Crossing Wales in a Straight Line! Inspired by GeoWizard

- Our latest Straight Line Mission sees Adam & I attempt to cross Wales along a 56km line. Unlike on our Scotland mission last year, this time we decided to let GeoWizard know of our plans ahead of time. With respect to his 'Straight-Line-Mission' legacy, we wanted to give him the opportunity to be the first to cross Wales successfully before our attempt.

Check out Geowizard's attempt here: • Crossing Wales in a st...
Seriously, so much respect to you for informing GeoWizard of your attempt. Giving him a chance at being the first, since he's essentially the father of the idea. You're good people.
Means a lot coming from you Gordon, many thanks!
Also them doing that made geowizard speak about them which has guided me to this channel 🎉
agreed
lol its more genius than admirable. I'd rather have a successful youtube channel than be the first person to cross wales in a straight line
I'm here because of the Wizard. Respect to you guys.
Oh my god, two competing straight line missions released at the same time?! What a treat!
Agreed. Its made my week
Yeah exactly. Gonna enjoy this so much
Maybe Tom did start a campfire on someone's land... But he sure didn't wear the world's most visible, bright magenta gloves 😂
He wears no gloves then cries about how his hands hurt.
the Wizard certainly specced more into the stealth talent tree. I mean, 10 minutes into the video and two farmers random encounter already!

