Super Mario 64 Version Differences

- Super Mario 64 Version and Regional Differences. Besides the obvious translations throughout the versions, Super Mario 64 has many regional and version differences. Some differences are pretty small, such as the texture of a brick wall being slightly shifted and some are pretty large such as an entire course's painting being replaced. Super Mario 64 had 4 main releases, the American and Japanese (NTSC versions), Shindou, European, and iQue (Chinese). There was also a version of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 DD, but it never really released as the addon was a flop.

Pfff, i figured that with the trailer xD
Thanks captain obvious
I just finished getting 120 stars in the 3D all stars Mario 64. I’m not sure but I think they changed where the treasure chest star from dire dire docks lands after completing the puzzle. It’s off to the side now. Didn’t it used to be over the chest in front of the death whirlpool?

I've gotten so used to hearing "So long-a-Bowser!". It's gonna take a while to get used to hearing the Shindou version's "Bye Bye".
I remember So long gay bowser so much that it feels good for a new joke. which is Bye Bi! Nintendo can’t run from us.
It was also present in the DS version.
Mario says "Bye, Bi" instead of "So long, gay Bowser" because he still respects Bowser's preferences
He is just now acknowledging that Bowser also has a thing for women as well.
bowser is now bisexual
You people have weird thoughts.
Actually is because is Shindou ver, but is better the So long gay Bowser

If you're a speedrunner, then tell me if you can BLJ in the Pal version of Mario 64
This is a true story. I got Mario 64 for Christmas, however my parents trying to save money bought a used copy and it was the Japanese version. I literally had to discover the whole game not having any instruction whatsoever. Looking forward to Allstars because I'll finally get to play it in English and see how much easier the game is when I can actually read what it's saying!
Ah very interesting, thanks for sharing! Was it the 1.0 Japanese version or Shindou?
Japanese version has a cartridge that's keyed to not fit in foreign consoles. Did you mod the console?
@@Kaons it was 1.0. I know that because it had the flying Mario with the white background.
@@MrSquirrelsMan Not sure how old you are, but if you're older like me, you'll remember the 90s was obsessed with regional releases. From tshirts to CDs if you got something from Japan that was a special thing. The video rental store got some Japanese region games for the N64. You don't need to mod your N64 to play Japanese games. You can actually just unscrew the back case of a Japanese cartridge, and screw on a USA region back and you're good to go! They did that often and then after they rented them out a few times sold them pretty cheap. That's how it ended up in my hands.
@@kcmia7774 wait WAT
The translation of Peach's letter is pretty accurate. The Japanese (adjusted to fit English syntax) says, "Please come to the castle to play, I made cake. I'm waiting. -From Peach"
"Please come to the castle to play, I made cake. I'm waiting"
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )
Arousing.
I've always wondered what that says when translated.
For 3:54, another interesting thing is that the DS version keeps the star out in the open, like the original Japanese N64 release.
Odd how they reverted mutliple aspects, instead of keeping changes introduced in the international versions.
My guess is the Japanese devs just used their original, most popular JP ROM as a reference, the localizations for this game are kinda odd anyway imo
I guess you can say "Bye Bye" or "So long" to Mario's infamous line in the Switch version.
He says "Bye Bi"

i guess no one is going to mention the fact that japanese chain chomp sounds like Goomboss from SM64DS
It’s weird since I remember the painting for JRB being bubbles when playing Super Mario 64 DS, but while playing the OG game in 3D All-Stars it’s a pirate ship instead.
There's also missing letters in the graphics of the USA version of the game (V or Z for example) compared to the JP one‚ I'm sure they removed it because no text has these letters.
FYI for Shindou version, "dou" is approximately pronounced as in the English "doe" or "dough"
Comments would have you believing that everyone used BLJs as a child lmfao
Underrated channel, great video bro!

