    That hand scene hit me.
It was the hands that helped Hirugami through volleyball, and yet he'd hurt those same hands.

I’d never thought a topic as serious as self harming would be a part of the story, yet it is so overlooked by society so it’s actually quite helpful and important to mention this in any kind of story. Not saying it’s necessary but it’s very hard and interesting at the same time how our own mind can be the cause of our biggest pains and aches

In a way, I think his arc is quite the opposite to Kenma's. Kenma starts off as someone who doesn't particularly like or dislike volleyball, he does it "just because", and throughout the series he gradually learns to have fun when playing and even liking the sport itself, taking that "step forward", while Hirugami is someone who always thought he had to go all out and absolutely adore this sport, but he came to the realisation that it's okay if he takes one step back and isn't as passionate about it. Of course, I'm not saying they have the same arc just in opposite ways, because they are their own characters and they have plenty of differences in their arcs, but it's something interesting to think about

Hirugami is the most relatable character for me. I was a swimmer til I graduated from college last year and around the time in between my last year of high-school and freshman year of college I went super critical with myself and would dwell on races I thought I blew. I didn’t enjoy swimming cause I expect too much of myself. My college teammates helped me enjoy it, freshman is my transition year, in sophomore year I started to enjoy races because of them and slowly understand that progress involves failures. My senior year started after Haikyuu’s manga ended and at that point I’ve learned of the character arcs of Haikyuu on top enjoying training with my college team. “I’m not gonna die if I blew this race”. I enjoyed my last college season the most-I daresay performed the best through my college career. Leaving me content with how I ended my 17-year-long swimming career.
Dang thats long. I love your work

Caeleb Dressel said himself that there's no such thing as a perfect race. Even in his analysis of his swims in the Olympics, he points out mistakes he made even though he's still the best in the world at his events. Once you realize nobody's perfect, it takes that unnecessary mental strain off and you perform way better.

That's why I keep telling people Haikyuu is so much more than just volleyball. There are so many eyeopening messages - messages that sometimes are really simple but get overIooked as we hustle and stress through life. There are so many great characters that represent so many different types of personalities and struggles and are portrayed in realistic and thus relatable way that we can learn from or find inspiration in. So I really think everyone should read Haikyuu, especially the teens and young adults. I wished Haikyuu existed before I graduated highschool. I could've really used the different perspectives it provided for life and where to go with it in adulthood.

"nobody's going to die if i messed up"
"but now, if i screw up, it's possible for someone to die, but it's fine. i understand now that sometimes things aren't going to be fine, and that's okay. besides, i'll be doing something i like."
the conclusion to hirugami's character is so beautiful, his journey is one that surprised me. telling someone that its ok to stop playing volleyball in a volleyball story is a power move. being a vet even when the stakes are higher, because that's what he wants to do, how he has grown a lot.
his story is definitely one of the things that elevates hoshiumi's chapter, which in my opinion one of the best in haikyuu. circling back to his past, connecting it to hoshiumi's mindset, Furudate is such a genius.

The fact that there’s so many video essays on different aspects of this anime shows just how thought out it was. Furudate included so many life lessons for each character that all have their own arc. Not one anime can do it the way Haikyuu can. Shows just how special and how rare of a gem this anime is.

The amount of analysis and video essays you've done for this one story just speaks to how grand and special Haikyuu is in its character writing and absolutely incredible world building.
Truly no sports anime or hell, even shows in general imo, has been able to exhibit so many personal stories, their own struggles, their own paths, and their own unique place in different peoples hearts as Haikyuu.
Nearly every team from the beginning of the show, to the end of the manga, has a person who is dealing with something that is similar, and/or will inspire a real life person out there, even if they haven't experienced the story. It is truly a craft that can and will resonate with every viewer with its charming but extremely relatable characters.

From an athletes point of view I genuinely love how accurate and specific haikyuu depicts there characters and there story . I’ve had many teammates throughout my career and each can be displayed the variety of stories they tell . This one hits home because I fell outta love for my sport for the longest . Having high expectations and people rate you highly from a young age is truly a double edged sword . Mentally it can kill you . Reasons why when I have a kid I’ll always tell them even if they are amazingly talented in something , I’ll always remind them to make sure they take care of there mental health and that they are happy doing what they do .

