- This is a step-by-step detailed video on restoring your door panels. We replace the backing board and carpet, and add in new clips and door handle cups.
This video is LONG, but for good reason, I spare no detail and walk you through what it takes to make these weathered, molded, crusty door panels on my 86 look like new! Кино
I'm looking at having to do the same process on my 85 convertible. I will definitely use this video as a guide....great job.
Thanks. Yessir. These IMO came out great and still look great IMO. Good luck with your build.
Thanks for the video Mike. A few hours if work and my door panels look new. Awesome 😎
Love hearing this. Glad it could help you out.
Just watched the whole thing. Awesome detailed video. Need to do my 88 drivers!
Glad it helped Bill. This was ont of the most satisfying jobs I've done on the car.
Original style door panels for my 86 from LMR are now about $1K. I paid a local upholsterer (my originals had hole-sawed speaker holes from a previous owner) for custom Alcantara touches so I'm in the ballpark. But if you're staying original--and the vinyl isn't trashed--rebuilding is the way to go.
Yeah man....hate when big holes are cut everywhere for speakers
My door panels got ruined a couple of years ago during an East Texas Monsoon. Thanks for posting this video
You are welcome, glad it could be of some help.
The panels look super - boring it wasn't, slow in spots, but in the right spots. Super Job! My Fox Body is next. Thanks for sharing.
Pretty much sums up ALL my videos lol Glad it helped you out.
Killer video . My door panels look horrible and I didn't have a clue where to start now I'm ready to order parts and get started. And it wasn't boaring it was very educational . Good work
Awesome video. You've shown me enough that I might want to farm this out to an upholstery shop.
I know what I am doing next on my foxbody. Great job brother. Go Cowboys!!! I saw the sign in the background.
Right on! Appreciate it man!
Great video! I’ve had everything to rebuild the panels on my ‘91 LX for several months but have been putting it off. I was hesitant due to not looking forward to figuring out how the boards attached to the metal top. I certainly didn’t want to ruin mine and have to cough up that $500+ bucks for replacements. Thanks for taking the plunge and providing us all the video.
to install the new inner door belt molding LMR uses screws now. no more staples for inner door belt moldings. great job my man.
That cutting disc on a dremel is the trick to cutting stainless braided fuel line. Wrap the fuel line tight with electrical tape , cut through it , Peel tape carefully and you have a very nice tight cut with no pieces to fight with when installing into whatever fitting your using.
I think I'd rather sell a lung!! Nice job, u must have the patients of a saint.👍👍👍
They look amazing! I'm so happy for you man! I've been wanting to do my 89 convertible door cards for years.. you did a great job and inspired me again! I'm definitely going to do em this summer. ✌️
Heck yeah! Not that bad, takes time and patience but anyone can do it! good winder project. A lot can be done indoors too.
@@HOUSEOFDULA good point!
Your video really helped me with redoing my own door panel. Thanks!!
Awesome! Glad It helped!
You called this a boring video and I have to DISAGREE with you. Your explanation is second to none! I live in Hutto, Texas which is just 30 miles north of Austin, Texas. I would like to bring my 89 Mustang GT and meet you in person. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of your 86 Mustang GT Project and keep up the great work!
Thanks Richard, listening to my own voice especially after spending hours editing a 1 hour video makes me wonder some times why anyone would watch these! lol
I really appreciate the kind comment, if your ever in the DFW area let me know!
Very good job.. I’m so glad someone has posted a video of this process
Thank you sir!
Keep up the great work man! Lookin great!
Appreciate it!
Great job Mike, Keep up the great work!!
Great video!
I didn’t find it boring at all, i like these detailed videos as they give me a nice heads up for what I might expect when doing my door panels.
Thanks!!
Appreciate that sir! Good luck on your, mine still look like new.
Great video! Thanks for toiling through the anatomy of a door panel. I've got the LMR boards to restore my '85 panels (identical to yours). One thing I will probably add to the project is to apply marine epoxy around all the clip holes and switch openings. That press board stuff is weak and brittle with time. I figure it's a good idea to shore up those edges, since everything snaps in or holds onto them.
