- This performance was filmed in the Berlin Waldbühne for the 1965 German feature film 'Hurra, Hurra, die Rattles kommen' ('Hurray, The Rattles Are Coming!')
The Liverbirds were an all-female rock band hailing from Liverpool, England and were active between 1963 and 1968. They found commercial success predominantly in Germany with residencies at Hamburg's world-famous Star Club on the Reeperbahn. The classic line-up featured Valerie Gell and Pamela Birch on vocals and guitar and the rhythm section consisted of Mary McGlory on bass and vocals and Sylvia Saunders on drums.
Amidst the flourishing Merseybeat scene, they stood out as one of the very few female bands and were pioneers of all-female rock’n'roll bands worldwide. Their name was inspired by the emblematic liver bird, symbolizing their beloved hometown of Liverpool. Although primarily known for their cover versions they had also several self-penned hits.

Only learnt about these ladies, The Liverbirds, because of an article about John Lennon. They sound brilliant and deserved way more recognition

Wow. Never even heard of this band before yesterday. Heard their song "Peanut Butter" on Deep Tracks, thought it was funny, and decided to check them out. Didn't know they had girl bands that early on. Audience reaction is hilarious.
There's been girl bands since the very beginning, just under the radar.
Good band. The drummer had stage presence and a seemingly fun personality.

It's easy to laugh at the silly anticks of the audience today.
But, people simply didn't know how to behave at a concert in the early days.
I don't mean that as an insult, honestly I don't. 😒
Culturally it was a NEW thing to do - and people literally didn't know what to do.
Usually they danced . It was ALL dance music. Here , they have to sit. It didn't register .
