Only Built 4 Cuban Linx: The Legend Of The Purple Tape

- The year is 1995 and Raekwon is gearing up to drop his debut studio album. Upon dropping an album he would be the third member of the wu-tang clan to drop a solo album after the group’s debut album. Method Man had the first solo album out of the group with him dropping “TICAL” in November of 1994. ODB would be the second one with him dropping “Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version” in March of 1995.
This left some pressure for Raekwon to be the third one to release an album, especially with the standards of being a wu-tang clan member being so high and how monstrous the group’s debut album ended up being.

The first rap album I ever cop with my own money and listened to in its entirety as a young teen. This album was life 🔥

An album that’s beyond the word classic. It’s a masterpiece and a movie… Cinematic imagery! Greatest Rap Album Ever!
This album is intoxicatingly addictive. Hearing the beat to Ice Water drop for the first time is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Once you settle into it, it sweeps you away and always leads you on an unbelievable ride. The highs, the lows, the everything in between this album depicts emotionally… genius stuff. Easily my favorite solo album of the Wu. 100/10.
Fucking ICe water man🤯💥💜💜
That was the only song i didnt like back then. Now it is one of my favorites. Its brand new to me now lol
Agree.. was something else hearing it for the first time..
I still personally hold liquid swords in higher esteem than this album, but the energy ghost and Rae have together cannot be ignored.. certified classic album, and definitely in the top 2 solo projects ever released by the Wu. 👐🏻
This ALBUM is the essence of HIP HOP!!! Lyrics, beats, storytelling, only Nas guest appearance, the skits The Purple Tape, Only Built For Cuban Linx and this ALBUM couldn't have come out at a better time.

Y'all bugging

@@rashaanlemell7974 ok I concur your right 👍
Hands down the greatest rap/hip-hop album ever. The purple tape sound was unheard of. You can listen to it straight through. Classic material frfr...
I agree. PERFECT ALBUM.
@Rob Hunter I have them on the same level. OBC4L edges it just by a millisecond just because of the diversity and cleanliness of the sound.
On my Mt. Rushmore of greatest hip hop albums no question. One of those albums I can enthusiastically rock all the way thru no skips.
This album is a fkn masterpiece. My fav of all the first releases. I just wish INS would have had all the attention he deserved on his first run too.
Ditto on everything you said. 💯
The purple tape masterpiece from the first to the last track
Like i said before: This is a PERFECT album. Skits included.
Facts
Those skits, intro, n outro is what made the tape so dope! And that's why even when Pt. 2 dropped years n years later when it was a Lil Wayne era I copped that!
This is absolutely the WORST comment on this video.
This album is one of the reasons I fell in love wit HIP HOP 🔥🔥🔥
Only built 4 Cuban Linx is a timeless Classic👐👐👐
By the time the Ice Cream single came out on Rap City I already had been rocking the Album. I loved the Ghostface Chef duo. Rae is my favorite MC period. After that, I bought the ODB album which is a classic and I bought Ready to Die. The South was late on the WuTang and Biggie by the time people start feeling them I already had those CDs. I didn’t like the booty bounce crap that South did and I am extremely thankful for the Geto Boys and eventually OutKast: But it’s was the Chef that held it down until the rap world start respecting the South. Thanks for the memories.
The Wu albums dropped when I was in highschool and basically defined my childhood. The purple tape being my favorite. Gritty artistic aspirational yet grounded in reality and sonically unlike anything before. A true classic. Great video my brother
My favorite album of all time. People forget how influential it was. From the Mafioso themes to the vocal heavy samples like ice water. The album continues to influence and should be recognized as such. Flawless.
This is def one of my fav albums and it was actually the first album that I got on CD (along with The Blueprint by Jay-Z). Amazing album and even tho I wasn't around in '95, this album is still somewhat nostalgic to me since I remember listening to it while riding my bike on the way to a summer job a few years back. Even this last summer I had it on heavy rotation. Idk why I always associated this album with the summer but yeah. I mean, it kinda makes sense if you look it from the perspective of OB4CL as the summer Wu album while Liquid Swords is the winter Wu album
Great video as usual and I appreciate this "remaster" of your original video on this album
I definitely want to remaster a lot of my older videos. This album is definitely a summer album while liquid swords is more for the winter. I definitely wasn’t around for this era but this album really does have a place in my heart. A lot of memories riding around to this at full blast
Yh this dropped in the summer’95! During the Source awards run. Hip hop was maaad competitive and fresh !
Pac #1 in the charts 📊 with phat clout coming in from Thug Life Promo run, year prior.
Nas anticipation for a sophomore begins to set-in stone.
BiG/Badboy sweeping up 🧹
…
My favorite album of all time. Bought it in London when it dropped. Had heaven and hell on the fresh soundtrack then heard glaciers and criminology on Tim Westwood. Bought the tape then me and my cousin went to another store and I saw the CD had one extra song so I gave my cousin the tape and bought the CD on the spot. When I played it I could not believe how crazy it was. The beats and rhymes had me in a coma. Nas BODIED his feature too so hearing him was dope on there. Ice water was the song that shook my soul. The vocal loop fucked me up intensely. Rainy Dayz was a highlight too because of how operatic it was. I remember the review in HHC ended with them the album was so good it's scary. When I heard it I knew what they meant. Plus when I finally saw the movie the killer it made this album resonate even heavier seeing how rza based it around that movie.
Thanks for this video. Really like the breakdown you gave this masterpiece.
Rza plan definitely worked because each member attracted the crowd that he planned for them to attract 💯
This albums is absolutely flawless. Ice cream is stil one of my all time favorite beats . I remember getting all the Wu albums the day they came out but this one just hit different.
The Boondocks introduced me to the Guillotine(Swordz) on the Stinkmeaner episode, which then introduced me to this album, then Wu as a whole!!
Boondocks put a lot of people onto different artists. One of my favorite shows of all time! Love the soundtrack
@@cloutcancun forreal though!! I discovered MF Doom there too, ALL CAPS from Oprah kidnapping episode lmao
Heavy Gratitude.
Ps Heaven & Hell , Incarcerated Scarfaces, Glaciers of Ice , Verbal Intercourse, and North Star are 5 of the best songs, ever.
Pps Only Built For Cuban Linx , Liquid Swords and Ironman are 3 of the best albums, ever.
I can Attest to the influence & power this album had back in the summer of '95 being 18 years old growing up in Brooklyn back then every car driving pass was playing different tracks from this album Rae was the king of NY that summer
Biggie was the King & Bad Boy Records was the on top as a whole at the time. Bad Boy was releasing hit after hit at that time.