No, your video is not boring i watch the whole video is a one of the best how to do video i seen. I always wonder if there was a way to fix or rebuild those panel without having to buy those expensive replacements.
Thanks for the video. Made fixing my panels way easier!
It's not boring at all man, good work.
Looks great I did mine on my 90. I went a little overboard and took out my window guide rods and polished them so the windows went up and down smooth. I also added new moisture barrier and sound deadener. It made a huge difference so I know how you feel. Great video thanks for all the content.
Thats not overboard, that actually more proper lol. My rails need polished and new guides. A vapor barrier I think on a vert and t-top is almost essential and I didnt even mention it. Being that the car is garaged helps...But most would want that as well as the sound deadener installed too.
I also replaced the deadener and moisture barrier while I was in there. It is a great time to do it makes a big difference.
That really is a labor of love. I would have no patience, lol. Good job bro, time for a beer.
Looks super good man, love that fox!!
Very very nice your car has came a long way excellent work as always cheers man
I probably should have done this to my panels when I replaced the window guides last winter. You're right, the particle board gets trashed from Ttop water leaks. Being I'm going to need to get back in there to do some glass adjustments...after replacing those SOB door pins,.I may elect to do this to mine.
I believe the fabric side will be a little different on the 87-88 Ttops, but overall, I think the process will be the same with the metal and wood.
I seen those years stamped on the back of mine too...12-3-86. was like looking at a time capsule.
Thanks for posting this, great work!
Thanks for giving us such a detailed video. Much appreciated and will use the info in the future.
You bet! Hopefully helps others out.
Great work Mike, like new from the factory!
Love the video, I'm restoring my 87 notchback☺
Awsome step by step. I’m ready to take on my 85
Heck yeah! Was a learning experience for sure. Lost a lot of patience on the passenger side door. Driver side was a breeze. Confident anyone can do this job.
Damn good job! I have to do this to my front panels as well. My cardboard is monkd up as well
You did a fantastic job man 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻😁👍🏻
I have a 86 stang GT Cobra medium Canyon red. I am the original owner. That looks great just like from the factory. Good for you. My map pocket sags but everything else is in decent shape. If I ever have the need to do this now I know how. patience patience patience Thanks
Naw in all seriousness you did a bang up job dude, like you said it was a tedious time consuming job but will bring the old girl closer to original condition. I purchased a brand new of the lot 86 mustang Lx notchback charcoal grey in colour, identical interior as yours and the only trouble I ever had was the cruise control stopped working but was a ten dollar fix and the paint on the engine bonnet was peeling of. Ford motor company went good for it after owning the car for five years, sort of wish I hadn't sold it after watching you bring this car back to where it should be. Have fun !
Appreciate it man!
Awesome job bro 👍
Nicely done!
Great video! This tutorial gives me the confidence to redo my panels! Thanks!
Awsome job!!
Great job! love your vids
It was boring. But I watched it end to end. Lol. Thanks, bro. I'll be using this video when I get to the interior part of my car.
Awesome job!
nice you did a real good job
Looks great. 👍🏻
Great video
great job going to do mine
Good job 👏🏻
Thanks Chris
Enjoy those cold ones u deserve them after that great upholstery job!
The bigger cutout on the door panel is likely for the convertible. There are 5 switches on the driver door switch.
Funny...I mention this but cut it out to save time since the video was so long. I assumed it was for "extra" switches, likely for the a vert or something.
Great video! Nobody shows these things.
Thank you sir,
Thanks my 83 GT has the same issue.
that looks so much better great job upholstery is tedious work that 3m glue is awesome but you gotta spray both materials to be glued and let it tack up for like 5-10 mins and will never come apart also ive had to cut down half inch staples before it sucks lol but i was out of quarter inch ones
Good to know about the glue, ive always had good luck with it holding, wish i knew about spraying both sides. That stuff gets everywhere, floor, shoes, hands lol
@@HOUSEOFDULA ya it's a pain in butt to get off too acetone works well I use old piece of cardboard as a shield for overspray
Use washer under the head of rivet to keep from pulling through the panel material
Nice job......
How do the speakers sound? Great video! I’m about to take my door panels apart.
