I remember waking up @ 7 am on a cold morning here in São Paulo to watch the goat of clay Guillermo Coria play. I was so frustrated that he was struggling against a qualifier whom I had never heard of. Little did I know that this fragile qualifier would be the real goat. I searched this match on RUclips for years and sometimes questioned if it even existed, thanks for the upload ❤

I’m a Nadal fan but I remember watching this young dude named Djokovic struggling to breathe and the announcers kept saying he was nervous, but he wasn’t double faulting and he would always come in clutch in the big points. In my head I was like this dude ain’t nervous, but there was an issue for sure because he would retire while leading the score because he couldn’t get oxygen in it appeared. I’m glad he sorted out his allergy because living with an undiagnosed allergy is quite a challenge. I wish he figured it out a bit later so Nadal could have the most majors but gotta congratulate him. I knew he wasn’t nervous!

yeah, I saw him first at one of his earliest (maybe first) U.S. Opens...he clearly had very smooth strokes off both wings, very accurate, and was an excellent mover....sure, not physically fully developed and not a ton of power but clearly a major prospect

I liked Djokovic when he first came out and won the Aussie in 08...
But his behavior since proved to me he will never be "GOAT"..... not if you understand the traits that make elite tennis players - I don't care if he wins 10 more slams in a row (just not going to happen with Alcarez and Sinner now).
But even if he kept beating these nobodies like he has for 3 years now, I don't care if he gets 25, 30 slams.
They are not equivalent to when Roger won so many in the 2000s against some of the best ever in their prime:
He beat Sampras, Agassi, Hewitt, Djokovic in FInals, Nadal in Finals, Roddick etc etc.
That means alot more than beating tsisipas in 5 sets, or medvedev who is up and down, kyrgios, berritini etc.
Novak's a top 5 great - but if Wimbledon/ US OPen had not slowed down their courts in 2003 or so.... the disparity/ the gap between Federer, Novak and Nadal would have been even MORE OBVIOUS.
It would have been boring for tennis fans to see Federer win so much.
That's why the tournaments changed their surfaces - on purpose. They knew what they were doing..... they caused "debate" to raise interest.
If they hadn't slowed down the surfaces, there would be no debate about the best in the 21st Century:
      ROGER.

I will post something soon that I send you -
It shows that prior to 2003, Federer's serves cut through the grass faster and bounced LOWER to the returner .... this woudl have made it harder for Djoker to return.
But after 03 or so Federer's serve bounced higher and was slower off the longer grass giving returners (and thus more defensive players) more of a chance on grass - whereas in the past before the 2000s the offensive aggressive players had more advantage.
So clearly djoker benefited from that... but he still couldn't win wimbledon until Federer was past 30 yrs old by 2011 or so.
So Djoker had all those years when the grass was in his favor in 05 and thereafter.... yet the still couldn't win until 2011 -
You can call him the goat but I've seen players who are quite better overall than Novak on any surface:
      - Nadal obviously on Clay.
      - Pete and Roger on hard courts. Sampras and Roger have much more potent and consistent aggressive serves more than Djoker - they also volleyed much better.
My friend coached an ATP player who beat Federer at Wimbledon: He told me "Djoker especially in his young days had a serve that was a liability"
NO ONE in their right mind would ever say Sampras or Federer's serve were "a liability"

Thats cause tennis. Lwadsys becomed slugfest of how hard You can hit, before that was a sign of an undeveloped Game cause players like Coria itself could absorb and neutralize the pace, players had more variety and needed more than a Big serve or powerfuo shots, so it makes sense Novak was a hard hitters early, cause he was young and lacked experience

    • @sohailhines
      @sohailhines 8 дней назад +1

Novak hasn't changed his game that much. In fact the commentators said it during the match "welcome to modern tennis" - most players are using these very swings and full body rotations you see Djokovic doing in this clip. Novak can counter punch when he needs to, but he's especially known among players are someone who can often turn a defensive position into an offensive one with a single shot.
