Am 69 and have been a drinker since I was in my teens. Never considered myself an alcoholic but often drank heavily. Of late, I was suffering with really bad acid reflux every time I had a glass of wine so I decided to stop drinking completely. Have not had acid reflux since and have lost weight too. Am sleeping much better, the brain fog I used to get on a regular basis has gone and it’s also meant I’m saving money and putting it towards more constructive things. Wish I’d done it years ago and it proves it’s never too late to stop 👍

Going on 3 weeks being sober from alcohol I can definitely say it was one of the greatest thing I ever gave up. I feel more energetic, my anxiety are under control, and I lost a significant amount of belly. For those who are suffering you are not alone you have to look at alcohol as poison, it’s not easy whenever you have the will to end it trust me it will definitely be worth it. Stay strong!!! Never give up

These signs, among others, may not alarm or frighten you, but the last sign that he mentioned should. A complication known as Hepatic Encephalopathy; I don't understand all the dynamics of this complication, but when I witnessed it, - it scared the living hell out of me. When you see someone you love more than anything else in the world develope this, it is devastatingly heartbreaking, - especially if you are standing helplessly alongside them in a hospital room while four nurses are holding them down and necessarily hurting them. It is absolute agony. They'll anxiously or hopelessly stare right at you, calling-out your name, - over and over and over. They'll be screaming for you, and you're assuring them right into their face or ear and it's absolutely hopeless. I have never known heart-tearing agony like that. My God, if you're a heavy drinker,
PLEASE at least think about this. I know the idea of stopping is like just, - there's just no way, - believe me, I understand this all too damn well. My own personal alcoholism was so bad, I had to finally leave the whole State to work it out in ... nevermind, it was hell. But thank God, I took away what I'd learned, and spent several years alone out there, and finally, I was free. If I can do it, - I KNOW that you can to. Please believe me. Please don't mess around with yourself in this way, I swear to God, eventually your body's gonna crash, and when it does, failures don't like to be alone. When one thing shuts down, everybody seems to follow the leader.
Well, I feel like I've kinda made an ass out of myself here. But if humiliating myself allows just one person out there to think about it, - just think about it, - my naivete and embarrassment was worth a thousand prayers.

You are helping me. I have been drinking almost a half gallon of vodka daily. It wasn't immediate, but slowly over the pandemic I just isolated and started drinking more and more. I'd black out constantly and wake up with bruises and injuries having no idea what happened. I felt so much shame and guilt I stopped seeing or talking to any of my family or friends. I threw my phone in the river one night and made it impossible for anyone to get ahold of me. I was truly just alone with my bottle.
Three days ago I woke up in a hospital after blacking out somewhere and I was forced to detox. I am now three days sober and I can't say it is easy. I feel EVERYTHING now. I have no filter, nothing to numb the real life problems that I have caused in my alcoholism. I can however say that I am finally being honest with myself and others. I have a problem and it is time to fix it.

My dad died from drinking at 66 last year. He had HE and it caused him to lose his mind. He forgot who his grandson was. He would only talk about the past. He would sometimes forget who I was. He mistook my husband for my abusive ex boyfriend and got really upset and kept asking me if I was ok and then yelled at my husband to leave. It was awful. I can’t imagine what my dad went through the last year of his life. Being an alcoholic he hid it from us but we knew his health wasn’t great. My stepmom refused to let us move him to a better care facility. The worst time of my life. Yet I still drink even after being sober almost 2 years. This disease is a nightmare.

@@kmr4360 I understand. I really understand, - entirely. To 'understand' something is a rather curious phenomenon for us human beings. May I use the simplest of examples, - riding a bicycle for instance. I will simply never believe that for us humans - understanding something is really ever possible without an 'experience' of it. I do not believe that there is any qualitative difference, - only a quantitative one. I'm saying this because there just isn't anyone who can understand the horror that you have passed through, without having the, or an, - experience just like it.
For me, it was just terribly frightening to witness this in someone I have loved, and I have known for so very long. It became worse once in the hospital. I'll not reiterate what's already been said, you know all-too well the living nightmare that must be lived with. I am very sorry you also had to live with - and through this. Just reading your reply was a little hard. But thank you very much for your response to my comment.

