Gohan's character development has parallels with the, "Distress of Arjuna" in the Bhagavad-Gita, also known as Arjuna's dilemma. Both Gohan and Arjuna had the potential and duty to inflict great violence in the name of what's right. Both loathed to even think of being violent or taking a life. Both had to be convinced that this stance wasn't the morally superior one, but a form of cowardice.
I highly recommend anyone read the Bhagavad-Gita and the Mahabharata as a whole. They're among the greatest works of poetry and storytelling of all known time. Easwaran's translations and commentary are of high quality.

It's... a little weird, though. I don't recall anything in either the original series OR the Abridged series leading up to this that implied Gohan was *unwilling*, only that he *disliked it*. And how much you enjoy it isn't something you get to decide. Perhaps I'm simply not remembering parts of Abridged where this was established, though?
I've always loved how Cell was always very sympathetic to Yamcha. He knew that Yamcha was trying his best while knowing he was weak as all hell.
Also can't ruin the half-time entertainment.
It's not just that. Remember how Yamcha unalived himself in Future Trunks' timeline? That must have happened in Cell's, too.

Also, Yamcha is normal human who taught himself to fly with sheer force of will. He's easily in the top 10 most powerful human beings one earth. He just spends all his time hanging out with god-like aliens.

Why is nobody talking about that Mr Satan scene? They took a character who was pretty much entirely a joke and gave him a great hero moment. This man ran directly towards the greatest danger anyone on earth has ever faced on a *chance* that it would save the world. That's true courage right there, and the small speech about his daughter was genuinely cool and endearing

@@Hieillua Well, that is justice. This is still a parody and they could've made the scene funny. I've seen comments about making this (and the Goku turning SSJ scene) being made comedic like a throwback joke involving Icarus dying cuz of Cell because people seem to like "not very well aged throwbacks". But instead, they made it just as serious as the show though more harsh yet true to Gohan.
I legit believe this is the reason why this took so long. They wanted to get it right. And I am so glad they did.
I just realized that when cell says “we both know he never had a soul”, it’s cause he’s ginger, and a robot. Wow.

As a kid I cheered for Gohan in this fight. His transformation was catharsis.
As a father, with a kid who is now Gohan's age at the start of Z, I weep for Gohan's loss of innocence.
This is the sad beauty of this scene. Gohan's just a kid. But a kid isn't going to save the world. They need serious Gohan. They need a hero.

@@ghostly_number Not this Cell. Remember that this Cell comes from a timeline, where Yamcha killed himself, so no Yamcha DNA.
Not only that, because in Episode 43, when they (Z Fighters) feel Cell's energy for the first time, they don't feel Yamcha.
So the only explanation for Cell's niceness is Goku cells, because, when Future Trunks explains his backstory in Episode 34, Goku notices Trunks didn't mention Yamcha, and after learning Yamcha kills himself, Goku says to Yamcha: ''You're my friend''.
So, that sums up my comment.
heli572 Yamaha killed himself after he found out Bulma was pregnant, cell was created before then as dr gero had no knowledge of namek, the surveillance ended with the Saiyan fight, so most likely they were all analysed at one of the wma tournaments and at the fight of the Saiyans/Raditz for goku
I always assumed the fact that they didn't sense Yamcha's energy is because Gero didn't feel it necessary to use; he probably figured there wasn't a part of Yamcha that couldn't be done better by somebody else. Ultimate kick to his pride: he wasn't even important enough to steal DNA from. That's my read, anyway.
Cell soesnt have krillian or yamchas dna, neither were considered to be a threat worth cloning.

