The day after Crimea's controversial referendum, in which 97 percent of the peninsula's population supposedly voted to join the Russian Federation, Ukraine's newly-formed National Guard began training in anticipation of further Russian aggression.
Against the backdrop of exploding RPGs, the crackling of heavy machine guns, and the rumbling cannons of the BTRs, Ukrainian officials and the international media got a first look at the ragtag civilian force that could be on the front lines of the new cold war.

i HAVE to respect a journalist that calls a BTR a BTR and not a tank...
VICE, you might be a bit one sided at times, but you sure are one hell of an amazing news source.
They do seem to be exceptionally knowledgeable in comparison to other sources. I personally disagree with the above journalist statement when the soldiers were disassembling AKs - he said "...Pretty complicated..." haha. I believe the contrary to be true, especially with Ukrainian equipment as it is all probably well broken in and easy to manipulate.
"In a war, you must hate somebody or love somebody;
you must have a position or you cannot stand what goes on." -Robert Capa
It's easy to show the side of the ones in power, because it's mostly what you'll see on the telly. Giving a face to victims and people fighting for their voice in their homeland is alot harder.
He also said it had a few big machine guns on top and a cannon inside.
Go figure.
Hahaha same dude.
When someone see a SPG and tell oh look its a tank.
Or smth like that
IDFArmor really tho
This guy is good but please, please bring back Simon!
Simon decided to stay while he's still got a chance for a Russian passport. Stay tuned for his reports on RT.

Its incredible to look 8 years later how much the Ukraine army has IMPROVED, both from a skill pov and from an equipment pov. These guys put all their sould in defending their country, and the results are showing. I hope you may conquer your freedom soon!
Very funny how they are losing badly and at the same time you have no idea of the Russian strategy.
@@drjacob2276 "losing badly" lol look at maps, look at what the Russians say, they were claiming Kiev was gonna fall in 2 weeks...its been 75 days and the lines move towards russia mostly ahhaha
@@drjacob2276 "russian strategy", sure bro, its alla 4D chess move, you gonna win the war like Trump won 2020. Trust the plan blablabla. The Cope is real.
@@freedomordeath89 As I expected, you obviously failed to know the Russian strategy in this war because you falsely got it from Western/Ukrainian MSM lmao. The Northern Front was a diversion and they never said the capital will fall in 2 weeks hence they withdrew (withdraw is different from retreat) and Ukrainians falsely claimed victory when in fact the "Battle of Kiev" never even happened, yet. You know you need to be very careful on where you get your information from or will be heavily misinformed and never get it from the Ukrainians or their allies.

Thank you Vice for reporting :)
very good point he made at the end of this dispatch
One question: why this channel shows mainly one point of view? Why not explain the history of the Crimea and Russia for example?
If you watch all the dispatches you'll see that they actually spend quite a bit of time with pro-Russian supporters in the area. I agree that it's important to know the history of the Crimea but the folks at Vice aren't historians, they're reporters- we shouldn't expect them to do any more than document this event as impartially as possible.
you should probably watch more than one video...also since there's no "official" Russian soldiers in the Ukraine who the fuck do you want them to interview? lol
They could talk about how soviet union forcefully deported and killed Crimea tatars, no?
This channel should be renamed 'VICE Diaries'. Damn, the reports on here are really personal. You guys go the extra mile to report everything, even if may have a bit of a bias. Good job, Ostrovsky, Langston, and whoever else was working on 'Russian Roulette'.
I completely agree. Russian Roulette is an amazing documentary series. The characters of Henry Langston and Simon Ostrovsky make the series ten times better.
love vice and these videos are addicting. huuugggee balls to walking around asking these questions etc.
Thank you for bringing this news.
The beautiful sun at the end, with the dark clouds :)))
When you don't have superiority in weapons, the guerrilla warfare is most effective against the regular armies. US invasion in Vietnam and Soviet invasion to Afghanistan have proven that. We should not fight Russians in the open. Most Ukrainians speak fluent Russian and look exactly like Russians, whereas they can't speak any Ukrainian. It would be a nightmare for them, to be shot at from every rooftop and the war will become very unpopular with Russian public, very quickly, just as Iraq war has become with the US people. The union of Ukrainian Afghan war vets were responsible for security at Maidan, I'm sure there's a lot they can teach about Taliban tactics should things turn nasty.

You better learn some English. There is a very limited number of countries to invade in Europe if the only language you can speak is Russian.
one has to admire the spirit, bravery and grit of the Ukrainians , but lets not kid ourselves, when Mother Russia comes its over.
If the West is willing to send aid in the way of weapons and supplies they might have a shot. I'm not saying to send troops b/c that would just make matters worse for them I think.
steven D'Armetta yeah because we don't have enough problems here already ,,
4 trillion in debt , can't afford to help 3 to 4 million Americans unemployed , but somehow we should afford to pay for and ship weapons to Ukraine ,, Fuck that Bullshit ..
The US is a sinking ship without paddles the Bankers have fucked this country into nothingness It's empty hollow shell just a bunch of politicians talking shit , nobody here gives a shit about the military anymore , we know it's just going to be used on us eventually if and when civil war breaks out once the banks and the Federal reserve finally go belly up..
Im not saying that just the U.S. has to bear this burden. Western Europe will have to pitch in too. We can't afford to not to help b/c then you'll see rogue nations doing whatever they want to b/c they'll think they can get away with it. China is already threatening Japan right now. Another thing, the U.S. military would never turn on civilians they are patriotic boys and girls who would never obey those kind of orders.
steven D'Armetta Sorry but I may soon need those weapons to fight here in the US. They can't have mine.

obama wants europe to fight this one and they are in worse debt then the US,their former empire have diversified and moved away from it like ukraine did to russia.so the only for them to get any funds to fight outside of the US would be by being hypocrites

Could you please stop saying AK-47? It's a *AK-74*.
There are plenty of AK-47's (AKM's) out there -- that first AK at 0:37 is clearly chambered in 7.62x39mm and has a fixed stock, meaning it definitely is not an AK-74. And at 3:41, the four AK's in the forefront are also AK-47's or AKM's, seeing as they are also 7.62x39mm. Same goes for the closeup at 3:49.
He looked at a guy holding a AK-74S then said that it was an AK-47.