@@tyliekinc. The Tyliek Show honestly Big was on Hot 97 in heavy rotation but he was getting love but not like how Rae was in the streets Rae had a nice little run with The Purple Tape in the summer of '95 so you don't know what your talking about.
This album takes me back to my years back in high school too. I remember when it came out I was a junior in high school.
@@tylowe78 Ty Lowe me too bro this album dropped in the summer it came out after I graduated high school this album has a special place in my memories of 1995.
@@BKLYN_TZU yes man! I remember a year prior Redman had the red tape for Dare Iz A Darkside. I played that tape so much until the words came off but i still knew which side had which song.
The importance of this album is unmatched.
Best rap album in my opinion....period. production and lyrics impeccable!
28:51 Nas verse on Verbal Intercourse was so great that even when Jay-Z was beefing with him. Jay-Z still referenced/bit the last part of Nas verse in his third verse from his song Never Change that's on The Blueprint album. Nas should've mentioned this in Ether lool
Nas - Verbal Intercourse "From the womb to ta tomb, presume the unpredictable, guns salute life rapidly, that's the ritual"
Jay-Z - Never Change "From the womb to ta tomb, from now till my doom, drink Army from one cup, pass it around the room, that's the ritual"
Never peeped that before jay a Nas Stan fr fr😂.
@@BIG-7777 Jay-Z even bit Prodigy's beginning line "There's a war goin' on outside no man is safe from" from Mobb Deep's song Survival Of The Fittest, in his song A Ballad For The Fallen Soldier from Jay-Z's album The Blueprint² The Gift & the Curse which is while he was beefing with Prodigy
Jay always been a fan.. he was just a scorn fan lashing out for attention 😅
Scarface used it too on Guess Who’s Back
The Guillotine Swordz beat came from the intro to Tical as well
To see videos like this are absolutely amazing. I was 13 years old when this album came out and it was the first WU TANG CLAN album that I bought. Rae and Ghost’s chemistry was absolutely phenomenal. After this I bought Enter The 36 Chambers, Return To The 36 Chambers Dirty Version and Tical. This album started a lot of things and thank you for documenting this time span.
I was walking around high school with my little radio rocking “the purple tape!” At that time there was only two tapes the differed from the standard black or white, Redman had a red tape and Rae had the purple one….this was so fucking dope at the time. Even though all the songs was 🔥, I used to have incarcerated Scarface’s, verbal intercourse heaven and hell and wu gambling’s on repeat !!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Idk if you remember Illegal (Jamal & Malik) but their tape was red. I think it came out 93/94
As a 17 y.o. St. Louis native in '95, ODB's first album welcomed me through the doors of WU. But it was CUBAN LINX that fed me the food. It let me know what Wu-Tang was really about. And I had been feeding on their classics since then.
One of the greatest albums of all time for me and I still play it. The music these days ain't got the same lyrical effort.....just say anything and they'll buy it?.
Back in Alabama This kid in my school just gave me Raekwon’s Built for only Cuban Links CD back in the 96. He didn’t like it and I didn’t have a lot of CDs at the time. Another friend gave me Spice 1’s 187 He Wrote. I had two classic East and West Coast albums just given to me because they didn’t get it.I had to buy them both multiple times since then (CDs scratches from playing them so much).
This was one of the craziest tapes that came out while I was in high school….
Give it up to the Chef. Creating a masterpiece that we have enjoyed for so long.
Amazing album, might have the RZA’s best beats? Hard to decide between this and liquid swords. Love your videos anyway 👍
That would make sense because as stated in the video those 2 albums were two albums where he had nobody messing with him. Those were entirely produced by him. I'm pretty sure Tical was too but nonetheless, I think RZA's best production that I've heard is on OB4CL
Great work on this video man. I’ve just so happened to have been listening to this album on repeat for the past 4 months. So this is dope af
One of the most legendary rap albums of all time...when I was a teenager I had these 15 inch speakers in my living room and we would blast this where you could hear the bass from "Knuckeheadz" down the block and around the corner
Cool channel. Subscribed
Purple Tape...one of my top 5. It's in the whip right now.
This jawn is actually one of my top 5 greatest/favorite albums of all time. I was just listening to it (again) in my car a couple days ago. Damn, man. I literally just can't get enough of it.
I was 15 or 16 when OB4CL. I’m from la ( south central). I ate it up. I didn’t really understand a lot of the references they made (especially ghostface) but I listened to that record a lot at that time. This record peaked my interest in the 5% nation.
I still say this is my favorite album in ANY genre of music…Ive bought it 11 times…😂😂😂
I have 3 purple tapes and have bought the CD at least 7 times
