when I was a kid the dkc3 thing tricked me but I wasn't paying attention to the story at all and I did enjoy the comedy of it but looking back yeah, could of been implemented a lot better and I saw kaos as a 'normal' but weird boss (especially since he is pretty easy)
I think DKC3’s twist could have been helped with two changes to the lore/story: 1: K. Roolenstein as the first boss. Have him as a tutorial boss and one of the first NPCs encountered. After a brief skirmish, he offers a truce: after the events of DKC2, and the destruction of Crocodile Island, K. Rool was kicked out of the Kremlings. He mentions that, as the Kremlings needed a fearless, intelligent leader, they created KAOS, who has led them to taking over the Northern Kremisphere. He offers to help the Kongs in exchange for helping K. Rool destroy KAOS and reinstating him as ruler of the Kremlings. From that point on, K. Rool basically replaces Funky Kong in “inventing” better transport methods across the Kremisphere. Maybe he even provides helpful hints for finding bonus stages. Basically, have the player start to trust this former enemy. 2: KAOS is involved in every boss fight. Basically, KAOS is enhancing its troops personally. First major boss battle would have the Kongs arriving as KAOS finishes upgrades, then starts the fight, but KAOS itself is not involved. KAOS is seen flying away at the end of the fight. And each progressive boss fight has KAOS intervening at some point, usually to provide the boss an upgrade requiring the Kongs to change their strategy (and making for a nice indicator of the second phase). And the final boss fight in KAOS Keep, plays out where KAOS has analyzed every fight with the Kongs, and has made itself invincible. Every attack used against it works only once, and when all options are exhausted, and just when the Kongs can’t possibly harm KAOS, the machine shuts down as K. Roolenstein walks in, holding a remote. He thanks the Kongs for distracting the robot long enough for him to shut it down. He talks about how remarkable it was that, had he not intervened, the Kongs would have surely perished. He clicks a button, as a trap door opens, dropping both Kongs into a pit. K. Rooleinstein then declares his weapon is ready for world domination, all thanks to the Kongs training it. The Kongs fight through a frightful final stage back to the top of the Keep. K. Roolenstein reveals that he had played the Kongs this whole time; he had never been kicked out, and that the whole time he needed to study together Kongs. And now, he was truly invincible! The fight now proceeds with both K. Roolenstein and KAOS attacking. Both are immune to your attacks. But not each other’s. The final fight has you needing to trick KAOS into attacking K. Rool, and then careening him into the robot. And during the end credits, have Cranky proudly declare that the old lizard never fooled him. “Once a villain, always a villain.” Maybe causing someone to question if Cranky is a villain since he kidnapped maidens. With the old Kong claiming “that’s different!”
I’ve played these games for decades and it’s hitting me that DCK3 is the only time that K Rool has actual dialogue and it’s kinda weirding me out now. Homie didn’t need to talk in the first two, he was just there to fuck shit up.
DKC3's final world also doesn't feel appropriately dangerous, it looks as relaxing as the other worlds, with only the lab signifying any sense of danger on the world map. Couple that with K Rool's Saturday morning cartoon villain speech, it feels a lot more laid back as a finale than the prior games.

Yeah the fact that there was dialogue in two of the boss fights was strange.
