15.5 mmol
    LDL 13.2mmol (about 510mg/dl)
It's difficult to know what to say, but in my own personal circumstances, these are my results, and I have no arteriosclerosis. I do not have the genetics for familial hypercholesteraemia either.
Over the Christmas period I have to say I indulged in some sugar treats and I had a lipid panel done and my lipids went down by 38% for me. This speaks to the lipid energy model that is being experimented with.
I can get these high lipids with extended fasts say 4 days no food.
so this cannot have anything to do with what I eat it is what my body is mobilising.
I simply don't think my body is making a mistake and as I don't have any heart disease, it seems that is the case.

Yeah, there's a lot missing in here and I struggle to understand how he can come the conclusions he stated. Firstly, what are the people with problems actually eating and for how long? How about their past diet...what did they do? How about intolerances/allergies...dairy, eggs?! What has been done to heal leaky gut and fix patient's microbiome? Are those people still taking medication (big deal)? What's his confidence level in respective patients sticking to the actual diet they claim to do...slip ups...something like, "yeah, went on a piss the other day...doesn't happen often...forgot to mention"?! So, it's all a bit blurry I find. Fact is, looking at his recommended diet from an evolutionary point of view, this makes no sense at all...the plants weren't available at all...they simply didn't exist (let alone 24/7 365 days a year). Another thing, animal based diet doesn't mean you're consuming carbs. Butter and eggs do not contain carbs.

I'm starting to believe he did not read Sally K. Norton's book, or maybe he skimmed it and didn't read it carefully (e.g. during his interview with Norton, she had to correct him on something with a footnote in her book which I remember reading; he clearly did not). EVERYTHING appears to be explained by oxalate overload. When you go carnivore you give up oxalate, and like Sally said, the body starts clearing oxalate too quickly in some people, so for those individuals, you need to slow down the oxalate purge by eating some oxalate. The truth is there is rarely such a thing as a pure herbivores or carnivore. Cats (big and small) are carnivores, but they sometimes eat grass, for example. Deer are considered herbivores, but in reality we find them eating snakes and birds. The truth is the medical industrial complex (not my term) is so far in the weeds this physician is still towing the line on so many things. For example, stop worrying about cholesterol! Some of the healthiest people on earth have high cholesterol levels. Lastly, he admits this is anecdotal, but it's worse than that. These are all his patients following his advice having similar problems. If he thinks getting folate and zinc is hard on a carnivore diet, he is completely ignorant of what a carnivore diet should look like.

How do you know all these alleged problems are not from the release of stored oxalates? After all, Sally Norton mentions in her book that it might take a person months, years or even decades to purge their oxalate. Like she also states in her book, you need to realize that while all these random oxalate-related problems come and go over the course of time, we also have to be aware of our overall health improving, even if that means taking three steps forward and chronically taking two steps back over the long haul.

Thanks for the video. I have been on carnivore (well not strictly all the time, but most of the time) for 7 years. I was on keto for 1 year before carnivore. In general, all my health markers improved except HPB which stayed at 160-140/120-100. This was the same before keto (even with medicine), 1 year after keto and even 7 years after carnivore. However, I do check my other metabolic markers to make sure its not causing damage, like CAC scan. It is really strange for me as I also test myself with CGM, I can see that I don't have glucose spikes that would explain high insulin. I am definitely insulin sensitive as it takes 1 hour to clear my BG down to below 5.5 after a carby meal (I was testing my BG response). I do have a mid-belly which I feel could be the cause. My current weight hovers around 76kg (but I suspect my ideal is 68 kg) which is about 2 kg up from my initial weight lost plateau as I also when on a reserve dieting protocol, which increase my weight back to 80 before dropping to currently 76 kg. This helped change my body composition and I am stronger now and I am able to fast easier, before that at 74 or even below, I was constantly cold as I was trying hard to drop weight and when I tried to fast, I had headaches. Over 7 years, there have been bouts of energy swings and sleepless nights, even on carnivore, but they resolved over time. Even my eczema is not fully recovered, since I do eat a bit dirty some of the times and I may still have fats releasing toxins over time. As for my HPB, I have been trying different things like supplements with potassium and other stuff to see how they move the needle. My carnivore journey is not straight forward and moves around all the time, because circumstances change as I getting better or sometimes fall sick or don't feel so well or as I have different targets.
I think my point is that some people go into carnivore because that is the only choice by, they didn't want to, some go into carnivore because they think its going to solve all the problems all at one (forgetting that we have accumulated those issues over 20-30 years) and yet others go into without proper understanding and thing that its either do or die. I think the overly positive message we see on youtube success stories does fuel all these unrealistic expectations. Secondly, addiction, personal habits, social and family pressure also plays into why some people feel so dreaded to be "stuck" on a carnivore diet, I mean we could say the same of vegan diet. Those we are successful and continue to eat this way stay this way because we understand its benefits and we are able work on our addiction, personal habits and social/family pressures, this may be the case for some others.
Lastly, I wonder if you could share or discuss those unsuccessful stories with the likes of Dr. Shawn Baker, Dr. Elizabeth Bright, Judy Cho, Dr. Georgia Eades (mental health), Dr Ken Berry, Dr. Paul Mason. In the carnivore community, we welcome unsuccessful stories, because this is where we learn and I am sure these practitioners would very much like to understand problems people are getting on the carnivore diet and why it may not benefit them, so that we have more comprehensive approach to health. It is interesting that you are getting all clients who were unsuccessful with carnivore, but because the details are lacking its hard to understand what is truly wrong with their approach if any. I do hope that you collab with carnivore doctors/nutritionists to discuss all these negative effects case studies, they would certainly be very interesting to listen to.