dropping this on the same day as tom is a galaxy brain move
In general, contacting Tom and making this into sort-of a competition with him will net them quite a few new subscribers for sure. Clever guys these whippersnappers.
that more like.... normal brain. its standard for youtube collabs.
Love the absolute banter in reference to GeoWizard's previous straight line failures. It's refreshing to see so much humor between a couple of lads going on a simple straight stroll across an entire country.
They were also mocking Marcus Chess Teachers fear of sheep.
Bruh right. They referenced the campfire at the farmland mishap. That was absolutely brutal
Without Tom's mistakes they wouldn't be here.
@@thekentishpilgrimYes they would be.
@@voetbal12 Nah, Tom is the pioneer and they are simply piggybacking his creation. The ribbing is fine, as long as they remember to stay respectful to the master.
One thing on the hedges.. Even if your not getting permission to go through land(which your obviously not doing), try part them rather than trample and break them like you do at the start.
They are that thick to stop the sheep getting out, which they are bloody escape artists.
If your going to continue this and publish.. please be as repectful of the property your on as possible.
Farmes have enough crap to deal with without chasing sheep and fixing fences / hedges from you guys or people who copy you.
Plus farmers have alot of places to bury you and not many witnesses.
Bootlicker
@@MattyBrad riiight. they have a GPS, entire support crew tracking and following them, and are going in a straight line; isn't exactly gonna take Sherlock to work out what happened😂
The thing about escaping sheep cannot be overstated. They are an annoyance for the farmer, but an actual danger to any traffic on the road.
@@Sam-go3mb probably not going to take long to work out what happened after. But the farmer dosnt know that and its probably too late to say "gotcha" once the deeds already done.
Enjoyed watching, but two future Tories cracking jokes about GW then proceeding to get all the help in the world every couple of miles whilst doing it in joggers and no backpack points to this being an entirely different challenge to what Tom does. Its the underdog element that makes him so likeable...
I feel like this further cements how crazy Tom’s missions are since he usually does them solo or as a duo. These guys have a whole support team. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Anyways, excited to see how this plays out
They do it faster though. I think you have to bear in mind Tom is slower and then has first aid help from Verity. In this mission the guys run at one point, basically throwing themselves through gorse and hedges.
These guys have the most casual looking yet convoluted way of doing these missions and it's hilarious. They make it look easier than it is yet the planning that obviously went behind it is likely insane.
It looks easy because they probably cheated on a massive scale. It's too good to be true.
@@steffwo Unlikely, it's far easier to do the actual straight line mission than it is to cheat it.
@@regthethird6824 No, it's much easier to do some mouse clicks and film some partial walking scenes, than to do the whole trip truthfully.
@@steffwo the GPS recording is evidence enough for me, the hectares of land around them in some sections as well
@@steffwo Well done, you've caught us red handed. It's actually all green screened.
I like how you guys poke fun at Tom for the campfire and then proceed with no attempt at camo and even high vis gloves.
I never understood Tom's decision to go with camo, it's not making you invisible but way more sus if spotted...
@@FloSkSturmGraz not sus at all people from a distance probably just assume he’s a solider on a hiking trek and don’t bother him.
@@FloSkSturmGraz way less sus than these guys going through farming yards in hoodies!
@All there's definitely a cultural difference between the UK and central Europe, although we don't have a right to roam like in Scandinavia, trespassing is widely tolerated. I used to spend summers in the Alps as a kid and people jumping our fence and walking 10-20 m past the house happened all the time. There are only two things that would make me suspicious, going unnecessarily close to the house itself and a dude in full on military gear. Also the "maybe he's a solider on a exercise" argument doesn't make sense to me since we have designated maneuver grounds for that.
They were going to wear camo gear but had trouble finding it
As an old git I do think the straight line challenges are good fun but just to be a bit more responsible you should take more care going over and through fences and hedges rather than trampling them. They have probably been in place for decades if not centuries and are there to keep livestock in place and are not just important for the animals and the farmers but an escaped sheep in the road is an obvious traffic hazard. Compared to Tom you seem to be employing the "siege" approach to the challenge like the teams that summit Everest after support climbers set up ropes, ladders and campgrounds for them all along the trail ahead. Good luck with your future adventures boys.😅
love the camouflage gloves. we need more of these straight line missions…
Whilst Tom will always be the OG. It's great to see he's inspired people to go and adventure in the great outdoors that we tend to forget exists in the UK.
Good luck on your missions.
@@BitCrafted I don't like the idea of the ass-kissing you are doing either
@@BitCrafted Old mate was just giving recognition not worshipping. Weird take all up.
I really don't know what it is, but this style of mission with the support crew at every road, no backpacks, no tents, hauled across a river crossing, I dunno... It all seems cheap on adventure.
