I was a 5 year old kid when I first heard Steely Dan and that song was “Peg” on the radio. It was the summertime of 1978. On a warm windy hot summer afternoon, outside the Almaden apartments in San Jose, California, the neighborhood kids and myself were getting hosed down by my mom and her friend Donna. The radio was blasting and I literally froze to listen to “Peg” and 45 years later I’m still listening to Steely Dan. This album was/is the favorite of my mother’s and I. Mom passed away in 2020. The Second Arrangement was our favorite non album song. See, I actually lived that song to a damn tee. Haha! Great upload. This album will remain timeless.
Absolutely my favorite SD album. Until I hear another. These guys are infallible musicians and lyricists. "Gaucho" and "Glamour Profession" are simply masterpieces.
It’s Steely Dan! Gifted musicians and session players as well as backup singers. There timing thing is part of their appeal. It is part of what draws you into their brand. Enjoyable and timeless.
Actually Gaucho is rated as a medium good SD album. But for me its only surpassed by Aja. They also had some good creativity on earlier albums, but it did not sound like this ear candy.
@@la7dfa --I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer the last two Dan releases more than all the others. And I also think Pretzel Logic and Katy Lied are dogs in comparisons to all the other Dan albums. But then again, Revolver is also my least favourite Beatles album too. I have also played keyboards, guitar, and bass professionally for going on to 50 years too. That seems to make a difference--I really don't know how though. Maybe because I'm listening for different things like, production, mixing, composition, performance and chord progressions unlike the everyday listener.
Nonsense. Aja is much better. I have had both albums since way way way back to 1995. Auaand countdown to ecstasy and even pretzel logic are better. The scam album is on par with gaucho.
They are just as amazing live ! I am grateful to see the Steely Dan 2007 got a front row in the Towers PA. Young Lesley Miller and Valerie Simpson so sexy back vocals. ❤❤❤ Rip 💔 Mr W Becker.
My kind of music ! Grew up in my late teens and early twenties adoring these artists for making my existence feel magical with their classical musical contributions. Love you forever ! 😍
@@la7dfa My strong bond began at age 2 with Rachmaninoff. Hasn't let up 70 years later, only the amount of music I enjoy has grown to include things like this wonderful Steely Dan record.
apart from having the musical chops already, the vision to making a sound you just want to enjoy again and again is within this excellent album .and it could be pissing down with rain outside but what comes out of your speakers is just sunshine. everything you need and no preseritives or added fat, all natural ingredients for a feast of great listening.
This album was originally mastered by Robert (Bob) Ludwig, one of the best mastering engineers of all time. His initials, RL, will be carved in the runout groove if he mastered it.
Nice table. Love my 6300 (Marantz). Funny I go in and out with this particular album in their catalog still. Dunno why. I still seem to like all the predecessor albums a bit more. Might be the very polished vibe they went for on this one that I can't quite go for as easily. Still killer arrangements and production. Most argue it was their pinnacle. From an engineering prospective, that's probably a fair assessment.
I knew Steely Dan, but I’m now exploring their whole catalogue. With a fresh mind, I can say that gaucho is their best album in all facets ( Aja is also a gem) . But yeah music is about taste, so what I say is meaningless I know, but I still wanted to let you know ;)
Love them both, I think where Steely Dan might have gone a little wrong is their use of the drum machine/Wendel on the Gaucho LP, for example the track Glamour Profession sounds very stiff to me, in terms of percussion - makes it a bit more clinical sounding than the beautiful (non-machine) drum tracks like Babylon Sisters. Still love Gaucho to death tho.
There's so much from the first album and the progression all the to gaucho it's impossible to name the best album. Or song for that matter. I've been listening to steely dan for fifty years or more. It all depends on what I was doing, who I was with at the time. Truly the best band in my opinion.
I specifically sought out the 'export' version of the original American pressing. I love the SACD version streaming on Tidal, but the vinyl has something extra to me. The bass is just meatier.
This is so quintessential 2 the soul body & mind a journey on a sweet & smooth magic carpet ride thru a beautiful sky on that thing we call a swing right there in dat' jazzy & groovy POCKET!!! And the song "Peg" was released in 1977 from the album "Aja" & it was on side B track #1 & on the "Gaucho" album what is playing now is the 4th track on side B or the very first song. Bada Bing - Bada Boom!!!🥁
Ive heard Babylon sisters many many times. But never on vinyl,so many different tones and things id never heard before, especially at 5:40 on the outro,it sounds like the bass player fluffs a note. Probably not and by no means am I criticizing this song. It's one of my all time favourites. Just funny what you hear sometimes. Thanks for posting this ❤.
Great album, can't decide if I prefer this or Aja. Do yourself a favour., buy the Disco Antistat record cleaner. It will transform your records, make your records sound like new. The only issue is the bottle of cleaning fluid supplied leaves a fine film but I would suggest that you make your own cleaning fluid. 80% distilled water, 20% isopropyl alcohol, a drop of washing up liquid and a drop of dishwasher rinse aid. This has worked for me for the last few years.
As he plays the gungle music. Mind you, this is what our parents used to call rock. They'd yell at us, "turn that jungle music down!" So this is Don Fagen's version of turning it up. Thank you Don. From all of us.
Isnt it amazing how people meet each other and create bands like this? Tell it was chance and ill tell you theres no such thing. Everything that happens is because it was meant to happen. Chance is a cheesy name for a baby and the parents didnt even know that "mistake" they made in the back of Buckys 67 Pontiac Tempest was actually gonna happen whether Bucky pulled out or not! Ha! Hows that for fate!
I must do this for Aja. How did you get it into you Tube? I'm a bit behind on the Music stuff exports. I can Rip to USB from CD, but from Vinyl no idea. Many thanks
Vinyl goes into your amplifier. Tape out goes to audacity on your computer. Record in stereo. Export as wave or mp3. Use a video program (Shotcut e.g.) to add picture or video. (record the video on your phone while you play the vinyl) Export as mp4. Put on youtube... Easy. I've done it a few 1000 times...
Please no crackles, Hi Fi looks good, but what is the past life of the Vinyl . I'll have to dig mine out to see what its like. But hey, this is really good of you, making such a great effort.
A shame you did that. Most audiophiles prefer vinyl because of the warmer sound and vinyl sales because of this are now selling more than downloads and CD's combined
It's OK, if you think you know more than the unwashed - about music and life. That makes it suspect. To their credit, the writing duo took out the long handle on their own fans. "They got the Steely Dan t-shirts".
Whenever I want to hear the Dan on RUclips, I always come here first! Thanks for posting! Sweet Turntable!