After initial (and wonderful) relief from IBS/SIBO, hemorrhoids, heartburn, depression, anxiety, arthritis, skin tags, return of strength and good energy, and a lot of other things from strict carnivore, I never had any weight loss and thought I was doing something wrong. So I went onto 'Lion Diet' (only beef, salt and water) for a few months but still no weight loss and I stopped experiencing any additional healing that I had been hoping for. I also have had a return of some heartburn, hemorrhoids, indigestion, mucus excretion in my throat upon eating anything, lowered energy, diarrhea and heart flutterings, and some tenderness in the liver area on the right side. I don't have a gall bladder, if that means anything. I got covid twice after 13 years of never getting sick prior to carnivore. I reduced the quantity of meat and upped the fat and eggs, thinking I was getting to much protein or having an allergic reaction, but that didn't help. Next, I will get some bloodwork done to see what my levels are, but after 20 months of no weight loss and continued chronic low-level inflammation and all the other issues I mentioned, I'm thinking that I'm in the category of people that Carnivore helped only temporarily. I'm super disappointed, and I will continue to include grass-finished beef, butter and eggs in my diet, but I think I'm not meant to eat ONLY meat long-term, and will have to re-introduce low-oxalate foods... I'm just surmising here because no one really knows. But our ancestors seem to have thrived on a animal based diet. Modern society however, has exposed our bodies to much more mental stress, chemicals , forever plastics etc. So just eating the way they did will not solve all the issues of our damaged bodies. In ancient times their adrenal levels obviously either spiked during a hunt or being chased (fight or flight). So their increased cortisol was almost always combined with intense physical activity. However we don't have that today, our stress is caused by other people during work seated at our desks.
Which is why I added in intense exercise for a short period every single day (sprints, jumping up a ledge jumping far as possible, pushups, squats etc - I just do one of those things a day for a few minutes). For me it worked after about 2 weeks of doing it religiously. I aslo added in some walks and gentle bike rides. It seems to flush out the cortisol and let you feel great again. The difficulty is doing this when you are feeling depressed and fatigued - which is where my wife is at. But every time she gets to exercise, she improves brilliantly.

At 71 I'm lucky to have no significant issues and i can say that at least from a medical perspective I've had extensive blood work immunologically and biochemically ,Pet scans and CT scans really over- the -top long term regular tests of all kinds monthly for about a year now. I'm fairly athletic (run 6 k a day) and fairly muscular which probably explains why I lost only 2 kg on carnivore over a 6 month period. I've always been 85 to 90 Kgs all my life at 185 cms tall but now I'm 95 kgs. I gave carnivore away recently and went for my interpreted version of a traditional Japanese diet. I eat 3 meals a day , no more intermittent fasting or OMAD I eat small meals of meat and rice with tiny serves of veg like broccoli no root veg or leafy veg ,miso soup ,and portions of pickled veg like sauerkraut, Kim Chi all organic and drink genmai tea.....never felt better and the continuing blood tests in particular are stable and some even better.and I've started to get back on track with the weight. Most of the influencers I've lost faith in ,they're selling something or just themselves... it's a cult , no one knows the longterm affects for most people on the diet quite a lot of people do well long term.I just got bored with it. I like Bart Kay at least he's a scientist but even he sells supplements and his podcasts are a bit of a comedy show with easy picking among the looney vegan crew to criticise. If plants are trying to kill us their not doing a very good job of it some plants nightshades and leafy greens and root veg I would avoid as well as most fruit except a few berries maybe. we have developed ways of processing ,preserving and detoxifying most plants . Personally, I do eat some selected dairy, certain superfoods and raw bee pollen honey (only when pathogens overwhelmed the body).
I eschew all cooked Carbs like wheat, flour-based, rice, starchy vegetables and beans and legumes.
IF is very important to practise and it definitely helps to restore and regenerate new cells.

