That throw to get Long at 3rd will forever be one of the most beautiful throws in MLB history.
I remember watching that first series against the A's, and thinking, "OK, he's kind of a slap hitter, don't know how much success, OH MY GOD WHAT DID HE JUST DO?!" It was an early career Vlad throw, but with impeccable accuracy. It was shocking and amazing. Ichiro's whole career was awesome like that.
51 thumbs up!
And thus why we call it '*The* Throw'
Hendu (the broadcaster) was wrong. By all rights, the 3B coach was right to wave Terence Long there. The chances of even most good-armed RF of making a throw that could have gotten him were extremely low. It was going to take one of the most amazing throws in MLB history to get him.
And Ichiro provided.
the reporter kept saying it was a strike but i can’t tell whether he knows ichiro was a pitcher in japan or not
The Throw shook everyone, nobody saw that coming
One of the greatest
The man who paved the way for more Asian players to play in MLB. The Japanese pioneer.
The T-10 he didn't just pave the way, he built the whole damn road. MVP, ROTY, Golden Glove, Batting Title, Stolen Base leader, All Star all in his first year.
Nah man...that was Hideo Nomo in 1995. Dude was a stud.
Nomo was never in the realm of Ichiro...please lol.
THE funny yhing is.. Nomo drilled Ichiro the first time he faced him in Mlb....he knew he couldn't get him.out....lol
Nomo was no dummie......
But the next time they faced off in Fenway, Ichiro got two hits of em.....
Hit the ball HARD right back at him....
Non baseball people don't see things like that, or realize ICHIRO DID THAT ON.PURPOSE lol.....
He was a wizard with the bat.
I think that the first Japanese, Asian mlb player is Masanori Murakami. Who debut from giants in 1965.
2001 was the last time Mariners went to the playoffs. I have this theory everyone recognized Ichiro was going to outshine them on the team so they turrned up. The next few years they realized he wasnt slowing down.
There was a lot (*A LOT*) more to it. Namely team President Howard "we're not trying to win a WS" Lincoln outright refusing to give fair dollar to any players worth more than a 3-year contract... but more than willing to go 3 years for players not worth 2.
It was bad management/ownership honestly. When they let the big bats go that was the sign.
that terrence long play was so sweet and satisfying. that throw was such a laser!
I remember watching him play in person for the first time in 2001 versus the Dodgers in LA. The 4th pitch of the game he hit a HR off Kevin Brown deep to right field. I remember saying to myself this guy is the real deal. The way he rounded the bases after he hit that HR with so much confidence, it was surreal. Glad I got to see him during his rookie year. They won that game 13-0.
Amazing to think he became the second fastest man in MLB history to record 2000 hits.........
In his 1,402 MLB game......
AL Simmons was the only man ever faster, in his 1,390th game...
@scxnic yes because he was not allowed to play until they lifted the ban
one of my favorites..gonna be sad when Ichiro chooses to retire
He’s not planning on retiring any time soon he’s said he wants to play as long as the mlb will let him
Just did 😫
@@Connor-tr1dv in the god damn Tokyo dome no less what a legend
Mariners have always had great announcers, even today they’re so exciting
Agree
1st ballot unanimous hall of famer
1:07 😂 the 3rd baseman walking away trying to figure out what happened. looking at the ball to see if it was really there, then at Ichiro and then the base like ‘ did that really just happen?’
baseball legend
beautiful
Legend
本当にレジェンドだ!
Ichiro uncorked that mutant throw to 3rd as a ROOKIE, and really didn't have to make many throws like that again because most hitters stopped running on him.
Good point.
Handsome man 💋
I remember watching him play his First MLB game on opening day of 2001.
Too bad he had never played in World Series..
I will never forget that year! Ichiro was the best player ever to wear a Mariners uniform! Area 51
Jason Sau Vili Griffey jr. had a better ops then ichiro
ありがとう!イチロー!お疲れ様ー!
Like watching poetry in action ❤️
Funny because I was born in 2001 and I first started watching Ichiro highlights on ESPN.
