    If anyone wanted to know what it was like being a kid in the UK, in the late 70's/early 80's all they would need was this song. "Kicking pushbikes after dark, pulling hair and eating dirt." It's poetry, and it takes me right back to those days.

    • @baylessnow
      @baylessnow 3 года назад +2

      I think it's knicking (stealing) pushbikes after dark but they dropped the first 'n' in the lyrics. Kicking bikes makes no sense.

      It wasn't much different where I grew up. Suburbian Amsterdam. In those days the kids related very much to Madness.

  • @KernowWarrior
    @KernowWarrior 3 года назад +53

    All the kids would be wearing baggy trousers to school because the parents would buy them 2 sizes too big, because you would grow into them. So at the start of the school term everyone would have baggy trousers.

    There was the famous Pink Floyd song, Another Brick in the Wall, about school. But to Suggs that didn't speak to him, his school experience wasn't about control. It was about the rough and tumble of a state school, so he wrote this. It is a piece of nostalgia about going to school in the 70s in England.

    One of my favourite bands. "Night boat to Cairo" is the ring tone on my phone, but they had so many more great songs, like "One step beyond", "House of fun", "My girl", "It must be love" (with Labi Siffre doing a great cameo in the video, his original version is beautiful as well).

    A great band, who covered a wide rage of styles and topics, you could try:
    1) The Prince - a great Ska song about trying to play ska music when you are 7 white boys in London.
    2) It must be love - a love song
    3) My Girl - Relationship problems! (these are all great songs, don't let the subjects put you off)
    4) Shut up - A thieves song about not taking responsibility for your actions
    5) Embarrassment - Social isolation after disappointing people
    6) Cardiac Arrest - a funny song about why you shouldn't work yourself to death.
    7) House of fun - a 16 year old trying to buy condoms but to cool to call them by name (very funny)
    8) Driving in My car - a song about driving.
    9) Wings of a Dove - another love song (gospel style)
    10) Night boat to Cairo - another Ska song about a journey along the Nile.
    11) or you could try some instrumentals - One Step Beyond or The Return of the Los Palmas 7

    This type of music is called ska. Which means it's basically Reggae music but played at a faster tempo. If you keep that in mind you might get it if you happen watch it again.

    Madness were all about fun, but a few of their songs had some strong meaning behind them. Madness "It must be love" is quite beautiful. Also, "You're an embarrassment" has a racial element after one of the bands sisters was in a bi-racial relationship and incurred the wrath of family.

    This was very much my experience at school in the 70s. I got hand-me-down trousers from my older brothers that were literally "Baggy Trousers" as they were bell-bottom flares. Corporal punishment was also very much a thing at my school and you could get hit by a teacher, just because he felt like it.

    Welcome to schools of the late 70s uk , and didn’t change much through the 80s.
    Teacher breaks up the trouble but another naughty child throws a plastic cup at the back of the teachers head.
    Really this song should be classed as a folk song like a few other Madness tracks.

    Trousers in the UK are what you call pants in the US. Corporal Punishment would have been allowed in school when he was there-teachers would cane children's asses or hands, throw things at the back of their heads etc. Although it wasn't until the mid 1980's that it was finally banned in schools, it was highly frowned upon by the late 1970's or so, I started primary school in 1981 & it never happened there, although one teacher who was a bit odd would lightly use a blackboard eraser as a joke if people were messing around too much.

    The music genre is basically SKA other types mixed in. BTW SKA "originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. Ska is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off beat.

    “Sits alone and bends his cane, same old backsides again”.. they’re telling us the headmaster (principal) is basically sick and tired of seeing the same kids sent to him on a near-daily basis to be punished… to be stung across the kid’s bottom with the cane he’s holding. Years ago, if kids got into trouble at school, they would get smacked across their bottom or their knuckles as punishment. Sometimes with a cane, sometimes with a wooden ruler. Ouch!

    "Gone to fight with next door school, every term (not team) that is the rule". Back in my day, junior school (7 to 11 years old) the catholic schools always got out at 3:30 and the C of E/Protestant school next door got out at 3:45 so there was almost always somebody waiting outside to start a fight.
