In the early '60s, four friends from Liverpool formed a band. But this is not the ‘fab four’ story we know . . .
The Liverbirds, comprising Mary, Sylvia, Valerie, and Pamela, were the first ever all-female Rock'n'Roll band. Despite John Lennon's early skepticism at the Cavern Club, where he declared 'girls don't play guitars,' they embraced the challenge. Within just five short years, they conquered tough crowds at the Star Club, toured stadiums, recorded two hit albums, and collaborated with legends such as the Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and Chuck Berry.
In their newly released book, "The Liverbirds," surviving members Mary McGlory and Sylvia Saunders, share their full and remarkable story. The book, published by Faber on March 14th as both a print and audio version, captures a lost era of liberation and Rock'n'Roll, highlighting their thriving years in the vibrant Merseybeat music scene. It’s also a story of enduring friendship spanning decades.
The Liverbirds made a comeback at the end of 2023, welcoming Molly-Grace Cutler and Lisa Wright, known from the successful Liverpool musical "Girls Don't Play Guitars", as featured artists. The band recorded their new album in Hamburg, where it all began as well as in Brighton. The first single, "Diddley Daddy," is mixed and mastered in thrilling DOLBY ATMOS, promising an exciting experience for fans and audiophiles. The Liverbirds' revival coincides with the resumption of the musical in September 2024.
The Liverbirds are Mary McGlory (bass), Sylvia Saunders (drums), Molly-Grace Cutler (vocals & guitar) and Lisa Wright (vocals & guitar)

In 2019 we saw a wonderful play called "Girls Don't Play Guitars" Which was the musical story of The Liverbirds, at The Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool. The actors/musicians were fab and really brought the story to life.
Then as a special treat. The two surviving members Mary McGlory & Sylvia Saunders came on stage to rapturous applause. Mary donned her bass guitar and Sylvia slotted in behind her kit and joined the cast in a rendition of "Peanut Butter". What a great great night.
My only hope is that the show gets put on DVD. I know the two remaining girls have written a book and I can't wait to read it.

It’s a real bugbear of mine when directors or editors of performances appear to know very little about music. The 60’s seemed to suffer the most when they tried to be a bit 'arty' and some of it is either laughable or highly annoying.
A big culprit is Cream’s 1968 farewell show at the Albert Hall. A great live band but bloody hell some heads should have rolled for the visuals!

    NICE JAM BY THE LIVERBIRDS!!!
THE LIVERBIRDS as in Liverpool, as in Beatles. They were likely thinking of being the all-female Beatles band of its day with bang cuts and the drummer's sideburns, how cool was that! so Ringo! Peanut Butter was the one song that spread throughout the world and made them the most bread. Yes. This group also performed at the famed Cavern Club and they returned to perform there again back in 2019. It has been reported that John Lennon at the time (60's) told the all-girl band that girls don't play the guitar...WOW!!!
Need I say years later, John was possibly taken aback by his own words. There is a cool article about the band in FAR OUT magazine online, dated August 4th, 2022. Look for the featured article, "The forgotten band who blew The Beatles out of the water at The Cavern Club."

I know this song from the Royal Guardsmen's cover. (They did Snoopy vs the Red Baron.) There's also a camp song based on this refrain. I'm now wondering if the Liverbirds were the original artists. It seems slightly unlikely to me that an all-girl band would have a sleeper hit like this one. Not impossible, of course, but that's two coincidences at once.
Just checked -- apparently it was first released by the Marathons in 1961.
The Royal Guardsmen didn't release their version till 1967. It's still my favorite.

People who dont know The Liverbirds, should really look them up. They were very popular in Britain during their time. Unfortunately, the American producers that were going to bring them over wanted to exploit them as females, ather than serious musicians. There used to be a documentary about them on RUclips. It's probably still on here.

There were others. I remember reading that when a record company signed a girl rock band back then, they took their guitars and pants away and gave them gowns. There was not much imagination when it came to marketing pop artists back then. Not sure how much there is much now days, but far more than then.
And as cool as these girls go, how many of us ever heard of them.
But imagine The Ronettes or The Shangri-Las performing like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. How cool would that have been to your teen or preteen dreams?!
