    This definitely describes my school days. The teachers did go to the pub at lunchtime, they did smoke ready rubbed, there was an annual fight with the other school across town, but the teachers would chuck chalk at us rather than plastic cups. Great days lol

    I worked as a probation officer in Highgate, north London 1979 to 1981. One of Madness’s crew was up in court for some minor offence and the whole band turned up to offer moral support. Great to see them.

    This was written as a reaction against Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall".
    With the thinking being although Pink Floyd at their posh fee paying school may have suffered from strict repressive teachers stifling their individuality, everyone in Madness attended "bog standard" comprehensives full of well meaning liberal teachers who were constantly getting stick from all the rowdy pupils.
    I vaguelly recall an interview with Suggs where he said something along the lines of _" 'Hey teacher, leave them kids alone' ??? that wasn't my experience at all. When I was at school it was completely the opposite and more a case of -hey kids, leave the poor teacher alone"_

    • @PNEKarl
      @PNEKarl 3 года назад +2

      Thanks. Now I'm off for a Pink Floyd classic :-)

    • @welshtoro3256
      @welshtoro3256 2 года назад

      Interesting point, although completely incomprehensible at the time. They both have a point but Pink Floyd are far more middle class than the kids this vid. Going to school in a 'bog standard comp' in a city was just like Madness present it. (The school in this video looks just like mine.) Even the teachers were a different kind due to the expectation levels.

    Thanks so much for championing the nutty boys - they are a national treasure, didnt matter what genre you were into back in the day, when they came on the proverbial juke box, the smiles resonated across everyone's face...as for the dance (wasn't it called the Monkey Stomp? anyone?), I don't care what anyone says, it was designed for us two left feet brigade , and we all willingly gave it a go , and their gigs were the best knees up in town...not musical genius's, but they could play their beat combo way into your hearts...love them to bits...'Bed & Breakfast Man' my personal favourite, but you know what, play anything by them, you can't go wrong...and subscribed!

    It's always fun seeing them now. Six of them look old, as you'd expect, but the singer, Suggs, looks almost exactly the same. House of Fun is another good one by them - essentially it's about the temptations of becoming an adult, but the verses are about a boy on his 16th birthday going to the chemist to buy a condom, but being to embarrassed to ask outright, and failing due to using euphemisms instead. Another great one is "Night Boat To Cairo", filmed with an intentionally terrible studio/green screen set-up. At one point during the song, a dog runs only the set, and runs underneath the green screen curtain.

    I finally found the 2016/2017 *War of Words: Battle Rap in the UK* documentary yesterday.
    I haven't watched it properly yet, as I just skipped through it correcting the credits already on *IMDB,* and adding the 40+ missing cast members, around 10 missing crew members, and I've still got around 60 associate producer or thanks credits left to add.
    However halfway through correcting the credits, a segment about *Lunar C* started, and I heard...
    1 - The 3 time *Don't Flop* champion *Tony D* who's a member of *Poisonous Poets* with the rapper/comedian *Doc Brown* and the rapper/activist *Lowkey,* say *"This kid really knows what he's doing. You don't want to get pigeon-holed as a battle MC. It's like being in a soap opera for 10 years, once you leave that soap opera, you're not getting another job."*
    2 - *Eurgh* the co-founder of *Don't Flop* say *"This kid is fucking hilarious. Straight away I wanted to get him back in a battle. It snowballed because the word was spreading about this kid who was telling really funny, quite rude jokes. I remember so many people sharing his videos and writing it doesn't matter if you're in to battle rap, you'll like this guy. Lunar gave us that final push we needed. Lunar said from the start he never wanted to battle for very long. He didn't want to be the best battler in the world. He just rode the wave. He was getting tracks played on BBC Radio 1Xtra shortly after that, and he was doing collaborations with some quite big artists."*
    3 - *MA* a former head judge of *Don't Flop* say *"Lunar C and Matter vs Philly Swain and ZM was a crazy battle. It was set to be big from the start and it was. Lunar C and Matter are just normal pretty cool dudes who could live next door to you, and they come on with a much more comedic style, and that's great."*
    4 - *Ara the Coach* the co-founder of *Jump Off TV* say *"He's probably been the most effective battle MC in this country ever. And Professor Green did about a hundred battles to create a certain amount of value for himself to feel like I don't have to do anymore. I can now step out and go on to music which is what I want to do. Lunar in comparison did 5 battles."*
    He actually did 6 battles, plus a 7th comeback battle a few years later against the champion *Oshea,* all of which he won, which is why he got *Performance of the Year* and *Newcomer of the Year* awards.

    'Return of the Los Palmas 7' and 'It Must Be Love are two of my faves'. Whilst you're checking out our 80's tunes, don't miss Bad Manners.

    We all tried to dance like this, not sure many of us succeeded. For a slightly different sound from Madness try "Michael Caine"

    Everyone thinks they're just a 'novelty-act', but they did do some pretty good songs too.
    Check out 'Grey Day', or 'It must be love', or 'Tomorrow's just another day', or 'Night boat to Cairo'!

    Madness were one of the biggest bands of their era. Check out one of the biggest bands of the past 20 years - Take That. I suggest one of these songs - Pray, Shine, Never Forget or Back for Good

    They were just mad dance moves. No one else danced like Madness unless they were trying to copy Madness. Try 'Night Boat to Cairo' for more nutty dance moves.

    I googled it, hitting kids in school became illegal in 1986, I was 10, I only ever remember seeing 1 boy hit across the hands with a ruler, maybe it's because I went to a Catholic school, but chose not to attend the after school club thing, it was run by nuns and I heard so many stories of them hitting people, put me off ever going there, apart from that though, I only witnessed it once.
    I think Suggs invented this style of 'dancing', you don't see many people do it, unless a Madness song comes on, I've been known to bust out the jerky Suggs dance after a few beers 🤭
    Glad you liked them 😁💛
