This is from Nitecore NB10000 FAQs: Ther is only one blue indicator blinking whenever I tap the button an I just charged it. The NB10000 enters a hidden reset mode after its mode button is held down for a prolonged time (10 - 15+ seconds) Charge it again for 10+ minutes and the power bank will wake up and work properly. I would plug it into your other power bank for a few minutes to see if it wake up.

So excited watching this. This section to me is exciting and a huge test of endurance, I love the challenge and being out there with no choice really but to carry on somehow and eventually you will start descending down to the highway. I love being cut off out in the wilderness and I cant wait to get back to the PCT.

Y'all did great! Twelve miles uphill in snow is a good day, especially in trail runners that don't provide the support that boots give on snow. When you find a short slope with a steep angle, drop your pack and pull out your ice axe and do a few practice falls, it's the only way to get the self arrest movement pattern in your body-kind of like learning advanced cha-cha turns or West Coast Swing. 4-5 practice slips will have you traveling with confidence.
Practice: Slide on your back, double grip your axe across your chest, one hand on the head and the other low on the handle, roll to your front, contract your midsection with your knees in the snow and keep your feet off the snow (don't want to catch a spike in the snow and end up cartwheeling), last step is just arching the back to put as much pressure on the ace until you stop. Add your pack to this practice to get a feel for the time needed. Lastly, don't panic and don't lose your towel (oops, wrong book!).

You guys are doing great! - The thing about decomposed granite on slopes is that it can be almost as frictionless as ice. If the rocks are a couple millimeters across it's like walking downslope on ball bearings.

Regarding your nitecore power bank situation: A reviewer on Amazon said if the mode button is pressed more than 10 seconds, the battery will be completely disabled until the next time you charged it. I guess the mode button was accidentally pressed more than 10 secs while it was in your backpack.

I don’t like heights either, but I started rock climbing so I can get used to the vertigo feeling I get and it has built so much confidence it really helps when I am hiking on ledges and such. I don’t guess it would help me at all with slippery snow ledges though!! 😮

Batteries don’t like cold, cheap ones like it even less. The PCT is much harder than the AT, you did as much work today as you did going up Katahdin on the AT. Also the altitude gets to you as you tire quickly, sun is hotter too, thank goodness it has not been windy. Winds can hit over 100 mph on those peaks (think Mt Washington wind speeds) so pay close attention to weather. So far ya’ll are besting everything thrown at you. Next resupply you might consider some light gloves to keep your hands safe.

Lithium battery can't handle cold, Lithium batteries depending on manufacturer or without built in heaters cannot handle cold weather, keep in sleeping bag. Optimal temp range of Lithium is 14°F to 122°F, cold weather zaps them.

You need to get on a safe slope and practice sliding and arresting your fall using the ice axe. Training is needed. You have to be instinctive in use of the ice axe, roll onto your belly and hold the axe at shoulder level, high up your body so that the point digs in and then your body weight hangs off it as tge point digs in to stop you. All done in a split second for it to be effective.

    • @larkangel6593
      @larkangel6593 6 месяцев назад

Exactly. These AT hikers try to psyche themselves up with "but it has more elevation gain/loss".
Get outta here. The PCT is the real deal, comparable to - or perhaps exceeding - the Alps for real alpine mountaineering.
And as everyone keeps saying, just wait for the Sierra.
(There was an AT YT hiker last year who got schooled hard and quit.)
RR, you've got the physical/mental ability to do this. Just adjust your expectations and realize you're in for a fight.
Oh, and beg Plus One to stay with your group.

    • @hikingdancer

      @hikingdancer  6 месяцев назад

I appreciate the encouragement. I really do. Have you hiked the AT? Parts? The whole thing? Just curious. Do you have any cool feedback with regard to the Sierra. Something besides “just wait for the Sierra?” We always got the “just wait for the Whites” and it just wasn’t really helpful. Once we successfully did the Whites, it was “just wait for Southern Maine”. I dunno. It’s just not that helpful, but if you did the Sierra I really would love some tips and tricks. It’s definitely often on our minds and I really would love some good info from someone who’s actually done the entire section. Thank you 🤗

I'm a classic west coast snob. I love above tree line (above 11k)
I hate trees - not really, just in the context of the High Sierra.
The best resource is High Sierra Topix. I posted a number of trail reports back in the day.
You guys will be fine. The name of the game is to get going by 3-4am. Just make sure you have a good headlamp and back up batteries.
Another good resource is the Whitney Zone. If you're morbid, I posted a report years back on a fatality (we had photos of the vic ascending)

'San Jacinto' , a beautifully atmospheric song by Peter Gabriel
    San Jacinto Lyrics
    [Verse 1: Peter Gabriel]
    Thick cloud, steam rising
Hissing stone on sweat lodge fire
    Around me, buffalo roam
Sage in bundle, rub on skin
    Outside, cold air
    Stand, wait for rising sun
    Red paint, eagle feathers
    Coyote calling, it has begun
    Something moving in
I taste it in my mouth and in my heart
    It feels like dying, slow
    Letting go of life
Shaboozey 'Vegas' Official Lyrics & Meaning | Genius Verified
[Interlude: Peter Gabriel & Jill Gabriel]
    (Hyena wakan tanka)
    (Hyena wakan tanka)
    (Hyena wakan tanka)
    (Hyena wakan tanka)
    (Hyena wakan tanka)
    (Hyena wakan tanka)
    [Verse 2: Peter Gabriel]
Medicine man lead me up through town
    Indian ground, so far down
Cut up land, each house a pool
Kids wearing water wings, drink in cool
    Follow dry river bed
Watch Scouts and Guides make pow-wow signs
    Past Geronimo's disco
Sitting Bull steakhouse, white men dream
A rattle in the old man's sack, see
Look at mountain top, keep climbing up
Way above us the desert snow
    White wind blow
    [Bridge: Peter Gabriel]
    I hold the line
    The line of strength
That pulls me through the fear
    San Jacinto
    I hold the line
    San Jacinto
    The poison bite
    And darkness take my sight
    I hold the line
And the tears roll down my swollen cheek
Think I'm losing it, getting weaker
    I hold the line
    I hold the line
    San Jacinto
Yellow eagle flies down from the sun
    From the sun
    [Outro: Peter Gabriel]
We will walk on the land
We will breathe of the air
We will drink from the stream
We will live, hold the line
Hold the line, hold the line
We will live, hold the line
Hold the line, hold the line

A young Native American undergoes the trials of a Coming of Age ritual, in which a medicine man leads him up into the mountains and purposefully subjects him to a rattlesnake bite. The youth can only earn his place as a brave by making it back from the wilderness.
The San Jacinto mountains overlook Palm Springs, California. Here, the exclusive resort community contrasts with the poor Native American communities on the other side of the mountains. As the young man begins his journey, he passes a world in which his culture has been appropriated as a whimsical novelty for the enjoyment of affluent white people.
In “San Jacinto,” the young man is not just carrying himself through the trial and out of the wilderness. He is also metaphorically carrying his heritage through a cultural wilderness where it too could die.