Have to admit that I prefer Tom's method of man vs line, with only occasional (once daily?) restocks and help.
Good on you guys, I'm enjoying it and will watch the continuations, but I just don't find this style as entertaining as Tom's from a watcher's perspective knowing there's a full team with help around every corner.
it has to be said however, that what tom is doing is also considerably more dangerous and has a higher chance of failing the mission for him. he carries more weight which slows him down, which in his previous runs regularily made him rush to reach preset goals, occasionally putting him in a lot of danger, which at times, if he would not have gotten out of, it would have taken hours for someone to find him. he is more likely to get exhausted and more likely to sustain serious injury on a fall (again due to the added weight) he is also less able to escape farmers, will be slower in thick brush, and has to plan around these eventualities constantly. ultimately, these two runs, are a race of sorts. and when you have a race across the atlantic (given there is no time goal, its just about actuallly getting there), flying in a biplane may be more adventorous and noble, but buying a first class ticket and sitting back for a few hours will be the plainly better way to go about it.
@@yowtfputthemaskbackon9202 yeah but that's exactly what makes Tom's missions exciting: there's all kinds of adventure and there's no guarantee that he will succeed. I have no doubt these guys will succeed given the help from the support crew. When you have so much help, it's kind of boring and also feels like cheating in my opinion. When you're a RUclips channel, there's more to it than just succeeding with the mission. I'm not sure these guys get that.
I love that you forgot to download the offline maps, and then continue to poke at Geo's attempts 😂
Took the piss out of Tom for not having enough batteries, then didn't wear gorse-proof clothing! 🙂
@@PeterMoore66 then when shouting out his channel they edited "40" subs in
Comparing this to GeoWizard's attempt, having a live support crew looks a godsend. They make you eat, make you chat, keen you sane and sharp - on top of there being two of you in the first place. Great setup and hats off to the crew 💛
Just saw the duck 😂🦆
I dunno. I felt a little bit uncomfortable with the duck crossing situations. I would almost venture to say that it was cheating for a lack of a better word. Maybe not cheating but maybe an unfair advantage. To me, it's the fact that they had assistance to pull them across. I hope not to start a debate or anything over this though. Clearly there aren't really many set rules for these missions. But I've never seen Tom/Geowizard get assistance to that magnitude, and so I just felt like stating my humble opinion. And to the contrary of my opinion, I guess one could just consider it better planning.
@@G.0. Having someone pull them in (at 17:49) rather than pulling themselves in (at 24:50) clearly wasn't a substantial 'advantage' - if anything they put more effort into posing for the shot for the first one. The massive advantage is having someone meet them at the river with an inflatable. But they're following the challenge laid down by Tom, and he did exactly the same in Wales 3 having Verity meet him with a kayak at the reservoir (and then paddle it around an outcropping). So -- fair game, really. They're learning from the master.
@@Alexand3ry Yea, I understand Tom gets assistance from Verity including the fact that she lugged a kaiyak to/ from him (I don't recall whether it was one or both), but he paddled across the reservior by himself from what I remember. Anyways, like I said, there doesn't seem to be any set rules. At least as far as something like this is concerned, so I'm not really upset by it. I just found it different, I guess.
@@Alexand3ry BTW, it was the one at 17:49 that caught me a bit off guard, where like you said, the helper is pulling them over. Anyways, I'll stop commenting. I'm not trying to discredit these guys. If they end up accomplishing the mission, they will deserve full credit imo.
Personally feel like a support crew was way overboard for this kind of a mission. In other countries multiday hikes with all your gear are the norm. Something about seeing McDonald's being eaten on this kind of mission really takes away from the 'wild'' nature of it. Good effort lads, but next time ditch the support crew and get your packs on!
Bad take. I think it ads to the fun. The UK is small and doesn’t have much real wilderness anyway I doubt you could ever be more than a few hours drive from a McDonald’s. These guys are authentic and real. By it’s very nature a straight line mission isn’t going to be “wild”
Most genuine down to earth straight line mission award goes to geowizard. The most posh and arrogant straight line award goes to you guys.
Watching from your sink estate council house makes you biased.
@@blackporscheroadster-yw8hb hahaha.
If you do another one and get stopped by an angry land owner use the " Sorry, we are on the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold award scheme, we hope it's OK? ", it worked for me, many years ago.
For full points when in someone's garden you should have to channel Bob Mortimer and chant "We do beg your pardon, but we are in your garden"
...and when they get caught they should just say they were playing 'Theft & Shrubbery"
It’s interesting to see just how differently you guys and Tom approach this mission
Too much assistance you literally got pulled across that river!!!
Yeh boys paying homage to the o.g veteran of the straight line challenge, notifying and allowing him to run before you is an honourable move. Respect