!! Time skip manga spoilers !!
I think Hirugami's obsession to getting better to the point of burn out is sort of similar with Oikawa and Hinata's Argentina and Brazil Arc. I don't remember the exact line or chapter, but I think it was implied that the two of them are really suffering with enjoying volleyball with all the pressure there is on them. Only difference is they were both reminded of their passion and love for volleyball when they met and played with each other in brazil.

This is exactly what happened to me.
Cause ever since i could remember, I played soccer. I was always serious about it, dreaming about top colleges fighting for me, being an Olympian and etc. i had big dreams and the ambition to follow.
I was involved with other sports, but as time went on i quit them for soccer. My dad told me never to quit anything, to just bear with it until the end, and i never really thought of quitting soccer since i was having fun and was good. Really good.
But I always got rejected from my town A team, and was placed on the B team for stupid reasons (ie; we. Didnt think you’d accept since someone on the younger tema didnt accept because they wanted to eb with their sibling, we aren’t looking for anybody right now, theres no more open spots etc etc)
And that of course crushed my spirit as a 10 year old. And I always listened to how my parents said it was unfair. And so i decided to prove them wrong and get revenge.
So i worked 10x harder, put more pressure on myself as i kept rising the ranks, kept getting better and even got a few nicknames. But in middle school, my love for the sport was quickly starting to burn out as i joined a soccer program where its high intensity and just- full of astounding players. There was a group called ‘the focus group’ where the best of the best from the program would go after getting invited.
And so with becoming better than all the people in my town, and getting into he focus group. I was just a tea kettle of stress
i joined another team that was connected with the program i went to (the coaches were friends, that’s all) and there i met one of my favorite people in the world, my coach saw potential in me in how hard i work.
And that just fueled me to work harder. Noting, i was severely depressed at the time and had awful mental health, so with how youre reading this image a 13 year old full of hormones, anti social, an eating disorder, and awful mental health reacting to someone putting faith in them.
I also wasnt working as hard as i make it out to seem, as a lot of times i would just work hard in practice and not really practice at home
So everything started to seep out of the kettle and i kept running myself rigid, juggling everything personally and socially. I was burning out fast
And I was aware of the fact that i was burning out. As i started to cry, pretend ti be sick, and lie to get out of practices with the program, staying silent and anger that I had to go to regular practice. (Mind you me and my sister were on the same team)
But then i got sick, as to where i had to be hospitalized. And so for a few months i got to breathe. I was able to take a break from everything and was able to breathe. Trying to build myself up again.
But my sister quit to presue dance which was weird to me. I had quit dance for soccer yet she’s doing the opposite. I asked her how she was able to quit, and i was seriously debating it, but i fooled myself into thinking that i loved soccer. I think i still did. But i realized years later that the moment you think about something else is the moment you stopped loving the original thing.
So it kept getting worse, but i kept getting closer to my goals. Trying out for cops, getting to talk about the focus group with the program coach. But enter highschool.
I got sick again- this time it was worse. And this time i looked forward to no more soccer. But then COVID hit and i was in paradise. I was actually able to heal, started practice soccer on my own and unfortunately still kept going to the program and my other team disbanded.
Months later i joined another team and the other kids were jealous so as i tried putting myself out there i got some what alienated. But i got a call from my old coach inviting me to join his college show case team- a top ranked college showcase team at that. Where the best of the best people went to compete to play for colleges.
I got invited to try out and i was the only one from my old team to make it. And I was crying when he said that he would take me under his wing.
But a few months later i hit my breaking point and for the first time in my life, quit something. It was the program. My illness caused me to get ill when anxious, and everytime Monday arrived (the day i went) i threw up. Cried, lied etc to not go
And i finally realized that i had a choice. And that i achieved my goal of going to the focus group- even though i never really played for them i was accepted
And that’s when I joined taekwondo and started volleyball…
I feel like this has gotten to long already. But hirugami is an amazing character, and i wish that I was able to recover like he did. But unfortunately that’s not in my cards :)
But now I’m happy to be a prodigy martial artist and finally be on a volleyball team. I still am fighting up hill battles as my coach doesn’t want to let me go. But i don’t think of this as quitting, but instead of retirement as i realize how much pain and grief soccer has caused me, as well as some friendships and good memories. But i think it’s time to move on (though my mom says I’m letting the town team win, i beg to differ)
Sorry for the vent/ long story

