  • He wrote it when he was 16 and didn’t like it. It remained unfinished and unpublished until 1964 when it became a top 10 international hit.
But the Beatles didn’t record it.

I'm sitting there with my youngest daughter (25 years old) and we're watching that "Get Back" documentary... the episode where Paul McCartney was writing the song "The Long And Winding Road" in the studio with the cameras rolling. He starts off with the first verse written, and he's starting to flesh out the second verse singing "The wild and windy night...something something, something something..." By the end of that episode he's got the song fully done and we're both floored. I look over and she's actually crying. She says "I can't believe I'm sitting here literally watching him create this beautiful masterpiece." The man is a genius.

He was in Jamaica and dinner with Dustin Hoffman who said he didn't believe Paul could write a song about anything, and they pulled out a magazine which had an article about Picasso's death and last words, and Paul sat there with a guitar and wrote "Picasso's Last Words" (from Band on the Run) right in front of him. Dustin Hoffman was blown away and said to his wife "look he's doing it right in front of us!"

Yet again, the Trooper knocks it out of the park (baseball, yes? I'm British so my exuberances would be cricket-related and make no sense!).
You've got this whole spinning the narrative out thing up to mastery lever, Sir Trooper. Six minutes on the edge of my seat this time ... the mounting tension and building excitement ... and it turns out to be a song we all know but about which we have hitherto known next to nothing!
Actually, thinking about it, maybe "knocked it for six" would be an understatement anyway. I'll keep the baseball reference. ;)

McCartney's demo of "World Without Love" shows a different feel to the song. Once the song was in the hands of Peter & Gordon and their producer it was a vast improvement to the song. Definitely not a song for the Beatles. Lennon and Harrison thought the line "Please lock me away" was a joke. Imagine their amazement when the song became a number one song in many countries.

I'm a music artist myself and have produced an epic Christian album which is an American/South African project. I wrote all the songs and melodies, but had it all arranged and produced here using local talent....which is awesome! I might add, that your never too old, or poor to follow your dreams. Our album took us 7 years to complete, but sometimes good things take more time. God is good! By the way, I subscribed to your channel today, and wish you well. Cheers!

Hello from England ~ I was a teenager at the time the Beatles hit the scene. Up until then the most popular songs were mainly solo artists. This radically changed as more and more groups followed in the wake of the Beatles. There was no other group like them! At one point the New Musical Express paper list all top-ten best selling records as Beatles songs (perhaps someone could verify that). The Beatles spearheaded the famous 'British Invasion' and encouraged other groups to follow. The Beach Boys from the 'good ole USA' were a fabulous group much loved and admired by me, who had their own unique style: 'Good Vibrations' was a particular favourite of mine.