Last words of dead fox at 11:41: I'm not hunting sheep, I'm actualy doing a straithline mission across Wales....
The upside of me spending too much time on RUclips: The recommendation algorithm is well trained to my taste.
I'm looking forward to watch you mischievous lads.
Glad to see another straight line mission but there’s something not quite right about it. Maybe just not as enjoyable listening to a bunch of future prime ministers cracking jokes about Geowizard
I had no idea you had crossed Scotland until GeoWizard mentioned it in his Wales intro. You make a good pair of villain type characters. Fair play for letting him know first.
Tom actually has respect for farmers and their property you lot have no respect at all
Tom was doing the exact same thing, what are you talking about?
Definitely team GeoWizard (only because i've been following him for years) but hats off for doing this and fair play for getting in touch. May the best team win!
I love the "spirit of the game" approach Tom is going for, compared to the "Rules as written" approach you guys are going for, really refreshing to see a different approach to it.
3:42 the disrespect...
the cheeky buggers
Those conspicuous gloves are giving me irrational anger.
The thing that makes this challenge impressive and interesting is that is was a long hike with an added challenge. GeoWizard brought everything with him in a backpack, getting resupplied occasionally. Tent, food, water, water purifying kit, clothes etc. He was also wearing real hiking clothes that you would need for an actual hike. For those of you who have hiked before it is much harder to hike with full gear than to just walk. These guys are wearing clothes used for waking in a town, they don't even wear a backpack. Everything that they need will be handed to them along the way.
I don't think this should be part of the same category as Tom's line missions. That was a true hike
Bit of a different as Geo wizard only has his wife meet him with food apart from that he carries everything else in his pack
Where you guys have a support team helping you so you can go light
I have lots of respect for you guys and it’s great that others are attempting these missions too. But for me just your general tone comes across as way too cocksure. Geowizard’s self-deprecating tone, along with the lack of all the support team elements, means that he becomes your underdog hero as you go through the mission with him. I feel like - even if we know it was in jest - berating his failures comes across pretty poorly considering you’re being brought McDonalds and pork pies every mile or two.
That being said, best of luck to you and I’ll continue watching. Maybe just consider how you’re coming across in future 👍👍
I agree, Geowizard is the underdog.
this exactly
It’s an age thing. Tom is 30, while these guys could still be in their teens.
Their comments are definitely in jest and best taken in the spirit intended.
@@thehandleiwantedwasntavailable They're also very posh and just seem generally quite entitled - Tom's never that blokeish and rowdy
Why does the farmer in the next episode screaming at you guys sound like the exact same farmer that caught Geowizard in attempt 3? 😅
Line looks pretty similar to Wales #3
If you watch Geos recent upload he shows his previous attempts and then afterwards these guys line. It looks like they are pretty similar
Because when Welsh farmers are angry they all sound the same!
Farmer NPCs all sound the same
Yes, it's the same voice actor
Definitely gonna enjoy having 2 straight line missions to watch looking forward to seeing how you boys do
same here. love these videos from Tom haha
Good on you for letting Tom know! And it’s good of him to basically turn this into a collaboration with you two - the competing straight line missions will certainly bring your channel and his some new followers (like me!)
Good work!
Love watching these 2 missions at the same time. Two very different approaches to the same idea, one a pure solo trek staying largely self-reliant through the whole thing, and the other a massive group effort where the support group would not only give supplies, but also put in some effort for carrying the main adventure bodies and the GPS along the line. Either way a difficult challenge, but I certainly see Tom's attempts as more hardcore, but perhaps a more supported approach is essential to missions like this, as it was on Tom's mission to dribble a football across Britain
Thanks for bringing GeoWizard out of retirement lads. Anything to watch a 30 year old launch himself through hedges for another few hours.
hard challenge but this heavy support isnt fair, i wont call it a race vs geowizard
Very cool video, love to see more straight-line attempts! Although it looks like this run is valid so far, I would probably put it into a separate category from Tom's, considering how much support you're getting. Kind of like how some marathons have different categories for supported and unsupported runs. Keep up the good pace!
Toms run is also supported, a self supported or no stash route would be crazy.
It's a minimum 3 straight day challenge, there's no way you can do this with no support unless you can find places to hide food and supplies along the way beforehand
Tom - wears camo to not get noticed.
These guys - pink gloves seen from space
Very impressive even tho i think Tom owns the right to the "real" Straight line mission due his feels more realisitc due less support. Justt the nightly restock
Yes. The ethics of being pulld across rivers on the rubber duck and constant support team is questionable.
Great comms between daddy geo and you guys dropping the vids on the same day. Pleasure to watch both channels after coming back from camping. Two very different styles that are both brilliant to view.
Enjoyed this. It has a different vibe when it's posh boys doing it, rather than Tom, but it still works.
Your friend who set up the duck and walked across the raging rivers is the real MVP
Came here from Geowizards channel. Well on you guys giving Tom 1 more chance, he is the reason for all of this in the end. Super excited to watch you guys through this mission and many more to come. Love this content. Keep it up!
Love the banter by the way. Absolutely awesome.
Really cool to see such a different approach to the mission compared to Tom! I loved the encounters with the farmers
Eh I like the spirit of Tom’s mission better but I’m sure you’ve heard that before. What matters is you enjoyed it 🤷🏼♀️
I love watching both you and GeoWizards attempt, but to be honest: this is not really the same thing.
Sure this is a serious challenge as well, but the difference between carrying vs not carrying a huge backpack cannot be underestimated. Carrying tent, sleeping bag, provisions, extra clothing etc. makes all the difference in the world. On top of that, you get help by your support crew at so many points along the way.
Not saying this is not a legitimate straight line mission, just saying that what you and GeoWizards are attempting is pretty different things.
You guys are mental. “Oh the line goes through this house here, let’s just go for it” 😂
Not their buddy just walking through the barely knee deep river to get the pool floaty back
Its awesome to have other people doing this challenge but I think this should be in its own category with the amount of support y'all received. Still mad props to y'all for giving this a try!
That second farmer was so nice, he really took an interest in what you were doing and wasn’t mad the slightest
I don't get it these guys have so much support it's ridiculous, and if they do beat Tom that will be why
From one straight-liner to another, great job! An enjoyable watch - hope you make it to the end.

