I used to draw on it with cheap glass marking pencils which hardly costs about 5 rupees in india
I drew a picture of Korosensei on toned paper but the paper was so brown that barely any of the pencil colours were vibrant enough
I really appreciated the value scale in this video. Values have always been difficult for me to understand, but I think finally I'm starting to understand them better and videos like this help me improve.

My neighbor who I am very good friends with gave me a bunch of toned paper for my birthday and since my dad’s birthday is coming up, I decided I am going to draw a portrait of him while experimenting using toned paper as a gift. I'm sorry to hear that Amy. I'm writing this while in the hospital myself with colon cancer-A second bout with it. It's a journey. I'm not a gushing "positive" type by nature, but the best thing I can advise is absolutely stay positive. It's essential. New treatments, developments, and options are abounding. Best wishes.

I truly am wishing you all the best and I hope you are okay.. sorry, I'm sure that is a silly thing to say considering you are currently in hospital but I hope you understand what I mean. Cancer is a dreadful disease that rips so much away from you but you are right, staying positive is absolutely essential. I appreciate your encouragement and reassurance, especially as someone who has been through this terrible journey and is facing this disease yourself. I'm currently undergoing 6 months of chemotherapy- I've had 4 rounds so far and will be having my 5th round on Thursday. 🤞 it's been very tough and it's only now that I'm fighting cancer myself that I truly understand and appreciate how tough this journey is. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers - I'm not sure if you are religious or not (I respect everyone no matter what their beliefs) but I will be praying for you and I am wishing you all the best 🙏
Now that is one thing i have not used a lot of, toned paper. I usually use white. I will have to look out for some nice toned papers for some of my up coming ink drawings. Great informative video Amy :)

You can start with just black and white (or brown and white).. Any dry medium like conte, charcoal, colored pencil etc. Toned paper is amazing.

I have been using toned paper but it seems that every time I use it the paper doesn’t really hold up for long and stars to create holes. The problem is that every time when I add layers of colour for drawings it doesn’t take long for the paper to rip or get really fuzzy and rough on the surface. I’d really like it if you could give me any tips on how to stop this issue because it ruins my drawings:( Thanks
That is so frustrating that your paper is ripping and ruining your drawings! There's nothing worse than working so hard on a drawing and then it gets ruined. A couple of things I would suggest is looking at your paper thickness. I'd recommend a paper thickness of at least 100lb, especially if you are doing a lot of layering. If it's thinner than this it will be more prone to ripping/ tearing. The second thing I would do is try and build up your layers softly, use light pressure to do this and avoid applying too much pressure when burnishing. To do light layering it's best to hold your pencil further down the casing (near the end) and hold your pencil more horizontally to avoid applying too much pressure. I really hope this helps! 😊

You are so right Amy. I have a toned paper sketchbook which sits largely untouched. From watercolour I am so used to working on a white surface so it is a challenge in thinking. Your tips are very helpful, thank you

Great video! This is a very important question. I’m thinking about buying The shuffle art brush pens, I just wanted to check with you if those will turn out completely visible on toned tan paper or will the colours look translucent if I use it on the paper.
Hi! Thank you so much for watching 😊 I’ve never personally used brush pens or watercolors on toned paper so I don’t know how they would turn out. I think there’s some other videos on RUclips though 👍🏻

Great demo Amy! I use gray and tan toned paper when drawing to get the best highlights and mid-tones. I agree that it brings out the the tones and depth much better than straight white paper. It certainly pops! PS: I also use the Derwent pencil sharpener that have you shown in this video : )

Should I buy brown or grey toned paper. Which give more town to a draw ? Pls tell me what helps you more because I wanna get one!
I really like both toned papers and I think it’s up to you which paper you get 😊 I like using the gray paper for drawings with cooler tones, so for example drawing a white cat, still life, and structures, and I like drawing on the tan paper if I’m drawing warmer toned drawings such as portraits, etc 😊