No I completely understand what your going through! I started out playing soccer I absolutely loved the sport but then I had an emergency surgery on third grade. I used that to time reflect and I realized that I did love the sport but it wasn't *my* sport. It has too many memories attached to it and I needed something different. Then I moved to Tennessee where I fell in love with swimming and volleyball. I now know that some things in life just aren't meant to happen no matter how hard you try but it doesn't mean to give up hope on your dreams....you just might reach them in a different way. Personally my dream is to go to the Olympics and I have been told by my coaches and even pros that I have the potential. Now I just have to use it. I just moved to a different country and have to start over with the clubs but I won't let that stop me!❤️

I too started to realize I was like Hirugami as well, especially when I saw the hand scene and it represented self harm in a way for me. I too realized that I had a similar mindset to him and realized that I was giving myself too much pressure as well. I kept thinking everything was black and white between giving it your all or not trying in the first place. I love Hirugami so much, and there’s a little detail that I never noticed until my most recent reread through the manga. When he first got into his dorm, he set up a photo of him and his dog, something he seemed to care about a lot because it was on the same level of him putting up a volleyball poster. But as he fell deeper and deeper into his expectations of himself, the books he was reading to help him practice covered up the photo. Volleyball was drowning out every other aspect of his life because he thought it was supposed to be the center of his life.
But now, he’s a veterinarian, and he says to Hoshiumi that it’s something he enjoys doing, even if the mistakes he makes have a lot higher consequences.
Him releasing himself of his own expectations gave him confidence not only in volleyball, but also in other aspects of his life, which is just really beautiful.

Unfortunatelly, this reminds me of myself. I used to play a sport for 10 years, and I was really good at it, but I never liked it. I didn't quit because everyone had great expectations of me, and I didn't want to disappoint them. But when I eventually gathered the courage to quit, everyone was surprised, and I got isolated and a lot of hate for that. My family, especially my father, were really upset. I went through a depression for this reason, and suffered a lot.
I just want to tell everyone that is doing something that they don't enjoy just for somebody else's expectations, that you should quit as soon as possible, and not let the situation agravate.

It's so weird finishing haikyuu after I have grown in my own life. When I first started this series I probably wouldn't have understood just have impactful the idea of, "a mistake won't kill you is". Now, it just feels like second nature. Thats how I live my life. I do things because I want to do them, not because I feel beholden to them. While I might not like the act of writing a paper, or reviewing for a test, I like the outcome. And thats something that has totally changed my outlook on life.

i play volleyball im uni and i have been getting stressed over training when I miss a point or fail a serve. this and what my friend have said to me really helps me realise the path I'm going down. I was talking to my friend and he looked at me and said "no one cares as much as you do about making a point or a play. you try to be the best on the team when you should try and make the best team. you care to much and get hurt when it doesn't work. take a break you need it" now I've just finished my break and I've come back and I've felt better on that court gave my reason as to why I should play on that team to my coach. For those who play any sport and end over caring like me or like the immoveable hirugami hear me now, take that needed break go have a day to yourself watch films eat junk food or go to the gym. what ever you do, do it free.

I have no words to describe how much Haikyuu!! means to me. I often say, on the one hand I admit I feel some level of shame because /mere/ fiction can mean a lot to my life. Yet, on the other hand, I understand that how much something, or someone, means to me is no body else's business but mine... even if, in this case, people call it /mere/ fiction.
Every single character is so relatable, I can never do justice appreciating them in words. You always convey their personality and their relatability in ways that I can never do. So, thank you. 🙏🙏
When it was announced that the manga was ending in 2020 I was devastated because some other titles I've followed have run for 20-30 years. "Why can't Haikyuu!! be the same???" I was beyond sad... but, it's here, isn't it? The story is right here, in front of me. I should just follow what you've done, re-read and re-watch it whenever I want to. I'm sure I will learn something new with every re-experience.😁😁 Thanks a lot for the reminder.🙏🙏
I remember tearing up when he intentionally hurt his knuckles on the rough wall. Yes, it was uncomfortable to see but it was THE representation of all of us who've been there, done that. Hurting ourselves in the pursuit of meeting our own expectations. So, while it was difficult to digest, it was necessary. Furudate-sensei is such an amazing story maker, a wonderful story teller, I don't think I've smiled and cried (equally plenty) with any other titles as much as I have with Haikyuu!!
Oh, I'm rambling now. I'm sorry. Anyways, I just want to say thank you for making these videos and sharing with us all. They are such a lovely reminder about why I fell in love with Haikyuu!! in the first place. 🙏🙏☺️
Take good care you there. And stay safe& healthy. 🤜🤛😀
P.S. Please, give Mob Psycho a try if you have some spare time. I'd really like to know what you think about it. Biggest hugs from the other side of the globe. 🤗🤗

