    I have the G&M Linkwood 15 and 25 very good whiskies. But my G&M Mortlach 15 is one of my favorite whiskies ever. Thinking about getting the 25... and it's 279 for the G&M Mortlach 25. If you can get the CS G&M Caol ila 25... it's maybe the best thing I've ever put in my mouth.

    I think all 3 of you hit the nail on the head with your perspectives. I'm only a few years into my whisky journey and like Ian I stuck with Official Bottlings because I thought that was the better way of discovering the intended expressions of various distilleries. Jake and Stevie you brought different yet just as valid points with the intent of the "Discovery" G&M expressions. You all answered the questions I've been afraid to ask. All that to say, I will be more open minded before I give a pass on an IB release. There's just so many curiosities and temptations which challenges anyone's economical restraint. Well done gentlemen!

    Another great video chaps! Thanks so much, once again! I love G&M! The consistency of quality is outstanding and they're invariably at least fairly priced and often incredibly priced. It's one of the few IBs that don't take the absolute p1ss with their pricing here in Canada too. When can I expect the pleasure of getting my grubby paws on a whisky baron bottling this side of the pond, Jake!? All this talk of the Glenrothes and Glentuchers bottlings you've put out have me veritably frothing at the gills mate!

    Interesting Podcast lads.
    Quick comment ref the ‘entry’ Glenrothes.
    Ian’s point is relevant regarding comparative bottling’s. I’d add the ‘Dronach 12 to his examples of SB10 and Bunna 12. So difficult NOT to automatically compare when you know how consistently good some core range releases are for less ££.
    Incidentally The Mortlach 15 distillery label bottling at 46% is very good to my mind.

      ye, I definitely hear you here - it's a good point. I suppose it comes down to having the option of wanting to know that you'll hit the mark with a bottle or wanting to explore something that might be a bit different. each to their own and there's no right or wrong

  • @hoodwiser7652
    @hoodwiser7652 7 месяцев назад +6

    I’m with Ian, for a long time I tended to buy OB’s only as I just didn’t know enough about the huge amount of independent bottles out there. Even now, with considerably more experience, there are so many choices, and like everyone I have a budget meaning I can’t just buy everything. I tend to buy well reviewed IB’s because they are the only ones I can reasonably expect to be of sufficient quality, and just rolling the dice on an IB isn’t something I want to do. There’s just far too many options out there to be buying whatever bottle is thrown out by an IB. It’s not about money, I’ll pay 500quid plus for the right bottle, but I won’t spend that merely hoping for a good pour. There’s great IB’s out there, but there are a ton of duds as well, and I think for beginners it can feel even more intimidating.

    • @jacobcalix3774
      @jacobcalix3774 7 месяцев назад +2

      For Americans (or at least I) it is the complete opposite. My entrance into scotch was IB's because of the affordability and allocation. I will say that I do work in hospitality so there is a bit of privelidge of knowing where to go through professionals!

    • @IanBear1000
      @IanBear1000 7 месяцев назад +1

      I think it’s also the fact that some IBs deliberately seek out casks that go against the house style that also makes it confusing! Glad it’s not just me though

    • @TheWhiskyBaron
      @TheWhiskyBaron 7 месяцев назад

      it seems as though you and Ian are with the majority reading through these comments and I definitely appreciate your POV. I think the difficulty with IBs (both as a buyer and operating as an IB in the market) is that you need to prove to consumers that they can trust each and every one of your releases which is not the easiest when it comes to entry level drinkers. however, I think that IBs have the opportunity to create more interesting releases for enthusiasts or those willing to take a bit of a risk. what are your favourite IBs so far? any that you'd return to frequently?

    Great episode again! I was on a tasting last week and it was all indie bottlings which really opened me up to Indie brands as only a few years in to Whisky Journey. Agree with Ian, I have found it easier to get in to whisky in to own label as their easier to identify on the shelf and assume(maybe wrongly) that it ensures quality. I tried a Deerstalker Wild Scotland Glenrothes 10yr bottled at 55.9% and ended up buying a bottle purely on this amazing strawberry yogurt note on the nose. Such a summer drinking dram. 👍🏻 Issue now I might need to go pick up a bottle of that linkwood! 😂

    Funny that you're releasing this just a few days after I've picked up my first G&M, a 2017 bottling of Blair Athol. 9 years in refill sherry and part of the older design Connoiseurs Choice line (the base level, where I belong ;-) ). My local whisky shop had a bunch lying around for 40€ a bottle, so definitely worth a punt. I'll probably pop it this week.
    In my mind G&M do have an impeccable reputation, but unfortunately compared to other IBs, especially Signatory, they are a more "premium" option here in Germany, usually coming in 10-15% higher in price on comparable bottlings. Still, based on their reputation I'm sure the Blair Athol won't be my last G&M bottle. Unless it's a stinker of course, but I'm not terribly worried of that.

  • @greigmartin4339
    @greigmartin4339 7 месяцев назад +2

    I fully agree with Ian here. For an indie bottler to put out a whisky at the same strength 40, 43, 46% as an OB they have to do it cheaper for it to be of any interest. I have seen G&M Bunnahabhain 10 year old bottles at 43% with a £50 asking price in the past year and knowing how good that 12 OB is for £10 less at a higher strength they can stay on the shelf. I would rather buy from Whisky Baron or North Star or Cadenhead or Adelphi or Signatory or many others ahead of G&M. they clearly are big players and have the stocks but they don’t impress me that much with what they put out for what I can afford at below £100.

    On the subject of seemingly excessive cask types within a release, Bruichladdich performed a masterstroke with their branding of the Black Art series. They can play around with as many different casks as they like without disclosure and ultimately the proof is in the pudding. The whiskies are judged on their aroma and flavour alone. Jura, on the other hand, attempted to bury their spirit with a Seven Wood. Didn't work!
