I've seen them 4 times, twice with Walter and twice without. Honestly, I enjoyed them more without Walter's constant noodling, and Jon Harrington is so good, I got to hear more of him.
It guess it took around 8 months, from December 1976 to July 1977, for the creation of Aja. An accomplishment that kinda stands out given the rapid pace of recording, for many classic albums, often completed in one or two days, a week, or on average a month. Fagen and Becker's commitment to crafting a masterpiece is evident in the meticulous testing and selection of every element, including production methods, equipment, and especially the players. They actively sought the right musicians for each song, spending hours testing and selecting until they found the perfect fit. Aja involved nearly 40 musicians in its recording, an extensive process described as "excessive" by many. Despite the extended timeline, I guess the final result paid off the hours and hours of work.
I was there! I still think Steely Dan is the greatest band ever. RIP Walter Becker. You guys got me through college, bad jobs, worse relationships and some pretty awesome times. 😁❤️
@@missingremote4388 I just traded the Mustang in for a Charger Scat Pack. The Hemi V-8's are going away after next year due to the EPA and Brandon. Let's Go Brandon!
don't ever think this is not a donald fagan production , he's got the controls to everything going on here and thank god for it , this is fucking live and hes like older than me and im almost 60 , so peace to you d. fagan you sure contributed greatly to my life soundtrack and i love you for it ok , t.davis
the deadhead in me is gonna have to disagree... (and i got my name changed to Kid Charlemagne) Steely Dan will always be amazing in every since of the word though.
In the musical side pop culture between 1970 and 1980; when there were crossovers from almost every genre’….Steely Dan made one of the biggest and best defined statements for their “niche”. In that decade radio spewed out country rock, bubble gum, hard rock, progressive, TV show themes, folk, “ socially conscious” tunes…..semi-classical/orchestral tracks; all flavors. Steely Dan didn’t change the world or even change the game. But for 99% of the music of their active period - the “shelf life”…… the timelessness of their music stands up better now than all the Top Ten of that era. A sincere, non-delitante love of jazz and a perfectionist approach to recording quality combined to make their works totally listenable even today….45 years after “Aja”….
I've been testing mine for the last couple of months with SD. Couple of seventies big box 10" upgraded a few years ago. Stacked next to my desk, a couple of little C clamps holding the top one on.....LOL......Rock on!
Damn!!!! This is one of my favorite songs! Rarely have I heard a "live" version of any song that is so close to the studio version, but they did this!!!!! Man I like this!!!
Cornelius Bumpus -- the man playing that sweet sax solo -- died just 6 months after this performance. He had a heart attack on a flight from New York to Los Angeles, where he was scheduled to perform. The plane made an emergency landing in Iowa, with an ambulance waiting for it on the runway, but Bumpus died a few minutes after landing. Just 58 years old. Gone far too soon but forever memorialized in his music. RIP.
Saw him pretty close up with Larry Carlton a month ago and he was amazing. I didn’t even know that he was Steely Dan’s actual drummer until halfway through the show
Thank you so much for your gaucho album always on the turntable got it back in 1980 favorite song hey 19 any so very lucky to have your music in my life ❤❤❤❤
This brings back so many vivid memories of my mid-teens. We were driving around in my buddy's F150 4x4, blasting this album like 4-5 times through in one night. Good times and fabulous music. Shame Walter couldn't still be around. People will be DanHeads 100 yrs from now
The comments on here tell me that this clip has just recently been (re) posted to youtube. I had the address for a slightly longer version of this exact performance (on the old one there is a few more seconds of Donald Fagen talking, after the song ends, he says "one album after this we did an album called Gaucho"). I was very disappointed when the old clip disappeared YEARS AGO. -- I LOVE this sax solo by Cornelius Bumpus. I think he is the greatest sax player ever and I think this is his best solo. So glad to have this clip back again to listen to Cornelius whenever I really need a lift. And of course, RIP Cornelius Bumpus. We all miss you!! R.I.P. Walter Becker, Ricky Lawson too!
A raree occasion where the live performance is actually slower than the original. It''s almost always the other way around for just about every band in the world.
Jim Pugh on trombone - the only one to ever convince Donald Fagan he should have a trombone in his band :-) Cornelius Bumpus - who could match that easy laid back sound????
Sorry, but I don't think the date of show as stated is correct. Pine Knob is a shed, last shows of the season are typically late September/early October...no shows ever in November that I'm aware of. Maybe 8/11, not 11/8? Great track regardless though, lol!
Love me Steely Dan...music is so captivating.
Not catching Walter Becker while he was still on this planet with us was a mistake I’ll never recover from…. Love you Walter!

Solid tune. aja is a masterpiece. one of the most underrated and over looked albums ever
It took Becker and Fagen a year to finish "Aja" What a masterpiece
Thats all ?

My brother ran sound for a local band in Lansing Michigan in the 80s and 90s...he used the Aja album for that very purpose!!
Aja?
Best 'sound check CD' ?

Best band EVER.
well done!
Backing vocals totally in sync!
Absolutely.
They had to be. Walter & Donald didn't screw around. If I was in the Steely Dan touring band I would be terrified of making a mistake.
It"s such an honor to live in a world with Donald Fagen.
RIP Walter and Cornelius. Making beautiful music in heaven!
Miss them. Legendary. Perfect.
I'm glad to have been in a world and a time when this music was made
Well said, same here now that you mention it. My Aja-era teen life was magical.

The whole show is like that. They are unbelievable to see live. Gonna be hard to replace Becker in the next tour.

WOW..thanks for the informational nugget. Dude was a musical Genius ❤
It is quite a masterful bit of improv. Everything super logical and "just right", nothing detracts or moves us of the main groove of this great tune.

NICE!
Wow, Cornelius's sound. What a great tenor sax player!
Cornelius has the best tenor sax sound out there.
