Went out and tested a few more props with the ProMax.
Ran a 28 Small ear chopper for a best of 83mph with about 14% slip.
Followed that with a 28 Lightning ET for a best of 91mph and 6% slip. The boat loved the ET and handled like a dream with that prop. With the hydraulic jack plate I'm able to move the engine height easily. I ran both props at about 1/2" below, even, and 1/2" above the pad. The ProMax spun both props to the stock limiter at 6800. Still have a few more to try out. This has a lot more left in it! The GoPro GPS seems to read 1-2mph below the Garmin chart plotter and Livorsi GPS speedo. Rocking a @drag_boat_garage sticker on the truck. Check out his page!
Really enjoyed the video ,impressed with the stability of the hydrostream and the sound of the big two stroke kudos to you buddy balls as big as book ends ! Cheers
Thanks! It’s super stable up to 80mph, then you gotta start driving it.
Imagine the neighbors on the lake watching you rip by "there he goes again lol"
I try not to make people mad. But I'm sure someone doesn't like me by now haha.
This video appeared in my list so I clicked it. Right off the bat i said I know that road. Then you made the next turn to goto the river. I said to myself no way he's going over the hwy lol. Good vid. I'll have to watch all of them now. I used to live in the neighborhood by the river. When we were kids we would always hang out by the rope swing that isnt there anymore and the boat launch and watch all the fast river boats. Rememeber when the F1 boats would race up the river a bit. Be safe and have fun.
Thanks man! I grew up and lived here my whole life. I remember riding my bike to the dam when I was a kid watching some of the go fast boat guys.
When only the fastest, best engineered will do, beauty!!!
2.5 MercMan
Nothing like the 2.5!!
awesome hydrostream. My dream boat.
Thank you.
slow down and enjoy nelson! this was a nice hydro restoration.
Thanks, Karl! I want to see it click 100 just once. Then get rid of that prop and run with it where it is here haha.
That’s a damn good motor , holding up to all that smashing lol , looking good!
Been wanting a ProMax since I started this build. From everything I read they're bullet proof.
@@TNels I have one on mine too for river riding and I love it
Just an awesome job.
Thank you very much!
Enjoy YOUR GREAT LAKE..IT SURE IS CALM...AND EMPTY..!
This is the Mississippi river a little north of Minneapolis. I pretty much only make top speeds runs early mornings on weekdays. Luckily my work schedule allows for that.
Lotta spank in that motor..! Boat seems much more stable , efficiency improved and planing well....prop improves performance....keep searching... great result for all your work..!
Yeah I'm getting really close to where I want it to be. This motor is an animal!
Really awesome 😎
Thank you!
dam dude, pretty epic!
Thank you!
Holy moly!!
That B1tch is banging ! I’m nervous your gonna loose a rear seat base cushion . Maybe a lil snap strap ha ! Great job on the resto & the speed !
I know, I need to do something about the seats. I have some latches for them I was going to put in with the new seats. But the upholstery shop forgot about me I think haha. I did remember to just pull them out the one day I was running the 28 chopper. I'll probably just keep doing that for now. It would be a bit less weight overall haha.
For sure the whole 2lbs is gonna push you past the next speed mark ! Every lil bit helps for sure ! Good luck on way to 100 !
Getting better every time...i love the challenge of setting up a fast boat. Holeshot looked good with the 28 ,you should be able to pull a 30 out the hole with the hydraulic jack plate and run upper 90s no problem. 100mph by end of summer . Great job
Thanks! I really need to sit in it with a big framing level and get it balanced perfect side to side before I start pushing higher into the 90's I think. I feel like the motor has 100 in it with the right prop. I'll need a 32 or 34 to get there according to a prop slip calculator. With the plate bottomed out I haven't found a prop I can't get on plane yet.
@@TNels not with a 225, I think your topped out! Need some more HP
You know, if you put Mercury 300 ProMax on that bad bi7ch you'll probably run 110mph! Great video, the entire build/restoration series was great.
I'll be happy to crack 100 once, haha. Not sure how well the boat would handle the extra weight of the 300.
@@TNels I’ve been thinking of putting my pop’s 300xs 505lbs on my 83 VULTURE, Maby the 20 foot will hold it better nice boat! Runs nice I don’t see much chine walk or you got that shit under control
@@durawins I think the Vulture would handle the weight better than the 18’ Viking. Neither one of these props were walking very bad. I have gotten a lot better at driving through the walk, but the ET was crazy stable hardly needed any steering input. I need to find one of my own, thinking I might buy a new one in a 30.
Stick with the engine you have and get a crafty engine builder to do some magic on it.