Another great video! you're making me want to go back and re-read the stuff that season 5's gonna be on, but because I don't remember so much I'm looking forward to being surprised again, so I'm not sure what to do lol.
the rest of this has so many I's in it lol, just me relating to the video, doesn't really add anything... but anyway, another video that made me self reflect a ton, good job :D looking forward to what you've got planned next
I always read up to the end of season 4, then skip to the end of nationals (i read the whole thing years ago, just as the last arc was being released. but I read through it so fast i don't remember too much)
i thought i was relating pretty heavily to this at first, I'm pretty hard on myself especially when playing games (on that side, I go back and forth between relaxing and having fun, to trying to win and get better. been stuck at champ 2 in rocket league for like a year or more doing that, but that's fine)
with uni work tho, I've got a bigger problem... you said it was based on beating yourself up over the smallest of things. The thing is, my stress is that I haven't done any work. it's starting it, or lack thereof, that stresses me out, so I'm not sure this one's the right fit for that scenario...

Yeah I feel you for sure dude, I know exactly what it’s like stressing over tasks you have to start but simply don’t. I’m kind of in a similar boat myself with uni, but hey keep your head up and do what you can without burdening yourself too much!

And another godly video. If it weren't for your videos I honestly wouldn't have learned all the lessons haikyuu had because when I first watched it was like "Oh wow an anime about the game i play" and just swept through it but after I watched one of your videos I decided to rewatch it and pay attention to everything this time. That honestly was one of the best decisions of my life because I learnt so many lessons and to view the bigger image overall. Keep the great work with the videos I am surprised that you have such a small amount of subs but with this content I'm sure you'll reach the goal you want.

The first time he appeared on the screen, he immediately got my attention. Like, there's this invisible force that pulled me immediately. Now, after watching this video of yours, maybe I know the reason now. As an only child who's father weren't that present during my hard ships in life, I had to learn to stand up for myself. I subconsciously set crazy expectations to myself. Even now, I always think that maybe I forced my younger self to grow quickly. Sure, I had my fun times on my childhood but that was only till my mother was still alive. After her death, I began to isolate myself from the people that I know. I grew up thinking that I shouldn't make a mistake and be always on top so I won't have my father disappointed in me.
Right now, on my 20s. I don't know how or when it happened but I heavily relate to Sachiro of not just wanting to meet those expectation anymore. I let myself be free. That it is okay to make mistakes because no one's gonna die from it.

I really need to work on this myself. I find my mindset is truly a shackle to my performance in sport, even when I'm just playing casually. "Oh, I should have done X" or "Y was an easy play to make, why did I mess it up?"
I messed it up or made that mistake cause I am overthinking it and placing waaay to much pressure on myself. Its so automatic I barely even know I am doing it.

  • @yannenenenen
    @yannenenenen 2 года назад +1

I can relate to hirugami and when I read this chapter I was even unaware that tears were already coming out from my eyes, the reason to this is because whenever I used to make a mistake at school something below 100 wasn’t allowed in my perspective every time I get something lower than the highest score you could get in either test, quizzes, assignments and etc.. I’d get angry and be like “ughh why could I think of doing that!?” Or “I’m so stupid” and then I’d cry- I hurt myself because that was my set punishment so I could push myself to get the best grades I possibly could. Sometimes I wouldn’t sleep at night since I was studying and reviewing new topics that would be in the next semester, Then I’d go to school after drinking a ton of coffee ☕️ and feel energized...those days where I did get “bad scores” I’d hit myself to the point that one of my fingers are more slanted than straight since it revealed that there was a crack their that if I continued what I was doing one of my finger would break off.. that’s when I realized my unhealthy life style after that whenever I would make a mistake I wouldn’t do anything to myself not beat myself up mentally or physically just review dither topic for 10 minutes then done. It was more peaceful than I thought and I was happy I never had any hobbies besides reading/watching anime/manga’s because I thought they were useless to have but after that I grew more hobbies like drawing and now drawing is what makes me happy the most I go to an art school now and I’m happy where I am today still a bit stress but after watching anime or reading manga’s I’d feel energized.
I hope you are doing well and please don’t overwork yourself. if you force yourself to try and enjoy making videos than it won’t be enjoyable to watch since it would seem like you are just sad whenever you do this- Whenever you wanna take a break just take it! But please inform us or we’ll think you uh died 💀 (mostly me)
    Remember enjoy life YOLO
    👀SPOILER ALERT!!
And IF YOU WATCH MCU I WILL BE EVIL AND TELL YOU THAT IN ETERNALS ICARUS IS A TRAITOR AND DIES 👹 that is all 🤗

There are two sides to people wanting to be better at anything. One side of the spectrum is pure motivation, a pure want to do something because the person wants to. The other end is pure discipline. Doing something because it’s needed, not because they want to. No matter how much the person hates it, they work at it. In most athletes and most sports it’s, on average, a mix of both, but sometimes we get players on the extremes.

