One of the best British bands ever.
Agreed :]
One of the best in human history. Madness is so much fun and intelligent
If anyone wanted to know what it was like being a kid in the UK, in the late 70's/early 80's all they would need was this song. "Kicking pushbikes after dark, pulling hair and eating dirt." It's poetry, and it takes me right back to those days.
I think it's knicking (stealing) pushbikes after dark but they dropped the first 'n' in the lyrics. Kicking bikes makes no sense.
@@baylessnow Knicking pushbikes makes a lot more sense. Raleigh Choppers were prime targets !
It wasn't much different where I grew up. Suburbian Amsterdam. In those days the kids related very much to Madness.
All the kids would be wearing baggy trousers to school because the parents would buy them 2 sizes too big, because you would grow into them. So at the start of the school term everyone would have baggy trousers.
Also hand me downs.
And six months in patches on the knees :)
the sheer embarassment of other kids pointing out your baggy trousers..
I think this is a really heartwarming song about childhood friendships and looking back to things that you moaned about at the time but led to happy memories. Madness had loads of great songs.
There was the famous Pink Floyd song, Another Brick in the Wall, about school. But to Suggs that didn't speak to him, his school experience wasn't about control. It was about the rough and tumble of a state school, so he wrote this. It is a piece of nostalgia about going to school in the 70s in England.
This Video demonstrates an early 80,s era childhood in the UK and school life!! 😊
One of my favourite bands. "Night boat to Cairo" is the ring tone on my phone, but they had so many more great songs, like "One step beyond", "House of fun", "My girl", "It must be love" (with Labi Siffre doing a great cameo in the video, his original version is beautiful as well).
I am trying to isolate the opening note from Night Boat to Cairo as my text alert. More practice needed on the editing software.
A great band, who covered a wide rage of styles and topics, you could try:
1) The Prince - a great Ska song about trying to play ska music when you are 7 white boys in London.
2) It must be love - a love song
3) My Girl - Relationship problems! (these are all great songs, don't let the subjects put you off)
4) Shut up - A thieves song about not taking responsibility for your actions
5) Embarrassment - Social isolation after disappointing people
6) Cardiac Arrest - a funny song about why you shouldn't work yourself to death.
7) House of fun - a 16 year old trying to buy condoms but to cool to call them by name (very funny)
8) Driving in My car - a song about driving.
9) Wings of a Dove - another love song (gospel style)
10) Night boat to Cairo - another Ska song about a journey along the Nile.
11) or you could try some instrumentals - One Step Beyond or The Return of the Los Palmas 7
This type of music is called ska. Which means it's basically Reggae music but played at a faster tempo. If you keep that in mind you might get it if you happen watch it again.
Our House,My Girl , It Must be Love and House of Fun some others from this band from Camden Town !! 😊👌😎
Indeed.
One of their great unsung tunes for me is "Embarrasment".
sadly, shortly after this performance the saxophone player was caught in a gust of wind and never seen again.
Madness were all about fun, but a few of their songs had some strong meaning behind them. Madness "It must be love" is quite beautiful. Also, "You're an embarrassment" has a racial element after one of the bands sisters was in a bi-racial relationship and incurred the wrath of family.
I love Madness. They're honestly so chaotic and brilliant. Even now they're so awesome live, perfect example of the ska music scene.
Grinning! Forgot what a mood-lifter Madness is. :)
40 years on, and i still remember every word to this song. Madness were great story tellers.
Your expression of bemusement was priceless 😮 😂
This song pretty much sums up what school life was like back in the day... before the Internet came along. Great days, great reaction.
You're a real breath of fresh air 😊
Your reactions are always one step beyond!
THAT WAS NORMAL FOR US BACK IN THE 80'S
You say pants. I say trousers. Let's call the whole thing off!
2 Tone Ska. Love their number Land of Hope and Glory
This song was the perfect accompaniment to BBC's school based drama Grange Hill. This song and Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd describes perfectly the state of British Education in the late seventies/early eighties.
Madness demonstrates brilliantly that you can be COOL - even by being deliberately UNCOOL. Some Madness really is close to Genius.
