The show keeps to the story of Wild Bill and Jack McCall pretty well. Jack McCall was acquitted in Deadwood camp, but since it was a camp with no laws or jurisdiction. Wikipedia quote on the topic. " Fearing for his safety, McCall soon left the area and headed into Wyoming Territory, where he repeatedly bragged at local saloons about killing Hickok in a "fair" gunfight.[1] But Wyoming authorities refused to recognize the result of McCall's acquittal on the grounds that the court in Deadwood had no legal jurisdiction. Because Deadwood was not under a legally constituted law enforcement or court system, officials argued that McCall could be tried for murder again. Agreeing, the federal court in Yankton, Dakota Territory, declared that double jeopardy did not apply, and set a date for a retrial. The trial began on December 4, 1876. No witnesses were called for the defense, and the guilty verdict came in at 10:15 p.m. on December 6. McCall stated that he had been heavily intoxicated at the time of the murder and did not remember any details of the event. He requested a new trial, as well as claimed that his name was not really Jack McCall, and that he had changed it when he left home as a child. Judge Granville Bennett did not believe his story and sentenced McCall to death by hanging. At 10:15 a.m. on March 1, 1877, McCall was hanged in a public execution in Yankton, at age 24."

Al doesn’t need to kill the little girl anymore. He chose to kill all the road agents that could have tied to him instead. So, the girl is absolutely safe now.
Mrs. Garrett was not having menstrual cramps; she was addicted to opiates ("laudenum"). Al ordered Trixie to get Alma hooked on harder opium, but Trixie instead is helping her get sober.
Dawn this show is a historical drama, and a few of it's characters are based on real life historical characters. Don't go googling if you don't want to be spoiled - but Wild Bill died very famously exactly as the show portrayed it.
The smallpox outbreak in Deadwood is the main reason why Jane is a local hero. She really dug in and helped with nursing those who were afflicted. They have little placards up throughout town expressing their thanks and admiration for this, and she has a whole section in one of the two museums dedicated to her work with those who were suffering. As for Jack McCall, he really was found not guilty by the miner's jury in what was an absolute sham of a trial. He didn't stay in town long, though, and was later found in Wyoming and given an official trial at which he was found guilty and hanged, you'll be happy to know. They decided since Deadwood had no legal jurisdiction, the trial there meant nothing, and there was no double jeopardy. The federal court in Yankton agreed.
Robin Wiegit, who plays Calamity Jane, was also in Sons of Anarchy in a minor role. She played the clubs attorney and the attorney who helped Tara with all her legal work when she was going to leave Jax. Of course Robin was in lots of other things as well
That scene where E.B. gives his soliloquy while washing the floor -- shown here around 7:08 -- has always seemed to me to be one of the most Shakespearean parts of the series.

Im glad to see you reacting to this wonderful show...truly one of the best ever. Many fans of Deadwood dont know that the Writer/Creator of the show, David Milch, has a show after Deadwood (was cancelled) called John From Cincinnati. It has a GREAT cast that features about half of the cast of Deadwood because David Milch wanted to give jobs to some of the people who were fired after Deadwood was cancelled before its time. For people who enjoy the dialogue/language of the show, John From Cincinnati has the same Shakespearian wordplay mixed with a healthy dose of "Cocksucker"s and swear words. To my knowledge, John From Cincinnati has never been reacted to. Would be GREAT to see you be the first.