I lost count of how many times i bought this. It kept getting stolen and honestly didn't even care.
This is a perfect album
It's high art
One of my favorites and ever since the first time hearing it because it is one of those weird albums where you can listen through the whole thing without skipping any songs.
Rap opera and CLASSIC
Great commentary. I was born in 1980. I was a teenager when this dropped living in north Philly. My friends and I used to listen to this daily and religiously I know most of the album word for word. I just saw Wu Tang in concert this past weekend at the cannabis festival and life is good 👐🏾
One of the best channels out here. Keep ‘em coming. Representing the DMV 804
Ppl talk about Illmatic/ready to die & they were Kool but that purple tape still puts me in a certain moode. It's like I go somewhere when I hear it, even almost 30yrs later.
12:38 Raekwon's purple tape probably inspired the creators of the 1998 Rugrats movie to color that tape orange lool
This and Infamous are the two best east coast street albums of all time
BEST Ever Period! EAST Coast is #1,2 & 3
"of" the best? LMAO. Nah homie, they BOTH are apart of the HOLY GRAIL. This is a special comment because you're 100% correct, and I think about this all the time.
@@EsauistheCaucasian Read again…SLOWLY lol ..I said THE ….TWO ….BEST
Illmatic is so is Ready to Die
@@tyliekinc. This is the beauty of these classic albums, to have these arguments. We were truly blessed to be given these gems back in the 90's. But I can also break it down like this: illmatic and Ready to die are the GOAT Solo Albums and OB4CL and Infamous are the GOAT group albums. It's only right. (I also rank Ready to Die 4th out of them....).
Classic. They was saying this when it was out Wu Tang forever ♾️
Thanks for sharing! This is my first time ever seeing the promo for, Rae's "Only Built for Cuban Linx". 1/24/23 I didn't know one existed to tell you the truth! Thanks again!
My favorite album of ALL time. Hands down
When this hit the streets in 95 everyone I mean everyone bumped this in there car, house party street…. Fire…. Was 16 when it came out still listen to this day and it takes me right back to those dayz…
This is my favorite Wu Tang album, it’s full of classic songs, and I think overall Wu Gambinos has to be my favorite, but also the intro to this album is crazy, maybe best intro of all time??
Beautiful Video. I hope you do more videos like this one. Breaking down the tracks. I hope you do one for GZA and Ghost.
You did a great job breaking down the history on this video and Liquid Swords.
THE best Wu album......PERIOD!!!
The editing on this joint is fire man!
You be working overtime 😅
My love for this album was born when I heard Glaciers of Ice then Criminology.... I was hype!!! So me and my homie went to the record stores 2-3 times a week, from June until August when it finally was released. We didn't find Rae's joint right away but we found a whole bunch of dope shit. 95 was the bomb because of Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Krs1, AZ, Fat Joe, LL, Smif-n-Wessun + more
Phenomenal video here. Infinite thank yous for this, CC!
One of the best albums ever. Cinematic. Rae and Ghost told a vivid movie filled with all kinds of emotions. RZA's production perfect like always in that era from 93 to 97
Liquid Swords is one of my favorite albums ever. It’s so fire !!!
I used to think the “Killa” tape Rae mentioned on 7th chamber was like a Wu demo or some shit lol
Masterpiece..... Nothing else needs to be said.
Yo the first time I heard Cuban links I was trippin balls on acid at this house party in NY. To this day glaciers of ice reminds me of the visuals I was seeing that night. Crazy memories
I was 10, my friends brother had the knowledge and goods for great tunes and getting to sneak in and hear amazing new music was huge to me in life
Summer 95 I remember like it was yesterday going to get the cassette at my local mom and pop record shop in Brooklyn east New York. After that we went to the weed spot I was 17 at rhe time great memories 💯🇵🇷🔥
Chef was always my favorite. When that purple tape dropped it was the soundtrack for the whole summer. It was played in every car, CD player or Walkman. I played that tape until it popped and I fixed it kept playing it. That album is a timeless classic and him and ghost together are great.
Intro so cold great job Cancun
Man I enjoy these vids so much I love hearing the story about my favorite albums thank you for another great vid
I was just entering adulthood in Milwaukee about a year before moving to Vegas when this dropped. Had the purple tape and honestly that could play all the way through from Knuckleheadz to Heaven & Hell but some of my favorite tracks are Rainy Dayz, Guillotine, Verbal Intercourse and Wu Gambino's. It was almost impossible to outdo Tical and Return of the 36 but Only Built is one of the best albums ever in my humble opinion. Regardless of genre. Masterpiece
Top 5 album in My hip hop collection
me and my bro joke all the time about how many times we bought this album and stole it from the stores and each other lol
i been watchin this vid for weeks cuz i keep stopping to hear all the classics he is referencing!