Ive just finished Toms video and got suggested this one, then what am i gonna do, lets watch this as well. 😊
good effort, but anything but a pure line, huge support crew carrying all the gear / food / prepping crossings, definitely advantage but takes away from the challenge element
big respect for advising GW prior to the attempt though!
How was it anythint but a pure line? Better than most of GW's attempts.
@@voetbal12 I explained it in the comment? they don't carry any of there gear, they have a tea of people prepping crossings bringing them food.
I'm really glad that more are getting behind the crazy idea of straight line missions. You seem to be tackling this challenge really well so far, although the line you chose is already looking quite risky. I'm really excited to see how this race turns out!
Less energy sapping though. Tom looked knackered on day one and already failed his pure platinum run so i prefer these guys plan
@@danielelliott5760 Tom is also alone, has very little support and has failed in the past so he wants to avoid similar scenarios. He also said himself he didn't eat enough. That can really bring your energy levels down.

The banter and commentary is pretty great. You guys can hold a candle to Geowizard's videos. Subbed to see the rest of your adventure and catch up on the last one you guys' did!
Having this much support takes a lot of the challenge and adventure out of it. I want to see someone do an unsupported straight line crossing of a country.
Completely disagree. Its called a straight line mission, not an unsupported straight line mission. Nevertheless, I personally think Tom’s videography, editing, map overlays, commentary etc. to all be quite a lot better than these guys, but they certainly have impressive athleticism!!
Good luck with yours!
26:04 Very cool of you to bring to our attention this small channel of only 40 subs - GeoWizard. ;)
Having your support crew pulling you across the River Severn is a cheat... If he'd tied the rope off, and you'd pulled yourselves across it would have been a different matter.
the river was very shallow and easily crossable, so the inflatables and us pulling them across were just a jokey thing.
Does that make this attempt void?
it's not that deep mate, just a bunch of lads havin a laugh leave them be
I think we should put this very serious matter to the Council on Straight Line Missions

Great fun guys. Neat to watch the two go head to head. We’re in for an entertaining series! 🥾 /
Man having that much support almost feels like cheating but still cool. Anyways that second guy was great. Thats the attitude people need to have when approaching people. However Tom in his Camo does look kinda sketchy so I get why people might come at him more hostile.
Very impressive. You are doing it with aplomb!
Nice contrast between self-deprecating Brummie and confident well-to-do Home Counties.
Please, just keep them coming. I love watching both yours and of course GeoWizards adventures
Too much assist with that line setup on the pond.
Not going full camo, that’s fair. But fluorescent pink gloves? That’s bold
having so much support feels a little bit like cheating,
I mean what is next ?
Having people up front placing ladders, or having somebody ring the farmers front door while you sneak by in the back?
They had the support crew place ladders on the Scotland mission. Someone threatened to call the cops and they said "We're just getting our ladder back."
I'm torn by these challanges. While I'm a big fan of creating unnecessary hardships to achieve a completely arbitrary goal, I also understand how the farmers feel, and if I were one would be taking pot shots and strangers worrying my sheep and damaging my fences and hedges. Seriously, learn how to go through a fence properly.
you’d shoot them? chill out pal
I really enjoyed the dynamic of having two cameras filming. Looking forward to day two!
I admire your quick decision making and bravery, but hope this doesnt become a thing lots of people attempt. And as someone who works building fences, walls and gateways on farms it is really annoying to see you leaving fences and hedges needlesly broken and taking no care to try and leave it stockproof
So much for all the oldies like me saying "kids today spend all their time on their phones instead of getting fresh air". Next mission straight line across Clarkson's Farm....😂

There's so much subtle references in here aiming at the one we will not name. Love it! Makes everything really interesting.
The casual BM to Marcus and Geowizard in the first 4 minutes totally sent me
You needed an inflatable duck to cross the Severn? Pathetic! GeoWizard walked across a wider river in Wales attempt 2!

Great work, Great to see more straight line crossers. Its not easy by any means but it seems you prepared enough to have a good crack at it.
Enjoyable attempt, and the fall-back idea of one person running it was a good contingency plan.
A couple of observations:
1. I think your interactions with the farmers were lacking in diplomacy somewhat, especially when compared to Tom's approach. Saying that, who can know if it would have made any difference? I think telling the truth is easiest solution, and is also the most likely to get a pass on their land.
2. I do personally feel that camping is a purer form of straight line. Carry all your food and drink, or make stashes, but generally be self sufficient. Having a van meet you with McDonalds does, to me, seem to cheapen the attempt somewhat. Of course if you have to have someone meet you, due to injury, being soaking wet in a storm etc, then that's a necessary intervention, but that still degrades the attempt in my opinion. I mean, where does it end?
Regardless of those mild criticisms/observations, it was still a good watch :)
I love your absolute full send approach, cracking video lads
Watching this in sync with Geowizards series
There’s no way you encountered the same angry farmer as geowizard? recognised the voice a mile away what are the odds lol
Enjoying this race with GeoWizard :D
Really love your videos, nicely edited and funny moments. One thing I think could be improved is you're a bit more destructive than geowizard is, bit more care to other peoples propertly and you've got a perfect video!
Keep up the good work!
That farmer on the red quad (the first one, not the angry one) was a cool guy. I wasn't expecting that.