I had to replace the weather stripping on my 85 gt it was very brittle...anywho nice panels ....
Awesome job... I have an 89 and I'm going to try and salvage my panels... they are really only bad around the speakers, and I'm hoping the speaker grill will hold it together. One question: Did you have any issue with the rivets thru the felt touching the window glass? I'm sure they stick out more than the factory staples.
I watched it all because I need to do this to my 86 TTop. The problem I have is my vinyl isn’t in good shape. Trying to find a video on how to do that part or all custom for the 86 Fox.
Hey seems like you had some project. It seems possible to use a set of manual door panels if you just make the hole bigger where the crank would be and put the switch in. Is that true?
Also worth a shot, but if you had put a rivet in from the metal side, through the backer, and into a washer, it would have held without breaking thru the cardboard backer.
Ive riveted plastic to metal doing this. Im doing my panels tomorrow and have already sourced my tiny washers lol
When do we get to look forward to some boost?
What kind of staples did you use what size
I like your car
Are those door lock and power window switches OEM in the OEM locations? I was thinking about adding power to my 1982 and wondered what OEM looks like
Yes they are. 100% stock.
I wonder how a piece of panaling would work instead of the cardboard?
I need the Mirror Rubber for my 83 Ford Mustang convertible
Do you have to remove the vinyl? Or can you just replace the backing board?
Well the vinyl is adheresd to the backing board you need to remove it to affix it to the the replacement panel.
Wow can I ask you a question I've been watching your videos & they're awesome may I ask what do you do for a living if you don't mind me asking because you make the work you do in the videos look so easy
No its cool. Ive been in I.T. since I was 18, so 20 years now, Im a server admin for a company in Fort Worth. My dad was never a car guy, didnt care much for them, cars have been a love of mine since before I could talk, so anything car related for me is self taught.
@@HOUSEOFDULA sweet man I've watched your videos one would think you grew up around car
My door panels are in decent shape but I would like to recolor them black. Does it turn out good?
Yes if you use quality vinyl dye like SEM and prep the vinyl it works very well.
@@HOUSEOFDULA thanks bro wanted to hear from someone who has seen it. I have that cyan blue or whatever it's called interior. Wanted to paint the car silver with black interior. Think blue would be wierd lol
You should do a conversion of the headlights to led
Funny you mention, this is actually in the works as we speak! should have something out on it in a week or 2.
HOUSE OF DULA great, really looking forward to it. Your channel should be much more appreciated.
I was with you till LM R showed up ! they always mess up my orders ..my MOTO is ANYONE bur LMR......came out nice how many hrs from start to finish ????????
Id say a solid 6 to 8 for both panels. About 4 hours each. LMR has never messed up anything Ive ever ordered from them...I know I sound like I sponsor them or something, I dont! lol I tried though, Asked if they we're looking for you tube creators to sponsor. They sponsor Foxcast Media, but denied me for the year. But I talk them up because they are local(ish) and never let me down.
well sometimes it work out for some but not for others ...10 orders 9 mistakes so I don't deal with them unless I cant find the part some where else . I don't order like 5-8 parts ill order like 30 to 40($200-$400) parts big and small parts and its always wrong for me . the order sheet and the part numbers on the package don't match each other as well?? they don't know what I ordered and I don't know what I received ..................its good to hear others having luck with them .doors came out great nice job on them.....
You probably should use a towel or mat over your work bench to protect the vinyl side of the door panel while you're maneuvering it back and forth.
Wooooooooooooooooo
I need your address so I can send u mines!!! Look good Brother! Goodjob!
Haha, easy to do man!
Uno!!
like new.
just the tip and only the tip.
Lol nice arrow observation
From what I witnessed on this video was to minimize the amount of times you jab your hand with a screwdriver or with any sharp tool you may be using. lol
Hey! One jabbed once! But yes, many of ways to stab/cut yourself in this job. Probably should wear gloves lol
How do I get motherfucking door handle back on
Haha, man you take off the cup or the whole handle? Only the inside door handle cup comes off, one screw, putt out handle a little and slide the cup off. The outside hande is rivited or screwed on.
