This is an old one linked to viewing of the LA Harbor railway which I watched earlier. Fascinating how these huge distributive power consists are assembled and sent on their way in rapid order.

Oh yes i was like holy smokes that was massive and awesome and the drone idea was cool and i thought it was cool how massive the cranes were and the trucks i did see looked tiny definitely a fascinating industry to be in and i totally get why they would not want people trespassing not d to being dangerous but due to its size you'd get lost lol 26 miles i think you said good lord thats huge

Great Video. I was a Model RR hobbyist when I was a kid so I would visit ALL the train yards I could and talk to the engineers and switchmen etc. Good memories. Great Rock Quail hunting in Barstow except the Chuckkers knew to hang by the Rail Yards out of the hunting zone!
They do't like people around these days. sad.
I really enjoy watching your coverage of the ports and the railyards. I work intermodal on the east coast fixing the rail cars and I love learning through your videos the big picture of where it's all going/coming from.

great video but the BNSF doesnt share tracks with southern pacfic but with union pacfic and they dont switch out intermodule trains at barstow most are run through trains they crew change and go

Yep; It's us, again. Been holding comment to see the second, "Brilliant" installment on this subject. As they say elsewhere on British Tele, "Well done you!". We railroad yesteryear, but Warren Buffet is a train guy, and I am into what his and shareholders at his investment firm do with the BNSF. I marvel at modern railroading, and now the story is well rounded from the source to the distribution. Keep on cranking out the high quality subjects.
Jeanne Uzar Thanks! We were talking last night and looking at stats on the Harbor (Harbour) The 4 track link out of the harbor is now moving oner 100 miles of containers out of the Harbor and just as many back in, EVERY DAY. WOW.

If you think railroads aren't busy look at the next stack train and count the containers. That would be that few semis on the nation's interstates. There is a local paving company that gets its sand for asphalt completely on a short line railroad here because they couldn't truck it in cheaper. Its about a 90 mile trip. I'm surprised they haven't brought in asphalt tankers yet.

At 8:05 the trains were moving east toward Needles and beyond, not north.
It’s difficult in the switching yard to say what direction they’re going to be heading. There’s so many trains moving.
I was looking for a container the whole video but we were really not following a container.

When I lived there when the ground moved you paused to see how big it was going to get. If it was not building, you ignored it. One more little shake.
Funny thing I’ve noted about our little speck of dust in space. Some places have earthquakes; others have hurricanes, or volcanoes, or tsunamis, or other foul stuff happening and a few lucky places have two or more at the same time. Is anyplace really safe?
Almost forgot, big rocks falling out of the sky… Granted, not very often but it does tend to make for a very bad day.

I’ll bet that it’s a massive facility. I know there’s a similar facility nearby there and I’m just not sure what but you see huge cargo planes flying in and out of there all the time
@@ToyManTelevision The planes are for the light stuff. I have saved video on USMC rail ops Barstow. They help US Army with their rotations to Ft. Irwin NTC and jointly train in Railhead ops. Another great video on a classification hump yard is about the "Bailey Yard" North Platte Iowa. It gets deleted now and then, but is a great video.
Well one of the Great things about Cajon pass is that 3 Railways used the pass and i dont have the year at hand when the UP & Santa Fe Merg Track right through the pass this was the case ... UP had a Main line which at Mile Post 68.2 split from the Santa Fe and climbed the steeper grades on the right of your shot that u have of the area .. Also in the 70s or 80s SP put the line in to Tehachapi and they also had track age right in the pass..
You talked alot about the the cargo and you are exactly right on the rates at which the railroad does buisness now, but i am guessing u also know that roughly 60% of the cargo is offloaded to trains, Shipped from the West Coast to the East Coast, Loaded on Container ships again and sent to Europe. This is to avoid the Panama Canel and is actually cheaper & a faster way to ship.
Now saying that .. The Railroads are concerned about the changes to the Panama Canal and with that the new class of Super Container Ships that will be able to fit through the canal after the upgrade. Also the Drop in time that it takes ships to wait and pass through the canel .. Which i was told to be upwards of 3 months just to get through the wait list (this i hope has changed)

ALL of these move by trucks at some point. Even if only around the port. But they can be on and off so fast!!! Not sure what the new Panama will do. really change things!!! East coast ports expect a boom! Yet, as they are so good at doing it this way, and LA can mover the freight, any change may be slow. I'll bet the big winner is Rotterdam.
Agreed .. since they wont need to off load and on load cargo cross country ..Rotterdam might double or triple in size

So where do trains going up Tehachapi originate from?
The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert. Mojave is the middle of nowhere. They do have however, one of the worlds biggest airports. WHY?? Its where airlines send retired airplanes to be sold. For rebuilding or scrap. At any given tome there are perhaps 100 large jets, including jumbo jets parked there. Its also a space port!! The Spaceship one and two projects are there. The first private spaceships. After a crash a couple of years ago they are not flying, but soon will be selling rides into space from there.
Do trains from the harbor go up through Bakersfield, through Tehachapi, and on to Barstow...I did see tankers and double stacks
Not as a rule I THINK. Most traffic going east is up Cajon Pass. The line from the ports north through Bakersfield also takes a bunch of traffic from the port(s) but mostly any traffic heading north. But that line crossing to Barstow is always busy, great shot cut for trains that don't need to go to LA.

"Railroads never been busier"?!?!?!? Since Obama took office rail traffic has declined every year and industries and customers are going out of business or moving out of the USA. You are very wrong about that, read Progressive Rail or Railway Age magazines. I work in the industry and have seen this first hand.
Got the facts from the Pres of UP. Politics aside, with all the importing rail traffic is up. Way up. in 2008 most equipment was in storage.
Toy Man Television container traffic may be up in some ports, but UP's President has a stock price to keep inflated. north American bridge traffic has been and will continue going down as soon as the new Panama Canal opens. besides, more containers don't mean more rail jobs. with PTC, trains will run themselves in 5-10 yrs. Industry customers traffic is down from even 2008, there are less rail cars in storage because there are less rail cars. if you notice cars from the 70s are disappearing due to the 40yr scrap rule. UP has a stock price to protect, so of course they're going to tell people that traffic on UP is up.
This is part of a feature we are working on for another producer. Getting to interview many great people! In 2008 the economy was crashed. Railroads were parking equipment and laying off people. Even when the new canal opens, that traffic will need to land somewhere. The east coast ports are a mess, but I'll bet money is spent fixing them up as the traffic will need to go somewhere. Jobs are down, yes. Because the loss of union power and fewer people needed to run a train. Or a port. Or a factory. Of the jobs being lost, not all are lost to foreign manufacturing. For every 7 jobs lost, 3 are lost to "automation". And most of the new jobs are tied to the globalized trade. Container traffic is up because most of the traffic is importing and exporting.
