Went to Deadwood in 2022 and fell in love with the place and South Dakota in general. Can’t wait to go back. Actually, the trip inspired me to watch the series. They keep the old part of the town close to the look of the early 1900s. The towns of Lead, Custer and Spearfish were awesome to visit as well.
Kevin Costner used to own one of the casinos in Deadwood. Every single day they do a reenactment of the shooting of Wild Bill Hickock. Man. I love the Black Hills. I’m glad I have lots of family there because it gives me a great excuse to go there several times a year.
And yet actor William Sanderson is a very nice person. He actually lives near me in his retirement. "Hello, I'm Larry, and this is my brother Darryl, and my other brother Darryl."
Sometimes in those days men would marry their brothers' widows. A single mother in those days didn't often have the opportunities for employment that they do now. Sometime the choice came down to starving or resorting to prostitution. The marriage was supposed to provide an income to keep the mother and child fed, clothed and sheltered. Bullock is in that sort of a marriage.
I live in Baltimore, and we went there in 2019. We are big fans of the show and had to see it for ourselves. We visited Wild Bill and Jane's Graves, plus Bullock has a nice family spot in the cemetery that overlooks Deadwood. The Bullock Hotel is still open and looks just like it did back then. Deadwood was a cool place to visit. Thanks for sharing.
The Reverend Smith's story in this is so heartbreaking. The show changes his story a great deal, though. The real Reverend Smith met an ill fate at the hands of a band of natives in the hills of Deadwood, shortly after bringing spirituality to the town. He was liked and respected in his time, and his memory is much loved there, still, with a monument dedicated to him just outside of town. The real Smith had no brain tumor, and he didn't conduct any funerals, much less one for Wild Bill. Instead he was a street preacher who drew crowds of the interested and the devout, and he would travel to those who sought religious counsel. He was remembered as one of the few people who went to Deadwood not in search of riches, but to assist his fellow man. Oh, hilarious little bit of trivia: Keone Young, the actor who plays Mr. Wu, is typically a voice actor by profession, being a multilingual, talented speaker... playing a man who can barely speak three words of English. It's like Deadwood's version of Andrew Sachs in Fawlty Towers. Loved that you're finally meeting Silas, who is one of my favorite characters, played by Titus Welliver, one of my favorite actors.
I think his story does a great job of reminding us that until relatively recently, through all of human history people suffered terribly by the millions from all sorts of things that nobody had any idea how to diagnose let alone treat. Makes you appreciate modern medecine!
@@xellestar Oh bear in mind, I have no problems with the change. It was actually quite interesting and, as I said, heartbreaking. Gave some great character moments for those dealing with him, too (particularly Doc Cochran). I just wanted Dawn to understand this was a real person who was, by all accounts, a good man who met an unfortunate end.
So the Irish gentleman who had Wild Bill’s letter in his pants is played by the same actor who was the bully in A Christmas Story. Just a fun fact for you.
Can you please react to the Saban’s Power Rangers 2017 Movie!!! It is a very goooood movie. You may look at the name and think it is childish and cheesy. But it is hilarious and shows the growth of friendship and trustworthy. I swear it is a must watch.❤❤
The Reverend has a brain tumour, that's what he meant by "organic changes" in his mind. Tumours can cause the wandering eye, weakness in the limbs, fits and strange smells only the person with the tumour can smell.
The peacher has a brain tumor...that's what the doc is describing to him when he says "organic" condition in his brain...people with tumors sometimes say they smell different things such as almonds etc...
15:55 -- RE: Mr. Wu; Honest to Goodness, I don't want to have to pick a favorite character on Deadwood, they all have something going for them... but the top three for me are always Doc, Mr. Wu, and Swinge-en AKA Al Swearingen.
^^ And there's an Honorable Mention, too. Richardson is an important supporting character. If E.B. Farnham seems to get dirtier and dirtier, watch for Richardson to help relieve the tension for you.
Love this show but love your reactions more !! I see the ship from Firefly on your shelf, a little sad I didnt get to see your reaction to that series.
4:17 Mr.(short fuse)Bullock INside ♥ 11:14 A Good thing brain tumors weren't around in the late 1800s... 14:52 So no Levirate marriage in Scotland...ever?
I was born and raised in Yankton. We're not all CSs :) There is a a historical marker there that memorializes the trial and hanging of Jack McCall, the man who murdered Wild Bill.