One key issue you are describing here is people's bad relationship with food. Are they eating to live, or living to eat?
Most humans want what they want due to an emotional trigger, especially when it comes to food. We have a bad relationship with food. Food is nutrients to sustain life. Nothing more, nothing less. A buncha toddlers we are, " I WANT I WANT I WANT!!" (Most people from a first world country have this issue)
What should be sitting badly is someone is crying about eating a different food. Purely an emotional response from a bad relationship with food.
The human race really needs to go back to having food scarcity instead of living in this time of plenty. Interesting how so many food based diseases and disorders are from countries where food is bountiful and we seem to be less resilient, or more sickly, as well.

Agreed. I’m leaning more and more toward feast/famine being probably most of magic the bullet. And not the daily fast of IF (that it works for some/many is fine, and great), but the extended fasts. When we do feed, it is very likely hypercarnivore, as defined. Above all of this, stay clear of what seems to be ~90-95% of the food chain, produced by man. Everything about our environment makes it extremely difficult and antisocial to remain healthy, for most humans.

It took me 9 solid months of strict carnivore to cure all of my eczema, depression and arthritic symptoms. I can’t tell you how glad I am that I never had a doc who told me to “treat it as an elimination diet and only do it for 3 months max” and I’m so glad I never watched this video when I was starting. 3 months was nothing for me, it was long term carnivore which was the cure. A lot of people who come to carnivore do so because they need much much deeper healing and that seriously takes time.

I developed hypothyroidism and I’m on meds for life according to my doctor. Carnivore has stabilized my hypotension and hypoglycemia and healed my dry eye syndrome and for that I have decided to stay on it. I’m going for blood work on Monday and my dr is going to freak. I’m guessing my cholesterol will be through the roof or maybe I will be pleasantly surprised 🤞🏻. Because he will try to force me on statins and where I live , having a family doctor is a privilege and he will fire me as his patient if I don’t do as he says. Ego/fear. Sigh. I do take supplements because I don’t believe I can get all the nutrition I need from meat. I take C, D3, A, Zinc, selenium, lutein for my eyes and sometimes magnesium if I start getting leg or foot cramps Love your videos because you are realistic. I can’t relate to people who are 100% positive about carnivore because I am not. Have a great weekend❤

My carnivore experience was that my messed up hormones have remained messed up, my MS symptoms have remained. My digestion worsened until I started eating a small amount of carbs and a little overcooked broccoli. My LDL shot up to an unbelievable 20 mmo/l and I got yellow blotches around my eyes as a warning my LDL is far too high. I also started having hot burning pain in my feet which I'd never had before. I now have to take a statin, hoping that one 20mg dose every 4 days will be enough to lower the LDL, together with the small amount of carbs, without causing damage. The benefits I did get from my carnivore experience is better immune system, weight gain which I needed and some muscle gain. I definitely now agree that carnivore is not a perfect diet which helps and heals everyone. For those who are the wrong metabolic type, it causes more problems than it solves, at least in the long term.

Thank you Doctor from what I feel is a very honest and learned opinion. Since the medical community hasn’t studied the carnivore diet i feel we’re heading out on our own, something I feel more comfortable with than listening to the medical community that has overseen the explosion of chronic disease over my lifetime (58 years young). I’m at day 60 of carnivore and I haven’t lost weight but I’m V’ing out. Did a DEXA scan this month and I’m at the top of my age category for lean mass and bone density, not saying carnivore did that but as you say I think it has reduced my retained water that carb most definitely cause. The “good” I’ve seen is I’m getting more lean which is my goal, the DEXA said I had 60 lb of fat which needs to come down but I believe it will not fully transfer to the scale as I am still building muscle, again I do not know if this is due to the carnivore diet, also I’ve reduced bowel excretion by 6x! I feel my bowels have had a chance to rest and have strengthened! Just getting used to the different bowel movement schedule hasn’t been bad just different. I haven’t experienced any bad yet but am doing blood tests in a month so will monitor those closely for any drastic changes. Great video.