DEADWOOD : imo the greatest tv series in the history of American tv historical accuracy and the most complicated and entertaining dialog of any American tv show
Enjoyed watching Deadwood w you. As much as you like Wild Bill I thought you might want to see the actor 28:21 portraying him as another Old West legend. Keith Carradine plays the part of Jim Younger, his two brothers, David and Robert, play Cole snd Bob Younger. Then Stacy + James Keach play Frank and Jesse James. Yhe movie is "Long Riders" from 84-85. Plus Randy + Dennis Quaid play brothers also in the gang. Christopher snd Nicholas Guest play ad the Ford brothers. It's post Civil War, 1870s, train abd bank robberies and really entertaining. Great score by Ry Cooder. Casting is perfect.
Lol he is much more famous than Penny's dad in Big Bang, that's Keith Carradine who has been acting on stage and film since the late 1960 amd has been nominated for many acting awards and even won an academy award for his song writing for the 1970s movie Nashville.
I am probably late to this, but the lady in the hotel is suffering from withdrawal. Laudinum that she took for headaches is pretty much opium. She quite cold turkey and the blonde lady from Al's saloon was helping her through it
She is having opium withdrawals. Laudanum has a high concentration of opium in it. The herb doc mixed to be drank as tea is to help with withdrawals which are very painful.
Halloween is a little over six months away. Here is your project between then and now: 1) Put together a Calamity Jane costume. 2) Practice your Calamity Jane impression.
Don’t worry about it, Dawn, religion is just a bunch of words that don’t mean much to me, either. Or at least that’s how I feel about it. And the actor who plays Jack McCall, is in another western you should check out, The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. And to answer your question, according to the WHO, smallpox has been eradicated since 1980.
The guy who plays the doctor is Brad Dourif who played the voice of the killer doll in the "Chucky" movies, he also played Worm Tongue in The Two Towers in Lord of the Rings, and in Alien Resurrection, (Alien 4), and in the original 1984 Dune movie, and he also played a serial killer in the Exorcist 3, which was just as good as the first Exorcist movie but I would skip the Exorcist 2 movie because it had very little to do with the first one and was a complete bomb. If you ever do watch Exorcist 3 do NOT watch the directors version because it was complete crap the way they edited it which left out a lot of good important parts, watch the theater version.
The basic story line of this series is fundamentally true. Most of the characters were a part of American history. Events including the death of Wild Bill Hickock were verified by witnesses. Jane Canary or Calamity Jane was pretty much portrayed accurately. She worw men's clothing and cursed and drank like a sailor. She always claimed that herself and Bill were secretly married although there was never any proof to that. At the time of his death Bill was actually going blind. This part of American History during the wild west era is very interesting with many people who stand out. And on another subject, I have to give your laugh"BEST LAUGH EVER".
The loves of Seth Bullock in this show in descending order: 1) Himself 2) Wild Bill Hickok 3) Alma Garrett 4) His brother's wife and son. Make no mistake, the first half of this show is rife with homoerotic tension for him.
Sweet summer child, Trixie and the widow are not treating the widows cramps.... The widow is addicted to opium (laudinum). Trixie is coaching her through detox because trixe(being a recovered user) took pity on the widow and offered to help get her clean. This is in direct contradiction of the instructions given to her by Al. Al wants the widow to become so lost that he can weasel her out of the land she owns. Which is why he sent Trixie over with a bag of drugs and suggested that she "help the widow in her grief". Trixie is playing a very dangerous game... but she's and absolute team player!
Trixie and Joanie are both lovers of Al and Cy respectively but at the same time they do not love the men and fear them and are owned/controlled by them. Joanie was lesbian. Her interest was in girls but her occupation and income came from her prostitution. The difference between Trixie and Joanie is very superficial. Joanie has more high class clothes, looks and airs The preacher is having seizures. It suggests either epilespy or tumour/cancer. They were never talking about periods. Alma was a junkie, addicted to laudenum which was an opium based "medicine" When withdrawing, she will get nauseous, cramping, sweats, chills and vomiting. The cramps they were talking about had nothing to do with periods but the cramps borne of her withdrawal.
The reason Joni was kissing that girl and looking at Psy was to make him jealous. He’s pretty much in love with her but she’s very same sex oriented . As always your reactions are so much fun. Please stay with this best series EVER 🙂💯
Joanie Stubbs is a madam. She runs the girls for Cy Tolliver. The same job that Al does. You will hear more about her backstory as the show goes on, but she isn’t evil and she isn’t good. She is a damaged person
Be very careful about googling the shows characters because a LOT of these characters, and their stories are true, as such the show can be VERY easily spoiled.
13:27 -- RE: The Preacher; A: He's having an Epileptic seizure. Part of the reason why he's been talking particularly insistently in "Gnostic" terms involving spiritual and metaphysical matters is that he's got a particular kind of condition which doesn't tend to get miraculously better. The *Deeper Lesson* is to consider this in very Old School terms. This Preacher has been "Blessed" like Jacob was Blessed in the Old Testament, when he wrestled with the Angels. God rewarded him by also striking him on the hip, and Wounding him. The Blessing is simultaneously a Boon and a Curse.
I'm enjoying watching this series with you, it's going to be fun. I hope you follow Timothy Olyphant [Seth Bullock] to the TV series JUSTIFIED as many have suggested. Another well written and acted show with many Deadwood alum making appearances
Creator David Milch, has remarked that the show Deadwood is essentially the story of the founding of The United States. Watching it through that lens puts the show in a completely different light. One of the greatest shows in televsion history
Dawn, you were asking about the relationship between Cy Tolliver and Joanie Stubbs. I forget what the whole story was, but I think Joanie's dad owed Cy a lot of money and couldn't pay it, so he gave Joanie to Cy. She's more or less his property now, but he treats her more like a daughter. I think Joanie's a lesbian, but she kind of oversees Cy's prostitutes.
My fav moment in episode 5 is how sol KNOWS seth is gonna go after jack mccall. He knows it. But he knows hes gotta work through all his angry stuff before he realizes it himself. Thats why he keeps just saying 'alright'. Cos he knows his friend that well, and knew he couldnt let that stand. I love that moment.
Wild Bill held the winning hand in the game he was playing. It was both black aces, and both black eights. It had a Queen "Kicker", either a Heart, or a Club. The "Dead Man's Hand", no poker player wants to play that hand.
This show has been in my absolute TOP since I gave it a chance in 2007. Thank you for doing this! There are not too many reactions to this absolute masterpiece...
I'm so glad you're doing this series, Dawn, as you are a favorite of mine, and the series is too. The writing is so good, the script, and the acting carries it so naturally - It's just the best. Thursdays have new magic now. And you're right ‐ these episodes are never long enough.
The actress who played Jane was incredible. It may please you to know McCall was hanged the following year after a 2nd trial in another territory. He was 24.