I found myself hanging out and spending money drinking and I didn't really enjoy it anymore or see the point of it. @@kathrynpaigebabin yes, the majority did go away completely thankfully ! Only a few few small ones remain.. In my heaviest years of drinking many people noticed them and asked me about them... before I even noticed they were there. I didn't know why at the time...
Until an older woman who was basically a stranger to me that was dying from scaring of the liver/liver cancer (AKA liver cirrhosis) from her many years of alcoholism... She told me they were from drinking too much alcohol for too long, that if I could ever quit alcohol... they'd go away. I quit a few yrs later. It took me hitting rock bottom in every way...(some are sicker than others 😭💯🙌🙏). I was down to my last unburnt bridge and last person, close to losing those 2 very quickly and I knew I was slowly drinking myself to death 😭, just like my mom and uncle did. I decided I did want to live and didn't want to hurt myself or anyone else anymore and so I finally quit. (RIP mom and wadzy... gone too soon, never forgotten 😭🙌)
My mom and one of her 2 younger brothers both died very slow and extremely painful deaths... related to their decades of alcoholism...
My uncle wouldn't stop drinking whiskey, so he couldn't be put on a transplant list 😭 and as he started actually dying, had to be put in hospice care, his alcohol withdrawal made him UNABLE to recognize his own 2 grown kids or his high school sweetheart wife of over 30 yrs or even know who he was, extreme pain and confusion... 😭 and then almost a year to the day he passed... my mom passed away too on Oct 2nd 2012 😭🤬😭... (although she did quit alcohol for over 10 yrs before her death..) she couldn't be put on the transplant list 😭🤬... so she spent the last 5ish yrs of her life severely ill, unable to work, struggling on disability, losing all her weight (except her stomach area, it remained very big and swollen, hard and painful to the touch) the fluid surrounded all her organs, so she'd regularly have 2 2 liters of fluid drained from her body cavity every 2-3 months. Painful,.pricey and continuous procedure.. Due to complications from liver cancer from alcoholism...the many capillaries in her throat kept bursting and leaking blood and other fluids into her body cavity around all organs instead of where it should be in the capillaries, veins etc... Which lead to nausea, loss of appetite, pain and throwing up blood the last 3 wks of her life. Every few days it'd get to be too much for her and her body, so she'd have to go to the hospital again, they'd put stents in/on her capillaries holes and stop the bleeding ("stabilizing" her for 2 days) they'd send her home, until the next time it started all over again.. This happened over and over, until at the end of the third week... She finally lost the fight to the disease of alcoholism. After watching a parent spend their last 3 wks alive... in extreme pain, puking up blood several times a day, no appetite, extreme nausea, soo many ambulance rides and ER trips and stays, and scares for my 20 yr old sister, my mom, myself and my 2 small kids under 5 yrs old... With no other way to cope or stop severely grieving.... I became an even more severe alcoholic myself within the first 8 days of her passing for the next decade or so... 😭. I'm grateful it didn't kill me too. Through no actions of my own mostly... My life was for some reason saved many times... by something beyond me and this earth, higher than me and outside of me. I survived a lot... when others, especially females.... who didn't want to die like I did, instead get raped and murdered etc 😭🤬 5 yrs ago I decided I was breathing the generational curse of alcoholism/addiction in my family tree 🙌💯❤️ hugs and healing prayers to all alcoholics& addicts still actively using and struggling to stop and stay stopped. I'm now getting what i always needed but avoided with alcohol & drugs. Stop avoiding my pain, sadness, anger etc and learn to feel, process, accept and heal all my Childhood traumas (C- PTSD) AND misdiagnosed and untreated mental illness. By quitting, going to meetings and doing all steps/actions to stay not only a dry drunk but an alcoholic in recovery not only sobriety 💯🙌❤️ #WEDORECOVER

As a longtime RN, the sickest patients I ever cared for had alcoholic cirrhosis. Everyone's heard the old saying, "there's worse things than death" and IMO cirrhosis is way worse than death. The patient is extremely uncomfortable with his swollen abdomen and ascites (fluid). Most cirrhotic patients also have some degree of renal failure as well. Their diet is fluid, protein and sodium restricted. They can't eat much of anything and they truly need protein to heal but too much will put them into hepatic encephalopathy and cause them to go into a coma. Some of them are still addicted to alcohol which makes everything worse. The swollen belly can sometimes leak peritoneal fluid and they'll get peritonitis. They have to take huge amounts of laxatives in order to help flush out the high amount of bilirubin in their stool from their failing liver. They're in pain and can't have much of anything for pain because it could kill them or cause them to go into a coma. These patients are truly miserable and the disease process lasts for a year or two until death. I have never seen or heard of anyone beating cirrhosis. It's pretty much fatal. I got very close with the family members of patients with cirrhosis and I was always truthful and honest with them, explaining everything we were doing for their loved one. It's a very sad situation.

I'm 40 and I've been drinking 6-10 light beers day for 18 years before quitting cold turkey. I luckily didn't get any of these. I'm just a beer guy myself as well. 40 as well and never had any of these symptoms. Doctor says the liver and all organs are fine. Liver as a little grease on it but nothing that concerns him. About a 6 pack a day drinker for the past 15 years. I tapered off. Drank a little less a day so I wouldn't get any withdrawals. I'm okay, it's just the insomnia is tough. After being used to falling asleep either drunk or buzzed for pretty mich the whole last 15 years. It's hard to just fall asleep.

