In the early '60s, four friends from Liverpool formed a band. But this is not the ‘fab four’ story we know . . .
The Liverbirds, comprising Mary, Sylvia, Valerie, and Pamela, were the first ever all-female Rock'n'Roll band. Despite John Lennon's early skepticism at the Cavern Club, where he declared 'girls don't play guitars,' they embraced the challenge. Within just five short years, they conquered tough crowds at the Star Club, toured stadiums, recorded two hit albums, and collaborated with legends such as the Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and Chuck Berry.
In their newly released book, "The Liverbirds," surviving members Mary McGlory and Sylvia Saunders, share their full and remarkable story. The book, published by Faber on March 14th as both a print and audio version, captures a lost era of liberation and Rock'n'Roll, highlighting their thriving years in the vibrant Merseybeat music scene. It’s also a story of enduring friendship spanning decades.
The Liverbirds made a comeback at the end of 2023, welcoming Molly-Grace Cutler and Lisa Wright, known from the successful Liverpool musical "Girls Don't Play Guitars", as featured artists. The band recorded their new album in Hamburg, where it all began as well as in Brighton. The first single, "Diddley Daddy," is mixed and mastered in thrilling DOLBY ATMOS, promising an exciting experience for fans and audiophiles. The Liverbirds' revival coincides with the resumption of the musical in September 2024.
The Liverbirds are Mary McGlory (bass), Sylvia Saunders (drums), Molly-Grace Cutler (vocals & guitar) and Lisa Wright (vocals & guitar)

I had the pleasure to interview recently the rhythm section of Mary and Sylvia on my channel. Great fun and some fascinating stories about The Beatles, Jim Hendrix, the Stones and Chuck Berry 😎
I'm currently reading their superb book!
That blonde at the front who looks like Brigitte Bardot is so fine. Makes you wonder what became of her and all the other kids, they'd be in their 70s and 80s now. And The Liverbirds are the Queens of Cool, they rocked quite well in their day. Thank you for releasing this enjoyable piece of hidden nostalgia.
Sadly, the lead singer and lead guitarist are no longer with us. The other two have just published a superb book on the group though!

Not only are those kids dancing but they’re also well dressed. Girls wore their best dresses and guys wore ties, but those were different times.
I like it and even had a record with some fine stuff.
Simple but funny 😂🎉🇩🇪😅
Sylvia seems to be having a fab time.
My how music and times have changed
They play good
En 1965 fallait oser se lancer, super ambiance, excellent groupe, une belle surprise,
This is great!
the kids in this music clip look so trendy, thin, and very very happy, and their hairstyles are beautiful.
Germany, 20 years after end of WII. That is, born in wake of WWII.
Toute une époque 😂😊
From this to The Bangles in 20 years....
Fanny was doing the same thing over in the USA so the Bangles most likely were more influenced by them.
Before the Bangles, the Go-Gos, the Pandoras and all those who came after.
Wow, that bassline and hypnotic vibe is totally Velvet Underground...never thought about Bo Diddley with Velvet Underground...here's the missing link...this could go on for another hour easily...ahead of their time!!!!
Oh My god 😮 this is grunge!
The world wasn't ready for them. If they came out @ 1980, they would be better known.
The world wasn`t ready? They played the Beat Club as soon as 1965 and had a single placed Nr. 5 in Germany.
They later decided to call it quits because two of them preferred starting a family.
@@modestoney1577 You're right. They did have a fan base.
Thank you, I'll check out the
book, awesome stuff
Well... I liked it
Sweet stuff.
Bateria estupenda!
The sound/audio they're lumbered with is unfortunate but the drummer is amazing!
The drummers looks and energy remind me of Steve Marriott.
It´s Sylvia Saunders!
@@peterchecksfield9958 You´re right! I deleted the wrong part...
@@Janetsfear First thing I thought when I saw her coiffure! Maybe Steve copied her :) Regardless, she is having a blast on the drums.
When things weren’t structured by control freaks . Not great I. Admit . But they are loving it ❤️
What's not great about this Vlad?
Behave yourself.
This works
Does anyone else notice that the opening guitar riff is identical to Keith´s riff in 19th Nervous Breakdown? 🤔
This is a cover version of a Bo Diddley song the Stones were very much influenced by as well
The Stones got it from the original version by Bo Diddley
yes
Ide love to be able to hear it
You girls are my inspiration
Ach ja, der gute alte Beatclub, noch in Schwarzweiß. Ich bin damals samstags zur Verwandtschaft gepilgert, weil wir noch kein Fernsehen hatten.🏃
Came across this band by chance, the number starts off a bit iffy but stick with it; weirdly it gets under your skin, in a good way, the guitar work is interesting to great.
If you're not keen on the ditty itself, the sound quality is not the best, the video is still worth watching to check out the members in the audience with interesting dance and dress styles plus there's some excellent, albeit unintentional, male gurning thrown into the mix.
Bloody hell! A young Boris Johnson appears at 2:05. Better check your pockets there kids!
When you are a rock and want to roll
Good
Nessa época os beatles e os roling stones tava abafando qualquer grupo 1965
Something about the crowd...I cannot put my finger on it.
Treatments for catatonia in the 1960s were very poor.
Overdancing 😄
Lack of joy?
Pre big pharma destroying our society?
Are they German?
Some of the kids dancing here look like they have just escaped from the chamber of horrors at madam tussauds
Hey they dance like me. lol
I laugh looking at the crowd dancing in this way.
The drummer should be on a skyrizi commercial.
Well, all I can say is that the drummer is kinda cute.
Sweet, newest
They’re doing “The Freddy.”😜
The drummers looks a nutter, a female Keith Moon....
chicks had a good gig...
Curiosity
Thay.were.brlliantt
All those boys and girls in the audience are now dancing away in retirement homes.
Rave !
The background singers are hit and miss - sometimes too flat, other times too sharp.
Howbout Noooooo you crazy bastard 😂
I don’t think the lead guitar is live.
it’s actually hard for me to tell because i’m not a guitar player, but the description lists “Additional guitars by Kerstin Sund”
1:39 you can literally see Val (far left) playing the solo. Zoom in if necessary
Mandela moment
Watching this makes me feel like I've crossed into another timeline; I think I'll take a peek outside and make sure my car hasn't changed to a different model.
I remember it as Mandala.
more totty
Ehhhh did we really like this in the sixties ?
We did because it was everything our parents hated 😂
We went past muzak.
Wow. The Germans sure did have really, really good video and really, really terrible audio. It's a fake.
I don't like liver.
Dreadful.
No son malas. Mas buen son buenas
those kids look like they are being forced to dance at gun point
You know nothing about the early 60s dance era if you think that.