Gohan's age is literally the entire point. He's inexperienced. A child. Yet he believed himself to be *better* than all of the adults around him, trying their hardest to protect the world. He needed a reality check. He was no better than his father, mentor, friends, or family for sticking to his guns. He was WORSE than them because he CHOSE to do nothing even though he KNEW he had the power to stop Cell.
Quit pretending you've never thought to yourself that some children need to be told to grow up. Fortunately, Gohan is a fictional character, so it isn't that deep. But there are REAL children right now in this world who struggle harder than any man to survive by any means necessary. Keep in mind that Gohan's actions are a slap in the face to anyone who wasn't wholly sheltered and coddled their whole damn lives. Not everyone has the luxury of going to therapy every time the world throws them a curveball, dude. In fact, MOST people NEVER get the means to seek psychological evaluation for the trauma they've endured. Gohan was the only person on the planet capable of defending it from destruction, minus MAYBE his father(although, we know now that Goku stood no chance). 16 just pointed out what Gohan was already thinking.
The real question is, how immature do YOU have to be to miss the point the entire series was leading up to so completely?

I just love how Piccolo is more of a father figure than Goku in this moment.
They managed to turn 3 seaons of material between Piccolo and Gohan into character development that paid off in that moment.
piccolo never asked him what he liked either, it's probably just because dbza goku is a bit slow and never picked up on it like he did
@@dankerbell True, but it's a good story telling moment because it shows that Piccolo is a better father than Goku. It caps off all that character development in a way that also advances the plot. It's very good writing.
That's ironic as hell, considering that he was the one who officially introduced Gohan to the world of life or death fights. I'm surprised people don't mention that simple fact as much as how Goku realizes that his son doesn't like fighting via Piccolo telling him.

I honestly can't believe how effective that ending is. CHILLS every time I watch it.
this version of cell is literally my favourite character in fiction, feels like a perfect blend of goku vegeta and frieza that he was inteneded to be. The anime did him well ofc but i feel dbza made him that idea of him more clear by making him less like frieza and basically more like the evil goku he is supposed to be.

I've watched this a 100 times by now. But finally it's clicked for me: Gohan was indeed triggered by anger, but I used to think it was anger at Cell. But I realise now, as an older man, that Gohan's rage found its target when 16 opened his eyes. His rage was at his own cowardice. Recognizing that his pacifism isn't so noble rather cowardice in disguise, it removed the last hint of moral hesitation he had about unleashing his anger. TFS is absolutely genius.

@@leobastian_ fair point - but as the History of Trunks illustrated, Gohan never had a chance to be a child, he was forced to grow up quickly. The only one who really tried to make him have a childhood was Chi Chi, and she failed - every time she sat him down to read a book, someone would squire him away to another fight for the fate of the world.
Gohan has lived a tough life, childish pursuits were never in his life. He was forced to grow up early, so you have to talk to him as such.

For real though!
Compared to the OG version of DBZ and not Kai, almost every major scene that they redid, did better in my opinion. Goku's SSJ transformation and Krillin's death scene were like "Wow I actually liked that better than Sean Schemmel's version, and Kirllin's cry for Goku seemed as good if not better than Kai's version of it." It totally shits on the OG version too. I totally loved Abridged Frieza, and how his voice is pretty much identical to Dragon Ball Super's version of Frieza, and Kai if I'm not mistaken? Either way I feel bad they didn't get to do the Buu Saga, like at all except some made up, yet convincing, story and intermissions of between Cells death and were the show picks up normally. Goten's birth was awesome, especially at the end when Goku got a chance to see him from Otherworld. Creativity like that is what made this Abridged version so much better to me, they paid more attention to Toriyama than he did him self, and he was known to forget a lot of things too lol. Sorry for the ramble but more thoughts came in as I was typing that felt like good points to make about how the show really does the critical moments their justice.
I grow up with the Latin dub, so I can share that feeling, but i gotta say that i liked this more like the OG English dub.

@@rainmaker9715 Yes. While it was doubtful the finale would ever be truly bad, even the team at TFS expressed multiple concerns that the potential end of the series could be a let down. So the fact that we weren’t just given’t the standard 20-30min episode but an entire 60+ 4part series finale that blew our expectations out of the water is absurd.
I’m honestly glad the series ended with episode 60. It would have been cool to see TFS do the Buu Saga, maybe even eventually dip into GT or Super but ultimately I think they made the right call. We’d either be waiting through insanely long hiatus periods to get ep60 levels of quality OR everything after would be a downgrade.
