This is because that's what nearly every other piece of software uses as it's standard navigation. And since you might want to get into advanced texturing with Substance, advanced rendering with Marmoset or advanced cloth creation with Marvelous Designer, breaking the muscle memory early on it much easier than trying to do it after months or years of getting used to it (first hand experience there). Top work!
you should not do this because it will make it 100 times harder to follow tutorial and allot of the setting in blender will be harder to find. just get convertible with blender because learning how to move in the viewport takes 20 second to leurn and 1 hour to get used too
I work in about 5 different software packages all with different navigation. You can adapt. At least blender lets you pick left click vs right click now! If you want to do it professionally and you hop between software then configure everything to your level of comfort. I work mainly in CAD and going to blender the pan vs rotate keys are switched but after a fumble or two the muscle memory kicks in. Amazing progress in 100hours!
I've never dared to venture past the first few hours of Blender, so this was cool to see the progression and how many hours it took someone else to learn different things. Your final product is incredible!

@@Marshimized I don't anything about these. Can you suggest me some source to learn these?. I like animated movies so much and I want to create some things like these in the video. Where do I start? Should I need good skills in drawing. Thanks:)
Blender has a missing material/file search function in menu File/External Data/Find Missing Files. Then just navigate where you think it was, even if it is an entire drive as it will iterate through the folders in your file structure. I also learned the hard way when I started to work with blender. This function is massive time saver.
You did pretty decent for a beginner. The reason you did well is you had a specific goal. You had seen someone put themselves in a scene so you actually had a scene in your head that you wanted to be in.
I downloaded blender just last night and started working on a "simple" 3d logo. I was having headaches almost immediately. Finding your video today has given me a lot of motivation to keep grinding. I have taken several runs at Blender, but apparently don't have the patience to learn it. I really don't have a need for it with the type of content I produce, so there was no overwhelming push to learn it. I do congratulate you on sticking with it and completing a project. I am sure you will do many more. Cheers.
I’m switching career fields from software engineering to 3D modeling because of the freedom to model anything desirable in any given field (video games, CA, architecture, etc) and always dreamed of creating models for video game devs to use. This project you did is very similar to where I want to be. I just started but the learning curve is huge in the course I’m using. However it’s still very interesting for me more then computer science. I’ll hope to get similar results in my first 100 hours
You are right, 3D modelling is much more fun and interesting than computer science, computer science is limited to abstraction while 3D modelling lets you create a simulation similar to our world. Computer science can also do that but 3D modelling gives you a visual simulation
This shows the power of Blender. Kind of similar to my journey recently. It's not easy... but still, if you are dedicated enough you'll be able to create some fantastic things within no time.
there's actually a button under "files > external data > FIND MISSING FILES" in case you're loosing some textures again. its way quicker than downloading and relinking everything 😅 or if the textures and so on are not too big, you can save it in the file direcly. then you dont have to worry anymore abourt file paths
Found this video encouraging and inspiring for those of us getting started with Blender/3D. Short term my goal is to focus on character design, modeling and animation, but after doing some basic tutorials and learning of environments, lighting and stuff I realize there's lots more to Blender than you realize. Plus I've got an additional motivation: after 25 years in web development, I'm eager to switch to something else to put food on the table and I think 3d is my ticket, as demand will likely increase over time. Thanks for sharing 😀
Impressive mate. Goes to show that anyone (who has an eye for design) can achieve huge leaps on their goals with just persistence. I feel like so many people give up as soon as they just feel slightly overwhelmed, not knowing that it's the standard feeling you get before you start ticking boxes. Well done.
Thanks Adam - I've not tried Blender but much of your "learning curve" was familiar having learnt Sketchup in the last year and now tackling Unity. Thanks for sharing - you should definitely keep going - 3d modelling is a valuable skill for which the demand will continue to increase.

Bruh. Awesome progress for your first project! You challenged yourself and stuck with it. The reason most people fail is because they burn out before they see the results they expected from day one. and choose to give up instead of persevering It doesn't work like that. Good Job!!!!!!!
All I can say is well done man, never seen your channel before but the dedication to go from nothing to something in blender is astonishing. Opened up blender and after effects and just closed it because it seemed impossible, but man, well done 😁😁
A tip for animations, if you use the Denoise Node in the Compositor, you can get away with using fewer samples per frame, hence speeding render speeds. Although, gotta have enough, so it looks visually consistent.
@@AdamBaird since the end result isn't quite photorealistic why didn't you render with Eevee instead of cycles? It would have finished rendering in hours if not minutes.
This is really awesome but also really discouraging because I have a little over 300 hours in blender and I thought I was getting really good but your scene is so much better and high quality and you did it in a couple weeks
don't be discouraged man. he had very clear idea - that moved in the right direction very quick. the way you thinking about it right now is not good for you, you have to adjust that if you want to improve your life. watch futur channel, he has alot of good thinking patterns going on there, which you can pick-up on
If you installed through steam it tracks your blender hours for you. Also they're right about not getting discouraged. Blender is such a versatile program that you can spend thousands of hours using it, and still have no idea what most of the UI does. I've put in over 4000 hours and I could tell you all about creating functional character assets for video games, but I would be incredibly lost if I had to make a scene like this. Especially that rendering, it took TWO DAYS?! I don't know what I'd do with my life if I had to let my PC just chill and render for that long. I'd probably start googling render farms so I'd never have to do it again, lol.
@@AdamBaird But this is precisely how you learn when it comes to technical areas, for example, if you wanted to learn to utilize Photoshop, you would require a project first. You have talent man, you really should get into it deeply, it could change your life forever.
I have maybe 3 or 4 hours on it at most. I’ve had it for like 8 or 9 months but the most I’ve done is use it for a school project and do some very small stuff and I haven’t forced myself to sit down and actually learn it until last night and now this video popped up and to see your progress in just 100 hours is definitely inspiring