@@daffyduck9901 I'm pretty happy with it exactly how it is. I think I can break 100 with it stock. Just need the right prop.
Boat acts like it has way more hull out of the water on the lightening. It’s so interesting how different props can change the dynamic of how a hull performs. I’ve played with 6-7 different props on my boat. Have my couple favorites for summer/winter
I agree. It seems to carry the bow about the same as a chopper, but lifts more of the stern as well. Its really my favorite prop I've ran so far. I've had a few discussions with folks talking about the same thing. I can't believe how much differently the boat will act depending on the prop. It's incredible! I don't have much use for a winter prop as all of our water is hard in the winter haha. Gives lots of time for building still like this though.
The more of the boat you get out of the water the faster you go, less drag.
Got a ventura with an evinrude 235 on the back, she moves pretty good
Sounds like a fun ride!
Great video I’ve been 80 once in my kachina jet boat with a built big block fast enough!,,
Yeah its quite a feeling going that fast on water. I'm going to keep tweaking on it until I can break 100. Then I'll start setting up for drag racing.
45+year old boat...definitely a good design..!
Howard Pipkorn, RIP, was very far ahead of his time with hull designs.
Nice..... very nice. This is the first video of your boat I've seen. I've got a checkmate mx13 that I'm redoing. Putting a jackplate and a 115 Merc Tower of Power and chopper prop 28 p. No way near the speed you're running, but, should be a fun boat. You definitely did a awesome job on your boat. It is super sharp. Good luck with it and be safe brother...... Oh, I meant to tell you, my boat is only 13' long, and isn't very heavy at all, I should have it ready to go in about a couple of weeks, and I'll let you know what it runs, I'm hoping it will be a good boat for fun...
Thank you! I bet that Checkmate will be a sweet ride when you get it going!
@@TNels Thank you, I appreciate that, the boat you have is second to none.... And you handle it very well it is a super nice looking boat and you just really fast that's about too fast for me but you definitely have the boat for it, it looked like it wasn't having any problem Rolling down the river...at all..... There's not many that can hang with it.... You have a lot of quality work and time in your boat, and it shows..... Looks great and will haul ass, be careful out there and have fun with it. I should have mine close to ready for the test runs, I hope my engine isn't to heavy, I had a Evinrude 85 on it and it would jump out of the water, but I couldn't get it to run that fast, I'm just starting to learn all of this stuff about these boats and the setups that it takes to make them go like we want them too. Congratulations on your boat,it looks like you have it on your way to what you want it to be. Stay safe brother, I'll be back in touch with you pretty soon I hope....
An 85 on a 13' hull should work well. Should be a fast boat too. Look into a jack plate and possibly a coned/low water pickup lower unit. Then you can start testing props. A good ole "chopper" prop is a good inexpensive place to start. Also make sure you've got a solid steering setup if you're looking to go fast.
@@TNels sorry about the late response, been a little bit busy. It's funny you said that, about the 85, that's exactly what I had on it.... An Evinrude 85 horse, it was strong and would jump out of the hole and on plane in a hurry seem like it was almost immediate... The only problem I had with it was the top speed it wouldn't run but about 30 35 I thought I should have run at least 40 or 45 with that 85 on it that was before I found out about props and stuff. Such as jack plates and low water pickups four blade three blade and two blade propellers...... Choppers and shredders aluminum and stainless steel just all kind of stuff..... I had bought the Mercury 115 to repower a pontoon boat that I got but decided instead to put the 115 on my MX 13 and put the 85 on the pontoon...... Sounded like a win-win situation to me
A friend of mine has a boat that is very similar to mine but it's like a 14 and a half 15 ft and it's got a 115 on it he's fixing to put a Jack plate on it to see if he can get some more speed out of it.... I had driven it and liked the way that it pulled, that's what made me decide to put the 115 on my MX 13 .... Just something to play with and have a little fun with.... I don't need to run but about 55 or 60 that's about as fast as I need to go I'd like to run as fast as you guys are but I don't think I'm in that League..... And thank you for the ideas on my boat, I need all the help I can get, thank you. Appreciate your time very much......
I found your videos the other night and watched them all. I have to say your work is meticulous! Amazing build! The reason it caught my eye is I had the same boat in the 90's. I was running a Merc 2.4 175 HP HO with a 200 power head. 80 mph all day long and 84 on radar (no gps back then). Can I offer some advice? Both hands on the wheel! Hot foot and steering controls. Do you have solid motor mounts? Also quicker going into a slight wind with a passenger. Preferably in a bikini! Your driving has come along way!
Thanks Rod! I've got a hot foot and steering controls for the trim and jack plate. I just use the control box for a shifter and to keep the nostalgia look. The ProMax has the stock mounts, but I think they are solid from the factory. Going to try adding some weight to the port side next time out.
