Great job on the dimple die. That's a well thought out setup and awesome that it uses inner bearing races! I gotta go through my old parts bins for bearings and go buy some big washers. I can't wait to build one. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this great idea! I work as a mechannic in a car shop and i use to trow the old bearings away. Now i will keep some for my self for future projects. Great simple trick! The race only breaks under heavy pressure or when you press it in crooked in something...in a plate you will be fine i guess.
Great idea for a one-off project that you don't wish to second mortgage you house to buy a dimple set for. Most axial ball bearings will have an inner race with the radius necessary to make a decent dimple. As you say, the process is somewhat time consuming, but a cheap way to make headway on a one-off project. Good video!

Pretty awesome idea for someone in a pinch that may not ever use a dimple die set again. If you plan on doing this sort of work over and over again a proper dimple die set is the way to go. Doing these is a slow process to begin with. You're setup would drag it out much much longer. However like I said this is an awesome idea for many people that will more than likely only do this sort of work once or only need one side of die for a project. BTW. don't be scared to talk in your videos man. Just be you and don't worry about the people in the comments. If the videos are go they will keep coming back regardless of what you sound like. Doing these videos has helped my stage fright tremendously.

This is EXACTLY what I've been trying to do (flange/die holes) in aluminum. it just bugs the dickens out of me that you pretty much have to have a AMEX gold card to do anything these days (related to hot roding)... I'm pretty sure in the 40s,50's and 60's the only thing they had was their imagination and whits about them. Thank you for taking the time to video tape this and add the details. Actually if you put "trailer ball dimple die" in google you will see some others but some make mistake not welding washer onto trailer ball to squeeze the plate flat so after it stays deformed.
i know what Ill be doing with my old bearings now.. I have a full set of dimple dies already but they are not hardened and are showing it. the races will never show wear marks. some electrical tape wrapped afew times around there would stop stray metal if it did shatter. I doubt it would though if it was pushing straight.
To soften the ball race, don't weld it, that creates cracks. Heat it to a dull red color and leave it too cool down over night in Dry Sand . It will remove the brittleness that really hard steel has.

This procedure shtould also Strain Harden ( 316 sheet) the msterial. The curves and bends add ridgedness but would not Strain hardeninng be even more added strength? I am guessing. I Would like learn about the Work Hardening ( aka strain hardening) Improvements to a structrual shape using your tool.

You could anneal the the steel.. It will not be as scratch resitant any more but much safer to use..
