"Baggy trousers", because your mum would buy school trousers several times too big so you would 'grow in to them'. We were that poor.
Or hand me downs from your older brother 😅🤣😅
'Baggy trousers' is because when we were young, money was tight, and our mums would buy us clothes that were too large for us because we would "grow into them." This is why you would see kids of our generation running around with our clothes flapping in the breeze like flags.
Madness are such consummate storytellers, and they do it so well that you often don't realise that's what they are doing.
Also handmedowns that didn’t quite fit yet, but hey, you had to wear something.
@@0okamino Those 70s clothes in the 80s!
@@benlee8436 Madness members were at school in the 70's, it's about their time in School.
@@Pinza7 Yeah yeah, I know! But I was seeing it when I was at school in the 80s!
Madness were superb because they managed to make great music and act really stupid at the same time without it being cringy, even after the passage of so much time.
The flying thing was basically made up on the spot when they discovered there was a crane next to where they were filming, with a crane operator willing to spend half an hour helping them out with a pop video. Certainly became one of the big iconic visuals for the group... on occasion Lee Thompson has even recreated it on stage with wires.
They were indeed part of the two tone family thus the connection with The Specials (especially Jerry Dammers).
The title is part of the reminiscing, as it was a time of poverty and mischief. Baggy trousers were common due to hand me downs.
“Baggy trousers, dirty shirt, pulling hair and eating dirt…”
"Madness" were always great fun !! The Ska and two tone thing was brill to be in , Stomping kept you fit !
Ace !!
In a close up of the guys in the hall, look out for Chas Smash saying "Hello Mum" !
Best times of our lives is being at school. None of us know it until we are no longer at school!
What i like about the Haniers is how they manage to get across their joy at seeing Madness, while, at the same time, they look relaxed enough to fall asleep. There has to be some skill to that. 😉
We're just chill, man.
Your totally on to it i also like their chilled layed back style and lack of shouting WHAT'S UP WERE BACK. DOWN TO EARTH NICE PEOPLE
@@heathcornbeef Yeah, that's it exactly. 😎
ill fitting trousers was the norm for a working class kid in the 70's early 80's , i got my mum to Tapper mine and turn them up at the bottom , we had shops back then that sold generic school uniforms which were cheap for the average family , the trousers and blazer had a high amount of wool in the mixture , sometime in the early 80's nylon was added which had a slight shine to the cloth , we called them stay press , they looked sharp and stylish and with a Fred Perry polo shirt the look was the ultimate in cool ,,,,
madness are a great band, baggy trouser si what we wore to school
It's amazing how you're reliving my (UK) youth. Or at least i am vicariously at 53. This summed up the British school system in the 70s PERFECTLY with a sense of humor, a great melody and bass line and everybody from the UK who's a certain age will remember this. It's that whole nostalgia thing.
The baggy trousers we wore in the late 70's at school were straight but as wide as flares. They had multiple pockets including big square patch pockets on the side. They were a sort of thin canvas material & the legs, being so wide, rubbed together when you walked. The look was inspired by the Northern soul scene. The cheap version of these trousers were known as 10 button baggies & everybody knew you were not wearing a 'proper' pair.
Written in response to Pink Floyd’s “another brick in the wall” apparently.
Song suggestion (I always have to leave one!):
“The importance of being idle” by Oasis.
All the best!
In the late 60s/early 70s, when Madness themselves would have been schoolkids, baggy trousers were still a fashion accessory! 😄
😅the band that played Finsbury Park, and the ground shook.
People in poor housing estates bought secondhand clothing that you would grow into and so everyone wore baggy trousers etc
Why, of course! Good forward thinking.
Not necessarily secondhand but slightly oversized so that you'd grow into them and save money by buying less pairs overtime.
older brothers trousers, hand me downs lol
It's about kids growing up,hand downs from your older brother's or your mother always bought bigger sizes because we was always growing white, black, pink or blue .our parents were working class you have to make do accordingly to situations ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Loved fighting the next door school at end of term...👍🤣
Madness are brilliant live, can't wait to see them in December
many kids in England wore baggy trousers, and I assume those kids of the 70's grew to be the indie kids in the late 80's - pioneering the Baggy dance music subculture.
I was a big Madness fan in 1979/80 & no one wore baggy trousers where I was from in London!
@@normandavidtidiman9918 I stand corrected. Kids wore baggy trousers when Madness were little nutty boys in the 60's. Come the late 70's and nobody wore baggy trousers. Then sometime in the mid to late 80's, Northerners discovered baggy trousers and began the Baggy dance scene. Now I know better. Thank you.
@OnceWasRStrathfield When we all little nutty boys in the 60s I think we wore shorts, never remember any "baggy trousers". Your latter slightly sarcastic point is valid where northerners are concerned however.
@@normandavidtidiman9918 Well, all I can go by is Madness talking about the good old days of baggy trousers. I didn't know that it wasn't a style in London in the 60's and 70's. I assumed it was so hip that it had it's own dance craze in the late 80's. I have a dry sense of humour. Sorry if that wasn't detected.
The guy is so fricking bored but the young lady is loving it.LMAO
I am not bored. This is one of my favourite Madness songs. From that day. Thank you.
she gets it straight away
ah...Ska with a peculiarly British twist.... brilliant! ❤
Great song when I saw the video aged 9 on Top of The Pops (iconic British Music show) it was a seminal moment in my life and the next day I discovered all my School mates felt the same. I am still a massive fan of Madness to this day.
Written as a reaction to Pink Floyd's, Another Brick In The Wall apparently.
The thing i love most about the Madness videos, is that collectively, they look as if they were done for about 400 bucks
Astute comment Sandy. While Duran Duran were filming videos on yachts in the Caribbean, Madness went to a local school and filmed the local kids being kids. And we all know which was best.
Subbed, love Madness and great to see people reacting to them.
Suggs is a national treasure.
I always thought that the title was a reference to parents buying trousers a number of sizes too big: "stop yer whining, they have to last, you'll grow into 'em" in my case I recall!
Bit of fun SKA
So many great/fun Madness songs. Always enjoyed them. I think I saw you mention in one of your other videos of a Midnight Oil song that you didn't know their early stuff. If you want a great live one from back then check out Stand In Line - there's a few great live versions on you tube, the Oils on the Water version is one of them.
This is basically my school days around that age (mid to late 70’s). Funny but very relatable video (bar the flying of course).
I only knew one other person who loved Madness the way I did back in the day. I will never understand why they weren't bigger in the states: have always come to the conclusion that they were just too British. I only know that a hell of a lot of people missed out on a lot of fun from a great band.
The whole Reggae thing didn't touch America like it did the Commonwealth. It was bigger here, in Canada.
If you get the chance check out these other tracks by madness