Your comment about oxalates was very interesting. I am on carnivore to help with palmar plantar psoriasis. I noticed a worsening of psoriasis at the beginning. I immediately thought of Dr. Pagano and his book, "Healing Psoriasis". In it, he mentions patients following his protocol experiencing a "die off". I have wondered whether that had to do with oxalate dumping. 90 days in, eating beef, lamb, bacon, egg yolks, butter and salt, with very occasional liver, fish, chicken or other pork. Weight loss is not as dramatic as for some (I want that, too!), but weight is down and body is reshaping. Skin looks a bit better, and it feels like it is not thickening as much, which makes me wonder whether the accelerated skin cell production is tapering off. All in all, I am very pleased. I promised the family that I would do a full blood and urine work-up after three months, and it now time. Hoping for good results.

I agree. I did keto and intermittent fasting when I started. Dropped wt. Fast. Didn't know about any flu involved but it's very real. I never gave up oxalate. I was eating protein fat vegetables blueberries even sweet potatoes n spinach, Broccoli etc. I've never given up oxaltes. My opinion is the symptoms are going from sugar burning to fat burning some detoxification and the adjustment of electrolytes during the transition. Frequent urination n muscle cramps, loss of sleep yet higher energy. I've adjusted.
Big question is why do carnivores need electrolytes daily?

Life is probably cheating them with vehicle / exhaust manufacturing pollution, contaminated drinking water, toxic chemicals in the air / water, stress, lack of sleep, broke no job, no money, in a wheelchair, maybe no eye sight, maybe no friends ir family living in a slave camp in Africa or USA slave camp. There are a lot of real people dealing with real shit. Ukraine, Israel, Honduras, Venezuela,.... So many negative comments without knowing the background of the people looking for help. Finally, I listened to my naturopathic doc who recommended a Paleo fiber product. I did not expect it to work since "everyone" was saying fiber is a joke, but it DID work (after 10 months of difficulty). I guess this is an example of one person getting what they needed despite lots of opposing advice.
Carnivore has never helped my high blood pressure, though I had hopes it would. Quitting caffeinated coffee finally stopped my heart palpitations and skipped beats! What a relief.
My A1C got as low as 5.3 but is up a little. Uric acid way down while LDL up in the higher 200s. I've noticed some mild depression creeping back...
So seems like a mixed picture for me. I'm trying to figure out your Fusion diet. When I put some honey in my coffee for the first time, WOW! what an anti-depressant effect that had! so, I tried it again today, and not so dramatic this time...

  • @dmt3412
    @dmt3412 4 месяца назад +3

I've been thinking that perhaps some of these problems may be a result of gluconeogenesis carrying on 24/7. That may increase stress levels.
What I wonder about though, is how much carbohydrate would be advisable/desirable. I tried adding 100ml of milk (4.8g of carbohydrate) to my diet, drinking it every night, just to see what would happen. Unfortunately, when I woke up my stomach was growling as though there was a live beast in there (something that had not happened in the 19 months I was on carnivore without milk). After a few days, I started feeling groggy after I woke up, even yawning when I went into the kitchen, which NEVER happened on strict carnivore. Finally, I also started gaining weight.
Another spectacular thing that occurred though, is that after 25-30 years, I am no longer lactose intolerant! Another score for carnivore!
Regarding the increase in LDL, I was also wondering if cholesterol increases as it replaces the plant sterols that had taken the place of cholesterol in the cell membranes. There would take about 3.5-4 years to be completely ejected from the body, and replaced by cholesterol.
I was also wondering how some people groups like the nations who lived on the Great Plains in North America and basically ate bison for every meal didn't seem to have heart attacks and chronic health problems like we see today. I am currently reading the book, "My People the Sioux", by Luther Standing Bear, and this is a quote from it: "At that time, we knew nothing of coffee or bread. Our entire bill of fare consisted of meat and soup." Before anyone thinks that this soup contained carrots or potatoes, the recipe states that after the stomach lining of the bison was washed, meat was washed and placed within the pouch with water and salt. Hot stones were added and the soup was boiled. That's it. No vegetation of any kind.
Anyway, I think that people should make changes if they find that their health is failing. If not, then don't bother.
As for me, carnivore is still working. If I one day find that it is no longer optimal, I will see what I can add back in to improve my health. But I will remain meat-based because meat is so nutritious. I must admit that I hate the thought of having to complicate my diet again. I just hope it won't come to that. Time will tell.
Thank you for reporting your findings. We all need to pay attention, take note, and not be so committed to a way of eating that we are unwilling to make adjustments for the sake of our health, should the need arise.

