I recently came across the artist Pat Southern-Pearce and fell in love with toned paper. Funnily enough I was already bought a Hahnemuhle cappuccino toned sketchbook for a project I am planning for later in the year. We are spending a couple of days in a little seaside town which has many stone buildings and I thought it would be interesting to use toned paper.
I've been musing about buying some toned paper for working with charcoal. My method now is covering the whole paper with a light layer of willow charcoal, adding darker tones, and erasing high lights. You convinced me to go and get a bloc of toned paper. Probably less messy😉
Great video! When I began drawing pencil/charcoal portraits about a year ago I started out with white paper. Then, one day when I was purchasing more sketch books, I saw the tan and grey paper and thought I would give it a try. I really like the toned paper much better.
Thanks for helping me understand why toned is better; I'm a huge Arthur Rackham fan, and I know he used toned or toned his own paper, I just didnt' understand why. now I do, and will follow in his and everyone else's footsteps for more sheen and pristine artworks.
I've just ordered strathmore mixed media toned I use faber castell polychromos pencils cant wait for it to be delivered love your youtube channel cheers for all your tips 👍👍👍
Wonderful video. When I work in watercolor, I always start with an underpainting wash. For a while I was doing all of my drawing on white mixed media paper with a watercolor wash. Getting toned sketch/drawing paper makes so much more sense than buying mixed media paper that can handle the watercolor wash but my brain never connected the dots....
I also love grey paper for coloured pencils. I have only tried prismacolor pencils and what I have drawn is beyond modest, but the drawing had more dimension than with white paper.
U r such a good teacher. Your explanations r so clear & to the point I don't know where to start because u make everything enticing. I'm an art teacher myself after retirement as a hs principal & experienced in most media but I always learn something from watching u. Thanks
Thank you so much for your drawing and painting tips. Inspite of being a fine artist myself, I follow your guidance. There is so much to learn from you and moreover you share your knowledge wholeheartedly. Thank you so much once again 🙏🙏🙏

Really well done. I like the subtle soft brushed on the face. They look killer on that toned paper. Lots of great texture and detailed work in the hair. Excellent piece 👌😊- best of luck on your art and your channel ,and much support from one artist to another. Massive 👍's Up.
You know, I had been attracted to toned paper for some time, but I never really felt like actually trying it. With this video you finally convinced me. I am definitely gonna try it. Thanks for the video. 😀👍
Can you please explain how to rub out charcoal when I’ve tried it it smudges badly then my work is spoilt I have just come upon your site, I love the glass it’s so real I would say you have placed a glass of water on your piece of paper, it’s that real to me what a great job you have done thank you 🙏🏻 for sharing your beautiful talent, I am so great full to you & all the other artists that come on to RUclips if it wasn’t for you Artists, being a BEGINNER it has helped me to draw, I wouldn’t say I’m very good at it but I’m trying so hard I love it 🥰 so much I have to do a lot of rubbing out which frustrates me but I know it’s practice practice practice, I just turned 83 yrs of age & I feel it’s keeping my mind active so once again I thank you so much,👍🏻 Beautiful work, your’s truly Roger from down under Australia 🇦🇺 👴🏻🧠🦘🦘
Thank you for making this video! I’ve been curious about toned paper, and after seeing your video, I am definitely going to go buy some to try and draw on now. :)
I wish he went into different tones a bit more. I mean the blues etc I get thats a specialty, but the grey vs cream etc would have been nice, I have some cream and I find it hard to go really dark with.... Also worth considering because framing is so expensive, if you want to frame your art with a NON custom framer and just buy a premade frame, you are going to get a white or black matte with it, and a white or black matte on toned paper can distract from your art in a bad way especially on cream, as you want to match your matte usually to the darkest or lightest tone in your drawing which ever you have the least of to bring it out. White bringing out the highlights and black bringing out the shadows. Therefore putting a white matte around your cream paper just flattens all your highlights killing the contrast of your drawing :(
I think the real reason is that the layers or channels in visual cortex are a "toned paper" (medium grey) and each edge is a pair of white and black edge.
I was hoping for some ideas of how to fill in the values. Which value on the value scale to you assign to the paper color from your reference. No clue included here. 😐

The value discussion is huge for me. When I use white paper, I'm working double time to ratchet down the value. It's a lot of work. Thank you!!