"The day after Crimea's controversial referendum, in which 97 percent of the peninsula's population supposedly voted to join the Russian Federation"
you're always distorting facts VICE. less than 80% of the population is eligible to vote. 83% of those came to vote. 97 % of those voted to join the Russian Federation. that amounts to less than 65% of the population, NOT 97%.

Russia: biggest land mass/country yet they want more land, reminds of ww2 when Hitler made his final mistake of trying to capture Russia. How did that turn out?
No, Russia doesn't want more lands. )) But Russia doesn't want to have a dangerous country near - the US tool to harm to Russia. We have 2000 km of common border - free, no any gards. And new ukranian power (hunta) is going to fight with Ukranians not Russia.
Greo999 It's not a "US tool to harm Russia" as you've been told. It's Putin wanting to hurt Ukraine because he's angry at them for siding with EU. The US has never used the Ukraine as a tool to harm Russia before, why would they start now? Whereas Putin has been trying to capture Ukraine for DECADES.... which makes more sense?
***** What do u mean - Putin has been trying to capture Ukraine for DECADES? What for?
The US NEED a civil war in Ukraine to stop gas transit from Russia to EU 1) to harm Russia 2) to make Europe buy an expensive american gas to get resourses for saving dollar system/
Greo999 You're hopelessly washed away in Putin's propaganda. It's a simple fact that Russia has wanted Ukraine back for decades. You bring up all this other shit.
***** then move to russia you fucking brony where they will publicly beat you for being into that shit
Did this dude just call a Kalashnikov a complicated piece of equipment? lol
Good Video. Keep up the good work VICE.
where's the flamethrower? I feel cheated..
when guns shoot you can sometimes see flames coming out the barrel... that doesn't make them flamethrowers lol

This isn't war, this is suicide.
Go, bleed for your country.
Go, fight till your last breath.
Go, die with honor.

Go... See how much good songs and honor will do your rotting corpse.
Go... Fight.
Go... Die.
They will place flowers on your graves, but you will never smell them.
They will dress elegantly to your funerals, but you will never see them.
They will write you poems, but you will never hear them.
Or, just throw down your arms, and live to fight another day, with a bigger army, and better training.
If Ukraine is really as strong as it looks... Labeling it part of Russia wont change it's people. So what if you have to swallow a little bit of pride?
The differens between Russia and Ukraine is that Russia is a dictatorship and not Ukraine
Why do the fucking fascists and communists on youtube think everyone should bend over for Russia? The only reason they like Russia is because it's America's only serious rival.

VICE News whats with the "supposedly" in the description of the video about the result of referendum? It was not a guessing but an official result/outcome.
I would take the figures with a grain of salt. Skepticism is a pre-requisite for good reporting.
Texican Gentry I'm sorry mate but the western media first said:
- the people voted at gun point.
Then they said: the results were falsified.
And later they said: the observers were biased.
If the results were falsified, what's the point of holding the voters at gun point then? And if the observers were biased, then what's the point of falsifying the results?

Are these guys managed to survive from this war and continue their lives till the very present days???
What happened to the dude who did the last 15 dispatches?
He's in Crimea. Ukraine is a big country, so he cannot cover all places.
Crimea was Russian land until Khrushchev gave it away to Ukraine unofficially with no agreement, just because he pitied Ukraine for their much sacrifices against the Nazis and thought they needed a fertile land for farming.
It's obvious that people who've been living in Crimea has always been Russians and pro-Russia. It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out...
I suppose it is apropos for Crimea to be reintroduced to Russia in a similarly ridiculous fashion to its departure. In the long run, it will make little difference to who administers the peninsula, pending Russia does not annex any other areas.
Kons Rav "I'm Russian" What a lie. blow me.
the referendum is illegitimate most of the pro Ukrainians boycotted it...
CornulKill Its legitimate as the international law written. Only NATO supporter says its illegitimate because they want to surround Russia with Ukraine in their hand.
WinterShine7 The referendum was not legitimate, not least because it was not called by the Ukrainian authorities but rather by the powers installed after an equally-illegal act of aggression as determined by the UN Charter to which Russia is a signatory. And it's funny that for generations nobody has said a thing about Khrushchev's handing over that territory being illegal - until now, and because Herr Putin and his apologists are scraping the barrel seeking any reason to excuse the inexcusable. It's fkn pathetic, and outside of the Russian Federation nobody is fooled in the slightest. And when in a few years time the West has found alternatives to Russian energy, as it is now actively seeking to do, and the arse falls out of the rouble the Russians will only have themselves to blame.
I'm not in favor of what the Russians have done, but here's the thing: Much of the national guard is drawn from the Maidan "self-defense" militias and supposedly they will be deployed to southern and eastern Ukraine for "anti-terror" duties. Now we all know this may mean a suppression of the pro-Russian demonstrations, but no critical questions are asked despite this martial display for the press. If those were Russian "self-defense" forces in Crimea or southern/eastern Ukraine, Simon and probably this guy too would have made much more critical comments.