The most common reason carnivore doesn't work for someone is probably insufficient fat intake, often accompanied by excessive protein intake. If someone sucks at using fat for energy, it makes sense they would maximize gluconeogenesis via high protein intake to compensate for a lack of carbs in the diet. In the long run, this will lead to starvation and likely a bunch of the problems mentioned in this video (diarrhea, slow metabolism and low energy, kidney and liver problems, etc.).

Nothing changed this new state. No combo of macros, no changes in activity level, not even fasting! Since I was tracking intake the entire time, I know that my macro composition did not change. When I went back to Ketogenics, I felt a little better, but in order to have any reasonable degree of get-up-and-go I have to use exogenous ketones. Why is it that when all of these unresolved issues are brought up, nobody seems to propose the idea that we're coming into this mess as damaged wrecks in the first place? Carnivore hasn't healed a lot of what's going on with me, and I resent all the people who pretend as if I haven't "done it right," yet the instant I touch different food things get even worse. So what then? Do I just roll over and die? I'm betting carnivore 'is' the right choice, except we're already so screwed up in so many ways that it's hard to tell what it did or didn't address. And because of that, carnivore might 'not' be the right choice simply because our bodies can't do it right, not enough bile, unable to purge correctly, or what have you. We need personalized diets and much better ongoing and diagnostic care, and if you thought carnivore was expensive, just wait until you see what that looks like.

We're clearly designed to eat animal products. What I'd like to know is if it would be optimal and/or beneficial to eat fruits on a seasonal basis while following a carnivore program of the following: fatty ground beef (70%/30% or 80%/20%), rib eye & chuck steaks, and pasture-raised eggs.
It seems some of ancestors would eat fruits on a seasonal basis. Is it necessary? Is there some sort of cycle of fruits that would work best? As for vegetables, I'm quite convinced that they should be mostly, if not entirely avoided, especially the ones that are so modified today that they barely resemble the ones our ancestors ate. Anyhow, is a periodic cycle of fruits necessary for peak sexual, mental, & physical health? Let's find that out before we throw the baby out with the bath water. Thank you all for pursuing the truth in this matter.

The whole "risk factor" thing is often very unhelpful (silly example: wearing swim shorts is a risk factor for being eaten by a shark).
If you follow a certain diet and it finally helps you to lose all excess visceral fat, drop blood pressure, list goes on, it does not follow that you need to stop this because it may increase the risk of a heart attack because say you have elevated LDL. As a whole it could be reducing the risk of developing health issues including a heart attack.
My guess is if the entire population were to go keto/carnivore you will have a drastic reversal of many of these diseases (diabetes, heart attack etc.) because it is clear that people's health on the whole benefits so much. But I am not a medical professional and I don't advise anyone, so my opinion is simply that, mine.

I’m about to start carnivore diet, and would very much like to find out why. Based on what I have heard and read from the other carnivore people, they’re still doing great after years of being on it.

Double check with Dr. Ken Berry or Dr Anthony Chaffee They make much more sense than th3e negativity this video promotes and theirs is base on science not observation or anecdotal

The testimonies in the Carnivore community are amazing. There are 100 of thousands!
The examples mentioned in the video does not say what the people ate, they cried when they were told they can eat something other that meat, so my suspicious is that they didn't follow the carnivore diet 100% without eating other processed foods. So not examples that I would use as why a carnivore diet failed.

