    I've always felt like SMB lost levels is way too overhated. Sure it's underwhelming as a sequel to SMB. And it's level design is pretty much like walking through a path of burning coal. I don't know why but. theres something fun about it. it's brutal but it's not unfair, it's a good challenge for people who mastered the original game. Basically what Shiggy thought in it's development.

      Honestly I agree, I vastly prefer it to Mario 1 tbh. It's fun and I get there's alot of BS but it's fun most times and alot of the stuff it does gets praise. I get that the main problem is that it pulls those cards from the start but simultaneously the game was made to be for players of the first game.

      @@MattTrashBoat If you die on the original version, the game will sent you back to the start of the world. And on World C-3, the 5th spring frequently despawns making the huge gap impassable. Making it one of the hardest levels of Super Mario franchise, don't know why the articles never mention that spring. World C-3 on the All-Stars is easier (the spring never despawn) than some of the levels of Lost Levels. But World C of the original version is a demon, mostly because C-3 is in the middle of the world (once you die you'll replay C-1 & C-2).

    19:46 Incidentally, before Lost Levels there was an arcade game called VS Super Mario Bros on the VS system. Many levels were reworked to be harder for the arcade experience. Many of Lost Levels's levels originated in Vs SMB.

    In retrospect, I view this more like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and while I think SMB2 US is a more interesting game with more new to offer, and like its strange additions to the cast, perhaps this should’ve still been allowed to release on the NES. Maybe not as SMB2 proper, but under the Lost Levels name still.

    The multiple enemies in 1-1 are clealry lined up for you to do a combo and get a 1-up. Using warp doesn't cancel access to the bonus worlds. The fundamental reason that Mario 2 didn't come to the West was that by 1988 NES cartridges were way more advanced so that SMB1's graphics were too basic to impress the market, compared to say Blaster Master, Contra, Life Force or Bionic Commando. 8-3 of For Super Players is unironically the best 2D Mario Level of all time.

    A bad game, no, but a bad sequel. If it were released today, it would probably be basically "Super Mario Bros.: Hard Mode DLC." It feels like additional content, a continuation of the original adventure, a challenge for those who think they've mastered the original. But a sequel should have its own identity and a fair amount of originality and novelty, which this game lacked, save for a few new elements and (in the original releases) some minor graphical improvements. It is otherwise very much the same, only much more difficult, and I do not think it is good for that to be the defining trait of a sequel. Its release in Western markets very possibly would have hurt the franchise, as it is very popular among young children, and the difficulty of SMB2/TLL would be unreasonable and off-putting for them, and would have left many less than enthusiastic for a "Super Mario Bros. 3." I'm glad it got released in different forms after a little while, but it's a good thing it wasn't the first sequel we got.

    • @legoboy7107
      @legoboy7107 2 года назад +9

      That's actually almost completely false. In the og version, to get the 4 secret worlds A through D, you have to beat 8-4 8 times, but you can use warps all 8 times so it's not actually that bad since the optimal warp route is mostly the easier levels of the game anyway. The only world for which you need to beat the game without warps is world 9, and you only need to do it once to do so. And I have no idea where the heck you got the "without dying once" part from, for both the things I just mentioned you can die and game over all you want while going for these and you'll still unlock the secret worlds.

      Any hack not officially done by Nintendo even if it is a good reason to patch a bug that Nintendo left on purpose, make it not official. And I'm not against moding, because I played on the computer the NES all-stars version and because for the lakitu in Super mario bros. and super mario bros. the lost level the game patch what Nintendo did or the glitch happen because in order to have the Nes all-stars it was a patch for super mario bros.3 rom that I already have and since Nintendo already fix the toss problem with lakitu in Super mario bros.3 it cause the lakitu to behave like Super mario bros.3 lakitu in the game like Super mario bros. and Super mario bros. the lost level causing them to be annoyingly more difficult that the official one.
