As a retired funeral director it saddens me to see stories like this where business owner took advantage of family's trust. I will push back on some generalizations in the comments: most funeral directors are honest people, doing a job to help grieving families in their time of need. There are bad apples in most any field and the funeral business is no different. I can surmise from what was said in the video that a new generation of an established family business took over a trusted funeral home then saw where they could embezzle money for their own gain. They used the goodwill of the previous generation to fleece the community. I believe that those who are looking to "cash in" also neglect the services they are obligated to provide, like that letter that was likely meant to be in the casket with Grandma.
Every state has it's own laws regarding "pre-need" money (person / family preplans a funeral and pre funds it). Some states allow a funeral home to keep a percentage off the top as part of it's operating cost, for time spent making the arrangements and setting up the financial vehicle to hold the money, other states require 100% of the money to be held in trust until the time of the funeral service. Some states consider pre-need arrangements to be a contract obligating the families to use the specific funeral home at the time of death and others do not. Some states allow the funeral home to manage it's own pre-need money and accounts and others require it be managed by a third party financial institution.
I always used a pre-need trust fund company in my state that opened up individual accounts for every arrangement. It was the person's money, in an account with their name and social security number. The money was invested and earned interest, statements were sent to the person every quarter, they had full access to the money at any time if the wanted to withdraw it and I had no access to it. At the time of the funeral the next of kin had to sign a claim form that was sent to the trust fund with my final bill, also signed by the next of kin. I was paid the amount of my bill and anything above that amount was refunded to the next of kin.

I'm curious what parents are letting their little ones run around abandoned funeral homes, let alone funeral homes in general, as they contain chemicals harmful to adults in certain levels of exposure. But I totally get your point for sure.

My family owns and operates a Funeral Home, and I couldn't imagine losing it over greed or personal gain. This looks like it was very nice until i'll assume vandals got a hold to it before it could have been sold, things auctioned, and records moved/disposed. I'll assume once they were kicked out were told that they couldn't touch/get anything.

It's kind of strange that they wouldn't have had an auction and give the proceeds to the families who were cheated. Lots of valuable antiques. I'm surprised that the good stuff hadn't been stolen. If it was such a lucrative business, why didn't someone else take it over. $650 million embezzled? It doesn't seem that a single funeral home could generate that kind of money.
Oh, that radio you saw, it's NOT an antique. It's one of those cheap-o all-in-one stereos that sold for maybe $50. in the 2,ooo's.

Also at 11:07 you will see him discovering even more caskets down a dark hall. There are what appears to be blood droplets on the white wall right of screen and some on the clothing material top of casket. Like a wound in motion flung blood on the wall and then on the casket. Just speculation but strange. He took more notice to the abandoned caskets and condition of the place and as a spectator its easier to see the other things. Awsome video , glad its not a bunch of giggity chad geeking off every creak or mouse movement. Sad to think how many funeral homes are not in it for the service still. There was one in arkansas that was burying right over others and reusing the slab but milling the names off and sanding it up.😂 my dad says fuck it burn me im dead. So guess this type of end isnt for everyone.😅

That is a good reason to cremate--not only is it cost savings, but helps eliminate theft. Pre-planned cremation is the way to go. I would love to buy that old grandfather clock (and chances are it may still work). There are some things in there worth getting. That old radio would also be worth some money. So sad people just abandoned this and did not attempt to sell some of the stuff.