I love how this is all of a sudden very informative content.
Thank you!
You know in the European version of
Super Mario 64, the only Mario voice clips that altered pitches were his
Jump: “Ho!” Double Jump: “Ho-hoo!”
and “So long King Bowser!” which I like it because those pitch alterations were done to match the original recordings tho the rest of some of his pitch voice clips remain the same incorrect pitches as the USA release.
5:26 Technically, the Ya sound that Mario makes wasn't affected. The Ho was though. Just wanted to point that out.
I remember actually seeing the painting for Jolly Roger Bay being bubbles instead of the shipwreck while playing Mario 64. I thought I was just misremembering things, until I realized that I got confused with the DS version, since I've played both the original and the DS version when I was a little kid. SM64DS actually uses the bubbles instead of the shipwreck for some odd reason :P
Additional data: In the Spanish version for America and Spain of Mario 64, the same sounds added to the US version have also been heard, and this includes Peach's voice, although it is heard in English, but in this version literally translated its final dialogues From English to Spanish, also in the Japanese version of no Peach's voice was heard at the beginning in his letter or when completing the game.
Those higher pitched voices are going to bother me in 3D all stars
I can't believe those are the sound effects they're using... No idea what Nintendo is thinking
I KNEW IT. The second i opend mario 3d all stars i noticed "hmm.. Mario sounds a bit higher pitched then normal" and i was right!
Why does everyone always say he says “bye bye”? He is clearly saying “buh bye”
bye, bi
I thought the jolly Roger bay paintings were the same in every version?...
They are on the DS, not on the N64
One pretty noticeable difference (at least for me) was the "Here We Go!" after getting a star. In the PAL version Mario says that line a little bit later than in the other versions. This occured when I was playing the Wii Virtual Console version, but it was later fixed in the Wii U port (apparently the Wii version was made for my own region, which is PAL, but the Wii U one was made american in all non-asian regions.)
*ITS THOSE DAMNED PERSONALIZED COPIES!*
I'm sure people have commented on 3D All Stars using the "Bye bye" clip, but it should be noted that the other differences shown here in the Shindou release were not apparent in the rest of the trailer. I'd hope that if anything, they just added the voice clip to the original release and left the rest of it alone. Though with Nintendo's approach concerning glitches recently, even in single-player games, I'm not convinced the BLJ is intact. I'd hope they realize how iconic and important it is, and how popular speedrunning continues to be specifically with this game, but again, it's Nintendo...
Knowing Nintendo, I'm afraid they did patch glitches
Game leaked. It’s Shindou
They use the Shindou version for 3D All Stars.
I'm only here because the Shindou version was used in Mario 3D All-Stars hence why Mario says "Buh-bye!" instead of "So long, King Bowser!"
Fun fact, the current president of Nintendo of America's name is Bowser. Completely coincidentally, and has nothing to do with changing the line.

