    The day after Crimea's controversial referendum, in which 97 percent of the peninsula's population supposedly voted to join the Russian Federation, Ukraine's newly-formed National Guard began training in anticipation of further Russian aggression.
    Against the backdrop of exploding RPGs, the crackling of heavy machine guns, and the rumbling cannons of the BTRs, Ukrainian officials and the international media got a first look at the ragtag civilian force that could be on the front lines of the new cold war.

    i HAVE to respect a journalist that calls a BTR a BTR and not a tank...

      They do seem to be exceptionally knowledgeable in comparison to other sources. I personally disagree with the above journalist statement when the soldiers were disassembling AKs - he said "...Pretty complicated..." haha. I believe the contrary to be true, especially with Ukrainian equipment as it is all probably well broken in and easy to manipulate.

      "In a war, you must hate somebody or love somebody;
      you must have a position or you cannot stand what goes on." -Robert Capa
      It's easy to show the side of the ones in power, because it's mostly what you'll see on the telly. Giving a face to victims and people fighting for their voice in their homeland is alot harder.

    When you don't have superiority in weapons, the guerrilla warfare is most effective against the regular armies. US invasion in Vietnam and Soviet invasion to Afghanistan have proven that. We should not fight Russians in the open. Most Ukrainians speak fluent Russian and look exactly like Russians, whereas they can't speak any Ukrainian. It would be a nightmare for them, to be shot at from every rooftop and the war will become very unpopular with Russian public, very quickly, just as Iraq war has become with the US people. The union of Ukrainian Afghan war vets were responsible for security at Maidan, I'm sure there's a lot they can teach about Taliban tactics should things turn nasty.

    you're always distorting facts VICE. less than 80% of the population is eligible to vote. 83% of those came to vote. 97 % of those voted to join the Russian Federation. that amounts to less than 65% of the population, NOT 97%.

    Crimea was Russian land until Khrushchev gave it away to Ukraine unofficially with no agreement, just because he pitied Ukraine for their much sacrifices against the Nazis and thought they needed a fertile land for farming.

    • @dunholm1
      @dunholm1 10 лет назад +4

      WinterShine7 The referendum was not legitimate, not least because it was not called by the Ukrainian authorities but rather by the powers installed after an equally-illegal act of aggression as determined by the UN Charter to which Russia is a signatory. And it's funny that for generations nobody has said a thing about Khrushchev's handing over that territory being illegal - until now, and because Herr Putin and his apologists are scraping the barrel seeking any reason to excuse the inexcusable. It's fkn pathetic, and outside of the Russian Federation nobody is fooled in the slightest. And when in a few years time the West has found alternatives to Russian energy, as it is now actively seeking to do, and the arse falls out of the rouble the Russians will only have themselves to blame.

  • @JackTheCarver
    @JackTheCarver 10 лет назад +5

    I'm not in favor of what the Russians have done, but here's the thing: Much of the national guard is drawn from the Maidan "self-defense" militias and supposedly they will be deployed to southern and eastern Ukraine for "anti-terror" duties. Now we all know this may mean a suppression of the pro-Russian demonstrations, but no critical questions are asked despite this martial display for the press. If those were Russian "self-defense" forces in Crimea or southern/eastern Ukraine, Simon and probably this guy too would have made much more critical comments.
