    I love that you tried dimpling. Retired toolmaker from a grain bin manufacturer here and we dimpled a lot of 12 gauge material. Steps and transitions mostly. We used a dimple up, dimple down pattern to eliminate water better. Ice was an issue in our area. I used an Enerpac hydraulic press for R and D purposes, but an arbor press would work and you seem like a guy that needs an arbor press around. Great video

    Tyler, may I offer a suggestion? I am a recently retired mechanical engineer and specialized in industrial and aviation production. When you get ready to perform the dimpling you may want to put a light coat of lubricant where the sheet metal contacts the dimple tooling. It helps to prevent the deformation of the hole that was evident in your video. Also, an additional benefit of dimpling sheet metal is that it helps to prevent cracking at the hole. Job well done, brother.

    Great stuff Tyler! It's been too long since we had one of your tool (and die!) reviews. I enjoy your fabrication videos as much as your cattle ones. You have a teacher hidden just below the surface of the hard working farmer. 😊

    My Dad was a Tool and Die Maker at Federal Mogul in Fresno when I was VERY young. His work was to perfection, because the product HAD to be. I think he was the supervisor. Just saying.

    I have never seen these before and would be happy to learn what they do good? Why is a simple cut out hole not good enough? It is said they give strength. But how/why? Thank you for teaching me?

    • @garethmcrae668
      @garethmcrae668 9 месяцев назад

      Think of how much stronger and less floppy a piece of sheet steel is with a simple fold in it. Imagine a 360⁰ fold- you have a dimpled hole!

    If you’re using vice, one hit with a sledge in the end of the vice once you’ve “bottomed out” will set the last bit and remove the rebound

    Different FTR post! Interesting and seems to function as advertised. I agree, an Arbor Press should work well on a small scale. Good post!

  • @tjw4947
    @tjw4947 Год назад

    A simple frame built from some left over C - Channel and a small (2 - 4 ton) bottle jack would make forming these even easier than an arbor press. It would be a whole bunch quicker than using the vise.