"Baggy Trousers" was a reference to the huge flared trousers that were worn in the 70s
I love Madness, they were ONE STEP BEYOOOOOOND
Then the saxophone hits...
U two guy's are brilliant together love watching your reaction video's love to you both from 🇬🇧 👍
baggy trousers during the 70s means flairs.
"All the Teachers in the pub, passing round the ready rub" The days of loose tobacco in small tins and smoking 'roll up' cigarettes with Rizla paper in pubs.
Oh how my 12 yr old self loved this song (and still do!), Great band, Great song,Great reaction Cheers Jim, UK

Song from my youth! Hi from the Netherlands 😃
Oh the memories 👍
This song was written by suggs, it was an opersit of pink Floyd's teacher leave them kids alone. Suggs, real name greylag mcpherson started at a very rough school , gone to fight with next doors shool was a real thing. There is a story behind every madness song, believe me there is no song you can review, when I can't tell you the story.
Greylag? 🤣
opersit?
I saw them live in the Queens Hall in Leeds in 1980,I was 15 and sneaked out the house because I was grounded, I got away with it "Happy days".
You will love "in the middle of the night" by madness!
Or the 'sequel' Close Escape :) awesome songs
They are a fine of british working class heroes...very british😎

Baggy trousers I think is a description of the school uniform for boys. Trousers always baggy.
couldnt afford new, so wore bigger brothers clothes etc
Anthem of my youth
At least the sax had baggy trousers.
its to do with the clothes we we wearring as kids in the day late 70s early 80s tank tops & big trousers ( baggy )
you wore your brothers big trousers
Have you heard of a current Ska band called The Skints? Check out their song rubadub, you will love it.
We will add it to our list
@@hanierfamily Cool cheers, you will love them.
This is Madness! Ridiculous! (And I would want some more of it, too, if this was my first acquaintance.)
But apart from that, all I have to say is that *Guided by Voices* have (yet another!) new album out. The song that speaks to me more than any other on it is *Released Into Dementia* ruclips.net/video/BAlK6THCMow/видео.html
(If you don't know them, they're an indie cult band of long standing with a huge catalog of songs - a small few of which are not so great, plenty that are really, really good, an unusually large percentage that are fantastic, and quite a few that are even better than fantastic. This one is new, so for now maybe it's among the really, really good ones until its taken up residence in the brain cavity.)
We’re alphabetically at ‘Ma…’ - for a suggestion what about the excellent live act from Sydney in the 80s-90s, Matt Finish?
Here’s a live in studio version of Always Another:

1980s Britain ! A Simpler time ! .
Filmed at a school in London, saw them live in 2010, even better than this xD
Reaction to Manu Chao - Clandestino
On a slightly different Tone ! No pun intended the great Jeff Beck is no longer with us ,Not expecting his back catalog to be played ,but maybe an appreciation of great guitar players from these British Islands, and Ireland that maybe get overlooked ! Jeff Beck being one them ! Here are a few to ponder ,or the bands they were in !
Rory Gallagher ! Robin Trower ! Gary Moore as in Thin Lizzy or his solo work ! Bill Nelson { you have covered with a Be Bop Deluxe track ,there is so much more } the great "Wishbone Ash " Two lead guitars of Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefeild ! The very under rated "Budgie" just to mention these will take a bit of time to cover , i have on idea if you have already , no matter , Cheers ,from a wet and windy Cornwall ,
That's a good idea. 🙂
@@colinglen4505 Thanks 4 that !
We just did Beck's Bolero live from 2016. Great performance.
One of my brothers favourite songs. He still has no taste 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not my thing at all. However, the thing I really appreciate about, Madness is that they spent very little on videos when bands like Duran Duran spent huge amounts. Also, this music still seems relevant over 40 years on.
Sounding like a secret crush...
"Not my thing at all". I wonder if you're a Camel, or Gentle Giant, or... i'm sure you get my progressive drift!
Duran Duran’s videos came out in 1982, this was a couple of years before then when videos were still pretty budget-lite
@Christian Adams Just not a fan of Madness. I do appreciate their work but just don't listen to it
@@colrhodes377 Fair play to you. I was just hoping you weren't a prog rock snob! 😊
Can I Play With Madness 🤪
Yes, you can!
Was that a thinly veiled Iron Maiden request? 😊
Madness, though brilliant aren't really ska , specials more so
You should get a job as a voice over guy😁
Anything would be better than what I do now. And thanks for saying that.
Don't try to analyse songs!