Thankyou for for replying, that was helpful, l have tried many store brought drawing papers some are detter than others, l have never tried strathmores papers yet. It seems to be the paper most artists use, l try drawing faces in graphite, derwent and faber castle and a black pencil for really darks,. Thanks again for your help
Strathmore is a really good paper to use for portraits. I really love the Strathmore Bristol smooth series paper for portraits & dry mediums. I think you will like that paper! 😊

are the drawing papers in the stores any good or not? or is it just strathmores and arches papers for drawing, l am finding hard to find a suitable paper , l have used derwent , micador and born to draw papers andvother cheaper papers. I need some advice Thankyou
Hello Karen, thank you so much for your comment. I think the most important things to consider to help you find the right paper is two things - the type of paper & paper thickness. Some types/ thickness of paper suits certain mediums and styles of art better. For example if you draw a lot of portraits in coloured pencil I would recommend using a smooth surface paper as this will help you create smooth textures, and I’d recommend a paper thickness of at least 100lb/ 200gsm approx so you can create enough layers without damaging the tooth of the paper. If you were using a solvent or paint thinner with coloured pencil a solvent is considered a wet medium so I’d strongly recommend using a watercolour paper of at least 140lb/ 300gsm approx as it is thicker and able to absorb the solvent. Any paper brand can be suitable for your art - even a store bought paper/ cheaper brand.. just make sure it is the right type of paper to suit your drawing medium & style of art. I really hope this helps but please let me know if you need anymore advice!

does anyone read these comments anymore, I'm looking for advice. I tried alcohol to blend and my portrait started to bubble and peel. I'm a new drawer and its my best work I'm desperate to save. any suggestions would be amazing thank you
Hello Laura, I always respond to my comments. I don't use alcohol to blend my coloured pencils so I've never personally had this experience before. However, I have had issues with getting blotchy results from solvents before and it was because I was using a smooth paper. If your paper is too smooth it doesn't absorb the solvent properly and then it sits on top of the paper and warps the paper. It is best to use a paper with more texture - such as hot pressed watercolour paper. I don't know if there is much you can do in your situation as it seems the alcohol has damaged the surface of the paper, but you could try weighting the paper down with paper weights or placing a tea towel over your drawing and very gently ironing over it to try and flatten the paper. I'm really sorry this happened and I hope you manage to fix it. Good luck!

Hi Jojo! Thank you for your comment. The pencils I am using in this video are the prismacolor premiere pencils. I have a set of 72 pencils but you can buy much smaller sets - I think the smallest set they do is a set of 12 pencils. You can also buy these pencils individually as well. I’m really not sure of the price as prices may vary depending on where you live, but you can buy these pencils online from places like Amazon. When I bought these pencils, I paid around $50 for a set of 72.. but as I said, you can get smaller sets or individuals 😊

Do you have anything on more tones other than the 5 values you used today? I'm wanting to do a character in space, who's been in battle but without the space as background 🤔 great video 👍
I’m really sorry for my late reply! I’m really glad this video helped you! Once you get used to drawing on toned paper you will see that it’s actually really similar to drawing on white or black paper - just the tones are the opposite way round. On white paper, you would focus more on adding in mid and dark values as you are starting with a light value paper, whereas with black paper you would be focusing on light and mid tones… With toned paper you are starting with a mid value first. So I would focus on getting in your light and dark values to get enough contrast in your drawing, and then bring in some more mid tones. Think of where your highlights and shadows are, and use mid tones to transition light and dark tones in together. I hope this helps!
@@AmyLouiseArt I have a Grey tone pad that I'm using as well as a black paper pad both from Strathmore series. My drawing that I was doing doesn't seem right so I haven't finished it cause I don't want to waste my prisma cp, I maybe just over thinking this process 😅 thanks for getting back!
I love toned paper, I have a couple of Strathmore toned tan and toned grey, but my absolute favourite is my clairefontaine Paint-on Gris paper. Such a great multipurpose paper for ink, marker and coloured pencil. If you get a chance please check it out it is worth it.

I use toned paper a lot. I just made a new perfect bound sketchbook with coloured cardstock.
Additional types/methods
1) Use gouache. Gouache is amazing on toned cardstock. It’s super fun
2) cover the tone more than using it as the mid tone. Some of the tone will unify and ‘shine through’ (depends on mediaums opacity’s) this allows a more interesting solid background look AND as I stated the tone ‘shining though’ unifies the art
3) do paper tests and test mixed media on each paper keep these notes to refer to both colour examples and written details.
4) pay attention to how the colour of the toned paper will alter colours layered on top. Some colours like red really alter things. The vibrancy effects things
5) keep in mind the failure and chroma of the paper how dark S light and how vibrant the colour is. This effects everything!
6) get and use various coloured cardstock! Micheals and Staples are good (I’m in Canada your region may vary) absolutely JUMP on sales!
7) mixed media! Try various media and in combination.
8) three value scale option; Very opaque white with very dark black using the paper as the mid tones! This is excellent for composition, thumbnailing and studies of composition. Great for quickly ideation and coming up with environments, other illustration ideas, storyboarding, etc! In such a case use paler toned paper for ‘lighter scenes’ and darker toned paper for ‘darker scenes’!