So, doc you've taken the concept of a carnivore diet and added your twist to it to come up with your primalfusion diet? I must say you're a marketing genius

Low Vitamin C in the serum may be a response to lower requirements and improved recycling due to better glutathione activity from an abundance of sulfur in the diet. Just because curly/ingrown hairs on your legs went away when you ate some oranges does not mean you had Vitamin C deficiency...oranges contain a lot more than just Vitamin C. Why didn't you test with an ascorbic acid supplement, which has been shown to relieve Vitamin C deficiency?

And honestly once I lost my addiction to carbs I never think of eating anything else. It is really surprising that people cried when told they can eat other things and if you are using their testimony as an observation then I would follow them more closely to make sure they are actually on pure meat and fat, adequate fat that is.

Most of the negative symptoms you are describing are signs of oxalate dumping. You can use things like baking soda, calcium and edta to help the removal of oxalates

Thanks. I had some of the carnivore side effects , such as pre-diabetes, sleep disorder, and high LDL (LMHR)
Never been fat at around 10-12% bodyfat for 30 years, so no fat loss confounders. Started eating more carbs (AKA Bioenergetics), but probably added too much too soon, so started getting inflammation in joints. Complex carbs seems more of a problem than simple carbs, so doing a reset on my journey.

I guarantee most people having these issues are not eating enough food. I had bad fatigue and could not run or lift weights at all. Then i started eating a kilo of meat per day for about 1 week and since then I have been absolutely fine. If i start to feel weak i do the same and it never fails. Works especially if constipated and tried everything, try eating a lot of food for a couple days and then you can eat less until you start seeing any problems and adjust.

They're worse than that. As this doctor explained they are literally creating eating disorders and very paranoid behaviours. Read through the comments on this page and how many are saying sugar is pretty much equivalent to mercury and you're going to die.

I think people having big issues probably need to add in some oxalates. Detox is a BIG thing. They can slowly remove over time.
Also, 30% approximately, of the population have methylation issues. Maybe carnivore is just revealing those that have underlying issues . I wouldn’t give up on the diet.. I would use it as a diagnostic tool.
You also don’t know if some have added things they shouldn’t ….

    • @Mallchad
      @Mallchad 6 месяцев назад

_do NOT_ add more oxalates, they are a poision to humans and extremely difficult to remove from tissues. That are sharp and embed themselves in your flesh. Yes carnivore could potentially reveal some tissues. Fat loss can release of the build up toxins in the adipose tissue (fat)

Very interesting. It would be much more helpful if you kept some sort of log which would provide actual numbers, rather than just citing individual cases. I am glad to be alerted to these issues but without some kind of statistics the information is degraded in value.

Carnivore doesn't fix everything. Carnivore and fasting do. If you cry because you can eat something you like ,you are having a problem.

  • @AlCiampa

This is a fair assessment. I believe that every other carnivore MD/influencer world approve of this, based on what they normally footnote their work with: “if it works for you”. It’s nothing dramatic to suggest trying 10-15g of fruit sugars from berries, especially if it improves lives. Bart Kay often reminds us that bone analysis from around the world suggest 80/20 animal/plant intakes. I personally believe that the missing ingredient is regular, but not abused, extended fasting. It seems to level the health playing field across eating habits. Well done, doc.

    • @Dakiniwoman
      @Dakiniwoman 6 месяцев назад

Oh yes! ... I also agree... Extended fasts can give incredible results. I have personally not done a water fast longer than 30 days, but water-only fasts have been incredible for me in my lifetime. I have done quite a few starting in 1974... until now. My most recent water only fast was for 16 days... I am now 78 years old.

Boring on a carnivore diet? Bacon, pork, lamb, steaks, fish, eggs, butter, deli meats, liver, cheese. Would you bet your life that those who quit were not cheating or at least eating some fruit and veggies? Have you seen the youtube interview with persons who have been on it for 13 years? You mentioned someone went switched from carnivore to animal based. That did not make sense.

With all do respect I have to say that a lot of information has been missing here, about what mistake those individuals are doing, for example: are they fasting? are they sleeping enough? are they having a variety of protein? are they exercising? are they eating a good quality meat? etc, etc...
I'm a person who's been educated myself on this matter by wanting a lot of carnivore doctors videos and others carnivore people that have been doing this carnivore for many years and I never hear any of the issues I hear in this video. So I just saying that I don't see enough information about what was the reason of the problems.

I feel there is loads of variety on a carnivore diet. All kinds of meat cooked in all sort of ways, eggs cooked in different ways and a huge variety of fish and shellfish.