I remember the lightweight UFC champion said on his way to his title bout he looked outside of his car and realized that 99.9% of people did not care whether or not he was the champion. He described that as a liberating feeling. In the grand scheme of things, it really isn't a big deal. Nobody's gonna die. All he can do is his best, and if you fail - whatever. That's all you have to do to succeed.

Also, everyone remember to be safe rn!! Covid is back and it suckss. Take care of yourself and also that small plant outside your house or, inside. Remember to relax as harsh said and don't be stressed a lot. Sometimes taking a step backing breathing in and moving forward doesn't necessarily solve the problem but makes it a bit easier to tackle. Frankly, it's okay to have burnouts once in a while. Just hit the stop button, sit back, gather your thoughts, relax, go out and take a deep breath, anything that could calm you down, and when you are ready, hit the reset button and start over. We all bound to face burnouts at any point in our lives, we are human after all. Just know that everyone is able and capable to reset and start over.

I like that Hirugami is a foil to Hinata on and off court: off court their origin stories are complete oppsite, one's gifted with the right physique but struggle with finding the motivation to keep going, one's short but with infinite motivation to overcome the challenge; on court Hinata is the ultimate decoy that specialize in distracting defenses, and while Hirugami is the inmovable wall

there's something that keeps me up all night about hirugami
while in high school he played volleyball as of ( you can stop any time , nobody is gonna die if you stopped anyways)
i loved this concept and kept it in mind ,,, but then comes the time skip to surprise us telling us that hirugami is now a veterinary student !
now the concept of ( nobody is gonna die if you stopped / failed ) cannot be applied whenever he feels like ( I think , NO I AM SURE i don't like veterinary after all )
if you already talked about that in the video then excuse me i have and exam tomorrow i didn't watch the whole thing :)

    • @whenwetalkaboutnature4903

No, his chosen profession is not discussed in this video.
I hope I understand your comment correctly. Do you mean that if now he suddenly decides to quit being a vet, someone (some animals) will die?
I hope my understanding is correct. English is not my mother tongue, if my understanding is wrong, I apologize in advance. I'm sorry. 🙏🙏🙏
While I can see why you have that perspective, I believe it's more about /us/, the individual.
It's about how /we/ will be alright,
/we/ will not die even if we choose to stop doing something that we've been doing for years.
I believe, it includes our choice of major in the university and/or our profession after graduation.
If you know Ali Abdaal, a doctor turned productivity youtuber... he made a video where he explained why he chose to quit medicine for good. I won't be able to explain as clearly as he does (I'm sorry) but basically, on the grand scheme of things, it's the system that saves lives, not necessarily the individuals. If one individual decides to quit, another individual will replace them in the system, to continue the operation/implementation of the system, to help save lives. I think it's similar in vet med, too.
In this case, for example, Hirugami is burnt out and needs to take a break for a year to heal. We do not -- should not, count how many animals' lives he cannot save during the period that he is recovering. It's unfair.
or let's say, even if he realizes he doesn't like vet med after all and decides to start studying another major or learning other skills to eventually change profession, we cannot ever -- should never, judge him about how many lives are lost because he has chosen to quit being a vet.
We can pour nothing from an empty cup.
      If we're burnt out,
or we fall out of love,
      or lose our fundamental 'why',
and what we need right now is to take care of ourselves first -- then it's absolutely necessary to do just that.
      Take care of ourselves.
      Help ourselves and heal first.
      Survive first.
And it can mean that we need to take a break or, even, quit.
Some people might think we are being selfish by putting ourselves first... but I believe it's a way to survive.
If we're still here, we can still be of help for others in the future.
If Hirugami is well, regardless of what profession he has in the end, vet or non-vet, there will always be opportunities where he can be of help for others. He may, or may not, save more animals' lives, but one thing is for sure: he still has the chances to contribute to the society he is in. As long as he takes care of himself.
