I love the “old game” references - if I hear a game I don’t know, I look it up and educate myself! This podcast is a good “gateway” to stuff I’d never hear of otherwise.
Some great topics for Talk About Games would be Zelda and Sydney Hunter, Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter, F-Zero and Out Run, Favorite Arcade Games, Advances in gaming, Favorite 16 bit games, Favorite 3D games, History of Mario games.
I never understood being confused by strengths and weaknesses. It’s common sense for most. What is fire weak to, what do you think? Water what’s that weak to? If you think about it electric makes sense. And now they take the memory aspect out of it where it tells you super effective when you select your move. How’s that different from any other rpg with magic spells or abilities? You never hear that complaint with other rpg’s.
MIKE this is just one man's opinion, but I REALLY think you should bring back the lever. I loved it. It didn't even happen but like twice per stream, I don't think it was run into the ground at all. I loved it, and I miss it. Please, everyone, give a thumb up and a comment if you agree. #BringBackTheLever

GUYS! Please talk about AM2R - I am sure any Metroid fan would agree that it is a rare occasion where a fan-made game is far superior to any of the official games in the series - utterly unique gem of gaming.
I appreciate the offhand comparisons to lesser-known retro games, as I’ll go look them up after the podcast ends. It’s like homework, but good homework.
There's a moment when Mike Matei talks about how complicated is to remember the advantage/disadventage charts for pokemon. I mean. I was 8 when I learned it, it's very intuitive, you learn it almost by accident, without paying too much attention. If when you fight a poison pokemon you notice that your attacks are not very effective... you don't need too much effort to remember that. I don't know, that point felt kinda ridiculous. If 6 years old can learn it, it's not that complicated.
To be fair it makes sense in a general way too. Fire melts steel. Birds eat bugs. Of course these things will be weak to those things. I think I was 8 when I played red and blue back in the day, and it just came natural to me.
Here's the thing about mentioning games the audience doesn't know: they're on the internet while they're watching you, and looking those games up can be done very quickly and easily. You can get at least a description if not gameplay footage or screenshots, and I'd say it's the audience's responsibility to do so, if they need the context. Usually the point is made clear without that context being needed to understand it, though. I wouldn't worry about it, I consider the longer perspective you guys have one of your best points.
How else can you ever get a reference if you never teach yourself the references? One of the best things about Kindles is that I can just click on any word in a book I'm reading if I don't know its meaning and get told its definition.
Its funny you say "have you even heard of these old games" im not sure of the age range of your audience but i am 37. I grew up with the NES, atari, TG16, genesis, etc. Like, yes ive heard of them and thanks a ton for making me feel ancient 😂
Mike, it was essentially you and Mark from Classic Game Room that got me into the really retro stuff. I actually own a copy of Turmoil, but only because YOU have inadvertently influenced my game purchases over the years
When Huntdown came out, Amazon had a really cool version for cheap, $30 on PS4 and it came with some pins and a cool outer cardboard box. Idk if it's still available, probably is. Because I know most of you weren't able to get the awesome LRG version with the action figure, I didn't either, the 1000 copies sold out in under a minute.
Levels weren't designed for mele weapons, I felt like it was a cool extra. They s should have had sections where the mele weapons would have been utilized better. Needed more level variety tho
It feels like TemTem tried to tackle the longtime grievances around "things GameFreak does wrong", while in the process missing out on everything GameFreak actually does right (charming roster of mons, interesting lore, interactions with your critters, etc.).
Temtem looks like a worthwhile clone. I like how it does some stuff that Pokémon should be doing. It’s a shame that Game Freak barely has to make an effort with their games these days, although Pokémon Legends: Arceus could be a step in the right direction. I also love using melee weapons in games. Zero is much more fun to play as than X in Mega Man X4 and beyond because of his Z-Saber. I also like using the knife a lot in Resident Evil 4.
Personally, I'm not interested in the specific games you cover. But, I really enjoy when you branch off into more general topics, (indie developers vs. Nintendo, the future of gaming, Nintendo vs. Disney, "modern retro" games, etc.). I think that's where the real substantial discussion happens.
I feel so much better that I'm not the only one who can't go back to a game after a long period of time and just continue playing it from where I left off! I must have put a hundred hours into Breath of the Wild when it first came out and I just had to start from the beginning cuz I couldn't remember how to play it and I want to beat it before the new one comes out 😂
I used to like Pokémon as a kid. I like the rpg style of Pokémon but it never really innovated on its core mechanics. Recently I played Shin Megami Tensei. It’s similar where you collect demons, rpg mechanics are deeper, and it’s adult themed. I had no idea this franchise existed. SMT3 and 5 are incredible, never going back to Pokémon.
If Socrates and Plato talked about video games instead of philosophy, then this would be their show. Video games are a new art form and its clear that you both have a deep passion and understanding of the medium. You both have a lot of different preferences, but you respect each others views and learn about cool games you wouldn't normally play, otherwise, as a result. This is how gamers should treat each other instead of getting in the most foolish of pissing contests that has come to sadly define the majority of our community. I have Temtem downloading on Steam right now and I wanna get my friends who also grew up with Pokemon hooked on it too. Thanks for the great dialogues Ryan and Mike!
I remember playing Pokemon type games back on the PS1 even, the genre is not something Pokemon has a monopoly on. Why are people wanting Temtem to be shut down?
There is a good point about games with constant updates that you can't play old versions, so basically games that you loved are not exist anymore. This is super sad.
over 10.000 attempts and calebheart finally got a shiny Ray in brilliant diamond or shiny pearl. That is literally more than 2x the rates the say. its suppose to be like 1/4000+ pokemon just sucks and the people in the company more so for how they dont care about the time people put into the franchise... the amount of time people spend makes them want to validate their time as if it was not a fucking waste... but just like me running doom speedruns.. it a fucking waste. the only difference is i went out of my way to do things in doom, in pokemon, they treat your time like it is not worth a single thing. time is money, any spent in a game should not be wasted by the devs cause we could be doing something far more productive. I honestly cant stand most of the devs today.. cause they treat us like we owe them time, not like our time is a worth anything. then they constantly beg for money in their stores cause their time is worth so much but ours is not? Sorry but devs can also be a p.o.s to people. not just the publishers
Most giant corporations behind video game production care about one thing and one thing only: making insane amounts of money. Some are more consumer-friendly than others, but still. They just want to line their pockets as much as they possibly can, which is why AAA games especially, for all their technical and (sometimes) creative marvels, will always be horribly compromised as games/art pieces. There is far too much investment involved, and players are just looked at as money dispensers. It's very similar to mainstream movies, which is why the majority of them are soulless cash grabs that try to pretend to be important, but actually are mediocre at best or pure garbage at worst. But at least with the movies, when you go to the theaters or watch them on streaming services, they are basically always actually finished and fully functional... Same can't be said for stuff like Battlefield, Call of Duty or Cyberpunk 2077, which is totally egregious and filthily disgusting. Never pre-order. Never buy day one. Never pay out for microtransactions. Ever.
I'm 8 seconds into seeing what TemTem looks like and I'm already bored of it. Luckily Huntdown looks absolutely epic and straight out of a 90's action movie blockbuster.

And how would you heal the pokemon instead ? That was always cool and like in the show.
