  • In today’s video, we’re going to check out an extension that significantly upgrades Blender’s move functions with snapping, constraints, and much more!
    CAD TRANSFORM TOOL DOWNLOAD LINK
    gumroad.com/l/...
    Today’s tool is the CAD transform tool - a tool specifically designed to add CAD style transformation tools to blender.
    You can download this tool at the following link. You can download it for free, or throw a few dollars the developer’s way. I’d personally recommend supporting developers whenever possible.
    This tool will be especially welcome for people that are used to working with CAD software, as the regular Blender move tool is a bit more…arbitrary than they’re used to.
    This tool adds edge snapping, midpoint snapping, and much more to the Blender movement toolset, allowing you to be significantly more precise in the way you can move and adjust different things!

      This is brilliant. Normally you can use snap when placing objects, but this allows you to choose exactly what to snap and to what to snap it to. This brings is closer to cad-like editing. Great tool, great video. I missed those snapping options from autoCAD, it's great that they bring them to blender. There are two things that I still miss, the first one is that if you select with your pointer making a box from right to left everything that the box is touching or inside gets selected, but if you make the box from left to right only the elements that are completely inside the box get selected it ignores elements that are partially outside the box, and the second one is zooming, it has many zooming tools like making a box to zoom, or a separated button or tool just for the zooming, without undoing your work, I have not seen this in blender I wish someone did an add-on for this, it is very handy

    Heck yeah! Coming from a CAD background, it's often puzzled me how these tools are overlooked. Another thing (listen up, developers!) is the way blender handles mirroring objects. Many CAD (and some 3D-Lightwave) let you mirror objects by drawing a line. Blender does that, but because of the origin point in blender, makes it operate in a different, maddening fashion. Spent way too much time trying to do this yesterday; should've taken 10 seconds.

    • @mitri5389
      @mitri5389 4 года назад +1

      in blender mirroring is easy. you change the Cursor to what ever you want press shift ctrl alt and s together and select change origin to 3D cursor.
      if the object doesn't mirror how you want it to spawn in a plane and change the orientation of the plane in object mode let say 45 degree. shift click the old object and than the plane and press ctrl J. enter edit mode and delete the plane using L select

    Yes! I feel that people coding for Blender are helping me march one step at a time to a 100% blender workflow for architecture. And while it's 'free' I fully intend to fund these guys as much as I can because their time is valuable, and add-ons like this will save me a lot in the future. That is IF enough functionality comes to Blender, so let's all chip in and make the Blender BIM an option for designers.

  • @TheSockMonkeyGuy
    @TheSockMonkeyGuy 4 года назад +1

    I used SketchUp as a hobbyist since Google first introduced it; mostly to design objects for woodworking and, later, 3D printing. Then Google sold SketchUp to Trimble and Trimble ultimately put SketchUp behind a paywall (more accurately, the "free" version has been gutted so that it doesn't allow plugins, exporting different file formats or saving to your local drive). Since then I've been looking for a replacement. Previous versions of Blender had a really steep learning curve and didn't easily allow the kind of precision that this add-on does. The overall learning curve is still a bit steep but now I'm starting to consider slogging through it. Thanks, CG Essentials! Subscribed!

    • @TheCGEssentials
      @TheCGEssentials  4 года назад

      It's steep, but if you start with simple tutorials and focus on the things you want to do, it's definitely achievable

    • @mitri5389
      @mitri5389 4 года назад

      I would not use blender as a cad software. look at programs like freecad. blender is used mostly for art in video games, cgi and the likes. blender is not well suited for making thing in real life if you are looking for precision.