This was very much my experience at school in the 70s. I got hand-me-down trousers from my older brothers that were literally "Baggy Trousers" as they were bell-bottom flares. Corporal punishment was also very much a thing at my school and you could get hit by a teacher, just because he felt like it.
Welcome to schools of the late 70s uk , and didn’t change much through the 80s.
Teacher breaks up the trouble but another naughty child throws a plastic cup at the back of the teachers head.
Really this song should be classed as a folk song like a few other Madness tracks.
Don't worry - you definitely have to be British to understand the references (which are pretty accurate for most kids in the 70's and 80's) - especially at the speed that Suggs is singing.
More Madness please!!!!!! In today's mad world they make more sense than ever!!!!!!
The song "Shut up" is my favourite song by Madness 😁
Trousers in the UK are what you call pants in the US. Corporal Punishment would have been allowed in school when he was there-teachers would cane children's asses or hands, throw things at the back of their heads etc. Although it wasn't until the mid 1980's that it was finally banned in schools, it was highly frowned upon by the late 1970's or so, I started primary school in 1981 & it never happened there, although one teacher who was a bit odd would lightly use a blackboard eraser as a joke if people were messing around too much.
These guys are litterally my childhood my dad used to show me their songs and we both laughed at the music videos together :))
The sound of my youth, only the UK makes music like this, Madness is our band
Baggy Trousers: What an excellent way to open their album Absolutely.
That album is absolutely great from start to finish.
Yes you are right it's about their school days memories..Baggy trousers were part of the school uniform ..and most students trousers (pants ) were 2 sizes too big ,so the kids didn't grow out of them too quickly
madness are a great band meaning they didnt learn much at school teachers going through the motions not caring about pupils sounds like my school in the 70s but we had fun this band are a part of british working class culture live they drive the crowd mad
Brings me back to my school days pure class 😎👍
Your eyes at :59 when the song kicked was priceless. Then you looked at us at 1:42 w/ like a Whaaat?. Priceless. That's the correct reaction. Just take the ride. 'House of Fun' is a great one. or One Step Beyond.
The music genre is basically SKA other types mixed in. BTW SKA "originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. Ska is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off beat.
What it is the singer Suggs is reminicing about school days in the UK, all the things that went on at Schools in the UK fighting the class next door, being in the headmaster's office nearly everyday that kind of thing
‘Our House’ is another great Madness classic :)
My youth was listening to madness, my adult life seeing them live as often as possible
Great music and sounds they were a record company called two tone records and band like bad manners and special
React to Madness' "One Step Beyond"!!
Great shout
Good number even though it's instrumental
She did. She's still recovering.
“Sits alone and bends his cane, same old backsides again”.. they’re telling us the headmaster (principal) is basically sick and tired of seeing the same kids sent to him on a near-daily basis to be punished… to be stung across the kid’s bottom with the cane he’s holding. Years ago, if kids got into trouble at school, they would get smacked across their bottom or their knuckles as punishment. Sometimes with a cane, sometimes with a wooden ruler. Ouch!
You were warned they are called Madness :-)
For me, as it comes to Madness, "The Night Boat to Cairo" is an eternal flame.
"Gone to fight with next door school, every term (not team) that is the rule". Back in my day, junior school (7 to 11 years old) the catholic schools always got out at 3:30 and the C of E/Protestant school next door got out at 3:45 so there was almost always somebody waiting outside to start a fight.
Almost every child of that age had baggy trousers. Parents would buy them a couple of sizes too big and say "he'll grow into them". Baggy refers to something (usually clothing) that is too big for the wearer.
It's got to be "House of fun" next.
Honesty - i like it
This song is so redolent of its time and place I’m not surprised you can’t make head nor tale of it.
Oh man I love this band. I started school in 1985 Seriously underrated band. It Must Be Love and Shut Up are more profound
Fun Madness fact... My Girl was originally written for Cyndi Lauper by them as My Guy but she didn't want it so they kept it
Baggy trousers refers to the fact that they were wearing their older siblings hand me downs.
since i was a kid ( i'm 50yo now ) madness makes me whant to jump everywhere. all songs are so entertaining. i love night boat on cairo, our house, my girl, house of fun ...