Ok so, let's talk about the compass rose in Rainbow Ride. If you all remember SM64 is the first 3D mario game. Looking at the compass rose, it resembles the arrows when dragging a sprite or tile in a game design. If you look around, Rainbow Ride resembles a test map meaning that Rainbow Ride was perhaps the first 3D mario level to be developed. It looks as if they used it to test areas and tricks they could do with the development. My guess is that they were not originally going to use Rainbow Ride as a course but due to the lack of time, they would be unable to develop another course quickly so they just added Rainbow Carpets to the course and named it Rainbow Cruise. They would localize it as Rainbow Ride in the American Version. We need to also remember that in the Smash Melee arena made to resemble Rainbow Ride, there is a completely different song that is not even present in Super Mario 64 while in SM64 they use a generic song in the game: the Slider theme. This shows that Rainbow Ride was put in the game on an impulse. When the developers released the game in Japan they had more time to fix errors and they would have more breathing room so obviously, they removed the compass roses although because they probably did not want to make it seem like they were favoring any country, so they did not even bother making another song for Rainbow Ride until Super Smash Bros. Melee came out in 2001. We also need to note that the compass roses are between climbing poles meaning that they were perhaps the hardest to drag around.
The Bye Bye is reused in Super Mario 3D-All-Stars.
3:04 goodbye bowser
“Shin-dew”
shindo, shindew, who cares lol
Kaons You know what, I’m sorry for that. It was kind of rude. I actually didn’t think you’d care enough to respond. Now I feel bad... The reason it even bothered me is because a big weeb and somewhat of a language geek, and I’m learning Japanese. Anyways, I really did like your video!
Also, fun fact: The way “ou” is used in the romanization of Japanese is to represent a long o sound, which literally written with the characters for o and u. I don’t why this is, but I perfectly understand why you thought it was pronounced “ew” considering the French pronunciation.
@@Butterstix2014 I've heard shindou pronounced both ways when referring to this game so I wasn't sure what to go with, also it's fine I'm a big weeb too just know nothing about the language
You don’t have to explain why, I was just being too pedantic.
@@Butterstix2014 I'm not sure about that. I know this has already been resolved, but I think sharing knowledge is a good thing, so I'd like to make a counterpoint. Imagine if someone was doing a video about Italian food, and they kept pronouncing pizza "piss-a." Or if someone kept pronouncing albeit like "all-bait". You'd feel compelled to say something, right? I wouldn't call it pedantry exactly, although the initial comment does come off as mocking. But it feels lighthearted and not malicious, which your follow-up comments made completely clear.
If it's a word like karaoke or karate where the English pronunciation is so standardized that it's a full on loan word at this point, it would be pedantry to insist people pronounce it in the Japanese fashion. Or getting on someone's case for not properly pronouncing the elongated syllables in Yoshi's name, where English doesn't even have the necessary distinction between the sounds for it to be intuitive to a native English speaker. But shindou hasn't entered the English language in that way, and English has all the sounds to pronounce it correctly (except the distinction with the elongated O), so I think a correction was fine. Plus, it could help people understand the intended pronunciation of other ou romanizations in the future! I think that's overall a good thing.
(Of course, if it had been written shindō from the beginning that would have cleared up the confusion... but ou is so much more convenient to type.)
I love the goofy chain chomp
I’m pretty sure the shindou version is the one being remastered but I may be wrong on that

Dude, I reduced the speed of the video to 0.75x and this way you became a regular person who talks fast...
2:03 I don't know why the game didn't get the Spanish and Italian translations like later games. As seen in the video, they ran out of space in the menu, but they could made an entire separated section with all the 5 languages...
Awesome video man, you’ve got another new sub!

I know Super Mario 64 very well and had all 120 Stars, but hearing the differences between American and initial Japanese versions, I am amazed to see that we have the better one all along and Japan felt RUSHED (one thing that's mostly unnoticed is the star count was moved a tiny bit to the left in the international version). iQue sure is late as hell. By 2003, Gamecube was already active. Nintendo did do a dumb move by using the Shindou version for the Switch re-release. The company's not like it used to be. Despite playing the N64 game since original release, I never even knew about the BLJ glitch! The "So long, eh-Bowser" to "Bye bye" didn't bother me that much, though, as I already knew about that.
That rolling screen when you tried to play the EU version through an US/JP N64 was because the video signals in the hardware don't match, as PAL is 50Hz while NTSC is 60Hz. Otherwise, it actually still runs. A shame, though.

Mario doesn’t say “ravioli” in the US version, and he says “bye bye” when throwing bowser in the switch 3d all stars version.
the ccm star sometimes spawns in the correct spot
In J 1.0? I've never seen that personally
Mario doesn't say "So long, king Bowser" anymore because this version is based on the 1997 Shindou Edition of Super Mario 64 in the one were added and removed some features, like the voice acting. See, in Japan there's no "Bowser", it is called "King Koopa", so the "Gay Bowser" sound effect was replaced with a "Bye-bye"
