- Pulling the original, more than likely worn out 1978 175 and bolting up the new to me 1998 225 ProMax.
The 175 will go in my basement and live there as a back up. Unless I decide to restore another boat and I put it on that.

Brings back memories. Had the same ride / Gold with orange border tan seats. Never blew over but stood her up straight a few times!
I’ve had this one stand up a few times but never went over.
You did a great job on this thing man! Just had to comment to tell you that. Especially for a first timer with composite work. Nice! 👍👍😎
Thanks man! It was a heck of a learning curve.

Absolutely bro. It's definitely tedious, messy as hell too, but you definitely rewarded yourself by just looking at the finished project. Thing is beautiful! 😁
Another great video! So pumped for you, that 225 promax is a perfect match for your incredible boat.
Thanks! It seems to be a great match! Plenty of power for it!
Killer boat most people don’t even know👍🏻mine loved a foot of chop and a head wind👌
Yeah they’re sweet boats. Most people don’t believe it’s from the 70’s haha
Let the fun begin......definitely an improvement..
It's a crazy improvement haha. She rips now! Can't believe the power it has.
I ear freiburger back...and the flip flop 👌
Oh yeah! Roadkill is great garage entertainment.
@@TNels i agree 👌
Nice! Can't wait to see what she will do now. Try 28 to 30 pitch 3bld. Chopper or 4bld. cleaver. That's what I run on my V-King with 225hp to propshaft.
Saw 86 with a 26 chopper. Ran my 30 cleaver this morning but it was a bit too rough. She taught me a lesson today, came down off a wave a bit crooked at 80 and it hooked, threw me out of the seat and went straight at shore. I was able to turn the wheel and avoid hitting anything.
@@TNels wow, lucky you were able to save it and not get hurt. Somebody up there looking out for you!
As much as I like the old 2.4's, that new motor is one sexy best!
Thanks! The ProMax is a sweet motor for sure! I still plan to hang the original clamshells over the new motor this winter.
@@TNels Talk about a sleeper!
@@rodn5616 Thats the plan! And keep the old school looks I remember from my childhood.
Nice!
Thanks!
looks good i’m actually buying my first viper today a 74
Thanks! Have fun with the Viper! Are you planning to do the core?
Any buying tips for a beginner looking into hydro streams?
@@icool247 Plan on it being rotten unless there's proof it's been rebuilt before. The more rigging you can get with it the better. Engine, steering, gauges, etc. Windshields and emblems are hard to come by so best to find one that already has those on it.

Just curious why you disassembled the older merc. Before you ultimately took it off? And why take the lower unit off the newer motor, just to put it back on?
I'll be storing the old motor in my basement. So I pulled it apart to be able to get it down there. Pretty awkward trying to move a fully assembled outboard.
I pulled the lower off the new motor so it would sit on my engine stand better. It always had to sit crooked cause the skeg sat so low. I didn't feel comfortable with the new motor sitting crooked after handing over so much cash for it.
Did you surface the 175 lower high with a big Prop?
What do you reckon would be the height limit for those skinny prop shafts and a pitch in the high 20s?
Nice Rig
I ran it as high as 1/2" above the pad with everything from a 24-30p prop. The newer ProMax has the same size prop shaft as the old 175. From what I've read the bigger issue with surfacing the old preload cases is the side loads placed on the carrier bearings. But I honestly don't know.
Steel Toe Flip flops OSHA approved
They're Bluetooth haha. I'm channeling my inner David Freiburger.
I’ve watched you re core this boat about 6 times 😂 love the progress, noticed you’re aluminum skills, any plans on a 15” mid?
Holy crap! Thanks a lot man!
No plans for a 15" mid as of now. We use this boat a lot for pulling skiers too so a 15" wouldn't work well for that.
Think I already watched it at least 6 times too :-D How do you get back into the boat after skiing? Can‘t see a ladder or swim step. Probably have to watch it again
That is going to be one bad to the bone boat, Wat to go...
Thanks! Its an animal with the ProMax now.
Why two rigging tubes? Never seen a boat with two.
I like the symmetry. Plus it would be very tight with just one. Fuel and throttle/shift cables in one, battery cables and control harness in the other.
do you have a custom pad?
Stock pad, blueprinted.
Why would you pull the lower unit off the new outboard before putting it on the boat? it it because you’re hoist doesn’t have enough height? Also, why would you disassemble a running outboard just to remove it from the boat? Doesn’t really make sense.
Because I bought it used and didn't know the condition of the water pump. Pulled the lower to replace the pump. It also sits much nicer on an engine stand without the lower.
I disassembled the old engine because it will be stored in my basement. Much easier to carry it down a full flight of stairs in 3 pieces. Makes a lot of sense.
@@TNels now it all makes sense. Nice boat man.
Get it out on Prior Lake and show them how it is done...
I suppose could drag it down there. I’m a bit leery of unknown lakes to me with everything so low this year.
i want one of these so bad but feel like id kill myself on it
It’s lot of fun, just have to respect it like you do a fast car or sport bike.
How bad it chime walk?
Depends a lot on the set up. They way I have it now it really isn’t too bad. I have a 50lbs weight bag I put in the rear wing opposite me, 4” set back, prop shaft 7/8” above the pad, 30ET prop. Anyone could drive this boat to 80, you do have to “drive it” beyond that, but it isn’t terrible.