This album literally changed my life. When I heard Rza production on this album I was amazed inspired and it showed me the possibilities where you can take music. I would love to know what zone Rza was in. My brother actually stole the tape, we got in the car with my cousins and rode and listened. It was so quiet everyone was just blown away
I went od on this shit..I started with 36 chambers right when it came out so I was all the way on board since the protect your neck video..then after Mef vs chef I knew this would be something special..just like every wu project..Wu tang raised me in a very real way
bro much props man, i´d like if you could to break down the importance of new york's mafioso rap specially album such as Biggie's Ready to die, Big l's lifestyles ov da poor and dangerous mobb deep's infamous, G rap's 4, 5, 6 Nas's it was written jay 's reasonable doubt, biggie's life after death and Mobb deep's hell on earth, i mean i dont know you might think i´m crazy but this ones all got something in common of course let´s add ghostface's iron man again much props man

Yo....on Glaciers of ice which is my favorite on the purple tape, you didn't mention 60 sec assassin, who also sang on the track.
When this dropped man I loved hip hop fr fr to this day, that album is a treasure to the world forever that ish sparked that mafioso talk, that fly Versace ish, cables, the wallabees, the RZA was immaculate on the production, the whole clan was shining on the guest spots, the NAS feature, the shark niggaz(biters) intro that sparked Nas and Biggie back n forth all the way to kick in the door to the last real nigga alive, man this album is a Hall of Fame Album, not to many Albums garner the respect this one gets,FACTS.
I was getting this album asap because i was such a Wu Nerd back in my younger days, i just bought every solo project no matter what. For me Wu Tang was quality and we had no reviews or internet back in the days. I remember getting the disc and nearly every track was together with Ghost so pure gold. Great video. Looking forward to seeing your video about Ghostface. 😎
Love Wu tang and this video is well thought out and awesome keep it up love all of the videos you have made.
An interesting idea for another video is Joe budden and his relationship with the industry from his stardom to him being screwed over by Jay Z taking over Def Jam and remixing his hit single without him after Joe asked. to Joe just releasing music and being one of the first artists to start releasing on the internet and being available to his fans almost 24/7 online. Think he was the first to sign to a digital label before the internet really blew up in music. Def would make an interesting video to study his rap career. Tons of drama including getting smacked by wu tang lol.
I'm glad you've done this video
No lie I missed out on this album-
I was on so much music at the time especially Bone Thugs-
Ima have to set aside some time to jam this
I had this album on tape. I don't remember when it dropped but I was put on to WU when I was 14, so 23 years ago.