The people left behind to pick up the pieces are the ones that suffer the trauma. My Father functioned very well to the end. Did not miss work, held the same job for 19 yrs, ECT. You would never guess it. There was a barrel of empty whiskey bottles in our basement , you never saw him without a beer and a Camel cigarette. Or Lucky Strikes. I wonder if he ever looked at a bottle and thought " my kids need me more than I need this"? Apparently not.

Drs said their liver looked like someone in their 70s that had been drinking a long time but these kids started drinking heavily only a year. I worry about my step daughter who is off at college. When she comes home to visit I totally snoop to see what is in her car. Of course there is alcohol and vapes. Vaping is really bad as well. More and more kids are experiencing lung issues because of those stupid things.

I live with cirrhosis every day, but I am extremely grateful for those who stood behind me and supported me though this horrible time in my life. I am sober now 15 years and live a much happier and healthier life. If you have someone in your life that is suffering alcoholism, consider that they are suffering with a serious disease like any other. So long as it’s not detrimental to you, consider giving them your support if they are willing to put forth the effort to change. That support is what saved my life and I did change, I’ve not touched a drop since and never will. I only regret the pain I put the people I love through whilst in the grip of this disease! I’m 17, and my dad has been a heavy drinker all my life. Recently, I’ve noticed that his eyes turned yellow. I also found a bit of blood on the toilet that he didn’t wipe after he went number 2. He throws up a few times per week, and he’s always moaning in pain. I always told him that I don’t care if we end up homeless (because we currently live off of the government since he lost his job due to his drinking), I just want him to take care of his health. Although around 5 months ago he was 6 months sober, he’s been drinking even more than he used to since the summer. I think my family has given up on him because he gave up on himself, and I think he gave up on himself partly because the family gave up on him. However, my brother and I still try to support him as much as we can, but he won’t change, or even talk about it with us.
A few days after Christmas, my mom found out that he found a woman online a few months ago and spent the rest of our savings on her. He blamed the fact that he was lonely on my mom because she “left him” and didn’t keep the house clean. He told me that if we just kept the house clean, he probably wouldn’t have cheated on my mom multiple times and drank.
Sorry for the long story lol, but I’ve been thinking a lot about whether or not I should still support my dad in trying to quit his drinking. Because although I want to help him get out of his addiction, I don’t know if my efforts are even doing anything.
As someone who has been through alcoholism, I’d really appreciate it if you could give me some insight into what I should do!
I hope you are still going strong, and I wish you a Happy New Year!

Ask how to get power of attorney over him and get him help. Never too late. And if it is than atleast you did ur best for him. Trust me it's hard rough road. My father and mother separated. Left my brother and me to take care of him. We didn't know how bad he was till she left. Weight of alcoholism was too much to bare. My brother and I did. My brother left the house to do his own thing. And I was left alone to bare the weight. I got power of attorney of him and got him into rehab. He recovered. But shortly relapsed and a truck vehicle hit him in the streets. He was awesome loving father. Do your best you can and don't give up. Remember u can cry and let it out when u can. It helps. Trust me. Your dad's on a rough road. "Can't rain everyday."

My niece (31) died two weeks ago from her alcoholism. The thing is none of us knew she was an alcoholic. She was extremely high functioning and she was what seemed addicted to exercising. She was very fit. 100 lbs on her 5'4 frame. She never seemed tired and never missed work. Hiked everyday too before work. Then in a blink of an eye she was 20 lbs heavier. It happened so fast. She died from heart failure. The doctor said she was in liver failure but refused help. There was no jaundice. Not even on the day of her death which was like everyday for her, she was up, got herself ready, fixed her hair applied her makeup, did her hike, went to work, came home did her evening workout,. sat down and died. How is that possible??? The only thing that changed quickly was the weight gain. The doctor told her she needed to stop cold turkey, she was on her third day cold turkey. I think this is what killed her. From what I've heard a long time full blown alcoholic cannot go cold turkey. How I wished she'd reached out to me. How I wish I'd known. She was like my daughter. she even called me momma. I rarely ever saw her drinking and when she did, in front of me it was never excessive. As a person who has never touched any kind of alcohol when I see people drinking I pay attention, because I'm usually wondering what do they get out of it.

    • @MattExzy
      @MattExzy 6 месяцев назад +3

Hmm. That's very bizarre to hear a doctor suggested cold turkey quitting, that's very old thinking. Ordinarily they'll advise patients to continue to drink their usual amount until they can receive active care and rehab.

If that doctor told her to quit drinking cold turkey you should sue them for malpractice. Unless she was lying to them about how much she was drinking. Alcohol withdrawal causes seizures and all kinds of medical problems. A true alcoholic should only quit drinking under medical supervision, preferably an inpatient setting.

