- A buzzing / Humming Marantz Receiver Transformer Repair
This should work for any Amplifier or Receiver, Pioneer, Sansui, Sony etc
Update: Over a year passed, how is it holding out now after plenty of use, find out here, • Fixing Buzzing Vibrati... .
( DISCLAIMER ) If in doubt get a qualified electronic engineer. I accept NO responsibility on any errors you make.
BEFORE ATTEMPTING FIX: Unplug unit and make sure any Power Supply Capacitors are discharged
fully. Видеоклипы
Michael, good video I would just suggest you mention unplugging and allowing time for capacitors to discharge before going in.
Thanks Michael, Good Point
Many thanks sir, I have a vocal processing box in my voice booth with same problem - something you really don’t want in a soundproof environment - and it’s fixed the problem. I thought I was going to have to spend £80 on a new transformer. Fixed in 20 minutes. Thanks again!
Only glad you got the buzzing sorted out, thanks for the comment.
Thank you!!! Gives me hope with my old NAD amplifier.
Good fix, another good video. Thanks.
Great video , thank you .
Thank you so much for this!! I have a receiver with this problem and it’s doing me head in
You're welcome!
Very helpful, thanks!
My MR 215 had a buzzing sound from the transformer, and the bottom panel seemed to be amplifying it significantly. When removed the sound completely vanished. I placed some cloth underneath the transformer to dampen it and while not completely gone, it's quiet enough that I dont notice while using it :) Thank you for the video
I have had a few buzzing transfomers where even after re gluing the case etc they work silent out the unit, but as yours does the bottom panel seems to amplifier or resonate with the transformer at 50hz, but like yours its only slight noise. I have tried varnish but still no joy, still have that slight buzz when inside unit. But still much better than it was. Rubber washers holding the transfomer in place can help to
@@MichaelYates I planned on getting rubber washers but it was late at night so the hardware store was closed, the cloth worked quite well as stand-in but I reckon I'll get the rubber washers at some point
Thanks a lot sir
Only to glad that the video helped you.
Michael Yates I was facing same problem sir.
Hi, I’m a subscriber. My class A amp, (adcom gfa5802) just recently developed a slight buzzing hum on the left channel. Do you think the filter capacitors for the left channel are bad? I checked the DC voltage at the speaker terminals and they’re at 0.025V, so I think the coupling capacitors are fine. Or do you think it’s something else? Thanks in advance.
Would that noise cause a 50hz sound hum or buzz through the speakers
Good day mine is sony str km5 model when switch on its buzzing in the subwoofers but disappeared in few minutes tried different sockets switch off appliances check all audio cables but rest of the day no buzzing thanks
That could be the mains filter caps just going out of spec but once warmed up run ok enough to stop the buzing, but a guess without listening snd seeing unit
I've got a 1988 Yamaha TX500 tuner, which is very nice but buzzes. I've had the transformer out and realised that it's the fins. I've tried glue on them but it's only worked bit.
I'm inclined to put a small G clamp on it and leave it on if that fixes it !
Can be annoying, if gluing failed then a clamp or even a long bolt with a inch washer each end. bolted to either side of top of transformer may do the trick.

Good suggestion !
Thanks.
Is this transformer vibration transmitted to the audio output/speakers? something like you can hear the buzzing from the speakers?thank you
No it is only the Transformer buzzing, no buzzy is being passed on through the speakers.

Hi, my Desktop power supply (new) has the same sounds it is under the warranty and sticker on screw. Any suggestions? Thank you.
If under warranty I would take it back, but if you did not want to then removing stickers and undoing screws would get you inside and might be a case of transformer vibrating against case, but once undone you would void warranty
Hi Michel
buzzing problem: I thought it was the transformer but in reality it is in perfect condition, it is the fins of the dissipator that vibrate, can it be solved? lowering the bias current the vibration decreases.
I would keep the bias currant as manual. I don't think there is solution to it electronics wise though have read on a few forums that placing something between the fin blades that are buzzing like a piece of rubber or comet might help as shown on this forum discussing output transistors heatsinks, if you scroll down you will a few pics. This might be one way as long as the fins don't get really hot
Ive picked up a Sansui Au101 and it has a constant 40hz frequency humming along with some sound problems, but the latter could be related. Any idea what it can be?
If you were in the UK and it was a 50hz hun then the power cap and diodes would be a good place to start. But 40hz is very unusal and never come a cross it before. I might be a feedback issue / bad earthing or picking up from another source nearby,
@MichaelYates it might be closer to your thoughts of 50. Thanks for your reply. The sound is also, apart from the hum, not processing well. The volume button doesnt seem to have not that much of influence on gain as it should on. I am going to have it serviced soon :)
If it is 50hz then sounds like power supply cap and maybe diodes, as for not getting much louder when turning volume that could be a few things again not enough voltage from power supply could be the reason. Well worth getting a service as a nice little amp and not to many parts to service so should not be to expensive
Look at the camera its freaky 😁
Hi sir i want to ask you something what is the name for that glue? Thanks so much.
UHU glue, but ant general purpose glue should do the trick, If you see some gaps in the fins then I would maybe use some wood varnish first as this is quite thin and will go between the gaps, just use a paint brush. let that dry then use thicker general purpose glue for casing.
yes you are right you have to do a dr jake and make the range of video's better i find out when i was one here you don't

Not always an easy one to get to the bottom of. A few suggestions would be , bad earthing, main smoothing caps in power supply, faulty cables. Internal earthing, nearby equipment. Paul at PS Audio goes through a few ways you might be how to fix this, being in the USA they have 60hz hum, but the same as UK 50hz, link here www.psaudio.com/ps-how/how-to-find-and-fix-hum/