I like, I like it a lot. Any used hydrostreams for sale out there With or without a motor Eastcoast.
There's always some for sale on marketplace.
seemed even more stable with the 28 ET it locks like you are not having to do much steering correction at all ... running great!! some really nice water too where are you?
The 28 ET has been the best prop I've ran yet. Most the time I'm on the Mississippi a little north of Minneapolis.
Kick ass man! Looks like you used a little more trim on the last couple runs, picked up a few mph. Prop struggling to carry the bow at that speed? Looks like a little porpoise starting to set in.
Yep, few more bumps up on the last pass really broke the hull loose and got it over 90. I wish I had a view from shore to get a good idea how the hull was running. It was feeling pretty damn light at that point. I think it needs more balance work side to side to get to that 100 mark. I feel like the ET carried the hull well.
I have always wanted a boat like that I guess my young years are gone now
It’s never too late!
That’s terrifying 😬
Also very fun!
Nice, the round ear "or" Chopper will give you more lift (you don't need) , better off with a Cleaver maybe 32 1/2" above.
Best prop I've found yet has been an ET.
Dawg you just dropped your whole address with your boat and everything there hopefully no one touches anything
How hard is it turning at 85?
Its a little tough but with the SeaStar steering its not too bad. Harder turning left than it is right haha.
Are these boats rated for that much horsepower; I remember back when I was a kid I wanted to put large engines on boats like these; I was told it was illegal
Kind of a grey area.
Not illegal, no law against putting whatever you want on them but you won't be able to get insurance if you go past the max hp rating on the sticker, viking says 175 max, 90-175 recommended
The helmet is a bit overkill for an 82 mph boat!😊
Was still testing setups at this point. I don’t want my noggin to hit the water at 80 😵
Well done. Let that ProMax eat. What river in MN ?
Thank you! I’m on the Mississippi most the time.
Throw out those heavy back to back seats try two light weight fiberglass shells..my 20 footer ran low 90's with a modified 235 omc 32 cleaver..1985..fun..~~~
I should get another seat set up for going fast. But these work great for skiing which we do a lot of still.
I'ma knob.cause that looks pretty scary
It’s a lot of fun too!
I DONT THINK YOUR SHADOW CAN PASS YA MERC POWER THE ONLY WAY TO GO FAST GOOD JOB ON THE WHOLE PROJECT
Thank you! She's a ripper!
It's looking more and more like you really need 300 hp to get to those triple digit speeds in one of these.
Lots of guys out there over 100 with less than 300hp. I need more RPMs, which with the stock computer I'm on the rev limiter.
@@TNels has anyone succeeded in hacking the ECU?
@@ZoneTelevision I believe it’s been done, but you can buy aftermarket ECUs that are adjustable. That’s my plan if a bigger prop can’t get me there.
the 5 thumbs down are jealousy
After all that hard work put into this boat, it has crappy looking seats that won’t stay closed! Lol
The upholstery shop I was going to use dropped the ball getting me the seats back. Gave them six months to get it done. Didn't want to wait since our summers are short here, so I put the original seats in for this season. I'll do the upholstery myself over this winter.
@@TNels I feel your pain. I once took my last boat to a shop to have the lower unit rebuilt ( lost reverse ) . I am a licensed aircraft technician and could have done it myself but didn’t have the time. To make a long story short I paid them up front. It sat there so long my new interior rotted out and they never fixed it either. I left the boat there and bought a brand new Tahoe 700 last summer. It’s not a fast boat like my last one, it did 75mph. The new one pushes 58-60mph and we have a lot of fun with it wake boarding and tubing so it’s plenty fast for a big boat; 21 ft 4100 pound run about.
By the way, you did an awesome job restoring this boat, when you were spraying the glitter I was thinking it was too heavy but man it turned out beautiful!
@@871jamie Yeah, seems if you want it done right you just have to do it your self. It's a bit on the heavy side for a Hydrostream, but still runs in the 90's so I'm happy.
Hi
Almost 90~ 89 is close. Fine tune that motor and maybe get 93mph? Is that motor new? If it is, then it will loosen up, and go over 90... You could put racing motor parts on it, and try to get more horsepower... Lot you can do isn't it
Working with different props I have it to 94 now. The motor is a bone stock ProMax. I might start throwing a few new parts at it to break 100.
30 Hydromotive Prop
I have a 30 chopper I'll try next. Then I'll have to find more to borrow haha.
I am the only person that watched the whole video and I was the first!
Thanks!
And so too much wind in that video
Hard to get a spot where cameras don't pick up wind when you're going 90mph...