My Step father died from Boerhaave syndrome when he was 44 , he was in hospital a year before with sclerosis of the liver.
His windpipe ruptured at home and the only reason he made it to the hospital was because the ambulance station was literally a minute away .
He was bleeding out in the bathroom, when they came they took him straight into intensive care but he also caught MRSA and a week later he died .
These things should be shown to teenage children before leaving school so they can see the effects of excessive alcohol abuse and even be taken into intensive care units so they can see the damage it causes and the pain and stress it puts on all concerned and like nicotine it’s so dangerous and readily available.
And his alcohol abuse caused suffering in the household for over twenty years .
I hated him at times but he was still more of a dad than my real father .
Still remember sitting on his shoulders watching Queen at Wembley when I was still a boy .
He was so drunk when we saw Dire Straits that he thought we had gone and come back 😂
I never drink alcohol , I don’t even drink tea or coffee or juices, my work associates think I’m weird because I just drink water and the occasional milk .
He would drink 3 cans of Special Brew before going to work , take 4 cans to work with him have rum and blacks at lunchtime then drink special brew and moose head cider snakebites when he got home .
There was never any money in the house because he’d drink it all away .
I lost my Brother two years later to drug addiction aged 37 , 25 years on i still miss them .

I’m really sorry you went through that, I can’t imagine losing 2 family members due to addiction. I’m 17 right now, and my dad, who has been drinking for over 20 years, is showing signs of liver disease. I feel really bad for all families going through this. For me, it’s a viscious cycle of understanding my dad. Sometimes I see him as the kind dad who bought me peeps marshmallows from the store, and sometimes I see him as the selfish provider who chose to drink instead of taking care of his health for himself and for the rest of the family. It’s really hard to see both sides of someone you love. Anyways, wishing you a happy new years and success in life whatever that may mean to you!

He was already gone before the paramedics got ther and I'm thinking he probably was when I found him also. He was completely unresponsive and not breathing and no pulse but he wasn't cold or stiff yet so it must have just happened within the hour of me finding him. Reason I left this comment was because wen I saw them spider circles it brought me back to the moment I turned the lights on and seen him laying on the floor against the wall corner. His legs wer covered in them circles. It's something I haven't been able to get out of my head since it happened almost 4 years ago.

A traumatic shock like that is very hard to get over quickly. It takes time. It's usually tied in with fear of the alcoholic and shame at the relief of their passing, even if they were well loved. Especially if they were well loved! There's a sense of betrayal with them. It's not your fault, it shouldn't have happened to you but we don't get to chose a lot of things in our lives. Recovering is something you can control. Alcoholics Anonymous has many offshoot programs to help the survivors of alcoholics. The motto is the same and it's a good one, "One day at a time!". Good luck.

I’ve known quite a few people with liver disease and died of it and they didn’t have any of those symptoms except mild jaundice from time to time but difficult to notice in most cases. Quite often the patient is very thin, and becomes starved. I’d say and extreme tiredness, loss of weight and constipation are the key symptoms.

I was given 3 months to live after a medical detox. I drank for 40 years and ended up at a handle of vodka a day, basically a cycle of drinking, passing out, puking and mental confusion, ascites, jaundice and brown urine. Absolute hell. I somehow survived hospice and have been 100% sober for 5 years and living with compensated cirrhosis. All my symptoms have disappeared for now, and my blood work is excellent. I know how hopeless a person can feel, but you can beat addiction and live even if you think it's too late. A medical detox is mandatory for a serious alcoholic or extreme misery and death could result. Please get help.

@@stevensuhar8302 I agree 100% our conditions can improve. I've researched the hell out of all my alignments and I'm on top of the lot of them.
My compensated liver functions entirely normally. My pancreas is still chronic (and "perhaps" may always be so) My varacies are Grade 1 so nothing too worry about there.
Haven't had a drink in nearly four years after a near lifetime of chronic cocaine and alcohol abuse. The only surprise out of it all is that I'm still alive.
I also forgot to tell you my spleen WAS enlarged at 15cm. I was told by my so called "specialist" it would never reduce in size. After obsessive reaserch I found the Carnivore diet of which I've been on for the last 3 years.
My spleen as of the last Ultrasound (last Saturday) is now 13.2. I was so pleased. The diet is extremely restricted but I'm convinced it's healing my body AND mind !
Do you use any medication ? I take Carvidilol and Omeprazole. The Carvidilol is a beta blocker which easies portal pressure which in turn helps the flow of blood to the liver.
The Omeprazole is for acid reflux and also goes in helping in the likelihood of any ulcers appearing from acid reflux. So considering all my alignments my medication list is extremely small.
You say you have the feeling of impending doom. DONT my friend. You can live literally for decades with compensated liver disease and I plan in seeing my eighties and beyond.