His first game is probably one of the few times that year could say Ichiro is 0 for 3. He still got a sharp hit in last at bat. His play was huge to that team 116 wins. Remember they lost in consecutive years Griffey and AROD. They needed a star infusion and he certainly was it.
It lead to huge years for Edgar who didn't have usual protection. Ichiro getting on base made Boone, Cameron and Martinez better.
Not to mention his huge impact on defense.
Ichiro Saw That Edgar Wasn't Producing So He Changed That
Jason Giambi with the A's. Jeezus I'm old
Through his first 4 MLB ABs, at least, Mike Hargrove was right about him. He really had swung himself to a .270 (.250 even!) BA.
thats Ichi style
Now his career will live forever in the Mariners hall of fame and someday, in Cooperstown.
GOAT
Probably the greatest rookie season of all time something like 242 hits as a rookie. Rookie of the year and AL MVP in the same season.. he was incredible and I’m so lucky to have been able to watch him live at safeco on many occasions. Imo he’s the hit king. And he was an all around player. His defense was just as good as his offense! And that is rare in the MLB!!!
If it weren’t for Ken Griffey JR he would/should be regarded as the Greatest Mariner of all time. A shame we weren’t able to build a truly competitive team around him. His rookie year was our best shot when we won 116 games and tied the record for most wins in a season..
Jon Bois brought me here lol
MLB Most Memorable Moment # 28
The fact that he beat that ground ball out…..
0:06 1 of many
Both Ichito and Pujols collected 3000
respect
nah, he was selfish. He did have issues, which is a fact.
I live ichiro but that last ground ball he was out
1st base wasn’t safe for the infielders when he was hitting & 3rd wasn’t safe for baserunners when he was fielding
I never knew a rookie of the year also won league MVP. (Not to mention a Gold Glove, and started in the All-Star game.)
Don't forget Silver Slugger or that not only did he start in the ASG, he was the leading votes receiver.
That Was Ichiro's Only MVP Award
@@jonathanwashington9199 That's like saying, "My peter is only 12 inches long."
Why is his first name on his back?
No wonder they got 116 wins!
@@jaredc304 Uh... Not swept and not in the first round.
The beat the Indians in the first round and lost 4-1 to the Yankees in the ALCS.
Yes, it was crushing and humiliating (they were better than that), but your statement was still inaccurate.
Vizquel's play was out
always found it hilarious how the back of his jersey doesn’t say suzuki
I will bet the farm that Ichiro becomes the Asian born player EVER elected to Cooperstown
First Asian born player
He was not born in the continent of Asia.... he was born in an island called Japan............ and thanks captain obvious.........
jansport backpack
Japan is part of Asia...
Tony Zan ..
It is a Pacific Island, like the Phillipines.
Asia is a continent, sorry.
Bob Bugsly
Honestly Google a map of the continents the Philippines is always part of Asia. And Japan is also always a part of Asia.
There are seven continents on planet Earth.
Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Australia (or Oceania), Antarctica.
Both Japan and the Philippines are always counted as part of Asia.
All star, gold glove, silver slugger, AL BA title, MVP, ROY. Most stolen bases and hits in the league…he should be in Cooperstown off that campaign alone! 2 minutes is not enough MLB…
He looked out at the end
Starting just after @2:25, via the LF angle slow motion being replayed at x0.25 speed, my best judgment would be 'safe'.
99 contact overall
Flash is real
WIZARD
Look like he was out at the end 😂
Ichiro is like " I don't need no steroids" like them other fools.
He was out.
ARIGATO MARINERS
And he retired today
That throw to get Long at 3rd base was accurate but it can't be compared to Cespedes throwing out Kendrick at home.
Easy first ballot HOFer
The bottom line is..... even the best couldn't get Ichiro out...... especially in the clutch, and with runners on.......
Real life anime
Kyoshiro his anime name major
Ichiro was out
tie goes to the runner
heyymannnnnnn there’s no such thing as a tie. If replay review was used in 2001 (which it wasn’t) they would have overturned the call and Ichiro would be out
@@heyymannnnnnn it has to be a tie first.
Calling Ichiro a rookie is like saying a player is a rookie when they get traded to a new team
Second