Mums would buy your school uniform a size or two larger because kids grow so fast, hence baggy trousers.
Takes me back these were great times 👌
Hey
Based on the original ska album from 1960
Check out madness we call it gladness...
Such fun - remember this fondly from my childhood - their music was full of such joy ^-^
Soooo 80s British music!
Yes for a first timer to their fun songs can be confusing but basically Baggy Trousers were kids pants bought to last years as they grow so very baggy. Fun band try "IT MUST BE LOVE" as it is more what your used too. Keep Safe Keep Strong KSO
I think his school trousers are baggy cos his mum bought them at the start of the year too big, so he had room to "grow into them"
You had to be there. I think I was12 years old. Oh, what fun we had.
Madness ‘ answer to another brick in the wall by Pink Floyd
NIGHT BOAT TO CAIRO
Hi KSO, always a fun group to watch & listen too !! I can`t think of a bad song of theirs. Another good one, I have not seen a reactor do yet is (Driving in my Car).
My Gal.... the words and references are fast so it might need you to find a vid with the words ... its about growing up and all the things we did as kind... and , of course , it is typically british references ...i.e. "passing round the ready rub" said in the pub by the teachers... thats pipe tobacco that they share ... nothing illegal .... you need MORE MADDNESS ... fantastic group... listen to any of their songs... they are typically brit references ( London ) , but are so uplifting
Yep growing up in the 70s going to school I got cained nearly every week. Size 12 pumps if you forgot your pt kit.
Fantastic band! This was one of their wackier singles.
You might also enjoy The (English) Beat with songs like "I confess", "Save it for later" or "Doors of your Heart".
Sticking with Madness, please react to House of Fun.
Ready Rub is referring to smoking tobaco .. rolling your own cigarettes.
Aaaw maybe you had to go to a working class English school in the 1970’s... anarchy and poverty
another fantastic uk band, so many hits, one of my favourites was Nightboat To Cairo.....lots of crazy videos to go with the wacky but great sounding tunes.
If you have not already, try 'It must be love' by Madness, thats one good song you'll will like.
I would love to see you react to One Better Day by Madness so different from anything else they did. 👍🇬🇧🏴🤠
I have loved Madness since I first went to live gigs .... they just sum up working class life in a fun way! :) Check out "One Step Beyond" "Our House" or " Shut Up" ... the videos are brilliant :) .....
MADNESS is all in the Mind.
Madness were amazing, I guess this could be a bit intense though if 'Ska' is not your thing. I strongly recommend 'It Must Be Love', I am 100% sure you would love that.
I hated school was one of the bad kids but like a huge percentage now think it was the best days of our lifes I also regret been so bad at school due to been pure I with I went to college and university.
For other Madness tunes, try The Sun And The Rain, Lovestruck or Grey Day.
Baggy Trousers - referring to the terrible state school uniforms
I thought it was 70s i went to infants and lil school in until about 92. This most be 70s or very early 80s.
Hello. Just wanna to say thank you. I've a suggest for you to react. Going home (A night in London version) from Mark Knopfler. Send you hugs 🤗
I hope someone sends you 'House of Fun' by Madness - I'd love to see your reaction to that one!
What do you think of that then!? Complete Madness 😃
The Nutty Boys (what they are known as)
Brilliant band and still going , it's kinda SKA, but after the Specials did it better, they became more Nutty music , unique to madness
Back catalogue would need another channel lol
first recored i ever got 1980
you had to be a teenager in the late 1970s in the U.K............................i was!.. it was an utopia
Seventy FIF!
Well their name was Madness
Please react to One Step Beyond.
Please try: "Intoxication" by: shriekback. I think you gonna like this song.
Gray day or cardic arrest
lol
try house of fun
Just about school life in 70s before mass immigration.
What the Heck? What I’m I hearing ?KSO talk me off the ledge🤕
From the same period, a very worthwhile band were DEXY'S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS.
English culture
This seems heavily influenced by Cardiacs to me. That's a band you should investigate.
Not sure Americans really get Madness.
This American does.