Maybe it's not laziness, maybe you just need to set yourself an ambitious goal. Try to find the edge between nice to have and too ambitious so you'll give up preemptively. That is the big takeaway in this successtory I think.
Great video, and final render looks epic! A shame the chess overlay covers the most detailed part. As someone new to 3D (~15 hours in), I'm wondering if you learned better by making your own scene and searching for solutions when encountering issues, or watched/read tutorials first and attempted to implement it into your scene after?

you should not do this because it will make it 100 times harder to follow tutorial and allot of the setting in blender will be harder to find. just get convertible with blender because learning how to move in the viewport takes 20 second to leurn and 1 hour to get used too
That is a good point... thanks
Thanks, this will help me.
I've never dared to venture past the first few hours of Blender, so this was cool to see the progression and how many hours it took someone else to learn different things. Your final product is incredible!

if you haven't started learning yet, i suggest trying to make something from complete scratch with the knowledge you have right now, then make the donut and whatever project you can follow along with after. i made a shotgun shell as my first render and felt so accomplished, then went back to look at it a couple months later. huge motivation boost right there. it's really nice to have an obvious starting point that you can go back to later to see all the progress you've made
Nice to see someone getting into Blender; I'd recommend Royal Skies for basic tutorials and Ian Hubert for more advanced ones!

Blender has a missing material/file search function in menu File/External Data/Find Missing Files. Then just navigate where you think it was, even if it is an entire drive as it will iterate through the folders in your file structure.
I also learned the hard way when I started to work with blender. This function is massive time saver.
Thanks!
You did pretty decent for a beginner.
The reason you did well is you had a specific goal.
You had seen someone put themselves in a scene
so you actually had a scene in your head that you wanted to be in.
Yep! Thanks for the nice comment!
I downloaded blender just last night and started working on a "simple" 3d logo. I was having headaches almost immediately. Finding your video today has given me a lot of motivation to keep grinding. I'll set a timer every time I work and see what I can accomplish after a hundred hours. Thank you for sharing, king!

I've always wanted to try Blender in a while but afraid it'd be tough and never gave it a go. This gave me motivation, I'll start with the basics.
Yeah! Glad to hear it. Start basic and pick a project that you are excited about!
@@AdamBaird Hi Adam , can you show me where I learn Blender basic ? Thank you so much.
@@quoctam1719 Start with the donut... Blender guru is the youtube channel you're looking for.
Yeah, I thought it'd be very hard to do, but it's actually super simple, especially with AutoCAD and Microstation experience. I'm learning it alongisde UE5 rn, and the initial intimidation has mostly withered away.

I wish you the best of luck! It Definitely takes a creative eye. Stick around!
You are right, 3D modelling is much more fun and interesting than computer science, computer science is limited to abstraction while 3D modelling lets you create a simulation similar to our world. Computer science can also do that but 3D modelling gives you a visual simulation
That is Awesome !! Can you please share your 3D modeling learning track ?
Dude anything that will help you secure your future and make you profits is worth learning, provided that you love it and enjoy doing it.
Well said! Thanks for commenting!

This shows the power of Blender. Kind of similar to my journey recently. It's not easy... but still, if you are dedicated enough you'll be able to create some fantastic things within no time.
Yep, blender is really cool. I am glad that there were so many resources that could teach me along the way.
How do you bother with long render time tho? I wanna get my hands on blender but afraid it would destroy my poor low-spec PC.
Use Google colab
@@id6441 what's that :o
Edit: Ohh, thank you! Didn't even know such a thing exists.
there's actually a button under "files > external data > FIND MISSING FILES" in case you're loosing some textures again. its way quicker than downloading and relinking everything 😅 or if the textures and so on are not too big, you can save it in the file direcly. then you dont have to worry anymore abourt file paths
Yeah... that didn't work for me... I must have deleted something along the way,.
I'd be happy just to make a decent doughnut. Great job Adam!
Cool! I am a web developer by day. RUclipsr by night. Keep following the dream!
Impressive mate. Goes to show that anyone (who has an eye for design) can achieve huge leaps on their goals with just persistence.

A tip for animations, if you use the Denoise Node in the Compositor, you can get away with using fewer samples per frame, hence speeding render speeds. Although, gotta have enough, so it looks visually consistent.
Yeah with all the dark spots the denoiser wasn't working well so I turned it off.
@@AdamBaird Ah, understandable.

I was super focused on achieving this one objective... I am not very versed in all over blender and will have to learn many parts over again.
don't be discouraged man. he had very clear idea - that moved in the right direction very quick. the way you thinking about it right now is not good for you, you have to adjust that if you want to improve your life. watch futur channel, he has alot of good thinking patterns going on there, which you can pick-up on
are people just casually recording the amount of time they've spent in blender lol
Well thats great! Don't give up!
He did a scene that was a million times more complex than what I could do after 4 years of Blender!!!

I've learnt that some people have two superpowers called patience and attention to detail that allow this to happen.
I never manage to stick to the same project for more than a few hours max.

You learned blender in 100 hours that is awesome I started learning it almost a year ago and still am lagging behind it is mainly because of my laziness but you made me want to improve my skills thanks for that :)
So cool! I am glad that you liked the video. Blender is pretty complicated. When 3.0 comes out there will be a lot of cool new features!
Thanks! Yeah the chessboard covers most of the detail, But the board isn't always up. I work best by doing and fixing along the way. That means a lot of redoing though which can be frustrating. I am glad that you liked the video!
You could install a monitor in your blender scene and live comp the chess overlay into it 😁 very nice scene!