U pointed out a couple actors that were in Sons of Anarchy last video, Calamity Jane was also in SoA
most people watched each episode 2 or 3 times before the next episode aired, just an HBO ritual back then
The cramps are from her kicking the dope. She’s going through withdrawal
Trixie is in a happy place with that kid.
You would think a woman would know the difference between PMS and opiate withdrawal. LOL.
Don't bother explaining. She is too dumb to even get it when spelled out.
Al doesn’t need to kill the little girl anymore. He chose to kill all the road agents that could have tied to him instead. So, the girl is absolutely safe now.

Smallpox was originally called smallcox which is why they say coxsucker so much. It means someone has come into contact with smallcox.
17:32 I believe Trixie was helping her break her addiction to the opiate (morphine) laudanum and not getting her hooked on something else.
LMAO NOOOO. It has nothing to do with periods. She was abusing opioids. Trixie was helping her get off them.
I'm enjoying watching this series with you, it's going to be fun. I hope you follow Timothy Olyphant [Seth Bullock] to the TV series JUSTIFIED as many have suggested. Another well written and acted show with many Deadwood alum making appearances
OH HELL YESSS!!!!!!! THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!! Justified is outstanding, that would be awesome if she did that next!!!!!!! 👍😊😁
Laudinum is liquid opium. It was a common remedy for women with period cramps and can constipate you,
Only the medium has changed. I understand exactly what you mean.
My weekly fix 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Jane is absolutely brilliant.
Creator David Milch, has remarked that the show Deadwood is essentially the story of the founding of The United States. Watching it through that lens puts the show in a completely different light. One of the greatest shows in televsion history
did you give up on the nose ring? I think we all just wanna watch you fiddle with it. we can watch anyone fiddle with their ear ring.
Yep, Wild Bill is dead. This is where we get the term in poker dead man's hand. Two pairs of spades aces and eights.
how do u prevent smallpox? easy, its called chicken pox lol
All the characters are amazing in this show, but Pastor Smith haunts me. I feel so bad for him. And he is fictional.
Dang, almost forgot you were watching this.
Joanie was kissing the other girl to piss off Cy ( you will learn why in future episodes )
Your laugh is melodic and frequent. ❤
Wild Bill held the winning hand in the game he was playing. It was both black aces, and both black eights. It had a Queen "Kicker", either a Heart, or a Club. The "Dead Man's Hand", no poker player wants to play that hand.
Most profitable poker players aren't so superstitious that they'd turn down Aces up, double-suited, with a Queen kicker
Watch the film "Wild Bill"an excellent British movie
This show has been in my absolute TOP since I gave it a chance in 2007.
Thank you for doing this!
There are not too many reactions to this absolute masterpiece...
I'm so glad you're doing this series, Dawn, as you are a favorite of mine, and the series is too.
The writing is so good, the script, and the acting carries it so naturally - It's just the best.
Thursdays have new magic now.
And you're right ‐ these episodes are never long enough.
"The best ever!"
It definitely picks up steam as it goes, you aint seen nothin yet!
The actress who played Jane was incredible.
It may please you to know McCall was hanged the following year after a 2nd trial in another territory. He was 24.
That’s what I call closure
Alma is going through withdrawal after she stopped doping up, that's why she's in the condition she's in.
Shows based on history mean that there is no plot armour
Epilepsy and drug detox.
I've never seen a person lean so far forward. Can't wait to see more.
I am so freaking thrilled that Deadwood is getting the appreciation and you are just the person to get it!!!
So glad your doing this. Great show
Swearingin is da best ! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😂😂😂😂
There is a reason the preacher is strange.
The writers could not go THAT off book
it's great to see you being nice about women characters haha, but for real this show is so bloody good