    • @TheSockMonkeyGuy
      @TheSockMonkeyGuy 4 года назад

      @@mitri5389 Thanks; I have been looking at FreeCAD at the same time. It has its own learning curve, the documentation is somewhat unclear, and at version 0.18 it is not anywhere close to a mature tool. To date I have created and printed simple objects (with some difficulty) using both programs. I realize that Blender is not designed for CAD. FreeCAD, in turn, is not designed to produce organic shapes, and it appears extremely cumbersome for most woodworking applications. So it looks like I will have to learn both.
      Sadly, I left the coding world about 1985. I would love to help advance the state of FreeCAD but I would not be useful to them.

    hi, for a cad user like I am having this in Blender finally is a game changer, thank you for this post. I think you overlooked a usage that is very common and very useful in other cad softwares: snapping entirely on other objects to modify my object, i.e. if I want to replicate a certain cube I can extrude my edge pinpoint the other cube first edge as base and the other cube second edge as end and my cube will have the very same dimension. This comes in handy also for making replicas not using the array modifier an other stuff. Great stuff anyway, I am getting this addon right away. Thank you

      Is that not what I did when I extruded the cylinder to match the height of the other object?

    • @FedericoAlbano83
      @FedericoAlbano83 4 года назад

      @@TheCGEssentials if you refer to minute 5:42 not exactly: in that case you chose as the base point (first click) the upper face of the cylinder you wanted to modify. What I refer to is that using base points does not necessarily require to use a base point of the object you want to modify itself, but you can select a base point on another object and an end point on another object in order to modify yours. You can for example make a segment which has length of 10 units. Then you create another object that you want to extrude by 10, so you press E and then the base point will be the first point of the segment (which is not part of your object) and the end point will be the end of the segment. I hope i clarified myself here. Cheers

    Brilliant! - game changer! Thank you:) Tried entering 3 on numeric keypad (Mac) for 3 inches but it scales it up instead of reducing down to 3 inches. Units set to imperial. Any ideas?

    Hi is there any setting to make the highlight more bright or use different color , in my UI when for example vertex mode, the almost hard to see if the vertex is selected. It works , it's just the highlight color is too soft in my UI. Any solution ?

    • @TheCGEssentials

      Thanks! I don't fully understand what you're trying to do - there are a lot of ways to scale a cylinder - are you just trying to make it bigger?

  • @musicpet

    What happens at 8:11? It looks like you skip something in the video because suddenly the edge of the cube is lined up with the wall. I try to align two randomly rotated objects like your cube and wall, but I don't succeed.

    • @TheCGEssentials
      @TheCGEssentials  4 года назад

      I rotated it twice - once to align on the blue axis, and a second time to align along the red axis

    • @musicpet
      @musicpet 4 года назад

      @@TheCGEssentials Yeah, thanks. It is a little hard to make the rotation alignment when both objects have been randomly rotated and sometimes the snapping gets wrong. I'll have to keep practicing!

    • @musicpet
      @musicpet 4 года назад

      I found it easier to first align the two cubes' normals. Then snap a vertex from cube B (the one you want to align) onto cube A (the one you want to align to). Then you will only have to press R and click on the aligned vertex on cube B and then click on another vertex on the same edge, press Z three times and then click on a vertex on cube A that gives you the rotation that you want. Again, this goes for two randomly rotated objects where you don't have any help by having one object already aligned to the global XYZ axes.

    Great video and awesome plugin. Would you know by chance if there is the possibility to combine snap modes? I mean to not only snap a vertex to another vertex but to snap a vertex for example to an edge center or face center? I tried to find a way to do this myself, but couldn´t find a way to do this.Thanks.

    • @TheCGEssentials

    Problems: I looked at your video 3x but I am getting two issues...
    1.) when I hit the "G" key to move box, it shuts down Blender.
    2.) It does not select any vertex or individual faces, just the whole object to move it on top of each other...I try it on 2.83 and 2.9 beta.
    btw I did SUBSCRIBED and like. What am I doing wrong and is it just me! Bad luck Luis here. HELP because I will never give up.

    • @StephenLeger
      @StephenLeger 4 года назад

      1) Crash when you hit G probably is an issue with outdated graphic card drivers / hardware.
      2) Go into edit mode to move individual vertex or face.
