I know this video is two years old, but on the off chance that you read this, using steam’s controller compatibility layer is great for games like this where only certain controllers are supported. I’ve used it to play Rocket League and the Super Mario 64 port (among a few other games), since they don’t support Switch Pro controller.
if anyone wants to try this the low-tech way, you can swap the wires to the horizontal section of the yoke of your TV, and likewise modify the controller to do the same thing.
Watching this is just making me feel more justified in struggling on adventure 2 mode of dkr64. Over 20 years of playing it one way and now I'm trying to fight through mirrored mode... It's like trying to rewire my brain, lol!! It's neat how in a lot of games, something as simple as flipping the maps with some adjustments and a few difficulty tweaks can make an honestly fun new game+ mode and saves so much on resources, given it's the right type of environment for it.

Most stages in the game have map updates after the first star and you get kicked so the map can make those changes

The penguin could simply spawn after you go down the slide once? Especially since the star is outside the slide
