From the UK - re the sunflower lanyard, I wear mine during my work commute, at church, round shops etc. - having the lanyard does mean people will (sometimes) ask if you need help. Also useful if due to your hidden disability, you need to use disabled-accessible facilities, certain seats on public transport etc. Helps to spread awareness. And nudge people into having a bit of patience - it’s not that I can’t do stuff, I just might be slower at it than other people.
I can't believe that, after watching dozens of videos on packing for travelling, this is the first one where wet wipes are mentioned. They are essential to me. I carry them with me all year round.
Hey, very frequent traveller here. Just found out recently that I'm ND. I do all the same things you do, but here some additional tips: - lightly shaded sunglasses, the light on planes is too bright at times - sleeping mask - own pillow for night flights Also regarding the backpack: I have tried many solutions for hand luggage, but my favourite by far is a backpack trolley, that I can keep on my back when I need my hands free, or have to run, but can roll it most of the time.
@@anna-marianunezvega1520 All great suggestions. I like having a baseball cap for flights for the overhead light situation for sure. Do you bring a special travel pillow? The Trtle (Turtle) looks like it could be handy. Never heard of backpack trolley! Will have a look :)
@@BetterNeurodivergentTravel I have the "outdoorer Runway-33 Trolley Backpack" it has real skater rolls, so it is very smooth and quiet. Travel pillow I actually have a small memo foam pillow that was sold as travel pillow at Aldi. It is like my big side sleeper pillow, so I find it soothing. I only travel business class on long flights, so I don't really use the typical neck pillows anymore (and I never really liked them much). But I think the "Sleeperhold" pillow looks exciting for Economy class / car / bus travel
I googled it and yes, it looks very practical. Memory foam sounds comfy. LOL at the shirtless guy trying to sleep with the 'traditional' travel pillow on Sleeperhold website :D I have heard of it and it's tempting. I can see it being useful on coach journeys too.

I immediately subscribed! I am autistic traveler mainly by train and bike. I even have studied tourism but wasnt able to finish my degree. But I still love to travel and people are always amazed I am able to. For me it comes down to a good preparation. I use a bullet journal.. schedules, reservation numbers, what to do when, ice (in case of emergency) etc. Some things that I bring: 1. I always bring a fidget toys or something to fidget with. 2. Sunglasses and/or a hat.. 3. I also bring meal replacement bars because I don't like eating out especially when overwhelmed. 4. A foldable backpack as well as a foldable cup. Another note: The sunflower lanyard works mainly in airports (I rarely fly) and is not recognized by a lot of countries or companies. For example In the netherlands it is somewhat recognized but not in Germany. Do you do bigger trips for leisure or work? How did you get into traveling?
Wow! I am so glad you found my channel! Agree, good preparation is key, though you are much more organized than I am (I think it's my ADHD). Thanks for info on the sunflower lanyard. So it wouldn't necessarily help to wear it at an event in Germany? Right now I avoid all festivals, concerts etc because of the overwhelm. My business travel days are done now because I left my corporate job, but it was mostly things like week in NYC or Chicago (from London), and the most interesting was 10 days in India, though we had 3 locals assisting us at every step of the way, which made a massive difference. The rest of my major trips are leisure, yes. I've just always wanted to travel internationally, and made life/career choices that eventually supported that dream logistically and financially. :) P.S. I don't have a degree either.
@@BetterNeurodivergentTravel it won't be immediately recognised as something the act on like at an airport or plane. But you could use it to indicate you are autistic. I am planning my trip to the Olympics in 2 weeks time! I have already been to the hotel, used the same travel route, seen the surroundings (not the venue) and know how to cycle to the event. Hiya from Australia, just wanted to say thanks for the information about the lanyard as I didn’t know about it. I am a late diagnosis in my mid 50’s, would have definitely been helpful to know a lot sooner, but better late than never 😅. Though I tend to get hit in the head by handbags (which is very annoying) or even worse is someone’s bum right in my face 😂, when I board a flight as mine are all nearly 9hrs + and I always pick an aisle seat around the last rows anyway, even though it’s noisier behind the wings from the engines and babies, if there are seats vacant it’s usually right in the last rows. But I always travel with noise cancelling headphones the over ear type, and ear plugs and a mask for trying to sleep, they definitely help with my noise sensitivity.
You are so welcome! Flying domestic in Australia was such a good experience for me compared to US and Europe :) And I noticed Sydney has a quiet room too. So you too on the late diagnosis? Better late than never, as you say :)

❓Is the Sunflower lanyard known throughout the U.S.? My grandson who looks like a grown man will be flying for the first time next year. I will be with him but I am a nervous flyer and haven't flown in decades. I'm going to be as calm as possible to help him but he may be able to read my face. I think it's likely the airport staff will be trained but it couldn't hurt to look on their website or otherwise try to find out in advance if there's a quiet room or what additional assistance is available. Unless he has the card that also shows the disability the lanyard itself will only indicate to staff to be more patient etc. Hope that helps? :) Maybe someone else who has spent more time in the US will know more too.
I just did a little digging about this myself for a flight next summer. On the Sunflower Lanyard web page, they link to some partner airports who will provide the lanyards for free. It's probably safe to assume that airport employees at these locations have at least been briefed, if not trained. The employees of specific airlines, however, may not be.