In a series full of overly loquacious people, the most memorable conversation is still "Sweggen! - Cocksucka!" It's the Deadwood equivalent of "Darmok and Jilad, at Tanagra". 🤣
Hey Dawn. Do yourself a favour. Check out the movie Chopper, starring Eric Bana. This movie is critically acclaimed, based on a true underwold character here in Australia.
Hi Dawn Marie, I’m sure someone has already told you, but if not, I will… The actor who plays Doc Cochran…Brad Dourif…also played Grima Wormtongue in the LOTR: The Two Towers & The Return of the King, he was the voice of Chucky in the Child’s Play movies and his first movie was as Billy Bibbit, the young patient with the speech impediment in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
was really moved by your shoutout to your fans before the reaction,,, Think I speak for most here, in saying we love you to.. Dawn You are a Golden Ray of Sun, and your smile and laughter is such a delight in a F'ed-up world of ironic confusion.... Please always keep doing what you do so well, as you bring so much joy to each day!
Mr Wu will not be the "end boss". Why do you think at the Gem Saloon , they told Mr Wu to go around to back door ? Because in this era , Chinese were discriminated against as much as Blacks were . They did not hold public office , they could be bullied openly without repercussions from real law enforcement . Al treats Mr Wu with respect because Al needs Mr Wu as a supplier of heroin to dope addicts and also for the pig disposal system. re : E.B. Farnum , Al wants him as mayor because Al can control E.B. and Al can be the "actual" behind the scenes mayor like a puppet master
The get a haircut line was ad libbed because the actor was allergic to the glue holding his sideburns on and they were going to change the design of his facial hair because of that.
Dawn, enjoy the series it is quite good, but if I can make suggestion... do yourself a favor and skip the movie, it offers no resolution to the story, the writing is nowhere near as good and I wish I had not watched it at all.
I look forward to your reactions to Deadwood so much! I personally think Breaking Bad was the best (1A) but Deadwood is like 1B. Soon, you will see an actor who was in both those series..but not going to spoil it
Jewish law in the Bible said you had to marry your brother's widow. If it was your older brother and he had a son, then his son would inherit the family property. If he didn't have a son, then you had to give his widow one. That was the sin of Onan. Not that he spilled his seed (or masturbation). He was honor bound to give his brother's wife an heir to inherit, and he was deliberately preventing her from getting pregnant. He wanted his son by his own wife to inherit.
It was not unusual at that time for a widow to marry her husband's brother. The American Civil War created a lot of widows with children and there was no welfare system to look after them. Also if man lost his wife then he would often marry her sister if there was one available. I know this because my Great Grandfather married his wife's sister after she died in childbirth and he did it very quickly.
Your reactions are awesome as always I do have two phones I'd really like you to react to and I've been looking I can't see that anybody else has reacted to them yet the first one would be Cheech and Chong the Corsican Brothers and the second is yellow beard please please please at least check out the trailers and give them a solid thought please I would really like to see how you react to them if you haven't already seen them

Cannot tell you how much I have been looking forward to your reaction to episode 10... did not disappoint😂 This has become one of my favourite reaction series. Always looking forward to it each week. Nice work! Thank you Dawn!👏👏👏
Dawn fine job taking notes about your reaction's to this series. i am sure many thing's that happen on this series was not what really happened as made for TV. Yet the main topics were in fact real . Deadwood is 500 miles from me located in the . Black Hills of ,South Dakota and as of today . Still many Cowboys and wide open spaces and very pretty.
The majority of the towns in the old west, especially the Southwest, were run and practically owned by Madam's. The brothels were the richest establishments in the towns. They have quick access to gold, silver, and money. The madams built libraries, hospitals, schools, and raised funds for sheriff departments.
Dawn, Deadwood is an American city. It's real and located in South Dakota. Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane, are both buried there.
I went there once. Kinda nestled in the hills. Small casinos. Reminded a little of Cripple Creek, Colorado, except with more stuff. And more trees.
I can’t believe she doesn’t know this yet. Being a lifelong South Dakotan, I’ve been saying this in every episode’s comments. 😂
@@stevencass8849 Apparently, being ditzy and oblivious, is part of Dawn's appeal. I'm a subscriber, so I ain't complaining..
