I just met Vaneese Thomas tonight, she’s the daughter of Rufus Thomas and she voice Clio one of the original muses in the 1997 animated Hercules film. I showed her this video. She absolutely loved it! Nothing but praises from her. She even said she’d share it with the other muses!

@@Pootytangtang not necessarily,it's less common for people to not fit the typical masculine/feminine sound to meet with their gender but it's not unheard of, those terms are more based on what sounds feminine(female) and masculine(male)as opposed to the gender of the person....most the singers in the video would be anything from counter-tenors -also refered to as High tenors low contraltos ,tenorinos and many more-(mandatory range e3-e5 and tessitura B3-B4)contraltos(mandatory range F3-F5 and tessitura C#4-C#5) Mezzo-sopranos(mandatory range A3-A5 and tessitura E4-E5)Sopranos(mandatory range C4-C6 and tessitura F#4-F#5),of course you can go with in between voiced but the voice types I formention are the standard feminine sounding voices.....well countertenors would be considered dead centre so a mix of the two /androgynous sound....

Animating the Muses was the most fun I had during 20+ years at Disney. Changing them from the traditional Greek Muses to a gospel chorus girl group was the idea of brilliant Chicago native John Musker (director). The funny thing is they were originally considered the absolutely least important characters in the movie. If I remember there were not any plans to use them other than "Zero to Hero". Meg's song was a troubled production child then the director's decided to add the Muses. Anyway, there have been so many great versions of the Muses over the years. This is one of the most fun and original ever!
Michael Show thank you for your contribution to the film and animation medium. I am an aspiring animator myself. I heard there were tons of different versions of “I Won’t Say.” Do you know who’s idea it was to add the muses? What was your favorite bit to animate in the film?
It must have been such an honor, bringing the Greek characters to life like that! And it's a real honor to come across such a talented artist such as yourself! Was it difficult to animate them?
@@SuaNam08 You heard right, Adrienne. For some reason that I never quite understood "I Won't Say" was not well received during the production screenings. Re-writing, adjusting and and just plain re-doing songs is, as you know, nothing new. In this case it's safe to say the different versions were done in an effort to keep the song from being cut out of the film. Years earlier, on "Pocahontas" there was one sung by Mel Gibson that had been almost completely animated, and it was cut. Anyway, over the months as Hercules continued in production the Muses became increasingly popular in the various screenings. The characters were being sprinkled in throughout the film. One day the directors informed me the Muses had been added to “I Won’t Say" which meant, of course, more re-writes! Who decided? I don't know. What I did know was that the work of the Muses team had just doubled. Yikes! Of course I would say this but I really like the way “I Won’t Say" turned out.
As far as the most fun part to animate? It may seem like a cliche' but it was all fun, lots of work and overtime, but very rewarding. I spent a couple of years animating these singing, dancing women. And I got paid. That's pretty much the definition of a dream job.
@@ButtonedUpBailey Thanks a bunch, Annalee. Difficult to animate? Doing full 2d animation is,... a challenge. Fortunately I love it as much as when I started at CalArts some 40ish (omg) years ago. Actually, more so now then back then. I remember during production being asked what motivated me to keep sitting there for days, weeks, months on end and draw the Muses. Hmm,... I thought, "I get to animate these characters singing and dancing and jumping around and whatever. For an ol' pencil pusher that is a cool job."

Originally they wanted the spice girls to be the muses.
And in Greek plays they usually had a "Chorus" providing narration and commentary (usually set to music) on the events taking place. Disney Hercules made the Muses into a Greek Chorus, and then transformed them into a modern gospel choir!
Considering it was Alan Menken and Howard Ashman it only makes sense. They made Little Shop of Horrors and the Chorus was exactly that. I wouldn't give actual Disney much credit in that decision. In fact, they were against many of Howard Ashman ideas. To mention just one, Disney producers did NOT want the song Part of Your World, they found it too long, and "boring". So...

@@slaptheconsole9301 The things is people were making an outrage about little mermaid being a black woman. Even if the only difference was the colour of her skin. I am pretty sure people would make an outrage if they changed the gender of the muses. Also putting black women with natural hairstyles would be really good for representation. Apart from princess and the frog I don't want them to change the only other representation I have in disney as a black women to men.
@@ellasmith6554 I get that, but one of the reasons there was outrage was that Black Ariel was directly a representation choice, and most people don't like diversity for the sake of diversity. These fellas have already showed off their talent, so to us, they've already auditioned. Now people would DEFINITELY be outraged if the higher ups in Disney said "We want to portray the Muses as men" before they even start casting. They should hire whoever has the best voices and whoever blends best in a group.

Hercules was my boyfriends favorite Disney film and Hunchback was mine. With both these announced to have a remake I’m sure they’ll get toned down. I doubt Disney will keep the Gospel tone of Hercules and the dark Religious themes of Hunchback which is one of their strong points much like Mulans songs having the heart of the film. I hope they don’t go Mulans route with these movies and I hope we get such powerful vocals like this

The nice thing about this is that the Muses are technically goddesses. The gods and goddesses were known for changing their shape (whether to that off the same gender, that of another gender, or even that of another species) so technically, the Muses could be portrayed as men and it'd still be right 😹😹😹

Why would they need to? Yes, they are typically portrayed as women but they don't have to be women. With this being mythology, they could be literally anything and it would work. It doesn't matter what they are as long as they're there.

Having the Muses as black is absolutely historically accurate, especially since it’s believed that even some Greek gods were perceived as dark-skinned (statues were painted and archeologists are learning more and more about this every day)
